Edison Hall, home to the
Mammoth Ski Museum,
will soon be transformed
into an intimate 100-seat
performing arts theatre. Phase one
of the remodel, to be completed by
December 2010, will pave the way
for community events like theatre,
music, play readings, fireside chats,
and fundraisers. Phase two calls for
a visual arts studio with a culinary
teaching kitchen to follow. The
Mammoth Lakes Foundation will
continue to own and operate the
remodeled Edison Hall, which will
bring much-needed permanent
educational and community
use space to Mammoth. The
remodel is expected to stimulate
demand for local arts and cultural
programs.
The new theatre will occupy
the existing main gallery with
the Mammoth Ski Museum
continuing to share Eastern Sierra
ski history in the remaining gallery
space. Current and future exhibits
include tributes to ski pioneers like
Dave McCoy, Andrea Lawrence,
Tom Dempsey, and many others.

This summer the Mammoth Lakes Foundation formed a
steering committee to develop a feasibility study for a new arts
and cultural center in Mammoth. Education would be a key
piece of the proposed center, which would be located on the
Cerro Coso – Mammoth Campus. The center would house
a state-of-the-art theatre, culinary program, and visual and
performing arts programs. The Edison Hall/Mammoth Ski
Museum remodel is the first step in supporting the feasibility of
the new center. The feasibility study will be presented this fall.

Services (HMSV) Program will admit

a Health Information Technology
(HIT) program.

Science Academy (HSA), providing
HSA students with access to college

460 Mono County high school
students (page 6). Mammoth High
School is also one of the partner high
schools in the Cerro Coso funded K-16
Bridge Program.

hiker, and Mammoth High

it would allow him to “grow up a
bit, be a ski bum for a few more years
and figure out what [he] wanted
to do before moving on.” Thanks to
the Mammoth Lakes Foundation
Scholarship Jeff decided to attend the
Cerro Coso – Mammoth Campus.

MLF: What are you up to lately?
JW: I am a graduate student at
the University of Nevada, Reno
(UNR) studying geotechnical
engineering. I’m working on
a research project regarding
corrosion of mechanically
stabilized earth walls in Las Vegas.
MLF: Why did you decide to
attend Cerro Coso before UNR?
JW: It was convenient and easy for
me to be accepted [to Cerro Coso].
Also I was given the Mammoth
Lakes Foundation Scholarship,
which greatly increased my desire
to attend since there would be less
financial burden. I am grateful
for the Foundation scholarship.
It allowed me to spend time in
Mammoth while still working on
my education.
MLF: What was the best part
about Cerro Coso?
JW: Cerro Coso had several great
aspects. I liked the instructors.
I enjoyed Joe’s [Slovacek] math
classes; they forced me to really
learn the material. I also enjoyed
how close it is; there was no
commute.

MLF: What do you want for
your future?
JW: In the future I want to finish
my masters program and get a
job working in the geotechnical
engineering field. And perhaps
work towards my Ph.D. in
geotechnical engineering.
MLF: Why should Foundation

other local students attend
Cerro Coso?
JW: For the students, like I was, to
attend Cerro Coso on scholarship
and explore what higher education
can offer is wonderful! The
scholarship is encouraging for
students who might be questioning
college to give it a chance.
I believe education is one of the
most important things in life; it
is the thing that we work for and
no one can take away. I will have
the knowledge from my education
for the rest of my life. It is a
foundation that will help me go
places and experience great things.
MLF: What else would you
tell Foundation friends and
supporters?
JW: I would like to thank them
for the opportunity to find my
way and for the encouragement
to continue my education. Also,
the scholarships they provide to
students will benefit them [the
students] in more ways than they
can imagine.

When Dave McCoy
retired from Mammoth
Mountain Ski Area
in 2005, after spending more
than 50 years building the resort
from the ground up, he turned to
photography as his next adventure.
The Eastern Sierra skiing pioneer,
who celebrated his 95th birthday
on Aug. 24, 2010, has recently
launched a photography website.

now spends much of his time
traversing the Eastern Sierra on

Passion and dreams… they are what give a person vision for how to live their
lives. Recently, I have discovered some of my own personal passions for writing,
music and art through my exposure at Cerro Coso Community College. Because
of this, I am deeply indebted for the scholarship I received that enabled me to
attend college when I have no funds for a four-year college at the moment.
Growing up in Crowley Lake, Mammoth’s little neighbor town, I have always
known about Cerro Coso Community College and had even taken a few classes
during high school. Never in a million years would I have thought that I could
get a fully paid scholarship that would send me to a junior college just fifteen
minutes from where I have lived all my life.
Through the Mammoth Lakes Foundation, I was not only given an education,
but I was also shown a family of friends that cared for each other and each of
its scholarship students. The Foundation asks that each student volunteer his or
her time when possible at some of its fundraisers. Through volunteering, I was
introduced to some of my now very close and dear friends and I am so grateful
to the Foundation for the opportunity.
Without the help of the Mammoth Lakes Foundation Scholarship and those
who support it, I am positive that my education would have come to an
immediate halt after my graduation from high school. Now, I am equipped to
pursue my passions as well as be able to meet new friends and teachers.
This past year at Cerro Coso has been one of the best learning experiences in
my life and I look forward to finishing my Cerro Coso education in the next
school year. I want to thank every person who has ever donated funds or
time to the Mammoth Lakes Foundation for the local scholarships. Without
your help, countless students would be left without a means of pursuing a
higher education.

The Mammoth Lakes Foundation Scholarship program was launched
in 2003 to encourage Mono County high school graduates to take
advantage of local educational opportunities through the Cerro Coso –
Mammoth Campus. Support for an individual scholarship ranges from
$800 to $1,000 each semester and covers tuition and books.
The Foundation awarded 45 scholarships during the 2009/10 school
year and 30 scholarships for the fall 2010 semester.

Mono County High School
Students for Career Day
Students learn about educational
programs leading to careers as EMTs,
paramedics and firefighters.
The Eastern Sierra College
Center (ESCC), Mammoth
Campus, in partnership
with Mammoth High School
hosted a Mono County High
School Career Day on Sept. 24,
2010. In total there were over 450
students from all seven Mono
County high schools in attendance.
The Mammoth Career Day event
grew from a Mammoth Lakes’
seniors-only event in 2007 to a
county-wide 9th-12th grade event
this year. To accommodate student
interests there were 13 industry
tracks and nearly 40 presenters.
Nearly all speakers were full-time
Mammoth Lakes residents and
industry professionals, introducing
students to the vibrant and diverse
career options in Mono County.

huB Zemke’s hexCel skis
It’s 1969 and Hub Zemke needs $1,500 in 12 hours to save his ski company.
Enter Dave McCoy. Not only did McCoy loan Zemke the money, he also
helped relocate the manufacturing operations to a small shop in the mid-chalet
(now McCoy Station) at Mammoth Mountain.
“It was a real love affair,” remembers Zemke. “Those were great times and we
were so naive. There was a lot of romance to it.”

the Mammoth Ski Museum’s winter lecture series. Dates and details to be

Beekley ColleCtion to find new home
After seven years in the Edison Hall building as part of the Mammoth Ski Museum, the Beekley
International Collection of Skiing Art and Literature will find a new home (still to be determined).
The Mammoth Ski Museum will continue to share Eastern Sierra history through events and exhibits
including tributes to pioneers Dave McCoy, Andrea Lawrence, and a cast of characters who helped
make Mammoth what it is today. It was a difficult decision, but it is believed that these changes will
contribute greatly to higher education in the long run. See page 1 for details on Edison Hall.

The Mammoth Lakes
Repertory Theatre (MLRT),

presented the Second Annual
Black Box Theatre Festival at the
Mammoth Lakes Arts Center July
22 to Aug. 1, 2010. The Festival
earned great reviews, producing
twelve performances of The Bible:
The Complete Word of God (Abridged),
Nunsense and Agnes of God over two
weeks. Sponsored by the Terry and
Paula Plum Family and Snowcreek
Resort, the Festival was a mix of
family fun, comedy and drama.
This year’s Black Box Festival also
marked the one-year anniversary
of the MLRT’s union with the
Mammoth Lakes Foundation.
“Last summer’s Black Box Festival
was the trial run,” says MLRT
artistic director, Shira Dubrovner.
“It went so well that we signed the
papers and made the partnership
official in October of last year. We

Sometimes we get so focused
on our mission that we forget to
share our successes and goals
with our friends and supporters.
The Mammoth Lakes Foundation was founded in 1989 to be the catalyst in bringing higher education
and the arts to the Eastern Sierra. At the time, local high school graduates and residents had few
choices when it came to higher education. Cerro Coso Community College had been offering classes
wherever they could find space, usually at the high school or in empty conference rooms. Over the next 21
years the Mammoth Lakes Foundation and a group of dedicated supporters secured a permanent building
for the college and accomplished these goals along the way:
1989 Formed as a 501c3 nonprofit
1992 Influenced the annexation of Inyo and Mono Counties into the Kern Community
College District making the area eligible for state funding of college facilities
1996 Built Edison Hall as a visible start to campus development
1998 Lobbied for Proposition 1A to secure state funding for the $7 million
Dave & Roma McCoy Learning Center, which opened to students in 2003
1998 Received 265 acre land donation from Southern California Edison
1999 Completed a seven-year land exchange with U.S. Forest Service and donated
land for the college
2003 Created the Mammoth Ski Museum
2003 Began awarding scholarships to Mono County residents
2008 Opened the $8.5 million South Gateway Student Apartment facility
2009 Began partnership with the Mammoth Lakes Repertory Theatre to
support community theatre

The future of higher education and the arts in
Mammoth includes a Cultural Center with a theatre and
instructional culinary kitchen. The college campus will
have 1,000 students and offer a variety of classes and
degrees for vocational training and transfer. The student
housing will have not one, but four wings of brighteyed
students ready to take on the world. And we at the
Foundation will be working with visionaries like you to
keep dreaming big. As Dave McCoy said it best, “the
impossible is just something that takes a bit longer.”
