In June, Chad Ellingson, Genex Beef Sire Procurement Manager, traveled with Jeff Wardof Sinclair Cattle Company, Inc. to review a herd of native Scottish Angus cattle. Jeff first made this tripin 1996 when he discovered the Dunlouise herd owned by Geordie and Julia Soutar. Since then Jeff hasworked closely with the Soutars to continue advancing this native Scottish gene pool to be some of the mostproductive cattle in the world. At Genex, we know first hand that correct genetics can be one of the most beneficial methods to producingbeef more efficiently. After studying the full production efficiencies these native Scottish Angus cattle offerfrom birth to harvest Genex felt it was ideal timing to offer this unique gene pool to the world. We feel thesegenetics can be a significant tool in producing cattle that will increase profits. They will do this by shorteninggestation lengths and producing excellent calf vigor; growing efficiently on inexpensive forage inputs andrequiring fewer days on concentrates while turning out a superior carcass; and most importantly producingfemales that will wean a higher percentage of her body weight with fewer inputs for multiple years.Genex has partnered with a group of cattlemen who share our vision of how these genetics fit into theAmerican production chain. We know, that as our customer, you rely on us to seek out and find alternativegenetics to utilize and help increase profits. We are excited as American cattle breeding enters a new chapter!32 ANGUS

Have We Made Any ProgressSensible answers to some tough questions about your cow herdBy Randy C. Perry, Ph.D., California State University, FresnoThe title of this article and the question that I pose to you, is havewe made any progress in the area of beef cattle genetics overthe last 10 to 15 years? Over the past few months, I have asked anumber of purebred producers a similar question – Are your cowsbetter today than what they were one decade ago? Some people have responded that, yes, their cows are higherperforming and better numbered in terms of expected progenydifferences (EPDs) than what they were a decade ago. In responseto those answers I have restated the question – Do you have bettercows today than what you had 10 years ago? Not with better EPDsor higher growth, but better cows. What is a better beef cow? There are a lot of different descriptionsand definitions for a better beef cow, because all of us thatbreed and raise beef cattle will have different opinions of thecharacteristics that define a better beef cow.John Crouch, retired chief executive officer of the American AngusAssociation, St. Joseph, Mo., was the keynote speaker during theCalifornia Beef Cattle Improvement Association 50th anniversarycelebration at the University of California, Davis. He addressed thistopic along with many others. The main point of Crouch’s presentation was that there is no suchthing as an ideal-sized cow. A good cow can be of many differentsizes and shapes. However, the traits that she should possess arethat she must reach puberty and breed on time as a heifer; sheshould calve unassisted; raise a good calf; and breed back in atimely matter. A quality cow should be able to do all these thingswith a limited amount of supplemental feeding, and should beproblem-free in terms of eyes, udder and feet. In addition, sheshould have a good disposition and be easy to handle.Because of my involvement with livestock judging and the showring, I like a cow to be pleasing to the eye from a phenotypicstandpoint, in addition to the characteristics that are describedabove. Most of the traits that were described by Crouch arewhat many people refer to as convenience traits. As we havebecome more advanced and technical in animal breeding, mostof our selection decisions have been based on EPDs and, now,DNA information and not on these more traditional or basicconvenience traits. The emphasis in most breeding programs, especially in the Angusbreed, during the last 10 years has been the improvement ofcarcass traits, especially marbling or intramuscular fat. This seemsjustified as the Beef Industry Audit conducted during the 1990s hadidentified the lack of marbling as a major factor hurting consumerdemand of beef.As the Angus breed developed $Value indexes, which combineproduction EPDs and economic weighting factors, Beef Dollar Value($B) has also received a lot of selection pressure over the last five years. So, I would ask the question again. If you consider theseconvenience traits, are your cows better today than what they were10 to 15 years ago? In my opinion, many of the genetics that wehave used over the last decade have not produced females that dothese basic things any better. In fact, I think we have lost ground on many of these very basic traitsor characteristics. We have produced many cattle that have problemsin the areas of udder quality, disposition and fleshing ability. Many people want to blame EPDs for the problems that have beencreated. EPDs have not been the problem, it is how they havebeen used. There is no doubt that EPDs are the most accurate andvaluable selection tools that we have in characterizing genetic valuein the areas in which they are available. However, we cannot forgetabout the value of some of these “convenience traits” in whichEPDs are not available. How valuable is carcass merit if a female cannot lie down and havea calf on her own? How valuable is $B in a female if her udder isnot good enough and she has to be milked before her calf cannurse for the first time? How many times have we seen the picture of a donor female that isso poor, in terms of udder quality, that she would be culled from acommercial herd. Many of the females have been breeding leadingEPDs in the areas of economically important traits. However, shouldsuch a cow be propagated and contribute to the next generation? How important is longevity in terms of influencing profit in acommercial cow-calf operation? I think it is extremely important. However, in many purebred herds, we are trying to turn overgenetics at a quicker rate; thus longevity receives no selectionpressure. I realize that the rate of genetic progress will slow downif we are going to put selection pressure on many of the traits thathave been mentioned here.Dave Daley, Ph.D., California State University, Chico, made thefollowing statement a number of years ago in a presentation, “Thebeef industry has the tools today to move backwards at a faster ratethan ever before.”Mother Nature is very ruthless in the way that she selects and cullsanimals in any kind of production situation. Where problems ariseis when we intervene in that process. We do that by doing thingssuch as trimming feet on a poorly-footed cow or milking out a cowwith a bad udder. Before artificial insemination (A.I.) and embryo transfer, if a bull wasnot sound enough to settle cows in a natural breeding situation, hesimply was not used and therefore he had no influence on the nextgeneration. Now that same bull can produce 1,000 calves a yearthrough the use of A.I.Don’t interpret these statements to mean that none of the geneticstoday have been of any value – that is not the case. There are manyoutstanding A.I. sires available. However, the point that I wantedto make is that many “convenience traits” are still very important,in terms of their influence on profitability in a commercial cow-calfoperation. In many purebred herds, these traits are receiving noemphasis or selection pressure. It is important that the genetics that we use today not only improvetraits in which EPDs are available, but also improve these more basicor traditional traits that can have significant impact on the ability of abeef cow to generate profit in a commercial cow-calf operation. n

Making Cows Out of HeifersDr. Patsy Houghton, Owner/General Manager, Heartland Cattle Company, McCook, NebraskaDevelop Your Heifers for the FutureThe replacement heifer is a mixed blessing for most cow-calfoperators. On one hand, she represents future profitability andgenetic improvement of the cow herd; thus her selection anddevelopment are of paramount importance to the continuedsuccess of any cow herd.On the other hand, the replacement heifer is an inconvenience atbest. Her smaller size and higher nutritional requirements dictateshe be raised and managed separately from the rest of the herd; yetthe fact that she is essentially non-productive for the first two yearsof her life makes her easy prey for mismanagement. Nevertheless, proper growth and development of the replacement female frombirth until she produces her first calf is of critical importance for herto become a highly productive part of the cow herd. Why Is Proper Heifer Management Profitable?1. Reduced breeding costs. Stringent culling eliminates poorreplacement prospects prior to investing time, labor and expenseinto breeding these heifers. Over the years, pre-breedingsoundness exams at Heartland Cattle Company have resultedin an average 3 to 9% culling rate prior to breeding. Reasonsfor culling have included small pelvic area, infantile reproductivetracts and/or various functional soundness problems. When thesepoor replacement prospects are identified prior to breeding, itallows the rancher to merchandise them in a timelier manner, thus improving cash flow and reducing total carrying costs.2. Increased conception rates. Only early born, efficient gainingheifers should be kept as replacement prospects. In addition,pre-breeding soundness exams can help identify those heifersthat are the most likely to conceive. These advantages, combinedwith proper nutritional development, result in higher first serviceconception rates and pregnancy rates. Historical data fromKansas State University and Heartland Cattle Company indicateproper heifer selection and development increases pregnancyrate by an average of 8% across herds and location.3. Heavier calves at weaning. Estrous synchronization results inan earlier average conception date within a defined breedingseason. This translates into older, heavier and more uniformcalves at weaning. In addition, the use of high accuracyexpected progeny difference (EPD) sirescan result in calves with superior geneticsfor gain efficiency. Please keep in mindthat calves with superior growth genetics are not necessarilyexcessively large framed cattle. The key is to identify moderateframed cattle with superior growth traits that still have the abilityto reach puberty at an early age.4. More uniform calf crop. The use of high accuracy EPDservice sires result in a calf crop with more uniform genetics forgrowth, frame, muscle, etc. This leads to increased quality andpredictability of steer and heifer progeny, and makes retainedownership and grid marketing at harvest viable options.5. Decreased bull costs. With the incorporation of an artificialinsemination (A.I.) program, fewer bulls will be purchasedand maintained by cow-calf producers. Supporting data fromColorado State University indicate the use of A.I. can result insavings when compared to natural service breeding programs.6. Less calving difficulty. A.I. sires with high accuracy EPDsfor calving ease result in less calving difficulty, calf loss, heifers which breed back earlier and increased productivityof replacement heifers. Data collected from Kansas StateUniversity and Heartland Cattle Company indicate an averageimprovement in weaned calf crop by 7% and an averageimprovement in rebreeding for the second calf by 8% whenheifers are placed in a developmental program with propernutrition, along with estrous synchronization and A.I.7. Decreased labor at calving. Heifers that undergo estroussynchronization will calve in a shorter period of time. Thisdecreases labor requirement at calving and increases theamount of time that could be devoted to other enterprises.More importantly, a concentrated calving season simplifiessubsequent nutrition and health programs for the rancher. How Can I Achieve These Goals?By following proper heifer development procedures, producershave a better chance of incorporating a female into their herdthat will be productive for years to come. Research conducted atHeartland Cattle Company shows a successful program revolvesaround the following points.1. Heifers should mature at 1100-1300 lbs, depending on availablefeed resources. The key is to match weight with appropriate frame.Be careful when selecting for lighter weight cattle going intohostile feed resource areas that you are not inadvertently selectingfor hard-keeping, inefficient cattle. For example, a heifer that willmature at 1100-1150 lbs. should be in the “high four” frame scorecategory. Frame score “six” heifers that mature at 1100-1150 lbsare simply narrow, light muscled, hard fleshing females.2. Heifers should be moderate framed. Data from Heartland CattleCompany shows that medium framed heifers, within a biologicaltype, have the highest fertility year-in and year-out. Taller, largerframed heifers have a longer growth curve and tend to reachpuberty later.MAKING COWS OUT OF HEIFERS 45

3. Color is a personal preference, but an important perceptionwhen trying to establish a uniform cow herd. Our preferenceis a solid black or red bodied heifer. A white or mottled face isacceptable if there is pigment around the eye for reducing theincidence of pink eye.4. Don’t forget the advantages of hybrid vigor! A plannedcrossbreeding or composite program will return big dividendsin the form of improved fertility, growth, longevity and immuneresponse. The key is to develop a closely controlled plan and stickto it so that consistency and uniformity are not sacrificed.5. Heifers should have genetic merit for maternal ability, growth andcarcass traits.a. Maternal traits. Select for a high quality udder and plentifulmilk production; however, milk production should not be sohigh that it interferes with fertility within a particular feedresource environment. In addition, females should shownatural protective behavior toward their calves without beingover-aggressive when managed in their natural environment.b. Growth traits. Females should be able to produce moderateframed, fast gaining, and easy fleshing heifer calves forreplacements. Feed yard progeny should mature at 1,200 to1,400 lbs, with the ability to gain weight rapidly at minimal drymatter conversion rates. Exceptional cattle (depending on ageand condition) can gain up to five lbs per day and convertfeed to gain at a rate of five to one.c. Carcass traits. Females should consistently produce calves thatcan be harvested by 13 to 14 months of age with Choice, YieldGrade 2 carcasses. Carcasses should be between 700-900 lbs,and loin eye area should range from 12.0 to 15.5 square inches.6. Heifers should have a calm disposition. Cattle with quietdispositions exhibit better fertility, weight gain and meat quality. This also means less wear-and-tear on facilities and ranchers!7. Heifers should have a permanent identification so genetic meritand production ability can be measured.8. Heifers should be structurally sound and have functionally soundeyes, teeth, jaw, and udder.9. Heifers should be fully vaccinated on a timely schedule.Research published by Heartland Cattle Company shows properpreconditioning programs can effectively reduce treatment ratesby as much as 20%. Also, it is extremely important that heifercalves are officially calf hood vaccinated (OCV) for brucellosisprior to ten months of age. After ten months of age, heifers runthe risk of showing a positive titer for brucellosis as a young cow.10. Biosecurity issues cannot beignored. High-risk cattle associatedwith Persistently Infected Bovine ViralDiarrhea (PIBVD), Johnne’s andListeriosis should be eliminated viaappropriate testing procedures.11. Heifers should undergo a reproductive soundness exam 35to 45 days prior to breeding, including a reproductive tractscore, body condition score, pelvic measurements, bodyweight, frame score and functional soundness evaluation. When considering pelvic measurements, a conservative view isencouraged. Since there are differences between techniciansand instruments when measuring pelvic area, we prefer to usethese measurements only to sift out obvious problems andbottom-end cattle. These measurements can also be useful inidentifying and tracking sire lines that propagate potential pelvicarea problems in their daughters.12. Heifers should be fed at a controlled rate to weigh 65% of theirmature body weight when they are first bred. Optimum gainand breeding weight will vary according to body condition andestimated mature weight. Some producers prefer to developtheir heifers to only 55% of their mature body weight. On theupside, the latter program will place more selection pressureon fertility. On the downside, pregnancy rates will likely be 5 to15% lower than heifers developed to 65% of their mature bodyweight; and in the case of a significant environmental challenge, pregnancy rate could be reduced by as much as 15 to 50%.13. Body condition score should be 5.5 to 6.0 at time of first breeding.14. Heifers should be synchronized to breed at 13 to 14 monthsof age.15. Heifers should be bred artificially to proven calving ease sire/sat least 21 days ahead of the mature cow herd. This givesthe producer at least one extra cycle to rebreed heifers andstill keep them on a timely calving schedule. Additionally, theproducer can devote all of their attention to first calf heifers ifthey calve before the mature cow herd.16. At least 70% of all heifers should conceive by artificialinsemination, on their first service, to a high accuracy EPD,multiple trait sire.17. Heifers should be pregnancy tested at 45 to 90 days postbreedingso open heifers can be identified early for feedingand harvest.18. Heifers should be developed on a high roughage nutritionalprogram so they will achieve 85% of their mature body weightby the time they calve the first time.19. Heifers should calve unassisted at 22-23 months of age.20. Heifers should develop into a cow that will consistently rebreedon minimal inputs within a 365-day calving interval, over aproductive lifetime of at least seven years.Should I Consider “Professional Heifer Development”?Since Heartland Cattle Company originated the concept ofProfessional Heifer Development in 1990, it has since become arecognized sector of the beef cattle industry. Since its inception, there have been countless articles written on the concept ofprofessional heifer development and many people have attemptedto establish similar programs. While this has been a positive move46 Making Cows out of Heifers

in the cattle industry, it has also led to confusion on the part ofmany producers as to whether they should consider professionalheifer development in their own beef cattle enterprise. When evaluating the need for professional heifer development, it isimperative that a rancher takes the following into account:1. The opportunity value of his labor, feed resources and facilities.2. Value per dollar spent.3. Accountability of the heifer development program in question. To properly evaluate these points a rancher might be ahead if heasked himself the following questions:1. Do I have the labor force, technical expertise, and facilitiesnecessary to effectively handle a heifer development andbreeding program?2. Do I have the time to devote to a heifer development programor would it be more profitable for me to devote my timeelsewhere? (i.e. my farming enterprise, an off-farm job, etc.)3. Do I have enough heifers to make it economically feasible forme to devote my time, labor and facilities to developing andbreeding heifers; or would I be ahead to forward contractprofessionally developed, bred heifers with known genetics?4. Should I consider becoming a specialized terminal producerwhere I send all of my calves (heifers and steers) into a feedingprogram, and buy professionally developed bred heifers withthe proper maternal genetics? Would this concept allow me tomore efficiently market my entire calf crop, reduce my laborrequirements, and increase my overall profitability?5. Would it be more profitable for me to increase my mature cowherd numbers rather than devoting my grass resources todeveloping replacement heifers?6. Should I develop my replacement heifers elsewhere so I candevote my best feed resources to my two and three year oldcows in an effort to improve total cow herd management?7. Should I consider using my crop ground differently? (I.e. plantcash crops with a higher opportunity value as compared toplanting crops necessary for replacement heifer development.)8. What is the long-term comparative cost of buying sale barnheifers with no known information behind them as opposed topurchasing professionally developed heifers with known genetics?9. If I do commit to a heifer development program, is it managedin such a way that I am assured of AI pregnancies vs. clean-upbull pregnancies?10. Does the heifer development program under considerationhave any legitimate history of success, and can they documentreproductive performance? Can they offer multiple references?11. How much could I improve profitability by calving estroussynchronized heifers bred to high accuracy EPD bulls in termsof increased conception rate, earlier calving date, less calvingdifficulty, increased rebreeding rate in second calf heifers, more uniform and predictable genetics and reduced bullrequirements? n1Contact at: 39057 Road 715, McCook, NE 69001; 308-345-4524Fax 308-345-6695 Email: phoughton@heartlandcattle.comGENEX BRINGS YOU THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS– THE BEST SIRES AND THE BEST FINANCING!The Best of Both WorldsGenex provides the quality products its’ U.S. and Canadian members and customers want. The average difference inease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bredto first-calf heifers.CETM, CEM, MCE: Calving Ease Total Maternal, Calving EaseMaternal, Maternal Calving Ease - The difference in percentageof unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calvingease in first-calf daughters. The average ease with which a sire’sdaughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared todaughters of other sires.CW: Carcass Weight (Simmental, Charolais) - The adjustedcarcass weights of a sire’s progeny, expressed in pounds.FAT, BF: Back Fat - The adjusted twelfth rib fat thickness ofa sire’s progeny, expressed in inches.HPG: Heifer Pregnancy (Red Angus) - Differences in percentprobability of female progeny conceiving to calve as 2-year-olds;a more accurate measurement than her sire’s or paternal brothers’scrotal circumference.I: Interim - The EPD is based on performance information of abull’s sire, dam, and relatives.%IMF: Intramuscular Fat (Angus, Hereford) - A predictor of thedifference in a sire’s progeny for percent intramuscular fat in theribeye muscle compared to other sires.ME: Maintenance Energy (Red Angus) - Differences in maturecow maintenance energy requirements. Expressed as megacaloriesper month.MB, MARB: Marbling (Red Angus, Simmental, Charolais) - Theadjusted marbling score of a sire’s progeny, expressed in percent.MH: Mature Height (Angus) - A predictor of the difference inmature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters ofother sires, expressed in inches.MkH: Milking Herds (Angus) - Indicates the number of herdsfrom which daughters are reported.MkD: Milking Daughters (Angus) - Reflects the number ofdaughters having progeny weaning weight records includedin the analysis.MW: Mature Weight (Angus) - A predictor of the difference inmature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughtersof other sires, expressed in pounds.M&G: Maternal Milk & Growth (Hereford) - The Milk EPD plus1/2 the WW EPD. A sire’s M&G EPD reflects what he is expectedto transmit to his daughters for a combination of growth genetics andmaternal production.Milk, MM - The amount of pre-weaning performance gainedby calves which can be attributed to the milking ability of a bull’sdaughters, expressed in pounds of calf.P: Pedigree estimate.REA, RE: Rib Eye Area - Adjusted ribeye area of a sire’sprogeny, measured in square inches.SCR, SC: Scrotal Circumference (Angus, Simmental, Charolais,Hereford) - Adjusted yearling scrotal circumferences of a bull’sprogeny when compared to breed average, in centimeters.SHR: Shear Force (Simmental) - Pounds of force required toshear a steak.STAY: Stayability (Red Angus, Simmental) - Differences in percentprobability of daughters staying productive past the age of six.TM, MWW: Total Maternal, Maternal Weaning Weight (RedAngus, Simmental, Charolais) - Each of these terms measures asire’s ability to transmit milk production and growth rate throughhis daughters. Predicts the weaning weight of a sire’s daughters’calves. Equal to his milk EPD plus 1/2 his WW EPD.WW: Weaning Weight - Adjusted weaning weights of a bull’sprogeny when compared to the breed average, in pounds.YG: Yield Grade (Simmental) - Expressed as a deviation of YieldGrade units where negative values are desirable.YW: Yearling Weight - The adjusted yearling weights of a bull’sprogeny when compared to breed average, in pounds.Indexes$F: Feedlot Value (Angus) - Calculates a $/head difference inexpected progeny performance for post weaning merit. $F usesWW and YW EPDs along with trait inter-relationships. Typicalfeedlot gain value, feed consumption and cost differences areaccounted for in the final calculations.$G: Grid Value (Angus) - Combines quality grade and yield gradeattributes, and is calculated for animals with carcass EPDs,ultrasound EPDs, or both types of EPDs. A three-year rollingaverage is used to establish typical industry economic valuesfor quality grade and yield grade schedules.$B: Beef Value (Angus) - The expected average dollar per headdifference in the progeny post weaning performance and carcassvalue. The $B value is comprised of two pieces: $F and $G.$W: Weaned Calf Value (Angus) - The expected average differencein future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit, expressed in$/head. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associatedwith differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternalmilk and mature cow size.$EN: Cow Energy Value (Angus) - Assesses differences in cowenergy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference indaughters of sires, expressed in dollar savings/cow/year. A largervalue is more favorable when comparing two animals. $EN savingsinclude lactation energy requirements and energy costs associatedwith differences in mature cow size.API: All-Purpose Index (Simmental) - Evaluates sires for use onthe entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers andmature cows) with daughters retained and remaining heifersand steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.TI: Terminal Index (Simmental) - Evaluates sires for use on matureAngus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.BMI$: Baldy Maternal Index (Hereford) - An index to maximizeprofit for commercial cow-calf producers who use Herefordbulls in rotational crossbreeding programs on Angus-basedcows and heifers. Non-dilutor cattle will appear black or darker red.Calving Ease RatingsAngus, Red Angus and Hereford3 3 3 3 Top 10 percent of the breed for low birth weight3 3 3 Top 60 percent of the breed for low birth weight3 3 Above bottom 10 percent of the breed for low birth weight3 Bottom 10 percent of the breed for low birth weightSimmental and Charolais3 3 3 3 Top 10 percent of the breed for low birth weight3 3 3 Top 40 percent of the breed for low birth weight3 3 Above the bottom 10 percent of the breed for low birth weight3 Bottom 10 percent of the breed for low birth weight***Calving Ease Ratings take calving ease EPDs and accuracies into consideration.Beef Staff RecommendationsThe Beef Genetics Staff provides recommendations based onobservations of the bull’s progeny, as well as knowledge of thesires and dams in the pedigree. Information is only provided onbulls with progeny. The table of adjustment factors to be used to estimate across-breedexpected progeny differences (AB-EPDs) for sixteen breeds waspresented at the Beef Improvement Federation Annual Meetingin Calgary, Alberta on July 2 (see attached table). Across-breedadjustment factors have been calculated for growth traits and maternalmilk since 1993. This year adjustment factors for carcass traits havebeen calculated for eight of the sixteen breeds for the first time. Inorder to be included, breeds had to have carcass data in the U.S. MeatAnimal Research Center (USMARC) database and report their carcassEPDs on an actual carcass basis using an age-adjusted endpoint. Bullsof different breeds can be compared on the same EPD scale by addingthe appropriate adjustment factor to the expected progeny differences(EPDs) produced in the most recent genetic evaluations for each of thesixteen breeds. Most breed associations publish EPDs on an annual basis. These EPDspredict differences expected in performance of future progeny of twoor more bulls within the same breed for birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, and maternal milking ability (as reflected in progenyweaning weights). Normally, the EPDs of bulls from different breedscannot be compared because most breed associations compute theirEPDs in separate analyses and each breed has a different base point. The across-breed adjustment factors allow producers to compare theEPDs for animals from different breeds for these traits; these factorsreflect both the current breed difference (for animals born in 2006)and differences in the breed base point. They should only be used withEPDs current as of July 2008 because of potential changes in EPDcalculations from year-to-year.The adjustment factors in the table were updated using EPDs fromthe most recent national cattle evaluations conducted by each ofthe sixteen breed associations (current as of July 2008). The breeddifferences used to calculate the factors are based on comparisonsof progeny of sires from each of these breeds in the GermplasmEvaluation Program at USMARC in Clay Center, Nebraska. Theseanalyses were conducted by USMARC geneticists Larry Kuehn (email:Larry.Kuehn@ars.usda.gov; ph: 402-762-4352) and Mark Thallman(email: Mark.Thallman@ars.usda.gov; ph 402-762-4261).Adjustment Factors to Add to EPDs of SixteenDifferent Breeds to Estimate Across Breed EPDsBirth Weaning Yearling MaternalBreed Wt. Al KuckWillie AltenburgChad EllingsonJon JanssenBrad JohnsonRichard CarlsonThe year 2008 will obviously go down in historyas a year of volatility. However, with all theeconomic swings, the basics of the beef industry arewell positioned. Cattle numbers are down, feedlotsare current, export markets are continuing to open, and by all accounts the industry will not be long onavailable beef. The time is right for the progressivebeef producer to position for the future with improvedgenetics and increased efficiency in their operations.Genex provides genetics to our members andcustomers, and this is a time when beef producersneed to utilize all the genetic tools available. Whetherone agrees with the inputs into calculation of EPDsand resulting indexes, the truth is they are the bestranking system we have and they work. Did yourealize that compared to the 1950s, we are producingtwice as much beef from half as many cows? Thisdoes not come from simple single trait selection, butfrom a total program that puts emphasis in all theappropriate places. We believe breeding cattle is a science. Genex haschosen bulls with a balance of traits to improve longterm profitability. We are looking to the future throughresearch cooperation with the University of Illinois onefficiency testing and the University of Missouri onwhole genome predictions.Genex has a vested interest in the beef industry. Our role is to bring outstanding genetics to enhanceyour profitability and long term sustainability. Yoursuccess is critical to our long term programs. We arecommitted to bringing you the best geneticsby combining cow sense with science.
