Goodbye Mother!
Our mother passed away on August 22, 2004,
after losing a battle with cancer. She was over
ninety, we are not exactly sure by how much.
She was a tough lady. She raised seven
children and lost one at birth. She saw her
children placed relatively well, all of
them; something that never was a
guarantee in her circumstances. She saw
hard times and good, always worked from
dawn till dusk, and even with her
weather-beaten and frail body remained
relatively active till almost the very end.
Ever since our father's death in '82, she
looked after our ancestral homestead
mostly by herself and lived there with
Jogesh Rabha, who helped out with
chores she could not physically handle. Jogesh married
four years ago and they had a little boy, who became
mother's obsession and joy. Neeva became her 'true
daughter-in-law' as she told people, because all of us,
her own sons and daughters-in-law live away.
With her is gone the anchor to our roots at our
ancestral village. She was the last of our kin there from
her generation, and her passing leaves a void in our
lives that is doubly wide, as if a bridge has been
breached.
The Guwahati Adda
T
he Guwahati Adda, an informal group
meeting informally and irregularly was
formed a couple of years ago. It meets at the
office of Focus North East, a Public Relation
organization of Sashankagupta Kashyap.
The group takes up issues of common interest after
discussing in the Adda. Few topics were Sky train in
Guwahati, National Games in Assam-will it or won't it,
International tourism in Assam etc.
The latest discussion was on "What after Floods?"
From the Adda side Samudrgupta Kashyap,
Sashankagupta Kashyap, Nitin Gokhale, Amiya
Sharma, Diganta Barua, Adip Phukan, Manik Bora,
Kishaloy Bhattacharya, Diganta Barua took part in the
initial discussion. They were joined by Col. D
Chakravarty, Col. Talukdar, Prof Aswini Baruwa
(ASTEC), Prof S Kakati and AK Das (IITG), D
Barkatoki an T Sarma (GVS), Mr. Bolin Bordoloi, Dr
For all of us expatriates, dealing with the loss of our
near and dear ones are long drawn out affairs, often
spread over years. Rarely have I witnessed our mother
cry. But that day in July 1970, when I
walked out of the house with our father
accompanying me to the 'nongola-mukh
(gate) she shed a quiet tear, not knowing
what might become of me in a far off land
where no one she ever knew went to and
would not come out of the front door.
Many times since, I had to prepare myself
to accept that it might be the last time. A
painful thing to do, even though the
process prepares us to live with memories
gradually, without the shock and
accompanying grief that could confront us
otherwise.
This last July 26th, 2004, I hugged her good-bye in her
hospital bed for the very last time. One again she
sobbed faintly (I am sure she knew) and composing
herself, told our daughter and me, 'ja, jaage-ja' (go,go -
as if we might be late for the flight), like she always
did.
Samujjal Bhattacharya, Dr Sunita
Changkakati (ACRD), Mr. PP
Changkakoti, Mr. M Das (Fishery
Officer), and Mr. D Bhuyan
(Agriculture Expert) etc.
The group discussed the concerns
relating to monitoring of floods
and relief, type of relief to ask for, livelihood, and
preparedness and disaster management. It is indeed sad
to find that forecasting systems are in place but the
government did not disseminate the information
properly. Warning system is also available but not in
use – nobody seems to care, especially on the
government side. Well, the floods offer a lot of
opportunities. Don't you know that so many school
buildings have been washed away when they existed
on papers only?
Assam Society of America August 2004
The group also discussed the idea of having
community centers specially built for keeping people
and domestic animal during the floods. Such buildings
are there in Bangladesh and each is about seven-eight
storied. According to Sanjay Hazarika ex- NYT, these
structures in Bangladesh were funded by various
International organizations. We will have to think big.
The places should also have specially made tube wells
so that the nozzle/mouth is not submerged; solar lamps
since there is normally no electricity in these areas and
boats. Floods will be there and people have to live with
them. One has to coordinate efforts to use the available
grants etc to deal with floods immediately and prepare
for next year. We need the help of the NRAs in the
paper work, conceptualization etc.
Long term question of doing away with the high
embankments was also discussed but would need
bigger platform for discussion which the Adda will
take up soon. IIT team (unofficially) is going design
such a community structure if it gets proper support.
Lack of boats was a common problem all over. Boats
have to be designed for the people although the
indigenous ones are already there. Funds will have to
be mobilized for this purpose. Boat of Hope of Sanjay
Hazarika is being taken up with MIT assistance.
The immediate concern was regarding the present
system of monitoring by the government. The NGOs
can do a better job but there are not too many good
NGOs with so much manpower. The Panchayat system
North East NRI Convention 7th - 8th January 2005
The North East Chamber of Commerce &
Industry (NECCI) is organizing North East
NRI Convention on 7th to 8th January 2005 at
Assam Engineering Institute Field, Chandmari,
Guwahati. The following broader topics will be
discussed in the meet: Agri- Business, Tourism, Urban
Development, Health, Information Technology.
Anyone willing to participate in the event may contact
the organizers.
should be able to do it but they are kept aside. AASU
has been doing some and that has to be promoted.
Another area of immediate concern about livelihood
part is that there must be financial assistance for
buying seeds, fish fingerlings etc. The government has
not been doing much towards it. There are a lot of
people who are happy to stay in the relief camps since
they are getting free food and these are the Miyas
mainly. Politicians' encouragement to do this is also
common.
One could use NGOs like ACRD, GVS, Ecosystems
India, CYRD, Mulberry TAGS, Atma Nirbhar ek
Challenge etc to send funds. These have been doing
good work.. One group from ASA Foundation has
been in touch with ACRD.
The flood affected people in Hajo have said that they
are willing to take loans if grants are not available. If
anybody is willing to put in money as a loan, Eastern
Himalayan Society would be happy to use through its
micro credit fund. Even if a boat could be financed in
an area, it will make a lot of difference.
The devastation caused by the floods this year has not
been seen by the International media and everybody
must make an effort to do his/her bit. Guwahati Adda
will take up the issues soon and build more pressure
groups.
BEAUTY CARE UMBRELLA - Umbrella Made From Muga Silk
M
iddle aged and elderly women have long used
the parasols for protective purposes. Recently
that young woman have fully seized upon
parasols as a fashion accessory. Women always favor
fair skin. Number of women of all ages who worry
about the sun exposure continues to grow.
Page 3/8
Assam Society of America August 2004
Varity of parasols are available in the market. They
are of different shades & designs. Traditional colors
are black, white and blue in dark shades. New
umbrellas have come which provide sun protection
mainly from UV radiations where umbrella cloth is
chemically treated.
One of the main draw back of the traditional umbrella
is, it provides shade but darkens the face of the user.
Fairness of the user is slightly reduced due the shade.
Women of fair skin will appear to be of darker skin
to the observer. This will have adverse psychological
effect among the user especially in young generation.
To retain the fairness while using the umbrella & also
get protected from UV radiation there is need for an
were presented by Sanjib Bhuyan for
discussion. A summary of the meeting
is given below:
1. Flood relief efforts – In the
NJ/NY/PA area these efforts are
led by Purandar Sharma, Pallav
Bordoloi, and Sanjib Bhuyan.
2. Amendment of ASA Constitution –
Sanjib Bhuyan suggested that the
Page 5/8
Assam Society of America August 2004
Ex-President be added to the
Executive Committee as such a
person would have garnered
experience that will come handy.
3. Financial status of ASA – Sanjib
Bhuyan said that there will be
transparency in financial as well as
other matters and there’ll be either
annual or bi-annual reports that will
include financial balance sheet.
Such report will be published in the
ASA newsletter for members
ONLY and others may get a
summary statement. To this regard,
Kedar Bhuyan will work with
Sanjib. Similar financial
transparency will be enforced for
all ASA sponsored projects.
4. ASA Treasurer – Although there
is no formal treasurer for ASA,
Kedar Bhuyan has agreed to take
that position for 2004-06.
5. ASA Foundation –Sanjib Bhuyan
appointed the several key members
to head the ASA Foundation Board
(Mukul Chowdhary, Nomal Dutta,
Jukti Kalita, and Kedar Bhuyan)
and report by Sept 30, 2004 at
which time the Executive
Committee will make the necessary
decisions so that the ASA
Foundation can be formally
incorporated and publicized for
public participation. Note that the
ASA Foundation and ASA are two
separate entities and therefore, their
individual financial matters will be
handled separately.
6. Membership, Directory, Fund
Raising, etc. -- Sanjib commented
that efforts should be made to
increase membership. He urged
those who were present at the
meeting to urge other to become
paid members of ASA. Because
ASA works towards better and
brighter goals for all Assamese
people, and particularly those
living in Assam, i.e., uses its
organizational energy, efforts, and
both financial and manpower for
the betterment of people in Assam
(e.g., Project Hope which provides
material assistance to the Deaf and
Dumb School of Assam), anyone
should be proud to be a member of
ASA. Sanjib also introduced fund
raising possibilities through
businesses some of which allows
“automatic” fund-raising options.
ASA needs funds to carry out its
philanthropic work both in Assam
and abroad.
7. Management of Projects –
currently the following projects
(coordinator’s name is in
parenthesis) are either on-going or
planned under the auspices of
ASA:
a. Scholarship Project (Vavani
Sharma) – to provide
scholarship to the needy
students in Assam
b. Project Hope (Malabika
Brahma) – providing material
and monetary help to the Deaf
and Dumb School of Assam,
Guwahati
c. Project Save Our Culture (Jugal
Kalita/ Chandan Mahanta) – to
make digital copies of rare
Assamese hand-written
d. Project Niki (Vavani Sharma) –
e. Adopt-a-Child (Jugma Bora) –
adopting children from Assam
for support of their K-12
education.
f. Nalbari Mahila Samity (Akhil
Chowdhury) –
g. Book Project (Jugal Kalita,
Sanjib Bhuyan) – providing text
books to institutions of higher
education in Assam. Currently
Jugal Kalita regularly sends
books on technology to the
Tezpur University, while Sanjib
Bhuyan sends books on
marketing, management, public
policy, agriculture, and related
subjects to the Assam
Agriculture University, Jorhat.
8. Sanjib Bhuyan proposed to
implement the following: (i)
quarterly reporting on activities of
each project, including fund raising
and fund spending, by project
coordinators to the Executive
Committee so that better
coordination can be assured (e.g.,
elimination of overlapping
functions) as well as to inform
donors about project status (note:
donors want to know how their
money, no matter the amount, is
used); (ii) revision of the ASA
membership form to let the receiver
have the option of donating money
or material without becoming a
member of the ASA.
9. ASA Newsletter – Currently Jugal
Kalita, Vavani Sharma, Satyam
Bhuyan, Ganesh Bora, Symanta
Saikia and others publish a Web
version of the ASA newsletter
every month (that’s lot of work!).
Sanjib proposed that the ASA
newsletter be published in paper
regularly and mailed to members
and non-members. Several
members present at the meeting
pledged the postage, estimated at
$60 per issue (month) for the 2004-
05 year starting with the August
2004 issue of the ASA newsletter.
Sanjib will call the above named
persons for postage in due time.
Sanjib also urged those members
who were not present in the
meeting to get involved by
donating postage or by other
means.
10. Regular meeting of the ASA – It
was also decided that there’ll be
quarterly meeting of the ASA
members residing in the NY/NJ/PA
region, including its NE Chapter.
Efforts will be made to have
teleconference with ASA members
in other parts of the country. Utpal
Brahma will explore this and will
work with Kedar Bhuyan and
Sanjib to ensure teleconference
facility provided the cost is not too
prohibitive. Following are the dates
for these meetings for the 2004-05
year (host name in right; hosts are
selected at random by lottery; ASA
thanks the hosts in advance). Note
that the August 2004 meeting was
hosted by Mukul and Geeta
Chowdhary on August 8 th .
a. October 8 th or 9 th –
Ritumoni and Kabita Sarma
b. January 7 th or 8 th –
11. Web Site: The minutes of these
meetings will be posted on a
dedicated ASA Web site which will
be maintained by Probal Tahbildar
and Jugal Kalita.
12. Publicity – ASA and its members
have been quite active in the lives
of Assamese people in North
America as well as those in Assam
but such work has not been
publicized well. It is time to let
others know what we are doing.
Strategies for PR work will be
discussed by the Executive
Committee and members are
expected to participate in such
efforts.
NSF Scholarships
T
he National Science Foundation has awarded
Jugal Kalita, an associate professor of
Computer Science a grant of $395,920 for the
period 2004-2008 under its program for developing
sophisticated US workforce with skills and expertise
in the fields of Computer Science, Mathematics and
Engineering.
The grant was announced on the 17th of August by
Dr. Ted Hodapp, Director of its Division of
Undergraduate Education. Jugal Kalita, with the help
of his co-PI, Dr. James Daly, professor of the
Department of Mathematics, will be responsible for
awarding 40 scholarships each year to undergraduates
in the College of Engineering and Applied Science at
the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
Each scholarship is worth $2,250 a year. The
scholarships will be given to 10 freshmen, 10
sophomore, 10 junior and 10 senior students annually.
Once a student wins a scholarship, it will be continued
13. A United Assamese community
and relation with other “probaxi”
Assamese organizations – Sanjib
reiterated that his philosophy is to
try to find a common thread where
possible with such organizations
(and agree to disagree on other
issues) and that he’d try his best to
achieve that. In that regard, he
informed the meeting attendees that
he had already talked to Mr.
Mahesh Kalita, AANA President
and would again contact Mr. Kalita
after today’s meeting and will keep
ASA members posted of the
developments. If Sanjib’s efforts
are not fruitful in a reasonable time
period, ASA will implement its
plan of action which may be
independent of others.
14. Sanjib agreed that regional
matters, such as holding tithi, Bihu,
etc. should be left to the ASA
regional chapters. Currently, the
NE chapter is headed by Prakash
Deka and ably helped by Probina
Tahbildar (Secy.) and Nilakshi
Thakuria (Cultural Secy.).
By Sanjib Bhuyan, New Brunswick,
New Jersey
in the future years if the student satisfies the stringent
requirements set up Dr Kalita and Dr Daly, along with
guidelines from the National Science Foundation.
It is believed that the scholarships will enhance the
quality and depth of the educational experience for the
recipients. The recipients will be encouraged to
explore creative and original ideas through design
projects, participation in regional and national
contests, independent study credits and internships.
Recipients will also be encouraged to take up
leadership roles in the College and the campus. The
scholarships are open to students already enrolled at
UCCS, and new and transferring students.
40 scholarships will be given out in the immediate
future. If any readers of Assamnet believe they are
qualified to receive the scholarships, they should
contact Jugal Kalita immediately.
