This state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art cancer centre <strong>of</strong>ferscomprehensive scree ning, diagnostic and treatment services. UNIVERSITYAKU-FAS Seminar'<strong>New</strong> Directions for Libraries inthe Internet Age'T he planned <strong>Aga</strong> <strong>Khan</strong> <strong>University</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong>Arts and Sciences(AKU -FAS) held its first aca demic sem inar on Novembe r 10and I 1, 2005, titl ed ' More than Books: N ew Directions forAcademic Libra ries ' .For thi s impor tant topic, th e Un iversity had invi te d aninternational panel <strong>of</strong> experts who had hands-on experience <strong>of</strong>setting up libraries. Ms Lorin Ritchi e, Universi ty Librarian <strong>of</strong>the America n Univers ity <strong>of</strong>Sharjah, UAE, was the Guest Speakerat the seminar. Together with moderator, Mr Ernie Ingle s, HeadLibrarian and Vice Provost <strong>of</strong>the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Alberta, Canada,the experts gave informa tive presentations on the changing lookand feel <strong>of</strong> libraries in the 21st century. Ms Ritch ie, a specialiston electron ic resources for libraries, challenged un iversities andtheir libraries to work in partnership with inform ation technologymanagers in order to transform the services <strong>of</strong>fered by librarie sto stude nts and faculty .Ms Ritchi e remarked, " Library staff are changing their ow nwork so that it becomes more relevant wi thin their evolvinginstitutions, an d it has become imperative fo r library andinformation technology pr<strong>of</strong>essionals to work together to deliverlib rary services and information available thro ug h ne wtechnologies, giving stude nts and fac ulty access to the lib raryeven in their hom es and resi dence hall s."Ms Ritchie also examined the way in which Pakistani universitiescan have imp roved access to pr int and electronic coll ections.She enco uraged fac ulty to become more involved in buildingcollections, and discussed methods by wh ich librarians can maketheir libraries more central to the learnin g and research objectives<strong>of</strong> facult y and stu dents.<strong>Inauguration</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>New</strong> <strong>Buildings</strong>continuedfrom page 2"In the 21st century, libra ry buildings are beingtransf ormed into centres <strong>of</strong>teaching and learning, withcomp uter centres and 'information commons " andlibrarians now pa rtner with f aculty to ensure thatstudents develop research and information expertise. The library at AKU-FAS is plann ed to bethe largest modem library <strong>of</strong> its kind in Pak istan with space forover 500 ,000 volumes as well as electro nic resources. It wi ll beequipped w ith the late st information tec hno logy system andupon its completion, would be consi de red as one <strong>of</strong> the mostmod em and well-equipped libraries in the country. •Schedule <strong>of</strong> EventsJanuary - March 2006ProgrammeDategenerously gifted their estate to AKU, this facility houses thenew clinical lab oratories. Th e new lab oratories will doubleAKUH's existing medical test proc essing capacity to 10 milliontests annually.
