Applying for the programThree reasons why AMTEC isright for youLearn skills that companies wantThe first step is the hardest, but once you finish theAMTEC program, you’ll be glad you completed theapplication.Eligibility• Be a U.S. citizen• Have a GED or high school diploma• Have a valid driver’s license• Be able to move 40 pounds• Be eligible to receive a badge for accessto <strong>Oak</strong> <strong>Ridge</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Laboratory</strong> (ORNL)• Be unemployed or underemployedSteps to apply1. Fill out an application at www.roanestate.edu/<strong>amtec</strong>2. You will be contacted to schedule a free CareerReadiness Certificate (CRC) evaluation at a localTennessee Career Center. The evaluation has fourparts: Applied Mathematics, Applied Technology,Locating Information, and Reading for Information.To be eligible for the AMTEC program, you must scoreat the “silver” level on all four parts. However, if youdo not score at the silver level, the Career Center willoffer tutoring in the areas where you need help (at nocost to you), and you may retake any section of thetest.3. Candidates who successfully complete the CRC, andmeet eligibility requirements, will be admitted to theAMTEC program as slots become available. Newclasses start about once a month.1. The AMTEC program is not all or nothing. You areexpected to give every subject your best effort, but ifthere’s an area where you struggle, that’s OK. Your AMTECcertificate will only list courses you complete successfully.2. You learn as a team. New groups of students start at thesame time and follow the same schedule. The approachmeans you’ll have plenty of classmates to lean on forsupport and encouragement, and you’ll develop yourability to work as a team.3. Your training is diverse. The AMTEC program includesfundamental manufacturing training such as OSHA30-hour industrial safety certification, while alsoincluding the option to take courses in cutting edgefields such as composites and solar energy technologies.With AMTEC, you’ll learn principles of lean manufacturing,develop excellent computer skills, learn how to operate afork lift, learn about plumbing and wiring, gain experiencewith high-tech drafting software and much more.These are skills that area companies want in jobcandidates.
