Her decision wascemented during what she callsa “normal high school life” atStella Niagara. She joined theFranciscan Sisters of Penanceand Christian Charity and afterthree years of trainingat the convent shebegan teachinghigh schoolat BishopMcMahon inBuffalo. SisterMarcyannexplains thatalthough shehad previously consideredbecoming a teacher, her path was dictated primarilyby the needs of the order. “Itis an international order,” shesays. “We have sisters that aremissionaries all over the world, and others who are socialworkers or teachers. There areall kinds of fields and possibilities, but I did whatever it wasthat they needed me to do.”In 1967 she was able toreturn to Buffalo, from a largeco-ed school in New Jersey,to be near family and beganher teaching career at SacredHeart. Sister Marcyann makesno apologies for her no-nonsenseteaching philosophy, “Mybelief is that you are in schoolto learn as much as you can”she says. “If you are not strictthen the students will not getwhat they need and will notbe prepared—not just for theRegents exam but for collegeand beyond. She says that herfavorite part of teaching is that,“Every single student is different. Each is a unique personalitywho is finding her niche.”Sister Marcyann teachesHistory at Buffalo Academy ofthe Sacred Heart. Along withher religious life, Sr. Marcyannenjoys daily walks and reading, she also enjoys cross countryskiing and attending the occasionalBuffalo Bills or Sabresgames.Through the year, whenreturning alumnae come backto Sacred Heart Academy fora tour, they would often askfor if they could stop by Sr.Marcyann’s classroom to thankher for being such a stronginfluence in their lives. With a twinkle in hereye, Sr. Marcyanngreets the alumna asshe recalls that they“sat in the secondrow, third seat ofperiod two.” Sr.Marcyann’s love for herstudents, for Sacred HeartAcademy and for teaching isso much a part of who she is,though she never wanted thestudents to know just howmuch.Amy Betros andNorm PaoliniSt. Luke’s Mission of MercyAmy Betros and Norm Paoliniare the Co-Founders and Co-Directors of St. Luke’s Missionof Mercy, a Roman CatholicMission that ministers to thepoor and the homeless on theEast Side of Buffalo.Prior to co-founding St.Luke’s, Norm was a cancer researchscientist at Roswell Parkand Amy was the popular ownerof Amy’s Place on Main Streetacross from the UB SouthCampus. By Amy Fleischauer, ’92gloves10 Cordecho spirit. mind. body.her mother’sJoanne Rackl Fleischauer, ’67Amy was inducted into theDistinguished AlumnaeSociety of Sacred HeartAcademy in 2008.his SHA story begins like many others, with the parents’decision to sacrifice so that their children can attenda good, Catholic school. My grandparents sent their twodaughters, my aunt (Margaret Rackl Loesch ‘64) and mymother (Joanne Rackl Fleischauer ‘67) to SHA.The story continues thirty years later as Joanneyells to her own two daughters every time the familydrove down Main Street, “Look girls! That’s my highschool! I loved it there!” She later went back to work so thatmy sister (Bethany Fleischauer Garbutt ’96)and I could attend that same good, Catholicschool on Main Street.Sacred Heart has always been known forits high academic standards. Yet, my mom’sfamous SHA stories in our family all involved three things:fun, friends and involvlement. Upon reflection, it is easyto see that the deep sense of community, spirituality, andservice I saw in my mother as an adult was rooted and nurturedat SHA. There she learned that meaningful prayerdid not only occur in the quiet space of the 3rd floor SHAchapel, but also in the many ways service can be providedto others, especially when that service involved bringingpeople together in a fun way. This was exemplified as my mother’s story continuedinto her teaching days at Christ the King School. When theassociated parish introduced full-time perpetual adoration,my mother immediately signed up for an hour ofweekly prayer in the parish chapel. That same week, sheapproached several of her fellow teachers and SHA grads tobegin a service club with the school students. That groupcontinues to give hundreds of students the opportunity tolearn through service each year. This story took a devastating turn in the fall of 2006when my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.Although it remains the largest story of loss in our family, itis also a story of understanding, courage and service.During her struggle, my sister and I began to knowmy mother more deeply than just in her role of “Mom.”She handled her illness with amazing patience, grace, andhumor, continuing to serve and to build community evenamid the halls of Roswell and within the confines of herhospital bed at home. As more and more cards, flowers, meals, thoughtful gifts and visitors arrived daily at ourhome, my sister and I began to witness what an amazingcommunity of love my mother was a part of. We came tounderstand these countless people that represented themany communities my mother was a part of, were simplydoing what Mom had done time and time again for them;that the immense amount of love shared was in direct proportionto the friend that she had always been.Soon after Mom’s first surgery, I was watching a televisionshow in which a fictional reporter was interviewingan actress about her mentors. The actress mentioned hermom. At the end of the scene the reporter asked, “How areyou different from your mother?” The actress respondedwith a smile, “In as few ways as possible, I hope”. I knowwhat she meant.Almost all stories of pancreatic cancer end quickly andpainfully. When someone dies, no matter what the cause, there are always boxes and closets of things to sort through. After Mom’s death in July of 2007, I found myself desperatelytrying identify the things that I wanted to keep andremember her by. It seemed odd at the time, but it was hergloves that I was drawn to the most. I simply knew I had tohave them.I believe that I was asked to write this article as anupbeat tribute to a fantastic SHA girl. I hope that I have accomplishedthat in writing about my mother. But, an honestaccount of the continuing story is not entirely cheery. There are many days when I feel more anger and sadnessthen I know what to do with; when the hole left by Mom’sabsence threatens to consume me. I continue to be surprisedby how often I get up to call her about a friend’s latestnews or to recount the menu at the restaurant I visited. The hole remains. That is part of the story too.I still have my mother’s gloves and the reason I choseto grasp on to them is now clear. Those gloves remind meto be my mother’s hands in the world; to serve and buildcommunity wherever I am. And they remind me, just as mymother would have done, to have more than my share offun while doing so.The Joanne Fleischauer Scholarship is awarded to aChrist the King 8th grader wishing to attend SHA, whodemonstrate a commitment to service. Special considerationgiven to those applicants who also demonstrate acommitment to having fun.Bethany Fleischauer Garbutt, ’96, Joanne RacklFleischauer, ’67 and Amy Fleischauer, ’92.Prayer Vigil for SisterMarcyann Kowalczyk, OSFThe Sacred Heart Academy community is saddenedto learn of the illness of Sister Marcyann,a longtime teacher and friend of our alumnae, parents, faculty and staff. Mock InterviewsProvide LearningExperiences forStudents andAlumnaethereal-worldexperienceBy Barbara V. Hooven, ’85Thank you to the following alumnaefor giving of their time and talentsto help with our LeadershipProgram by performing mockinterviews for our juniors. If youare interested in assisting withthis project next year pleasecontact Jeanine Purcell, Director ofAdvancement.Margaret Lannon Anderson ‘88Carrie Csizar ‘93Catherine Turner Flynn ‘81Elizabeth Barcak Horrigan ‘64Barbara Hooven ‘85Katherine Occhiuto Ricketts’66Susan Barcak Uba ‘62Marilyn Wittman ‘66Ann Marie Smits Wegrzyn ‘76Catherine Turner Flynn ‘8Recently, I had the unique opportunity to return to SHA and to share some ofmy “career wisdom” with the next generation of women who will make up our futureworkforce. On Thursday, June 4, I participated in a series of “mock-interviews” with severaljuniors applying for one of two positions - one at a popular retail establishment aroundtown and the other at a local television news station. My role was to act as the personnelcoordinator for each establishment, ask each student a series of pointed questions andthen provide feedback to them on their answers, thereby providing them with some advanceexperience for a “real-world” interview situation. Overall, the ladies of SHA (asusual) came prepared to meet the challenge at hand and did well in the interviews. Ourdiscussion points ranged from general issues of preparedness in researching a companyand asking the right questions of an employer to behavioral techniques that allow one tobecome comfortable in any interview situation. While these mock interviews were intendedto assist the students of SHA, as an alumna ofthe class of ‘85, I can honestly say that I too cameaway from the situation having learned somethingfrom the experience. My meetings withthe students led me to recall my own days in thehallowed halls of SHA and the many challengesto be met. Seeing them actively engaged in schoolwork and effectively managing their time duringthe lunch period to participate in these interviews, demonstrated both their dedication and their willingness to go the extra mile. This is the type of real-world preparedness, however, that SHA has always instilled inthose young women who came before, those presently enrolled at the school and thosewho will walk its halls in the future. Thereis an independence and a confidence thatis instilled within us at SHA that allows usto take on new challenges. Although thetypes of activities that SHA has providedto achieve those ends has changed anddeveloped as the times have changed, thesame spirit and support extended to uswhich allows us to grow into independentyoung women and future professionals, regardless of our career path, has alwaysremained a constant. It was nice to see thenext generation of students so eager toparticipate.Barabara Hooven, 88 offers some interview advice.I found each student to be very respectful, polite and well-mannered. It is a qualitythat was easily seen in each of them. While every student brought their unique personalityto the table, what still emerged from each of them was their sincere kindness andtheir genuine interest. It was enjoyable to offer feedback to each student and to realizethat I could give back something to assist them in their future. It was very evident thateach one had a genuine interest in expanding their knowledge of how to be a better interviewee. Many of them nodded in response to constructive feedback and even realizedthose areas needing improvement all on their own. The actual process of the interview, however, was effective in allowing them to have that opportunity to practice and to learnfrom the things that they did well and the things they could improve upon before theyexperience the real thing. This was a great learning experience for students and alumnae and I was proud tobe a part of it.’49’54 ’59’64’69 ’74 ’79’89Reunion Scrapbook SHASnaps!’9416 Cordecho spirit. mind. body. spirit. mind. body. cordecho 17
