Forms are due nolater than December 1, 2007, and your medicaloption will change effective January 1, 2008.Retiring soon?If you are thinking about retiring in the nearfuture, please contact Member Services to see ifyou qualify for coverage under one of the retireemedical program options.TeamstersCare Eligibility for DependentsTurning Age 19 During 2007Eligible unmarried dependents are covered underTeamstersCare until the end of the year they turn 19.Coverage can be extended to age 25 if they are fulltimestudents at a qualified educational institution.In order to be covered for the spring 2008semester, you must submit a spring semester“Full-time Student Status Form” no later thanJanuary 31, 2008.Forms are available:• On our web site at www.teamsterscare.comunder TeamstersCare Forms;• At our Charlestown, Stoughton andChelmsford TeamstersCare Offices; and• By calling or visiting TeamstersCare MemberServices in Charlestown.Parents and Teenage Drivers: Get to Know the New Rules of the RoadDid you know that motor vehicle crashes are the leadingcause of death for teenagers and that more than one quarterof young drivers killed in fatal crashes were intoxicated?In response, Massachusetts, along with the National SafetyCouncil, has recently put into effect new laws for teenage drivers.The Massachusetts Junior Operator’s bill is a graduated driver-licensingsystem developed to reduce the risks for teen drivers.To view the bill in its entirety, go to the Registry of MotorVehicles web site at www.mass.gov/dmv and click on “Teens &Parents”; or, you may call your local Registry of Motor Vehicles.For teens, this bill restricts the use of cell phones while driving,limits the number of passengers allowed while driving, imposesa curfew, and adds age-specific sanctions for traffic and movingviolations.TeamstersCare Mental Health advises that parents can doeven more to increase the safety and minimize the risks to theirteenage drivers. How? Talk with your teen! Use the followingtalking points to engage in a frank discussion of sensible “rulesof the road.”Contracting: The Registry of Motor Vehicles recommends thatparents can and should draw up contracts between the teen andparent. They should comply with the law and family rules.Additionally, they should include rewards for safe drivingover a set period of time, and loss of privileges for violationsof the contract or laws. Talk aboutwhat to do if the teen is a passenger in a carProstate Cancer AwarenessThe prostate is a gland that is part of the malereproductive system. Prostate cancer is the mostcommon non-skin cancer occurring among menin the United States. It tends to develop later in lifeand will affect about one in six American men.Risk factors for prostate cancer include:advanced age – the incidence increases dramaticallyin men age 50 years and older; race – blackmen are at higher risk; and family history – ifother men in your family have had the disease,you are at increased risk. Research has also suggestedthat a diet high in saturated fat (especiallythe consumption of red meat) and a largewaistline may also increase a man’s risk ofprostate cancer.We at TeamstersCare encourage all men age50 years and older to have a yearly prostatescreening. We continue to provide these evaluationswith a board-certified urologist annually atour Stoughton, Chelmsford and CharlestownTeamstersCare locations. Thanks to those whoparticipated in the screenings held at ourTeamstersCare Offices.
