Applying for Financial AidAn independent school education is a significant family investment. To help make a Chadwick School education affordable, we offertuition payment options as well as a financial aid program. Ouraffordability program is based on the belief that students willing tomeet the challenge of a college-preparatory education should be giventhe opportunity to pursue their goals without regard to their families’financial status.A limited amount of tuition assistance is available to kindergartenthrough 12th grade families with demonstrated financial need. Suchneed is defined as the difference between the school’s tuition andfees and what the family can reasonably contribute. This assistanceis intended as a supplement to family resources. Financial aid andadmission decisions are made separately. The school maintains strictconfidentiality for all financial aid recipients. In common with most independent schools, Chadwick School’sFinancial Aid Committee determines a family’s contribution usingthe standardized calculation derived by the School and StudentService for Financial Aid (SSS). This system considers gross taxableincome, assets, liabilities, family size and number of students intuition-charging schools. After an allowance for basic necessitiesand taxes, the remaining funds are considered discretionaryincome, a percentage of which should be available for educationalexpenses. Financial need is determined by a family’s ability tomeet educational expenses. Both parents retain the obligation tocontribute what they can afford to the education of their children, regardless of any divorce or other agreements stating otherwise. In adivorce situation, both the custodial and non-custodial parent mustcomplete the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) and submit theprior year’s tax forms, with all supporting schedules and W-2 forms. If the custodial parent has remarried, Chadwick will also considerthe assets of the stepparent, bearing in mind the obligations thatthe stepparent might have to his or her own natural children. Thecooperation of all parents is required before Chadwick will considerassisting a candidate.Renewal of a financial aid award is based on proof of a family’scontinued financial need. New forms and tax returns must be submittedeach year. Information about the financial aid process can be found onour website, www.chadwickschool.org/admission.Chadwick School has always been committed to serving all qualifiedstudents in our community. Unfortunately, sometimes our requestsfor funds exceed the amount budgeted for financial aid. If you qualifyfor aid but are not given an award and you then enroll your child, youmay reapply for the following year. However, we cannot guaranteefinancial aid at that time.Chadwick School also offers a very limited number of merit/need based scholarships. Through a generous grant from theMalone Foundation, new students whose families are alsoapplying for financial aid are eligible to receive this award. TheMalone Scholarship is open to new students entering Grades7 – 12. Students are selected on the basis of academic excellence, motivation, exemplary character and potential for contributing tothe Chadwick community and beyond.
