Keeping pace with
the automotive industry
In a highly competitive business like the automotive industry, Saia-Burgess uses its innovation team
to help it stay ahead in the game.
Based in Murten (Morat), the company manufactures its
own parts and factory equipment. Founded in Bern
nearly a century ago, Saia-Burgess has been producing
actuators for the automotive industry since 1987. The
company was recently taken over by Johnson Electric,
the Chinese concern, of which the Murten site is also the
European headquarters.
Saia-Burgess specialises in mechanical devices that
move or control the heating and cooling systems in
cars, as well as headlamps. These actuators are found in
almost all car brands, such as Mercedes, Porsche, BMW,
Audi, Ford and Land Rover. The assembly line at Murten
produces 500’000 actuators a week.
A rule of the automotive industry is that supplier prices
should decrease every year. «The customers expect a
product to have the same functions but to cost less
money. The driver of innovation is the price pressure in
this industry», explains Yvan Bourqui, director of innovation.
This is where the 20-strong innovation team
come in. «It’s about getting out of the box and going
back to basics in physics», says Bourqui. An example is
an actuator with 14 parts designed in 1988. The team
eventually whittled this down to 11 and finally to seven

initiiert und wurde im Jahr 2005 mit dem Innovationspreis
des Kantons Freiburg ausgezeichnet. Die verbesserten
Feinstkorn-Hartmetallsorten von EXTRAMET
werden heute weltweit bei führenden Automobil- und
Flugzeugherstellern für die Bearbeitung von schwer
zerspanbaren Materialien wie zum Beispiel Faserverbundwerkstoffe
eingesetzt. «Wir haben uns somit
zu einem wichtigen Partner für Werkzeughersteller aus
aller Welt entwickelt», erklärt Hans-Jörg Mihm, CEO der
Extramet AG.

both the customer and the supplier less.
Given that Saia-Burgess’ owner is Johnson Electric, it
seems an anomaly that it is still producing parts in
Murten, especially as many other European companies
have outsourced production to China. However, the price
difference between producing in Murten or in China is
negligible. «The lifetime of such a product is 15 years,
so we can invest more money in high performance
machines. At the end, we can offer the same price as
components made in China», reveals Bourqui.

ASS AG:
EIN NEUES DIFFERENTIAL
Die ASS AG in Düdingen hat innert fünf Jahren ein neues
Differentialgetriebe für Volkswagen und Ford entwickelt
und so die Innovation im Unternehmen weiter vorangetrieben.
Neu an diesem Produkt ist, dass es ein
Kronenrad-Differential ist, bei welchem die Räder im
rechten Winkel ineinandergreifen. Damit konnten Volumen
und Gewicht des Stücks reduziert werden. «Speziell
an diesem Differential ist aber, dass es durch die
Optimierung der Verzahnung geräuschlos läuft», hält
Stefan Schoen, Direktor der ASS AG, fest. Insgesamt geht
es bei dieser Technik auch um die Reduktion von
Treibstoff und der CO 2-Werte. Die ASS AG besitzt das
Patent dazu, die 500'000 Stück jährlich werden aber in
Kassel (D) produziert. In Düdingen hat man die Kapazität
zur Produktion von 30’000er Serien. Auf die Frage, wo sich
der am weitesten entfernte Kunde von ASS AG befinde,
schmunzelt Stefan Schoen: «Auf dem Planet Merkur.»
Dorthin wird in den nächsten Jahren ein Differentialgetriebe
der ASS AG fliegen, und zwar in einem Auto, das
nach 17-jähriger Hinreise der ESA dort forschen soll. Auf
dem Mars «war» die ASS AG übrigens schon.
