The right analyzer for any applicationFoods, chemical | pharmaceutical products, building materials or animal feed – youname it, the moisture or water content hasa decisive impact on price, processability andquality, ranging from raw materials to finalproducts. Determining this moisture contentis one of the most common analyses in productdevelopment and in the manufacturingprocess. Here, the most diverse requirementson speed and resolution of the values measuredor on the operating design of the moistureanalyzers must also be considered inall cases. As a leading provider of moistureanalysis equipment, Sartorius is thoroughlyfamiliar with the needs of its customers andthus offers a wide range of equipment thatis continuously being enhanced.Infrared drying – fast and preciseA fast alternative to the classic oven dryingmethod, infrared dryers from the Sartoriusseries of moisture analyzers are beingincreasingly used. These analyzers are compactand designed for routine operation inproduction and in applications involvingincoming inspection. They feature the resolutionof an analytical balance, and are ideal forresearch and development. Moreover, we supplythese moisture analyzers in versions withan EC type-approval certificate for use inlegal metrology. Sartorius offers a customsolution for nearly any requirements. A wideselection of infrared heat sources, such as ahalogen lamp, a CQR quartz glass heater anda ceramic heating element, enable thesemoisture analyzers to be optimally adapted tothe intended application.Differential weighingIf the oven drying method is absolutely essential, the differential weighing program ofthe LA Reference series of balances fromSartorius efficiently manages large volumesof data and automatically calculates thedifferences between the tare weight, initialsample weight and backweights.Coulometry – selective detection of waterIf you need to determine not only the moisture, but also the water content of a sample, the coulometric Karl <strong>Fisher</strong> titration methodis the most commonly used technique.A further advancement in KF filtration is thecombination method incorporated in theWDS 400 Water Detection System fromSartorius. WDS 400 allows accurate measurementsto be performed down to a detectionlimit of 1 µg of water. At the same time, itenables quantitative differentiation amongsurface water, capillary water, and waterof crystallization. In addition, WDS 400completely eliminates the need for usingtest reagents required in KF titration.Microwave resonance technologyThe microwave resonance method offers theadvantage of particularly fast measurementbelow one second. At the same time, it isnon-destructive, which means that samplescan be further used for subsequent tests. The basis of this new Sartorius product line isthe LMA300P, a modular system. This systemconsists of a control and evaluation unit anda resonator module in which the moistureof a sample is measured. Applications for theLMA300P cover measurement of the moisturein pourable, granulated and viscous productswith a moisture content between 0.1% and85%.Halogen lampCeramic heating elementCQR quartz glass heater

Sartorius MA35:Easy … very easy! The MA35 is the new basic model in themoisture analyzer series from Sartorius. Itsperformance functions and operating conceptare geared toward daily routine processessuch as repetitive QC monitoring of samplesas performed during in-process controland incoming goods inspection. To makethe MA35 even more user-friendly, we havedone away with seldom-used programmingoptions without compromising flexibilityor measurement accuracy. No need for programmingEnd-point determination is fully automatic. Itis no longer necessary to program a shutoffparameter. The MA35 continuously monitorsthe drying process and stops the measurementas soon as the sample has reached a constantweight – i.e., when no more weight loss can bedetected despite heating. A built-in weighingsystem provides the measurement accuracyrequired for this with 1-mg resolution that isoptimized for use in high temperature ranges. For sample heating, the MA35 is equippedwith two powerful metal tubular-shapedheating elements, providing 360 watts ofpower. These heating elements, also calleddark radiators, are both rugged and durable.Compared to heating lamps made from glass,e.g. infrared lamps or halogen heaters, theseare especially resistant to dirt and vibration. Inaddition, the MA35's metal heating elementscan be used in accordance with the strictguidelines of the FDA and HACCP in caseswhere glass is prohibited in certain productionprocesses.Easy-to-understand and error-freemoisture analysisThe operating design focuses on accuracy andease of use. The concise display shows the userall important information at a single glance.Easy-to-understand icons guide you in threesteps from taring the sample pan to startingthe measurement. The MA35 has done awaywith the regular Program Selection menu, opting instead for a limited number of dryingroutines that can be saved in the non-volatilememory. All important operating parameterscan be accessed and changed in seconds, giving you more flexibility. The optional printer, YDP03-0CE, enables youto print analysis results on a short report tosave on paper usage. If you need comprehensivedocumentation, you can also print outthe sample analysis results as well as theweighing system and temperature calibrationas a detailed GLP report.

Sartorius MA150: The compact class featuringmaximum performance with minimum space requirementsFor routine operationA rugged design with low space requirementsand easy operation are the major features ofthese analyzers. Fully automatic drying of asample until a constant weight is reachedeliminates the need for programming an endpointshutoff parameter. Twenty drying routinescan be saved to give you the flexibilityyou need when the moisture content of additional,“out-of-the-ordinary” samples ofmaterial has to be measured.Customizable and fastSartorius offers you a choice of two differentmoisture analyzers that cover diverse requirementson moisture measurements. Whicheverheat source you opt for, both analyzers deliverresults within just minutes. For temperaturesensitivesamples, a ceramic heating elementensures especially gentle heating over theentire surface. The other choice, a CQR quartzglassheater, optimizes the analysis time evenfurther, which is already ultrafast for theanalyzer featuring the ceramic heater.Application-specific solutionsPractical accessories round off the entire lineupof Sartorius moisture analyzers. Theseinclude, for instance, an in-use dust cover thatis included with the standard equipment supplied, type approval for applications in legalmetrology, and a special version of the moistureanalyzer without openly accessible glasscomponents in compliance with the stringentFDA and HACCP requirements that ban theuse of glass in production.

Sartorius MA100: Analytical precision, combined with flexibility and dynamicsAs accurate as an analytical balanceThe MA100 is the only infrared dryer in theworld that features a built-in weighing systemwith 0.1-mg resolution and an EC typeapprovalcertificate. A motorized heating unitmoves over the sample to open or close thesample chamber. This reduces interferingeffects when a sample is placed on the pan ora measurement is started. The pacesettingdesign enables the MA100 to achieve a measuringaccuracy well beyond that provided byconventional infrared dryers.Automatic adaptation to reference valuesThe acronym “SPRM” stands for “SwiftParameter Adjustment to a given ReferenceMethod.” This function enables the operatingparameters of MA100 to be adapted to theresults of an available reference method andto be saved as a drying routine. Optimizationof operating parameters doesn’t get anyfaster than this.Flexible and modularThe Sartorius MA100 analyzers give you achoice of three different infrared heatsources: a halogen lamp for standard applications,a ceramic heating element for gentleheating of temperature-sensitive samplesand a CQR quartz glass heater. The CQRcombines the fast drying capability of a halogenlamp with the gentle heating capabilityof a ceramic heater for drying samples evenlyover their entire surface. A printer that canbe optionally integrated into the housingeliminates the tangle of cables so typical ofan external printer, and helps tidy up yourwork area.A clean solutionDid you accidentally spill a sample? Are therespatters of grease inside the sample chamber? No problem with the MA 100. The Plug & Dry ®feature enables you to easily slide out thecover with the heater for thorough cleaning, without the risk of cleaning agent enteringthe inside of the housing.

Sartorius Reference LA: Efficientmanagement of backweighing dataManagement of extensive weighing data, such as those generated, for instance, in theclassic oven drying method, is a powerfulfeature of the differential weighing functionin the Sartorius LA Reference series of balances. For up to 999 samples, these balancessave the tare weight, initial sample weightand the backweight, and use these data tocalculate the final result. It does not matter in which sequence themeasured data are logged – LA Referenceadapts to the individual needs of the user.A printout of all weights on the optionallyavailable YDP03-0CE data printer is generatedaccording to the sequence of the samplenumbers.

Sartorius WDS 400: Selective detection of surface water, capillary water and water of crystallizationWater, not moisture<strong>Thermo</strong>gravimetric methods, such as theoven drying method, use the weight loss of asample to determine the total content of allvolatile components and not, however, thepure water content. As a rule, the latter taskis performed using electrochemical techniquesthat are based on the principle ofcoulometry (coulomb = electric charge). Themost commonly known methods are coulometricKarl <strong>Fisher</strong> titration for solid and liquidsamples and the phosphorus pentoxidemethod for trace analysis of gases. However, both methods require complicated equipment;moreover, KF titration necessitates theuse of additional chemicals in order to performan analysis. The WDS 400 Water DetectionSystem from Sartorius combines thesethree standard methods into a high-resolutionand easy procedure for selective detectionof water in solids and pastes.Get all three in oneThe WDS 400 adopts the principle of convectionheating from the oven drying methodin order to drive out the entire moisture froma sample. A ceramic disc coated withextremely hygroscopic phosphorus pentoxideP 2 O 5 completely absorbs the water from theresulting gas mixture and bonds water moleculesto phosphoric acid H 3 PO 4 on the discsurface in a chemical reaction. By coulometry,i.e., by an electric current generated at theceramic disc, phosphoric acid is broken downinto phosphorus pentoxide P 2 O 5 , hydrogen Hand oxygen O. Based on Faraday’s law, it isknown how much current is necessary inorder to split off all hydrogen atoms from achemical compound. Thus, the WDS 400 usesthe amount of electric current to calculatethe quantity of water driven out of a sample.Highly accurate and selectiveThis combination method works so accuratelythat it is even possible to detect one singlemicrogram of water. Beyond that, theWDS 400 enables water fractions to bedifferentiated according to surface water, capillary water and water of crystallization(the latter is chemically bound water).Easy operationAll the user has to do is just weigh-in asample. The WDS 400 does not require anycomplicated handling of detection reagents, many of which are toxic. For measurement of the water content, theuser can choose the type of carrier gas, eithernitrogen (Class 5.0) or room air. For usingroom air, the WDS 400 has a built-in pumpand a drying unit.Dry nitrogen Oven up to 400°C Nitrogen + H 2 O P 2 O 5 + H 2 O cell Dry nitrogenwith H 2 + O 2r r r▲Electronics▲rl▲▼rrBalancePCPrinter

Sartorius LMA300P:<strong>Moisture</strong> analysis within a split secondThe LMA300P works with microwaveresonance technology. In this indirect measurementmethod, a harmonic electromagneticresonator field is built up by a microwavegenerator in a sensor (applicator). When theapplicator is filled with a sample, the waterin the sample interferes with the oscillationbehavior (resonance) of the microwave, orinteracts with the resonance field, changingthe height and width of the resonancefrequency peak.CalibrationThis change in resonance field is detectedby a sensor, and the analyzer CPU calculatesthe moisture content of the sample basedon the calibration previously carried out. Thebasic analyzer calibration required can bedone by the classic oven drying method or, ofcourse, using an infrared moisture analyzerfrom the Sartorius MA series.Fast measurementThe microwave resonance method offers theadvantage of particularly fast measurementin under one second. At the same time, it isnon-destructive, which means that samplescan be further used for subsequent tests.Changes in the color and surface structureof the sample, as is frequently the case, forinstance, in natural raw materials, does nothave any effect on calibration or thus onthe measured result, unlike near infraredspectroscopy. The microwave resonancemethod is not limited to measurement of thesurface moisture; rather, it also determinesthe core moisture thanks to its operatingprinciple.Application areasThe LMA300P can be used for nearly allpourable and granulated products as well asviscous liquids, such as whitewash and othersimilar materials. The measuring range isbetween approx. 0.1–85% moisture. Theprerequisite for operating the analyzer isto calibrate measurements on the basis ofa measurement procedure providing absoluteaccuracy. The major application area forthe LMA300P is incoming and in-processquality control.DesignThe LMA300P is a modular-designedsystem consisting of a control and evaluationunit, LMA300PA, and a resonator module,LMA300PR. This type of modular designallows a different resonator type to beused (available on request), and enables theanalyzer to be easily adapted to customerspecificapplications.Integrated PCMicrowavegeneratorResonatorSample0.2Sensor0.15Resonance frequencyS 21Empty applicator in resonator0.1Bandwidth0.05Filled applicator in resonator02.32.35 2.4 2.45 2.5f/GHz
