FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSCONTINUEDand sponsors an exceptional book fair every fall. The DolphinBooster Club supports Chadwick’s extensive athletics program. TheLimelighters parent group supports the performing arts. The AnnualFund depends on a network of parents who spend volunteer timecontacting fellow parents to encourage their support of Chadwick’sprograms through charitable giving. Other opportunities includethe VISA program for volunteering in the Admission Office, anddriving for the community service program. We rely on the richnessand diversity of talent in our parent body — there is something foreveryone! Is there voluntary giving at Chadwick?Tuition and fees cover about 80 percent of the cost of a Chadwickeducation. Thus, the school depends on tax-deductible gifts to theAnnual Fund to fully finance the school’s annual operating budget. Each fall, Chadwick parents are asked to contribute to the AnnualFund, and high participation is critical to the school’s success.Currently, the Annual Fund provides over $1.4 million in additionalsupport, and gifts range from $10 to $15,000 or more. Periodically,Chadwick also raises funds for major capital projects such asconstruction and renovation of buildings, extensive equipmentpurchases or growth of the school’s endowment. Recently completedcapital projects include the Leavenworth Library expansion, theGeoffrey Alan Laverty Center for the Performing Arts and theRosenwald Amphitheater. During a capital campaign, donors areasked to support both the Annual Fund and the capital project. Thisensures that the school’s operating budget is not compromised andthe school can continue to thrive.this year’s tests, but for all of life’s tests. And they understand thatthe best education is a values-added experience where young peoplelearn not only reading, math and science, but also the importance ofhard work, leadership, personal responsibility and good citizenship.”Is there a financial aid program at Chadwick?Consistent with our mission, we are committed to providingopportunities for all qualified students to attend Chadwick Schoolwithout regard to their families’ financial circumstances. Forthe academic year 2011-2012, just over $3.2 million in needbasedfinancial aid has been committed to 18.5% of our students.Chadwick’s financial aid program is designed to bridge the gapbetween what a family can contribute (based on a confidentialand standardized needs analysis) and what it actually costs toattend Chadwick. Chadwick offers financial aid on the basis of thedocumented need of the family and the availability of funds. Inaddition to our standard financial aid program, we also have a needbasedmerit scholarship, the Malone Scholarship, for new studentsentering Grades 7 – 12. The submission of an application forfinancial aid has no bearing on the deliberations of the admissionscommittees or the assessment of an applicant’s potential as aChadwick student. What are the tuition and fees?Tuition for the school year 2011-2012 is:Grade 2 Grades K – 1, 3 – 6 Grades 7 – 8 Grades 9 – 12$22,200 $23,200 $26,000 $27,400What is an independent school?Chadwick School is one of 1,200 members of the NationalAssociation of Independent Schools (NAIS). Independent schoolsare private, pre-collegiate learning institutions and each has adistinct mission that expresses its philosophy, values and goals.Independent schools are primarily supported by tuition payments, charitable contributions and endowment revenue. All independent schools meet accreditation standards and eachis held accountable by its Board of Trustees. According to NAIS,independent schools are successful because they offer “close-knitcommunities, individualized attention for students, supportivelearning environments, high-quality and committed teachers,hands-on learning opportunities, educational experiences beyondthe classroom, motivated and interesting peer groups and activelyengaged parents.” NAIS affirms that their member schools“recognize that exceptional schools prepare students not just forIn addition to tuition, there is a one-time new student matriculationfee of $1,200. Applying for Financial AidAn independent school education is a significant family investment. To help make a Chadwick School education affordable, we offertuition payment options as well as a financial aid program. Ouraffordability program is based on the belief that students willing tomeet the challenge of a college-preparatory education should be giventhe opportunity to pursue their goals without regard to their families’financial status.A limited amount of tuition assistance is available to kindergartenthrough 12th grade families with demonstrated financial need. Suchneed is defined as the difference between the school’s tuition andfees and what the family can reasonably contribute. This assistanceis intended as a supplement to family resources. Financial aid andadmission decisions are made separately. The school maintains strictconfidentiality for all financial aid recipients. In common with most independent schools, Chadwick School’sFinancial Aid Committee determines a family’s contribution usingthe standardized calculation derived by the School and StudentService for Financial Aid (SSS). This system considers gross taxableincome, assets, liabilities, family size and number of students intuition-charging schools. After an allowance for basic necessitiesand taxes, the remaining funds are considered discretionaryincome, a percentage of which should be available for educationalexpenses. Financial need is determined by a family’s ability tomeet educational expenses. Both parents retain the obligation tocontribute what they can afford to the education of their children, regardless of any divorce or other agreements stating otherwise. In adivorce situation, both the custodial and non-custodial parent mustcomplete the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) and submit theprior year’s tax forms, with all supporting schedules and W-2 forms. If the custodial parent has remarried, Chadwick will also considerthe assets of the stepparent, bearing in mind the obligations thatthe stepparent might have to his or her own natural children. Thecooperation of all parents is required before Chadwick will considerassisting a candidate.Renewal of a financial aid award is based on proof of a family’scontinued financial need. New forms and tax returns must be submittedeach year. Information about the financial aid process can be found onour website, www.chadwickschool.org/admission.Chadwick School has always been committed to serving all qualifiedstudents in our community. Unfortunately, sometimes our requestsfor funds exceed the amount budgeted for financial aid. If you qualifyfor aid but are not given an award and you then enroll your child, youmay reapply for the following year. However, we cannot guaranteefinancial aid at that time.Chadwick School also offers a very limited number of merit/need based scholarships. Through a generous grant from theMalone Foundation, new students whose families are alsoapplying for financial aid are eligible to receive this award. TheMalone Scholarship is open to new students entering Grades7 – 12.
