In <strong>the</strong> days of supply cha<strong>in</strong>s without <strong>RFID</strong> technology, SCM, <strong>Supply</strong> Cha<strong>in</strong><br />
Plann<strong>in</strong>g (SCP), <strong>Supply</strong> Cha<strong>in</strong> Execution (SEM), and <strong>Supply</strong> Cha<strong>in</strong> Optimization<br />
(SCO) were discussed and debated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g global network of supply<br />
cha<strong>in</strong>s. Also discussed and debated were <strong>Supply</strong> Cha<strong>in</strong> Visibility (SCV),<br />
<strong>Supply</strong> Cha<strong>in</strong> Process Management (SCPM), <strong>Supply</strong> Cha<strong>in</strong> Event Management<br />
(SCEM), and <strong>Supply</strong> Cha<strong>in</strong> performance Management (SCpM). We<br />
have entered <strong>the</strong> age of supply cha<strong>in</strong>s with <strong>RFID</strong> technology.<br />
<strong>Supply</strong> cha<strong>in</strong> with <strong>RFID</strong> technology is a global network of <strong>in</strong>tegration<br />
hubs of suppliers and clients that create, track, and deliver <strong>RFID</strong>-tagged<br />
f<strong>in</strong>ished products manufactured from raw materials and semi-f<strong>in</strong>ished parts<br />
<strong>to</strong> multiple dest<strong>in</strong>ations from multiple supply sources. A supplier may serve<br />
as <strong>the</strong> primary or coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g supplier or <strong>the</strong> secondary supplier depend<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on o<strong>the</strong>rs for <strong>the</strong> raw materials and semi-f<strong>in</strong>ished product parts.<br />
A client may be a retailer, wholesaler, warehouse manager, manufacturer,<br />
or even a senior executive. The client may serve as <strong>the</strong> primary or coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g<br />
client or <strong>the</strong> secondary client depend<strong>in</strong>g on o<strong>the</strong>r clients <strong>to</strong> receive<br />
<strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ished products <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> right quantities with <strong>the</strong> right specifications at<br />
<strong>the</strong> right time at <strong>the</strong> right locations.<br />
Each player has a role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> physical movement of materials and<br />
products from one po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>to</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong>. The supply cha<strong>in</strong>,<br />
as a whole, <strong>in</strong>volves all facilities, functions, and activities <strong>in</strong> manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> product, cod<strong>in</strong>g basic <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> <strong>RFID</strong> tags, read<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
real-time track<strong>in</strong>g activities of <strong>the</strong> product <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>RFID</strong> technology <strong>in</strong>frastructure,<br />
and deliver<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> product <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>mer who <strong>in</strong>itiated <strong>the</strong> order.<br />
This <strong>in</strong>frastructure is <strong>in</strong>tegrated with back-end systems such as ERP, SCM,<br />
virtualized databases, legacy systems, and new wrap-up systems.<br />
Figure 1.2 gives an example of how a supplier is related or coord<strong>in</strong>ates<br />
with o<strong>the</strong>r suppliers <strong>in</strong> a hierarchy of different levels. It beg<strong>in</strong>s with a supply<br />
cha<strong>in</strong> at level 0 receiv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> semi-f<strong>in</strong>ished products from <strong>the</strong> two supply<br />
cha<strong>in</strong>s at level 1, one of which receives ano<strong>the</strong>r semi-f<strong>in</strong>ished product from<br />
a third supply cha<strong>in</strong> at level 2, that <strong>in</strong> turn gets raw materials from <strong>the</strong> fourth<br />
supply cha<strong>in</strong> at level 3. The o<strong>the</strong>r supply cha<strong>in</strong> at level 1 transports semif<strong>in</strong>ished<br />
products <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong> at level 0 and f<strong>in</strong>ished products <strong>to</strong> a<br />
cus<strong>to</strong>mer at level 1.<br />
The level 1 cus<strong>to</strong>mer that bypasses <strong>the</strong> level 0 supply cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong> get <strong>the</strong><br />
f<strong>in</strong>ished products from <strong>the</strong> level 1 supply cha<strong>in</strong> can deliver <strong>the</strong> products <strong>to</strong><br />
cus<strong>to</strong>mers at lower levels. One of <strong>the</strong>se cus<strong>to</strong>mers can receive a batch of<br />
f<strong>in</strong>ished products from <strong>the</strong> level 3 supply cha<strong>in</strong> that also sends <strong>the</strong> semif<strong>in</strong>ished<br />
products <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> level 0 supply cha<strong>in</strong>.<br />
Whereas <strong>the</strong> level 0 supply cha<strong>in</strong> focuses on, say, consumer packaged<br />
goods, <strong>the</strong> supply cha<strong>in</strong>s at <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r levels may focus on one of <strong>the</strong> three
