tomical instruction, I do have to impart someknowledge of aviation and aerodynamics sostudents can accurately capture the spirit of thebird. Also, when modeling birds - particularlybirds in flight - for casting, you have to be ableto sculpt in a way that liberates the bird fromthe density of the bronze. You have to give theillusion of flight and make the viewer believein the buoyancy of the bird or else the sculpturewill look and feel like a pile of molten lead. How has your work changed over the years?I’ve been a teacher for nearly 25 years andI routinely tell my students to “simplify.”Lately, I have been heeding my own adviceand doing the same with my work. I alwaystell my students that when you havecompleted a work, take out one thing andsee if the piece can survive without it. Oftenit can. You never want to make yourwork so busy that it is an assault on the eye.Equus FoundSandy Scott, NSSBronze - 14” x 14.5” x 33”Everything begins with a simple sketch. It’s surprising how many commissionscan be obtained with a well-defined drawing. From there I’ll create amaquette and then it gets pointed up twice more before the final size. It’san old-fashioned way of doing things, but I find that during the point-ups Idiscover the errors in design. When working over-life-size the artist alwayshas to consider distortion. What might look good in the initial maquettemight not blow up well in the final product and adjustments are made atevery step of the process. I’d also like to add that creating these commissionsis a collaborative effort between the artist and the foundry artisans andstaff. It’s a team effort, like building a house. I couldn’t do any of it withoutthe support of a lot of fine, hard-working people. I am grateful for them. What advice do you have for young sculptors?I am a firm believer in academia in the arts. If you have the means to goto art school and learn the basics of design, composition, color theory, anatomy and drawing, do it! All good art is founded on a concrete understandingof these fundamentals.Clinton Library Eagle (Little Rock, Arkansas)Sandy Scott, NSSBronze - 10” x 6” x 17”Which artists have had the greatest influence onyour work?Although I love a great many European artists, I havea great fondness for American art and artists. I admirethe art deco movement for its clarity of form. I giveworkshops at Brookgreen Gardens and I think there isnothing more inspiring than the sculpture exhibited onthe grounds. I suppose some of my favorite sculptorsare Barre, Bugatti, Weems, Huntington, Jennewein, and DeLue. My absolute favorite sculpture wouldhave to be Riders of the Dawn by Adolph Weinman. You’ve created several public monuments. Take usthrough your process, from concept to completion.TailhookSandy Scott, NSSBronze - 12.5” x 9.25” x 31”
