Global Observing SystemsInformation Center (GOSIC)Christina J. de Groot-LiefProgram ManagerNOAA/NESDIS/National Climatic Data CenterAsheville, NCWCRP Data AdvisoryCouncil Second SessionMarch 4 & 5, 2013EUMETSAT

The goal of the GOSIC is to provide users with the data theyare looking for and the tools to search for these data in a variety ofways from a simple text search, to searching by keyword, program, observation, variable, Data Center, to name a few.Now-a-days users are not simply looking for data orproducts. They are looking for data they can trust. They are also notlooking for a whole data set but want to download just the data theyare interested in, for example for a specific station or variable. The GOSIC operates as an in-between the Data Centers andthe user community to facilitate data discovery and access.Users can find data directly through the GOSIC Portal orcontact the GOSIC staff for help.

The GOSIC:• does not hold data but rather links to world data centerdatasets where users can download data• was established in 1997 by the GCOS Joint Data andInformation Management Panel (JDIMP)• was originally developed at the University of Delaware• has been reviewed by independent panels via GCOS• has been operational at NCDC since 2007

Applications and Tools for GOSIC UsersMetadata• The GOSIC metadata records areheld in the NASA Global ChangeMaster Directory (GCMD) and canbe queried through a GOSIC portalto the GCMD. This is aCooperative effort with NASA.http://gcmd.nasa.gov/KeywordSearch/Home.do?Portal=gosic&MetadataType=0• GOSIC metadata can be searchedby Societal Benefit Areas on theGEO Portal.http://www.geoportal.org/

Applications and Tools for GOSIC UsersThe GOSIC workswith the internationalclimate communityto aid incommunicatinginformation. For example, input forNOAAs ClimateChange Dashboard ispowered by the GOSIChttp://climate.gov

ATRAC MetadataCreation ToolDevelopment of userfriendlymetadata creationtool by the NCDC ArchiveBranch.Input is in plain text withdrop down menus forkeywords etc.No longer need to knowISO or XML to createmetadata records.Input is converted intostandard metadata recordand can be downloaded bythe user.http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/atrac/index.html
