Putting thespotlight on safety issues, Freudenberg hassignificantly reduced its accident rate and hasbeen maintaining it on a low level compared withthe industry sector for many years.The situation with regard to environmental protectionis a similar one. Many of the company’senvironmental measures go well beyond thelegal requirements. More than 80% of theFreudenberg Group’s production sites aroundthe world have already been certified to ISO14001 and OSHAS 18011 – and all productionsites have to get this internationalcertification.EagleBurgmann BT already had a history of ecofriendlyenergy-saving solutions. What was missing,though, was an all-round concept. Havingcarried out an intensive analysis, the project teamfocused on three key measures. The result: A significantreduction in CO 2emissions.It all began with some careful measuring: Totalconsumption had to be analyzed before a conceptof this kind could be realized. So the amountof energy used by every item of equipment fromthe stamping machine through the air conditioningsystem to the PC was recorded over alengthy period of time under the first stage of theproject. This complex procedure determined theindividual energy requirements which were thenadded together to form a grand total.The second phase involved drawing up the overallconcept. To save energy, it was decided toinstall a 49 kW solar unit on the flat roof of theplant, to fit scratch-resistant anti UV films to thewindows and to install energy-saving LED lightsin the offices. These measures cut annual CO 2emissions by 31 metric tons. An interesting featureof this unit is the T10 support structure, aninnovative technology that guarantees stabilityand yet avoids drilling holes or using ballast, anddoes not affect the roof’s sealing integrity. It canwithstand winds of up to 190 kilometers per hour,and is robust enough to weather a tornado.The scratch-resistant anti UV film ensures verypleasant climate conditions in the offices. It keepsdirect sunlight out, reduces the temperature byat least 5°C and minimizes reflection. It lowersthe energy consumption of the air conditioningsystem, which is particularly high in the summermonths. And finally, high-consumption halogenlamps were replaced by LED lights which usemore than 85 percent less energy.2021
