Behind the Scenes with
She’s stunning. The gown, the hair, the make-up
– what a glow! Somewhere inbetween the nail
biting bundle of nerves she was the day before
and walking down the aisle, she has undergone
a Cinderella-like transformation to the vision of
beauty every bride becomes.
So how did that happen?
Moon Studio Day Spa By
Here at Moon Studio we are the fairy godmothers holding
wands. It is our personal mission to make sure, to the best of
our abilities, that all your wedding day dreams come true. Part
of how we do that is by being up-to-date on the latest up-do
and bridal make-up classes.
This is how the story begins…We like to have all our brides
come in a few weeks ahead of time for what we call a “pre-do.”
The last thing a bride needs to worry about on her wedding
Photography compliments of Moon
Studio Day Spa
day is hair and make-up, so we actually perform a run-thru of
what she’d like to see on the big day… a “pre-do.” This takes away
any question of whether a style suits a bride or if she has enough
hair for the style she wants. Thanks to the addition of a full wig
room here at Moon Studio, if a bride finds her hair is not long
enough or thick enough for her dream “do” we now offer both
long term and temporary extensions. Maybe she wants a few
highlights or lowlights in her hair only on “the big day.”
We can do that almost as easily as a wave of our
wand.
If our bride wants something a little more permanent, we also
offer a full range of color services. You will find us happy to get
you ready for your big day by painting sun-kissed highlights or
adding radiant shine to your existing hue with a glaze. There
is no end to what we can do. Have you ever had your eyebrows
sculpted or your eyelashes tinted? We recommend it to all our
brides as a way to ensure your wedding photos are flawless.
Sometimes the bride’s wedding story includes some pampering.
That’s why many of our wedding packages include champagne
and chocolate. A little relaxation: that’s what every hardworking
Cinderella could use. One of the most popular services prewedding
is our signature Spa Pedicure: trimming and filing of
the toenails, pushing and nipping of the extra cuticle, removal of
calluses, a relaxing massage of feet and legs, a warm hydrating
paraffin mask, and of course, painting. For the bride that needs
Ashley Loven
a little extra de-stressing we also offer such indulgent services as full
body massage or facials. Of course, we won’t forget the hardworking
maid of honor or groom! Moon Studio has special packages just for
them.
Before you know it the “big day” has arrived. As the bride and her
attendants settle in with some coffee, tea, or even cocoa, her photographer
is snapping a few pictures. Then comes our favorite part:
hearing about the bridesmaids’ dresses, how the rehearsal dinner
went, and all the other little details that bring us back to our own
special day. When every hair is in place and everyone is happy, we
snap a few pictures of our finished artwork and send them on their
way. Just in case, we also offer a private dressing room for the bride
whose limo meets her here. And that is just the beginning of the
whole story, a perfect start to a perfect day. Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo!
The team at Moon Studio has many years of experience creating
fairytale endings. To see a full list of what we offer, and see some
examples of our work look us up on Facebook or visit us at www.
Making Vermont
Famous For Wine
Part of a working fifth-generation family farm in the pastoral Lamoille
River Valley of Vermont, Boyden Valley Winery uses the finest local apples,
fruits, and our own grapes and estate maple syrup to produce our
premium wines. Wines range from “Big Barn Red” (a bold red), elegant
whites, and our “Vermont Ice” which is part of Vermont’s premier line
of Ice Wines.
Located in a restored 1825 carriage barn
at the intersection of Routes 15 and 104 in
Cambridge, Vermont, Boyden Valley Winery is
steeped in the culture and agricultural heritage
of Vermont’s Green Mountains. David Boyden’s
dream came to life when he opened the winery
in 1996 after studying in France, Germany, and
Quebec. The winery currently produces 4,000 to
5,000 cases of wine a year, distributed across the
state of Vermont, and can be found at farmers’
markets, local shops, grocery stores, and many high-end local restaurants.
The wine can also be purchased at our showroom where
thousands of tourists visit yearly to experience David’s passion for
wine making. Visitors sample wine, take tours, and enjoy cheese
plates on the terrace that overlooks one of the vineyards.
It was as a visitor that Linda (Rondeau) met David. On a trip to
Stowe from Montreal, Linda stopped to ask for directions when she
saw lights on in the barn - the rest is history. After dating for almost
two years they were married in the summer of 1999. Their wedding
and reception were held on the family farm. Their honeymoon?
They spent a romantic three weeks on a wine tour in
France, of course!
In 2007, Boyden Valley Winery introduced
their premier wine label: “Vermont Ice.”
This wine is made from cold frost harvested
grapes and apples. The Vermont
Ice lineup consists of three different
products: Vermont Ice, Vermont Ice
Red, and Vermont Ice Cider. Vermont
Ice, made from the Le Crescent grape,
displays a unique balance of acidity with
undertones of apricot, green apple, and
pear. Vermont Ice Red made from the
Frontenac grape, displays a lively acid-
ity with concentrated jam flavors of blackberry,
plum, and hints of oak. The newest addition to
the premier Ice line is Vermont Ice Cider, made
from Macintosh, Northern Spy, and Empire
apples. Barrel-aged, this wine features hints of
oak and a fantastic concentrated apple flavor.
The Ice Wines are limited editions and are produced
in batches of only 300 per year. Vermont
Ice Wines make unique and special gifts for any
special occasion!
The newest innovation from the winery is a 50 ml Vermont Ice
packaged in an elegant and affordable gift
tube. Add to gift baskets for your out of
town visitors, display on your reception
table as your Vermont- made wedding favor,
or treat your bridal party to a real taste of
Vermont! A gift that your family and friends
are sure to appreciate and remember.
Boyden Valley Wines are a great addition to
your reception or rehearsal dinner. We offer
a wide variety of white and red
wines along with exquisite
dessert wines that would
compliment any wedding cake or dessert.
Visit Boyden Valley Winery online at www.boydenvalley.com,
Wedding
vermont bride FALL 2009
By Orah Moore
j
M
ost everyone has a camera and loves
taking photos of family and friends. But is
everyone a great wedding photographer?
Is it the right place to cut the wedding budget
by using friends and relatives to cover a
very special time in your life?
I have been making a living behind a camera for
over 30 years and specifically shooting weddings
for over 20 of those years. My under grad
and graduate degrees are in the field of fine art
photography. So I have placed a high premium
on seeing and creating artistic photos. Digital
image making has introduced the need for a large
degree of technical knowledge. Blending the art
and the science is now an imperative.
If you are considering having a friend or family
member act as your photographer, ask some key
questions:
• Are there backup systems for their computer
and camera equipment?
• Will the photos be raw or just .jpeg and
why?
• Is the person adept at Photoshop and
file management?
• What kinds of finish albums and coffee
table books are offered or will the photographer
just shoot and “burn?”
• Is there a specific list of photographs
that will be taken?
• What is the experience level?
• Can references be provided?
Not to say that a trusted friend or relative
wouldn’t present final photos that are tasteful
and suitable. But keep in mind, professional
photographers have knowledge and experience
that even the most well-meaning and kind-hearted
best friend can’t match.
Another area that may be harder to discern, but
really worth exploring is: Does the person you
hire to photograph your wedding have the right
balance between taking charge when needed, say
for group shots, or more intimate shots of just
the bride and groom together, and then blending
Real Vermont Brides, Real Vermont Love Stories
into the background for more photojournalistic style shots.
No one wants to have the photographer take over your party,
but I have heard stories about just such a thing.
Ask to see examples of a photographer’s work. Most
reputable photographers will have a website. Make sure you
see lots of photos. A site with just 30-40 of their best shots
won’t tell the whole story. When possible visit their studio or
home to see more work.
Much of picking the right photographer is based on
trust. You trust them to do a good job. Base that trust
on your research and you will find the right match.
Rebekah
Savard Savard
&
Brady
Callahan
Held at the beautiful Sunset Ballroom in South Burlington, VT
20
vermont bride FALL 2009
Our Love Story
May 15, 2009
HOW WE MET:
Even though Brady and I both attended the same youth group
every Sunday night, we didn’t notice each other until
two years later! One night at a youth retreat
Brady approached me and introduced himself
– from then on we were best friends.
Throughout high school we were inseparable.
I attended every one of his
basketball games at Burlington High
School and even though we both
knew how we felt about the
other, we didn’t want to pursue
those feelings until we knew
it was God’s timing. Entering
into Brady’s senior year we
began to date one evening after
we prayed together and felt the
timing couldn’t be better. The
following year Brady went off to
college in TN where both our
worlds felt like they were falling
apart, yet we held true to the
promise of God. We toughed
it out and although it was the
hardest time of our lives, God
remained faithful. To this day
Brady recalls that one night
at the youth retreat when he
approached me and telling God
“One day I will marry that girl.”
OUR ENGAGEMENT:
December 14th, 2008 will
always be engraved in my
memory as one of the happiest
days of our lives. Brady was
coming home for Christmas
break and to me it was just
another short vacation. I’d
have to soak up as much of him
as possible; to him it was the
first day of the rest of our lives
together. Brady and his parents,
William and Mia Callahan, were
Please remember to tell our advertisers that you found them in VT Bride!
planning to take us to see my favorite
basketball team, the Boston Celtics, later
that evening. Brady thought it would be
the perfect opportunity to sweep me off
my feet! I told him to come over that
morning and I could cook him breakfast
so that we were fed and ready to go to the
game. When he arrived at my parents,
Bernard and Kimberly Valley’s house, he
was acting a bit strange. I ignored the
thought and continued making pancakes,
scrambled eggs, and toast. After breakfast
we were getting ready to leave when he sat
me down on my bed and got down on one
knee. He then said, “Rebekah, you are my
best friend and I want to spend the rest
of my life with you. Bek, will you marry
me?” To this day Brady claims I just stared
at him for five minutes in shock, but I
remember looking into his eyes and saying
“YES!”
x He then said,
“Rebekah, you are
my best friend and
I want to spend the
rest of my life with
you. Bek, will you
marry me?”
Quick Quips and Helpful Tips
From Vermont Bride Magazine
• Make your own wedding favors with flower bags
filled with tulip, lily, dahlia, muscari, and gladiolus
bulbs. A wonderful reminder of your love and commitment
for your guests.
• Consider hiring a Wedding Consultant.
• Reserve venues early!
• Final dress fitting should be done 1 week prior to
the wedding.
• Avoid cash-only brokers. Be aware of scammers.
• Buy and book local whenever possible: jewelry,
flowers, formal ware, accessories, transportation,
catering services, favors, entertainment,
photographers.
• Know the 4 C’s of diamonds: carat, clarity, color,
and cut and how the 5th C, cost relates to your
diamond.
• The anticipation is often the worst part of anything:
aisle walk, speech, vows, 1st dance, being
the center of attention. Once you get started, the
stress seems to lose its power.
• Saturdays are the most expensive day for weddings!
• If you’re applying your own make-up, practice,
practice, practice, long before the wedding day to
achieve your perfect look. Enlist the help of your
bridal party.
• Double-duty flowers: Flowers used at the
ceremony can be used again at the reception.
Bouquets can be placed in vases or glasses to
line the head table. Baskets, swags, arbors, and
wreaths can be used to adorn doors and tables.
• Is the flower girl very young or shy about walking
the aisle by herself? Consider partnering her with
the ring bearer or a bridesmaid.
• Engraving has come a long way; consider special
words or symbols in lieu of the traditional date on
the inside of those shiny wedding rings.
Brady Callahan
Continued from page 21
MOST MEMORABLE DETAILS:
Half way into the reception Brady and
I walked out onto the balcony to look
back at all our guests and marvel at
God’s faithfulness. We wanted to soak
up as much of our wedding day as we
possibly could. While out on the balcony
Brady wrapped me in his arms and
danced with me. It felt as if we were the
only two people in the world and while
lost in his embrace, I recall feeling like a
true princess who had been swept off her
feet by her knight in shinning armor.
PLANNING ADVICE TO BRIDES:
~ Don’t spend too much time sweating the
little things because the day of the wedding
you don’t even notice them!
BLENDING CITY SAVVY WITH COUNTRY CHARM
WELL-SEASONED CHEF AND HOSTESS OPEN
TOURTERELLE (TURTLEDOVE) INN AND RESTAURANT
T O U R T E R E L L E
In the late nineties, a beautiful event planner from Brittany,
France met a young, American chef from New York.
Before long they were married and their union produced
first a daughter and then a culinary revolution in Brooklyn,
New York.
Locals flocked to Loulou, their first French bistro, as much for
chef William “Bill” Snell’s lusty seafood-based cuisine as Christine
Snell’s gracious charm. Before long, Loulou beget Cocotte,
another French eatery that drew crowds. Other chefs
followed,
lining the
streets near
the Snells’
restaurants
with all
manner of
eateries.
The couple
has now
turned their
sights on
a life-long
dream: to
own an inn
and restaurant
in Vermont.
The
Photography by Michael Thomas Studios
Snells have
purchased
the well-regarded Roland’s Place in New Haven, Vermont,
changing its name to Tourterelle (French for turtledove) to
reflect its romantic theme as a serene inn and wedding venue.
The Snells have launched their new venture and invite you to
share with them.
“We fell in love with the historic building (from 1796),
all the Victorian details, beautiful woodwork, and the
views of the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain Valley are
breathtaking!” says Christine.
The stately home, now painted white and freshened with
colonial blue shutters, houses a refined, 80-seat restaurant
decorated with period-appropriate antiques and a new fireplace,
three guest rooms that invite long afternoon naps and a
35’ x 80’ wooden deck where many idyllic weddings have been
held. Just 35 minutes south of Burlington and five miles from
Middlebury, Tourterelle is the ideal spot for skiing, biking,
swimming, and unparalleled antique shopping.
Visitors to Tourterelle can expect French comfort food of the
highest caliber. Bill’s cooking has garnered raves from New
York dining critics. David Kirby of the New York Times,
called the Snells’ cafe, Cocotte, “My favorite restaurant on
Fifth Avenue” (a stretch of Park Slope, Brooklyn, known for
creative eateries), and referred to Bill’s fare as “warm, wonderful,
and delicious.”
Bill, who before launching his eateries, served as executive
chef at City Wine & Cigar Company and Tribeca Grill, both in
New York City, is excited to meet local farmers and will source
their provisions for his “country French with an American
twist” menu. In the restaurant, as well as his off-premise
catering service, Bill’s seasonal, market-driven cuisine will
include dishes such as “Red Curry Coconut Bouillabaisse” (a
favorite of his Brooklyn customers), “Local Vegetable Tartiflette
with Vermont Double Cream Brie” (layers of potatoes,
bacon and cheese), and classics like “Cassoulet” (meat and
bean stew), and “Beuf Bourguignon with Steak Frites.” “I am
from Brittany,” says Christine, “home of original and traditional
crepes, so we take pride in always offering crepes on our
dinner and brunch menus.”
The Snells, who now have three children, are thrilled to
start their new lives in a place they love. “Vermont has a
magical effect on us,” Christine says. “We’re so excited
to be here.” They’re sure visitors will feel the same about
Tourterelle.
TOURTERELLE is located at 3629 Ethan Allen Highway,
New Haven, Vermont. Dinner is served Wednesday
and Thursday 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Friday
and Saturday 5:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Sunday brunch is
served 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Closed Sunday, Monday,
Bouquet
Jewels
By Pat Esden
From the ring on the bride’s finger to the ballroom’s chandeliers,
sparkle plays an important role in weddings.
An inexpensive way to add that sparkle to a wedding is by embellishing the bride and
attendants’ bouquets with jewels. This is not a new idea. For years brides have tucked
heirloom jewelry and rosaries into bouquets as their “something old.” But now, the
heirlooms are proudly displayed by tying them to the stems of a hand-tied bouquet or
by draping them through the front of cascading bouquets.
Jewelry need not be heirloom. Pins, brooches and pendants specifically made for floral
bouquets can be purchased from specialty shops. They are easy for florists to attach to
bouquets and double as a keepsake for the bride and gifts for the bridesmaids. They can
be custom engraved for an extra special touch.
...A Sparkle of Elegance
for any Wedding
Jewelry not specifically designed for bouquets can also be
used. Small prisms, shards of sparkling metal and tiny hand
blown glass bobbles add a personal touch as well as glitter. As
long as it’s small and shines, it can be considered. However, a
florist should be consulted before purchasing any item to make sure it will accent and
blend with the flowers and style of the bouquet. Also the florist will want to make sure
that attaching the sparkle to a bouquet is physically possible.
Sparkle is available directly from florists. Without significantly raising the cost of the
bouquets, the florist can stud roses with rhinestones or pearls. Inexpensive crystals may
be tucked between the bouquets’ blooms to provide a subtle glint and add an extra
touch of coordination between the gowns and flowers. Strings of pearls can be used
as cuffs on the satin wrap of hand- held bouquets. Likewise, pearls can stud the entire
wrap for an Elizabethan look. The ideas are limited only by the florist’s creativity and
the wedding’s style.
Whether heirloom or new, the key to adding sparkle to a wedding bouquet is to make
sure it coordinates with the jewelry the bride and attendants plan to wear as well as with
the veil and any hair accessories. Coordinating is usually easy, since faux jewels come in
a rainbow of colors and styles.
Please remember to tell our advertisers that you found them in VT Bride!
Photo by Great Impressions Portrait Studio
In addition to coordination with the bride and attendants,
touches of the same type of jewel can be used in other wedding
flowers to unify the wedding look. The boutonnières
could have a fleck of glittered baby’s breath or a crystal
studded pin that matches the bride and attendants’ bouquets.
The mothers’ corsages might be attached to jewel or
pearl bracelets that accent their dresses.
But be sure not to overdo—sparkle taken to
an extreme can look tacky.
Here is where the bride and groom’s taste and the florist’s
experience can work together to provide the right touch of
glitz without going too far.
Pat Esden: Pat has worked in the wedding industry for
over twenty-five years. As a master floral designer and
owner of Esden Florist in Fairfield, Vermont, she sees the
yearly changes in wedding styles and is familiar with the
time-honored traditions and in tune with the new conventions.
Boutonnières should compliment the flowers
of the women in the bridal party
We can thank the French for the word boutonnière. In days past a single flower
was worn pushed through the buttonhole on a gentleman’s left lapel; today, we pin.
Boutonnières can be as simple or elaborate as imagination will allow and are worn
to signify people of important and the formality of the occasion. We all know the
classic red rose with baby’s breath – always sexy against a stark black tuxedo jacket.
Modern floral wearables often fashion natural materials of herbs, foliage, berries,
and grasses. Add a thin wire wrapped around the stem and commonplace quickly
becomes a head-turner. Often pieces of extra fabric or beading from the wedding
dress will be incorporated into the #1 boutonnière as a way to join to the #1 bouquet.
Boutonnières should
compliment the flowers
of the women in the
bridal party: groom to
bride and groomsmen
to bridesmaids. The
groom should wear a
flower of distinction
whether it is a different
variety, color, or style
to allow the spotlight
shine upon him. A
general rule to follow
is to have the central
flower no larger than a
medium-headed rose
or golf ball. However,
if the groom is the size
of NFL linemen, the
florist should take that
fact into consideration
and make the flower fit
the physical. A sweetheart
rose bout will be
charming worn by a
young ring bearer while
the other gentleman
may sport a larger rose.
Continued from page 35
Floral designs,
whether bouquets,
corsages, or boutonnieres
should
always be in scale
to the lucky carriers.
The flowers
needn’t overpower,
but compliment
and flatter.
Who gets boutonnières?
Besides
the groom and his
men, the ushers,
fathers. Although
not mandatory, grandfathers and brothers not in the wedding
party would appreciate a splash of color as would individuals
contributing to the day including readers, singers, musicians,
and possibility the officiant (if not wearing a robe). If the
groom’s fraternity brothers fly in from all areas of the country
to attend the wedding, that’s a big deal and they will be
thankful for a boutonnière – this is the call of the couple. If
an esteemed person is absent from the wedding, he or she
may be honored with a hand-tied bouquet or by having an
inscribed vase filled with favorite flowers placed at a prominent
location at the ceremony and moved to the head table at
reception. If your beloved is a military man and wearing his
uniform, he is off the flower hook. It is against protocol to
have anything attached to a uniform that wasn’t supplied by
the military.
Delivery time should be predetermined with your florist
and coordinated with where the men are dressing.
Specially treated to stay fresh and vibrant as long as possible,
keep these and all flowers in a cool place and out of sunlight
and request that each container be labeled with first and last
names. We wouldn’t want Uncle John wearing Brother Bob’s.
Be sure to have the camera at the ready as pinning to lapels is
a photo opportunity not to be missed.
Almost any flower can be used for this symbol of honor
with favorites being roses, calla lilies, gardenias, orchids, and
stephanotis. Accessories include foliage, pearl strands, feathers,
ribbon, wire, and crystals. Boutonnieres do not need to
be the same as Fred Astaire and Cary Grant graced us with
in the ’40s. Truly mini masterpieces, these blooms are as significant
as the ladies’ bouquets and should reflect the unique
personalities and tastes of the couple.
We have all been to a wedding or two. We have
seen friends, relatives, strangers engage in
wedding stunts that can become embarrassing,
Traditions
– Tasteful or Tacky?
Sure, there are times when the stunned woman who
catches the bouquet has been summoned to the
dance floor by the droning dj to perform the whole
garter stunt and ended up falling madly in love with
the young man who caught the garter. In this particular
instance, they remain happily married with two beautiful
children. You just never know!
However, now that you are planning your own wedding it is
for you to decide if those customary acts will be part of your
celebration. Are there other customs or traditions you will
use to signify your own union and celebration. Will these
customs carry on in your family or have they already?
Some of the traditions listed below have been handed down
through the years from culture to culture. Some are pure
folklore and many stem from superstitions. Certain traditions
are widely used in modern wedding ceremonies while
others exist only within a certain race or culture.
The Engagement Ring: said to symbolize the
promise of a future together; sealed with
giving and accepting.
The diamond engagement ring has been around since the
early 1400’s and first found in medieval Italy. In earlier times,
the engagement or betrothal ring was a partial payment for
the bride and a pledge of the groom’s intentions. Historically,
men have chosen not to wear wedding rings; it was not until
the sixteenth century that they became fashionable. During
World War II, the idea of the double ring ceremony became
popular as a link for the young couples before they were sent
overseas.
Is it fortune or misfortune in the rings stone? Each stone signified
with the month of the year is said to hold good or bad
tidings for the bride. The bride who wears an engagement
ring with her true birthstone is said to be the luckiest of all.
Choosing a wedding day: superstitions abound as you decide
which date to set. Many cultures have beliefs pertaining to
the full moon or various phases of the moon and harvest
seasons. In England, the groom’s birthday is an especially
lucky day to marry. April is said to be hallowed by the Roman
goddess of love, Venus. Many of the superstitions surround
fertility and the couple’s ability to raise a loving family. If
snow falls in December, the couple is sure to have a happy
marriage. A good choice then for us here in Vermont!
Bridal Showers: this event has roots dating back to Holland. When a father’s
bride did not approve of the groom to be, he would not provide the necessary
dowry. The bride’s friends would “shower” her with gifts so that she would have
a dowry and still marry the man of her choice. Even with dowries long gone,
the practice of giving gifts still remains. Showers often remain a surprise to the
bride, who can surely expect good natured fun and games. As gifts are opened,
folklore has it that for each broken ribbon or pot holder received; a baby will
be welcomed to the new couple. Often times, the ribbons are collected as a
bouquet to be used during the rehearsal or the ribbons are placed in the brides
pillow case for continual good luck. Bridal showers have become
a way to strengthen the friendships between the bride and
her friends; giving moral support and helping to prepare for the
marriage.
Throwing the Garter: a ritual dating back to before a woman
wore panty hose with a garter belt. It was a chance for the single
men to share in the good fortune of the groom. Today, it is
believed that the man who catches the garter when it is thrown
will be the next to marry. In the 14th century, it was customary
for the bride to toss her garter to the men, but sometimes the
men got too drunk and would become impatient. They would
try to take the garter from the bride ahead of time so the bride
would toss it and run away.
The Dollar Dance: a tradition which began in Poland, Hawaii
and the Philippines. Guests had to pay to enjoy a dance with the
bride or groom. The guests would pin dollar bills to the bride
and grooms clothes or place it in a special pouch being worn by
the bride and groom.
Tossing the Bouquet: this tradition hails from English roots
and is believed that the bride could pass along good fortune to
others. In order to obtain good fortune, spectators would try to
tear away pieces of the brides clothing or flowers. In an attempt
to escape, the bride would toss her bouquet into the crowd.
Tradition says the woman who catches the bouquet is the one to
receive the bride’s good fortune and the next to marry.
Good Fortune: there is an old Scottish belief where a bride shall
be met at the door after the wedding ceremony by her mother.
Her mother then breaks a currant bun over her daughter’s head
to symbolize her daughter’s future good fortune.
Saw horsing: an ancient Italian tradition when the people in the
village would set up a saw
horse, a log, and a double
handled saw. The newlyweds
must saw the log
apart with prompting and
cheering from the crowd.
When the job is finished
and the log cut, it would
symbolize the couple’s
ability to work together in
all of life’s future tasks.
Toasting: an ancient
French custom of placing
bread in the bottom
of a glass – a good toaster
drained the drink to get
to the “toast.” According
to legend, when a bride
Please remember to tell our advertisers that you found them in VT Bride!
and groom drank their wedding toast, whoever finished first
would then rule the family.
Bachelor Party: the last chance before the wife took over
the finances for the groom to gather his friends and gamble
for his own future use. Ancient Spartan soldiers were the
first to hold stag parties. The groom would feast with his
male friends the night before the wedding. There he would
say good bye to his carefree days of bachelorhood and swear
continued allegiance to his comrades. This was typically
seen as the raucous party for the groom before he was to
settle down with his new wife.
The wedding is one of life’s primeval and surprisingly
unchanged rites of passage. There are so many different
customs, superstitions and cultural beliefs that have carried
on through the ages. That some of these barbaric rituals
have not changed is unfortunate. Nearly all of the customs
we observe today are merely echoes from the past. Do they
need to be? What are the actual ties that bind so deeply the
need for garter removal or dollar dancing?
Old world marriage customs continue to thrive today, in
diluted, disguised and often upgraded forms. Take time to
reflect upon some of these wedding customs and traditions.
Do they reflect you as a woman; do they reflect you both as
a couple forming a partnership? New traditions or variations
which reflect your style will continue the slight altering
of these named customary wedding rites of passage
Today, although the original understanding has been lost, we
attempt to incorporate old world customs into our weddings.
We feel these are the rituals and traditions from the
past which should be honored. Have these rituals been altered
over time to no longer reflect the true meaning behind
them? As you plan your wedding, take note of the single
men or single women attending. Is there a point to throwing
the bouquet or
tossing the garter?
Creatively come up
with something to
replace these traditions
of which you
do not feel strongly
about or just don’t
blend in with your
celebration. Instead
of singling out the
unattached men
and women, invite
everyone to the
dance floor. Have a
slow dance contest
in which couples are
eliminated for the
HOW WE MET:
Our meeting was somewhat unconventional. Matt and I
met at a gay bar in Vancouver’s West End where they have
a ‘straight’ night on Fridays. After a number of furtive
glances across the room, he introduced himself to me at
the end of a night saying “I have to leave, but I wanted
you to know that you are the prettiest girl in here.” I said
thanks and gave him my phone number.
A few weeks later we met at a Herbalizer concert that we
happened to have tickets for, discovered that we played
ultimate Frisbee in the same league, and had several
friends in common. It was amazing that we hadn’t met
earlier.
On our first date we went mountain biking, ate sushi,
took a walk around the Stanley Park seawall (where we
had our first kiss), and drank milkshakes at Hamburger
Mary’s - places and pastimes that continue to be some of
our favorites.
OUR ENGAGEMENT:
Matt and I regularly go on ‘date nights,’ and one day in
early September Matt asked me out on a date. On one of
those autumn evenings that
still feel like summer, we
set off on our cruiser bikes
down to the beach for dinner
at a very nice restaurant
in Stanley Park. After
dinner we rode through the
park, arriving back at the
bench where we had our
very first kiss. We sat on the
bench for awhile admiring
the sunset over the water
and then before I knew it,
Matt was down on one knee
asking me to marry him.
After I said yes, we got back
on our bikes for what I
thought was the ride home
but Matt had arranged for
us to spend the night at a
beautiful hotel overlooking
the water. The next morning
on our way home, my
bike basket was filled with
roses and we stopped for
breakfast at our favorite
place, Hamburger Mary’s.
MOST MEMORABLE DETAILS:
When planning on a place to have our wedding, we
both immediately thought of Matt’s parents’ home
in St. Albans. Matt has so many memories of summers
at the lake with his family; it’s probably his
favorite place in the world. The first time I visited
St. Albans I knew instantly why he loved it so much;
it’s a beautiful place where sunsets last for hours and
thunderstorms roll across the lake in a matter of
minutes and a person can easily lose track of time
swinging in a hammock with a good book.
x
Keeping the wedding informal,
fun, and welcoming were
important for Matt and me.
We wanted to focus on the
importance of close family and
friends and the beginning of our
future together.
We tried not to get too caught up in the details
which was challenging at times. The weekend began
with a rehearsal dinner for both of our families on
Friday evening. We spent Saturday boating, swimming,
and barbequing at the lake. Sunday was the
big day!
The wedding combined both of our families’ values,
traditions, and cultures. We really could not
have had a wedding as beautiful and fun as we did
without an enormous amount of support from our
parents.
sister admonished her
Questions and Answers about
Wedding Etiquette, Solutions
and Help from the Etiquette
Experts at Vermont Bride
Q. With so many bridesmaids’ dresses I don’t know
where to start. Do they all have to be the same?
- Beth, (Williston, VT)
A. This is your wedding and your preferences. We’ve
seen weddings where each bridesmaid wore a different
style and color. There is no rule that states each
dress needs to be the same. A few options would be
for each dress to be in the same fabric and color but
different in style. One may have spaghetti straps; another,
no straps, the third may have an empire waist.
The others dresses may have variations on hems or
bust lines. Think of the wedding party in terms of
photographs: as long as each dress is compatible and
everybody looks like they belong in the same wedding,
you’re safe. Another option would be to keep
all the women in the same style but different colors.
One wedding we were a part of saw the bridesmaids
sporting satin dresses (all A-line style) each in a different
color of brilliant orange, blue, green, and yellow
– absolutely stunning for a lakeside summer wedding!
Q. Is it appropriate and required to tip my vendors?
- Nicole, (Bristol, VT)
A. Gratuities are tokens of appreciation for extraordinary
service. We have all experienced poor customer care
and when we receive exception service, we remember
and it should be rewarded. Most contracts have gratuities
included in the final price and you are not obligated
to tip over that agreement. However, if a vendor
goes above and beyond with extras, an additional tip
would be appreciated. We know of two florists who
lent a hand at a reception to help the caterers set
up, decorated the cake with
flowers, placed all the floral
arrangements, hung and
secured the wreaths and
swags, and
54
vermont bride FALL 2009
surprised the couple with an unexpected, beautiful floral arrangement on the gift
table. In this particular instance, the service and setup was not part of the contract
and the extra time taken was considered above and beyond customary. The bride
and groom were aware of this and in their generously mailed a considerable gratuity
with a heartfelt note upon return from their honeymoon. If you do experience
outstanding service, consider tipping an amount of up to 15% of the total contract.
Q. We have a guest list of almost 175 people. What’s the average invite vs. attend
ratio? Should we invite more than our ideal number?
- Kara, (Richmond, VT)
A. When the reply cards are sent back, most people have every intention of attending
a celebration. Lots can, and usually does, happen between mailing back the reply
and the day of the wedding. A general rule is: if inviting over 200 people, expect
between 25 – 30 percent not to attend. If the guest list is under 200 people, expect
between 15 – 20 percent not to show. The percentage is lower with smaller
guest lists as it often includes more relatives and close friends as opposed to coworkers
and distant relatives.
Q. My fiancé and I would like something different than the traditional wedding
cake. What are alternatives?
-Melissa, (South Burlington, VT)
A. Think cupcake towers, strawberry cheesecake, chocolate truffles, or a fondue
fountain with fresh fruits. Image the waitstaff serving chilled champagne glasses
filled with layers chocolate and white chocolate mousse. Raspberry tiramisu, baklava
and caramel flan make excellent alternatives to the traditional. Your caterer
will be able to suggest yummy and affordable options. If you both love ice-cream,
why not arrange ‘make your own sundae’ station?
Whatever your choice, keep the tradition of sharing in the dessert for all to see
(and photo). The practice of cake cutting is a symbol of unity and can be done
whether key lime pie or chocolate dipped strawberries. Dig in!
Remember the end of summer just before 5th grade and Mom took you shopping
for new school clothes?
Every pair of pants fit on the first try, blouses draped just right, and that cute Sailor-style dress hung
just above the knee – no tailoring needed. Shopping for clothing was a pleasure, a breeze. When’s the
last time you tried on a pair of jeans that fit so perfectly that you didn’t feel the urge to flee screaming
from the dressing room?
Wedding dress shopping doesn’t need to be a test in tolerance.
Becoming aware of your specific body type and knowing that certain designs styles will compliment
you will turn frustrating into fantastic.
Rule #1: Know your body type
We may want to look like super-model Gisele Bundchen, but let’s face facts, we probably don’t and no
matter how many hours we spend on the Stairmaster, we won’t. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes
and most of our figures fit in one of the following categories: Full-Figure, Bottom-Heavy, Pear-Shaped,
Apple-Shaped, Petite, or Hourglass. Finding your body type is discovering the key that unlocks fashion
challenges.
Rule #2: Choose the correct style dress
Based on body types, there are styles of dress to flatter and suit every woman. Gisele may look stunning
in a Mermaid style, but the rest of womankind may find an A-Line or Empire more complimenting
and comfortable. The A-Line, Empire, Mermaid, Column (Sheath), and Ball Gown are the most
popular and many dresses are variations from these classics.
Full-Figured
For the full-figured bride the classic A-Line will flatter giving an illusion of length as attention is drawn
away from an ample waistline. Empire conceals less than perfect waist to hip ratios. Skin is sexy;
showing arms and necklines can make women appear slimmer. Curvaceous figures are complimented
with deep V and scoop necks. Large busted
women will find off the shoulder styles draw
attention upward emphasizing shoulders while
minimizing the chest. Wide, set apart straps will
diminish fuller-busted figures. If opting for a
solid fabric, 3/4 length or long sleeves will elongate
the line of the arm.
Bottom Heavy
We all have cutsie names for that part of our
anatomy: caboose, fanny, bottom, tush. For
those of us who haven’t lost those last 10
pounds, there are dresses to emphasis our more
flattering features. Choose a dress that highlight
arms, bust line, and back. An A-Line and Empire
are safe bets. Avoid extra fabric, pleats, and
gathers around the waist. Consider a corset (a
secret weapon) with lacing which will highlight
the upper body. The key to successful dressing
(formal and informal) is keeping the clothing
proportionate to the body. Stay away from Ball
Gowns as extra skirt fabric will bring the eye
south when you want all eyes north.
Pear-Shaped
Most women fall into this category and will find
success with A-Lines and Empire. Ball Gowns
can be a good choice if the fullness of the skirt is limited
opting instead for a flat front. Sexy necklines, off the
shoulder or strapless dresses draw attention to the upper
body, minimizing the bottom. A Bolero jacket can help
even top to bottom ratio. Avoid Mermaid or Column
(Sheath).
Apple-Shaped
A-Line scores first, along with Empire, and V-necks, scoop
necks and plunging necklines. Avoid Ball Gowns which
will add unneeded fabric and bulk and any form that
will add width using ruffles or tiered skirts. The key is to
find dressing that will bring both body halves in proportion.
Details draw attention. If you are busty and want
to minimize, leave the detail for the hem only. Be sure the
patterns (lace motif, appliqués, embroidery or attached rosettes)
are scaled to your size. If the patterns are too small,
the entire ratio of dress to body will seem out of scale. On
the other hand, properly scaled details will make the dress
appear that it was custom made for you!
Petite
Steer clear of Ball Gowns, dropped waists, high collars,
overwhelming necklines and Mermaid. Best success will
be found with Empire and A-Line (keeping the flair minimal).
Column (Sheath) is another choice if the bride has
a balanced figure. Clean, unbroken lines without excess fabric
will lengthen the body. Look for dresses with vertical lines (the
secret to elongating). Avoid long trains as the length will tend to
overwhelm your height.
Hourglass
Whether by birthright or by gym, this body has her pick of any
design dress. Also consider two pieces and corset dresses. The
bust line can be showcased by wearing Ball Gowns and corseted
bodices. Look for dresses that showcase the tiny waist.
Very soon all eyes will be upon you. Don’t be nervous; be prepared
with a wedding dress that will knock the socks off your
guests and your groom! Professionals in bridal shops are able to
discern what style will work best for you and gently direct you
to selections. From chiffon and crepe to silk and satin, wedding
attire is an once-in-a-lifetime decision that shouldn’t be made in
haste. Begin searching early, do your research, and know your
body type. A bit of organization and preparation will be of great
benefit in the pursuit for your perfect wedding dress.
The Dresses
The A-Line: Timeless & Elegant
A sure winner for most every woman. With a fitted bodice,
60
vermont bride FALL 2009
the fabric flows gracefully giving that bridal ‘swish’ without
clinging to hips or thighs. Drawing attention away from the
waistline and lengthening the body while disguising fuller hips
is its claim to fame. The A-Line gives a slimming look without
excessive fabric or losing the full-skirt look of traditional bridal
dressing.
The Empire: Enchanting & Ethereal
This dress is similar to the A-Line with a raised waistline that
sits just below the bust. Needing to conceal a less than perfect
hip to waist ratio and smooth a middle? This could be the style
for you. Be aware if you are a tall bride, as this may make you
look ‘tent-like.’ For brides with smaller busts, the Empire draws
attention to the neckline, thus creating definition. Beading and
accents can highlight the chest area and create an illusion of a
fuller bust.
The Mermaid: Glamorous & Dramatic
For the curvaceous bride, this dress features contouring to the
body from the chest to the knee then flaring out to the hem.
The flair can be above, at, or just below the knee; each creating
a different silhouette. This choice accentuates a sexy figure and
shows every curve. Perfect for the fashion-forward hourglass-
Indulge and Rejuvenate Before Your Wedding
(un) Tie the Knots
Do you feel that knot in your shoulder the size of Mt. Vesuvius?
Do you need to unravel from tension and pressure?
Massage is one of the best ways to de-stress, rejuvenate and
give your mind and body a chance to relax. Massage is an
important part of a wellness inspired lifestyle.
It can be baffling to know which massage will suit you best.
Here is a quick guide to differentiate the massages when you
browse thru the spa menu.
Swedish
A traditional full body massage with firm,
but gentle pressure. Swedish massage
focuses on long flowing strokes and muscle
kneading. Most spas offer this classic massage.
Hot Stone Massage
Hot stones are used to further relax and
loosen your muscles. The basalt stones are
black volcanic rock that are smooth and
absorb and retain heat. Your therapist holds
the warmed stones in her hands as your
muscles are heated and lengthened. Muscles
release more quickly when stones are used in combination
with Swedish techniques.
Aromatherapy Massage
Essential oils are used to heighten the senses. Traditionally, a
therapist will take you on a “smell journey” and present a spectrum
of aromas that you like. Some oils are stimulating, while
others are calming. You can decide where you
want to go in your massage. Pick a citrus
scent for a tropical escape, or sandalwood for
an earthy feel.
Deep Tissue or Sports Massage
This massage style focuses on deeper pressure
to targeted tissue for restorative benefits.
Frequent areas of concentration are neck
and shoulders, low back, and hamstrings.
Stretches are often incorporated to further
elongate the muscles. Hot towels and heated
tables also encourage more blood and lymph
flow in and out of the area to rehabilitate the
muscles. Athletes prefer this massage as the
goal is to reduce pain and enhance performance.
Couples Massage
A great pre-wedding or post wedding massage for the bride
and groom. Many spas have couples suites where two
tables are set up side-by -side and each of you will have a
massage therapist performing a massage of your choice.
One of our favorites is a side-by-side Warm Stone Massage
with champagne after in the relaxation room.
coordinated Swedish style massage. It is a decadent massage
that you will be talking about for years.
Whatever massage you choose, here are a few practical tips
to get the most out of your massage:
q Be sure to give yourself enough time before and after
your massage to relax and enjoy the entire experience.
q Talk to your therapist. They will want to know the
areas that are bothering you and your massage preferences.
You can always talk to your therapist during a
massage and request pressure changes.
q Relax and clear your mind. The hour you are in the
massage has been reserved for you and it is your time.
q Leave cell phones in your locker or in your car.
q Undress to your comfort level. You will be properly
draped during your massage, so removing all your clothes
for a massage is the preferred option.
q If you have scheduled a Swedish style massage, but decide
you want to change it to an Aromatherapy massage, ask.
Most spas can accommodate a menu change.
q If it is your first time having a massage ever, let your
therapist know. You will receive more explanations and
will be asked more often about your comfort level.
q Drink water after your massage. A massage releases waste
products into your system and drinking water will encourage
them to leave your body.
Signs of the Zodiac
Fact, Fiction, or Fun?
By Karen Sturtevant
In this issue of Vermont Bride’s “Signs of the Zodiac” featured are
the astrological signs of Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Capricorn. Believer
or cynic, reading attributes of the Zodiac is entertaining and a
great appetizer for conversation.
Scorpio (The Scorpion)
October 24 – November 22*
The Scorpio is most extreme and dominant sign of the Zodiac.
Known for deep emotional energy, the Scorpio parallels that of a
dormant volcano that could turn active anytime. A partner with a
unique personality is required to tango with the Scorpio. Fiercely
independent, passionate, determined as a bulldog, and dynamic,
keeping in step with this dynamo requires understanding in what
makes this forceful persona tick. Scorpios accomplish their goals,
are deeply sensitive, influenced by their emotion, and have a strong
propensity for likes and dislikes. Gray areas don’t exist: only black
and white. Incredibly intelligent and imaginative, Scorpios make
adept investigators and thrive in an analytical capacity. With an
inner circle of few, this talent will treat his colleagues with respect,
loyalty, and generosity as long as no reason is given to suggest the
trust is misplaced as jealousy and resentment is on constant trial.
Scorpio relishes in the truth, loves being involved for the cause
(sometimes obsessively), using the powers of persuasion, and
believes he is responsible for his own destiny. The need for being
in constant control translates into a sense of security.
This strong character is complemented with the qualities of Cancer,
Virgo, other Scorpios, Capricorns, and Pieces. Some famous-faced
Scorpios you may have heard of: Pablo Picasso, Jamie Lee Curtis,
Bonnie Raitt, Bill Gates, Kurt Vonnegut, and Goldie Hawn.
Right Body - Right Dress
shaped bride, this dress is ideal for women whose height is
between 5’ 7” – 5’ 9.”
The Column (Sheath): Streamlined, Modern, & Chic!
This close cut design is more revealing that the traditional wedding
dress as its narrow shapes flows straight from the neckline
to hem. Body-hugging, this dress is not for the wallflower.
Modification on the neck and waistlines can be tailored to accentuate
best features whiling hiding others. Strapless creates
an elegant look while long bell sleeves give a more whimsy feel.
The Ball Gown: Romantic & Feminine
Think princess and Cinderella. This dress features a fitted bodice
with a full shirt. This style is ideal for concealing the lower
body and accentuating a waistline. As with other styles, the Ball
Gown can be modified with changes to neck and waistlines.
Add opera length gloves for drama or a scooped neck bodice for
added sophistication.
Sagittarius (The Archer)
November 23 – December 22*
We all know them – those ‘glass half-full’ folks: filled with optimism,
good humor, and straight forward thinking. These are members of
the Sagittarius club. These quick thinkers are the first to tackle a new
project and have an innate yearning to understand new concepts.
They appreciate the laws of the land and will engage in intellectual,
philosophical conversations to acquire a scope of the big picture before
making a final decision. Possessing a love (and almost primal need)
for travel and adventure, the Sagittarius needs this outlet to feed his
broad-minded, restless nature. Not to say that a Sagittarius can’t stay
in one place long enough to be domestic-loving, faithful partner. Quite
the opposite: Sagittarius members tend to be devoted spouses and
indulgent parents when finding a balance of residence and exploration.
When something doesn’t sit well, a quick temper may flair but is gone
as fast as it appeared. On the list of challenges: being blindly optimistic
and irresponsible, restless and tactless, and holding a scorn for routine
tasks.
This spirit finds contentment with Aires, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Aquarius,
and other club Sagittarius.’ Ludwig van Beethoven, Walt Disney, Emily
Dickinson, Steven Spielberg, and Brad Pitt are life-long, card carrying
Sagittarius members.
Capricorn (“Great-horned” – The Seagoat)
December 23 – January 20*
The Capricorn: the most serious and most stable of the Zodiac. Remember
the honor student who sat in the first row of Algebra class?
He knew all the answers, was the first to finish tests, and went on to
MIT? Changes are he’s a Capricorn: practical, disciplined, extremely
cautious, reserved, and ambitious. These strong-willed individuals
are the backbone of the company, put their family before their own
needs, and are amazing multitaskers. Valuing tradition over innovation,
they are deep thinkers and will explore all possibilities before
arriving at a safe conclusion. Because of their profound outlook,
melancholy can creep in while pessimism rears its ugly head. Many
Capricorns are inhibited introverts and prefer to keep to themselves.
When the heart is shared, Capricorns are exceptionally faithful and
most remain happily married for life. Farfetched schemes and unrealistic
views are not for the Cap; he prefers practically and reliability.
The resourceful Capricorn finds successful love with Taurus, Scorpio,
Virgo, other Capricorns, and Pieces. Purposeful Capricorns include
Tiger Woods, Elvis Presley, Kevin Costner, Kirstie Alley, and Joan of
Arc.
Believers subscribe to the conviction that specific sun sign personalities
are better suited to some rather than to others. Libra finds
love with Sagittarius. Pieces find peace with Scorpio. Will Leo learn
to love Capricorn? Aquarius in agreement with Cancer? Love is a
powerful emotion and materializes in numerous forms. As in nature,
love is perfect in its imperfection. The galaxy has written its own
chapters on love. Write your own book and use the index as a guide
only. Regardless of the sign’s representation, let your commitment
for one another break the rules and compose your own chapters
through life’s volumes as husband and wife.
vermont bride FALL 2009
C O M M E N TA RY
By Karen Sturtevant
I sincerely believe that marriage is the ultimate
commitment, the definitive duet between two
people. Whether heterosexual or same sex,
it makes no matter. Love is love. Our world
is full of heartache, tragedy, and unexpected
crises. Having another person to share your
most private thoughts and views is not a given
right, it’s a privilege. Coming home to a significant
other and knowing safety and peace are
concessions that we strive and yearn for from
our deepest core. This is the person we think
of first and want to share with when that job
promotion is offered, when good news is given,
and when sorrow comes our way. The world is
built for two; a sincere commitment between
individuals makes the path less rocky, the sky
bluer, and the fragrance of wildflowers sweeter.
Making the commitment is a monumental
choice; one of the most important in a person’s
life and should be entered into only after
meaningful consideration and contemplation
has been explored. People in their 20s are
fundamentally and behaviorally different than
they will be in their 30s; same scenario with
the decade from 30 to 40. As we age, we grow
(or should) into our maturity. Don’t sweat the
small stuff becomes our mantra and things
that seem so important 5 years ago, we don’t
give a passing thought to anymore. It’s as if
our brains and bodies have finally come to a
counterbalance to where we know who we are
and accept it, know what we want and have a
clear direction on how to get there. Plans are
concrete and goals are met with jubilation and
celebration. We’re bolder, smarter, and proud of
the person we know we were meant to be. We
see ourselves in our parents and our grandparents
and wonder “Why didn’t I think of that
sooner?” That’s a great idea!
The ‘ah ha’ moments of wisdom come in
time and only with experience and personal
development. Learn something new every day:
personally, professional, spiritually, emotionally,
physically, and globally. Step out of your
comfort zone. You’ll be a better, more rounded
person because of it.
Few times are as delightful as your first love:
new and exciting. Kisses were sweet, handholding
caused your heart to skip, and your
biggest challenge was what to wear on the
The ‘ah ha’ moments of wisdom come in time and only
with experience and personal development.
Saturday night date. Teenage ‘love’ is usually
uncomplicated and gives us building blocks for
adult relationships.
According to www.dictionary.com, Love is
defined as:
A profoundly tender, passionate affection
for another person.
A feeling of warm personal attachment or
deep affection.
Sexual passion or desire.
In layman’s terms, your marriage partner
should be one you like, love, and desire; your
best friend, sounding board, and be trusted
with your most personal wishes and needs.
The next time you’re among a crowd, look for
the couple that has had their ‘ah ha’ moments
and grown together. She will lovingly adjust the
collar of his jacket and he will take her hand as
they stroll. The twinkle still shines in their eyes
– this is the goal of every married couple: to
keep the like, love, and passion alive year after
year, decade after decade. Indeed, a noble
ambition.
Reliable statics report between a 41 – 50
percent divorce rate for first marriages; 60 – 67
percent for second marriages, and 73 – 74 percent
for third marriages. These are scary stats.
Watch Dr. Phil, read Dr. Ruth, listen to Oprah
– you will arrive at one similar conclusion: If
there is any doubt, wait. Be 110 percent certain
that you are willing to commit to and work with
this particular person rather than enter into this
life-long role half-hearted. There are no coincidences.
You two have been brought together
for a reason: life partner, life friend, lessons to
learn. Love is hard to find and if you are both
willing to make the commitment to cultivate,
make the promised pledge, and work at it every
day. Put your marriage on Priority One status.
Becoming complacent could prove fatal.
Do your utmost to become that elderly couple
strolling down Church Street on a breezy
autumn afternoon. One hand will be holding
your purse with pictures of Grandchildren while
the other tenderly adjusts the collar of your
husband’s fall jacket.
• Make your own wedding favors with flower bags filled
with tulip, lily, dahlia, muscari, and gladiolus bulbs. A
wonderful reminder of your love and commitment for your
guests.
• Don’t be afraid to ask for help from friends, close
co-workers, and family. Wedding planning is monumental.
Your inner circle will want to help and hearing other
opinions can be refreshing.
• Consider boutonnières or corsages for readers,
photographers, Master of Ceremonies, band/DJ, and
videographers. Although not required, the thought will be
appreciated.
• Wearing a strapless dress? Remember this when your
at the beach or sunbathing and the top has straps! Think
strapless!
• Floating candles in a variety of glassware creates interesting
visual beauty without breaking the budget.
• Attend tastings and keep in mind that presentation is as
important as flavor.
• Personalize bouquets with extra fabric from dresses
wrapped around stems.
• Ask to see portfolios of vendor’s work.
• If your reception is outside, make sure to have a Plan B
in case of inclement weather.
• Incorporate the season with your wedding: use acorns,
maple leaves, gourds and pumpkins as decoration in the
autumn. For summer: potted plants and herbs, fresh fruits
and vegetables, and anything beach.
Your Wedding Your Way
Happily Ever After Part 2
by Michael Caldwell, Partnership Center of Vermont
In the last issue, in the story of Alex and Susanna, Alex
confronted his urge to stray from his marriage vows. When the
honeymoon was over only about a year after their marriage,
he took himself to the pastor’s office to deal with it. The short
story: he realized where his urges were coming from and righted
himself in the nick of time. His only question was
whether and how to talk to Susanna about it…
Alex went back again to the pastor who had
married him and Susanna. He was torn about
talking with her about his “stuff.” If he did,
she might over-react. If he didn’t, the secret
seemed like it might remain and fester. He
laid out his ambivalence in the office.
“I feel damned if I do and damned if I
don’t… talk to her. I can’t decide.”
“What would be good in it for Susanna?”
“I’m not sure it would do any good.
Short term, she’d be furious. She might
eventually appreciate my honesty, especially
since nothing happened, but I’m not sure it’s
worth the risk.”
“Didn’t she have some issues, before you
were married, with staying faithful in her last
relationship? How do you know she doesn’t struggle
too?”
“I don’t, but that’s true; I might not be alone in this. That could
be key. Maybe if we came in here together… maybe that would
give me the courage to talk about it with her.”
Alex called Susanna from the office to set up the appointment,
to address it right away. She was surprised and apprehensive,
but agreed to the meeting. When the time came, they sat down
together on the couch. The pastor reminded them that all
couples have ups and downs and thanked them for being willing
to come in. Then, he asked Alex to share with Susanna directly
what had precipitated the meeting. He’d coached him enough so
that he relaxed into his sadness about his hiding his urges from
her. From that place of grief, he was able to tell her about his
struggle. Susanna listened, wincing. She took deep breaths as he
spoke, looking him in the eye.
When he finished, she spoke.
“Is it me?” She clearly needed some reassurance.
“It’s not at all about you, love. I love you as much – no more, now
– than I ever did. It’s from the compulsiveness that ruined
things before for me. This time, I caught it before it
went too far.”
“Are you sure? How can you be sure?”
“I’ve never talked about it before. Somehow
the talking gets me beyond it. If we’re tight
and talking, it doesn’t need to be an issue.”
“Maybe I might need to talk too.”
“Huh?”
Rev. Dr. Michael Caldwell
(whose parishioners call “Rev
Michael”) runs the Partnership
Center of Vermont (www.
coachingcenterofvt.com) from his
home in North Wolcott, VT.
Along with his ministry in
New England’s Congregational
tradition, he coaches couples
preparing for marriage, and
officiates ceremonies all over
Vermont, indoors or outside.
“Maybe you’re not the only one that needs
to talk about stuff like this…”
Alex smiled. Somehow he knew things
would be okay now, if they could just keep
talking.
