THE BMW SERIESCOUPÉ. THERE’SNOTHING LIKE IT.The only genuine coupé in its class. Not only is the BMW Series Coupé more than equal to the fast pace ofthe city, its distinctive sound is the very essence of urban life. On the street, its looks and moves betray it for what it is – the only genuine coupé in itsclass. With sporty contours, a long wheelbase and stretched bonnet, youknow you’re in the presence of an athlete. The expressive lighting designwith optional LED elements and accent lighting will dazzle any onlooker. However these lights are fi xed on the coupé’s favourite sight: the roadahead. Every detail, every line and every shape conveys an impressionof irrepressible power, an unstoppable forward surge. The L-shaped rearlights bring this vision of dynamism to a fi tting conclusion. Glowingdeep red, they seem to open up a window into the heart of the coupé. www.bmw.com/ seriescoupe/design08 09

SURGE FORWARD.LEAVE THE EVERYDAY BEHIND.Dynamism in its purest form.Start the six-cylinder in-line engine. The unmistakable sound of the BMW ifi lls the air, kindling an elation that doesn’t let up until the engine powers down.No less than kW ( hp) is generated by the combined efforts of theTwinScroll turbocharger, High Precision Injection, Double-VANOS camschaftcontrol and Valvetronic. And this power is transformed into a considerabledegree of thrust. Meanwhile there is only one word for the powerful sprintthat rockets the coupé from to km/h in an unbelievable . seconds:respect. And the other two petrol engines are equally worthy of admiration. The sporty six-cylinder i displays impressively spontaneous powerdevelopment and revving power, and the four-cylinder in the i is remarkableprimarily for its superlative effi ciency. The BMW four-cylinder diesel enginesdemonstrate entirely convincingly thateven a thoroughbred high-poweredcoupé can also be surprisingly effi cient. The mighty BMW TwinPower Turbofour-cylinder d, the responsive d and the most effi cient of all, the d with average fuel consumptionof . l/ km, are all exemplary in thisregard. In addition to its effi cient performance, the BMW Series Coupé also boastsunique driving characteristics: the ideal, nearly : weight distribution betweenthe two axles is especially notable. Thisratio ensures that the coupé’s power isapplied in ways that make for greathandling. Being behind the wheel isespecially enjoyable on winding roads, where the BMW Series Coupé canalso get the very best out of another ofits key assets: BMW’s signature rearwheeldrive. BMW Effi cientDynamicsLess emissions. More driving pleasure.ITS MOST POWERFUL FEATURE –REDUCED FUEL CONSUMPTION.BMW Effi cientDynamics.Sustainability as standard.Cars the calibre of the BMW Series Coupé instantly call to mind sheerdriving pleasure, winding mountain passes and roads that seem to go onforever. But even when its driving force occasionally has to be curbed by thebrakes, the coupé can still make the best of a temporary slow-down – thanksto Brake Energy Regeneration. This technology is just one part of theBMW Effi cientDynamics package in the BMW Series Coupé.Other prime examples include theAuto Start/Stop function, the tyreswith reduced rolling-resistance, theOptimum Shift Indicator and theunique Air Curtain (not available withthe BMW i). All these intelligenttechnologies make the ride just asdynamic as it is effi cient. But in terms of responsible andeconomical driving they follow wherethe engines lead. The top-of-the-rangemodel, the i, is at the head of thepack. It comes equipped with aninnovative package of technologies, comprising BMW TwinPower Turbotechnology, High Precision Injection,Double-VANOS and the Valvetronicfully variable valve control, all of whichconsiderably improve fuel effi ciency.Every technology and every detailenable both car and driver to useevery drop of fuel more responsibly. For greater effi ciency in spite of – orperhaps even because of – thesimultaneous boost in dynamics.18 19

In the big wind tunnel at the BMW Group’sAerodynamic Test Centre in Munich, realityis turned inside out. The car stays still whileits environment moves around it. A giant rotoreight metres in diameter (pictured left) thatconsumes up to . megawatts of power(around , hp) drives , cubic metresof air through the closed circuit wind tunnel. Before reaching the test track, the air isforced through a duct to accelerate its speedsix-fold – up to fi km/h. Road conditions aresimulated using fl ve thin steel rolling tracks. The wheels of the test vehicle are driven byfour narrow belts, while the central ten-metrelong belt under the car moves at exactly thesame speed. This complex arrangement ensuresthat the air ow at the car’s undercarriage, wheels and wheel arches is almost identicalto that of a real driving situation. It’s as if thevery road itself is being put to the test, in atesting bay m long, m wide and fi mhigh. A veritable palace of wind. In practice, aten percent reduction in air resistance leads toa good . percent reduction in fuel consumption.Although the body is already pretty much perfectin terms of aerodynamics, it is only actuallyresponsible for percent of the vehicle’s totalair resistance. percent is caused by thecooling air for the engine, transmission andbrakes, percent results from the vehicleunderbody, and the fl nal fi percent is producedat the wheels and the wheel arches – and in allthese areas there is still room for improvement. So the Aerodynamic Test Centre has come upwith the Air Curtain, which premiered world-widein the BMW Series Convertible and Coupé.The Air Curtain protects the front wheels fromthe headwind. Air taken in through vents in thefront apron accelerates as the ducts conductingit narrow, and it is led to the wheel arches whereit exits at high speed through narrow slits, covering the outer faces of the wheels likea curtain. This curtain of air acts like an invisiblewheel cover, imperceptible yet highly effective. With the Air Curtain, optimised cooling-airducts and a smoothed-off undercarriage, theBMW Series Convertible and BMW SeriesCoupé not only boast an excellent air resistancecoeffl cient but also have reduced uplift. Theend result is a reduction in fuel consumption– as well as better vehicle stability. To the rear of the test track, tall hemispherical partitions guidethe air ow back in the opposite direction.Left: Aerodynamics experiments in the giant testing bay arecontrolled from the wind tunnel’s control room.CURTAIN UP.Right: The air ow over the BMW Series Coupé is made visibleby means of a smoke tracer. The slighter the turbulence created, the lower the air resistance. The Air Curtain was developed for the BMW SeriesConvertible and Coupé in the turbulent roar of a newhigh-tech wind tunnel. This new technology reducesair resistance at the wheel arches.

EVERY INCH AN ATHLETE.Detailing for a sportier look.Nearly time for take-off. You step in, your hands grip the steering wheel, anda glance around lets you see what your pulse is about to feel. Pure energy. The interior of the BMW Series Coupé exudes an unmistakable athleticism, even before the drive. But it also conveys a certain elegance. The optionaltrim in Alpine White is a particularly notable feature, forming a clear line thatseems to fl ow into the white, gleaming steering wheel trim. Striking chromeinlays on the controls make an impressive statement. Every element of theinterior, from the rev counter to the decorative trim, is a homage to the racingheritage of the BMW Series Coupé. www.bmw.com/ seriescoupe/interiordesign22 23

THE CITY’S MOST EXCLUSIVE VENUE.SEATS FOUR.Ergonomics and aesthetics in harmony. You have high standards for yourcareer, your life and your future. Weset ourselves equally high standardsfor the BMW Series Coupé.Impressive, even inspiring qualityof this kind originates in the choiceof the best materials. Whether youselect leather or cloth upholstery, you’ll step into an ambiance of instantwell-being. Every seam, every detailand every contour displays a highdegree of workmanship, equallyappreciable by the hand and theeye, and by the driver as well asthe passengers who are just ascomfortably accommodated inthe back as up front. After all, thiscoupé is a bona fi de + seater. So you can share this intenselypleasurable driving experience withfriends, for action-packed days andscintillating nights. And if you want to boost the coupé’sathletic attitude still further, you canopt for sport seats (standard with theBMW i) that give the driver andfront passenger optimum lateral support. Add to this a myriad of featuresthat combine great looks with ergonomic comfort to make you and yourpassengers feel right at home.24 25

SPORT SEATS WILLEVOLVE TO RESE<strong>MB</strong>LESEAT SHELLS.LIGHTER, THINNER,BUT NO LESSCOMFORTABLE.FITS LIKEA GLOVE.BMW seats are regarded as the gold standard ofcomfort, safety and sportiness. Even at high speeds, drivers will enjoy complete control and outstandingcomfort with the optional sport seats. In a BMW, driving is an intense dialogue betweencar and driver. The hands direct the wheels via thesteering wheel. The feet communicate closelywith the engine via the accelerator. And the eyesare guided instinctively towards the instrumentpanel. These precise connections work so wellbecause the driver is perfectly integrated andcan operate all the vehicle functions intuitively.Ergonomics and an optimum seating positionare key, so a seat that meets every demand isessential. BMW seats are regarded by the expertsas the gold standard in terms of comfort, safetyand sportiness. To take just one example: maximum safety isensured by the side airbags stowed in theseatbacks and by the crash-active headrests.Drivers of all shapes and sizes enjoy the fl exibleadjustment systems on BMW seats: in particular, people of especially tall or petite stature relishthe broad height and length adjustment range. There is also an adjustable thigh support, e.g.with the sport seats, for an even more fi nelytuned seating position. The optional, customisablelumbar support against the lower spine is anoutstanding comfort feature, bolstering the pelvisand holding the spine in its natural S shape. The optional BMW sport seats – also part ofthe BMW M Sport package – are the result ofparticularly intensive research and development. They are more fi rmly cushioned with closerbody-hugging contours. Adjustable side supportsbolster the torso when tearing round bends, sothe driver can move more subtly and steer withgreater sensitivity, without having to grip tightlyor lean on the wheel. The optional sport seats afford a seating position that makes it easy to drive fastwhile remaining physically completely at ease. Adjustable side supports bolster thetorso, so the driver can steer safely and sensitively even when racing round bends. But despite having reached this peak of sportinessand ergonomics, BMW is even now working onthe sport seats of the future. The aim is to makeseats that are lighter and less bulky, through theuse of innovative structures from the fi eld ofbionics as well as newly developed lightweightmaterials and the intelligent integration of vehiclefunctions. Less weight facilitates a reduction inemissions and reduced volume means there ismore room for the passengers. The minimalist, almost skeletal seat shells in the BMW VisionEffi cientDynamics concept sports car – theprecursor to the upcoming BMW i seriesproduction model – offer a fi rst glimpse of whatthe future holds. Although these seats appearsimple, the few drivers who have so far been luckyenough to experience this pioneering automobilewere amazed at how comfortable they are.

The Air Curtain is invisible yet highly effi cient. Air streams through narrow vents in the front apron,is accelerated and forced out at high speed across the front wheels, where it creates a curtain of airover the outer face of the wheels. This innovation reduces air resistance, which in turn leads to animprovement in stability as well as a reduction in fuel consumption. An added bonus is that the intakeslend the car’s front apron an even sportier note.

BMW EfficientDynamicsLess emissions. More driving pleasure.BMW was one of the fi rst manufacturers to pursue the goal of effi cient drive technologies, as part of itsmulti-award-winning sustainability strategy. BMW Effi cientDynamics, included as standard, is a comprehensivetechnology package designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions – while simultaneously enhancingdynamic performance. A winner of many technology awards, it has enabled the BMW Group to reducethe CO emissions of its European new-vehicle fl eet by about % since . models currentlyproduce less than g of CO per kilometre. The BMW Group intends to achieve a further % reductionin CO emissions by .BMW EFFICIENT DYNAMICS –MAKING A LITTLE GO A LONG WAY.Different paths to the same destination: unmistakable BMW driving pleasure. Under the umbrella of the BMW Effi cientDynamics project, BMW iscontinuously developing innovative systems that will bring us closer to the long-term goal of emission-free mobility. This BMW initiative for moredriving pleasure is based on several pillars:Technology package. The optimisation of vehicles powered by conventional diesel and petrol engines continues apace. A comprehensive technologypackage enables the reduction of fuel consumption and emissions, while at the same time increasing power output and driving enjoyment. These advancesare based on innovations such as BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the Auto Start/Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration, and many others.BMW ActiveHybrid. The BMW range includes impressive hybrid models, such as the new BMW ActiveHybrid and BMW ActiveHybrid , andthe BMW ActiveHybrid . All of these volume models combine high effi ciency with superior dynamic performance.BMW ActiveE. Since , there has been a new type of dynamism on the road: the BMW ActiveE. Powered by electricity alone, it is manufactured ina small production run, as part of a pilot project. In this way, BMW is preparing the way for the emission-free mobility of tomorrow.BMW Hydrogen. BMW is continuing its research into alternative drive concepts for the future, such as hydrogen drive.BMW i. In line with the BMW Effi cientDynamics idea, the BMW i brand is developing visionary new vehicle concepts such as the BMW i (MegacityVehicle) and the BMW i . While including existing BMW Effi cientDynamics technologies, these vehicles also use new lightweight materials such asCFRP and electric drive systems with powerful battery technology such as BMW eDrive. With a focus on sustainability across the entire valueaddedchain and a range of supporting mobility services, BMW i is redefi ning individual mobility. For further information see www.bmw-i.comBMW EFFICIENT DYNAMICS FEATURES IN THEBMW É SERIES COUP AT A GLANCE.Air Curtain. Narrow openings on the left and right of the front apron directin owing air into two sealed channels. These run along the inside of thefront apron to the wheel arches, where the air re-emerges and is steered athigh speed through a narrow opening close to the external surface of thewheel. The escaping air streams down the sides of the front wheels, thusminimising air turbulence around the wheels and wheel arches, therebyfurther reducing fuel consumption (not available with i).Auto Start/Stop function. BMW four-cylinder engines with a six-speedmanual transmission automatically shut down when the driver stops, goesinto neutral, or takes their foot off the clutch – for example at a red light orin a jam. The engine restarts as soon as the clutch is activated again. Thisinnovation signifi cantly reduces fuel consumption, especially in city traffi c.High Precision Injection. In a BMW, the injectors are located directlyabove the spark plugs. They inject fuel with extreme precision and pressureto ensure particularly effi cient combustion.BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. This innovative exhaust gasturbo charger effi ciently recaptures the energy present in the exhaustthrough the use of the double- ow exhaust system of the TwinScrollcharger ( i). Together with Valvetronic fully variable valve control andHigh Precision Injection, this technology signifi cantly reduces fuelconsumption – while noticeably increasing performance across allengine speeds.Brake Energy Regeneration. Brake Energy Regeneration meansthat the generator (alternator) usually only generates electricity when thedriver brakes or takes their foot off the accelerator – previously unusedkinetic energy is transformed in coasting mode into electrical energybefore being fed into the battery.Electric Power Steering. In comparison with conventional, hydraulicsteering systems, the electric power steering support only uses energyduring actual steering. When driving straight ahead, the electronic motoris inactive.Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance. While the car is in motion, the tyres are constantly changing shape, using up energy and fuel. Tyreswith reduced rolling-resistance have an improved design and use specialmaterials for their road treads and side walls, which reduces deformation.Optimum Shift Indicator. Timely gear shifts are one of the most effectiveways to save fuel. This is where the Optimum Shift Indicator in conjunctionwith the six-speed manual transmission can help. It shows the driver whatgear to use in order to drive more effi ciently.fi1 Status 10/2011.2 Due to become available from 09/2012. www.bmw.com/É seriescoupe/ef ciency

THE BEST FOUNDATION FOR TOP DRIVING DYNAMICS.A BRILLIANT SUSPENSION.Pure driving dynamics – it’s a quality embodied by every single BMW without exception. And the technicalbasis for this thrilling driving experience lies in the suspension. It ensures optimal contact with the roadsurface and ideal road holding in every situation – the result of its : weight distribution and an array ofseamlessly combined innovative components. BMW engineers are continually re-inventing and refi ningthose classic BMW driving dynamics to ensure that every BMW chassis puts the driver in direct contact withthe vehicle and the passion for dynamic driving – while also providing the highest levels of safety and comfort.Optimised road holding is crucial to a truly dynamic driving experience. In the BMW fi Series Coupé, this is achieved by a weight distribution of almost : between the front and rear axles, as well as neutral steering behaviour, a high level of directional stability and fantastic traction. Read on to ndout more.Lightweight suspension. In the BMW fi SeriesCoupé, the chassis is perfectly harmonised withthe engine and transmission. You can feel it in theprecision of the steering, the agile handling andsuperb vibration and acoustic characteristics –and in how the car reacts to the road. The frontsuspension consists of a lightweight double-jointtrailing-arm axle, which combines maximumstrength with minimum weight. Together with themulti-arm rear axle and BMW’s signature rearwheeldrive, superbly sporty handling is a given. It is characterised by a small turning radius, a highlevel of directional stability, dynamic corneringand optimum traction in all situations. : weight distribution. The front andrear axles each carry almost exactly half of thecar’s weight – these balanced masses help tomaintain great directional stability. With its rstclasssuspension and DSC (Dynamic StabilityControl) provided as standard, the BMW fi SeriesCoupé remains stable right up to the limits.Body. In the BMW fi Series Coupé allcomponents are designed to provide a highlevel of passenger safety. The high-rigiditypassenger cabin is constructed to keep allpassengers fully protected. The body onlyyields in precisely de ned areas at the frontand rear. Should an accident occur, thesedeformation zones are capable of absorbinga large amount of the impact, thus minimisingthe severity of the collision as it happens.Active Steering. This system adapts thesteering transmission and power steeringcharacteristics to the vehicle’s current speed(optionally available for the fi i and fi i).So you can enjoy increased agility on windingroads, more safety at higher speeds andgreater fl exibility when parking. If the carbegins to swerve while braking, for example,Active Steering compensates by means ofautonomous, targeted steering adjustmentsno matter what the road surface. That meansthe BMW fi Series Coupé brakes moreresponsively and always stays safely on track.Seven-speed sport automatic transmissionwith double clutch. This optional transmissiondynamically and ef ciently transfers theBMW fi i Coupé’s engine power to the road. The seven gears are split across two separatetransmission set-ups, meaning you can shiftgear with no loss of traction. Switching betweengears takes just a few milliseconds and thepermanent engine connection facilitatesoutstanding acceleration that will take yourbreath away. The automatic mode quickly andprecisely selects the most ef cient gear toconsiderably lower fuel consumption. The barelyperceptible gear changes markedly improvepassenger comfort.34 35 Chassis and safetywww.bmw.com/ seriescoupe/drivingdynamics

The braking system combines short braking distances andsuperior immobility at a standstill. BMW restraint system for driver and front passenger. A combinationof three-point seatbelts, pyrotechnic belt tensioners and belt force limitersprovides the best possible restraint in the event of a collision. Bumpers absorb impacts at up to km/h without damage. Specialdeformation zones at the front and rear absorb forces up to km/h.< km/h km/h Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), incl. CBC and additional functions –e.g. Brake Assist – for the i and i. DSC recognises the risk ofswerving before it occurs and stabilises the car in milliseconds. TractionMode (DTC) is a sub-function which allows increased wheel slip in orderto optimise propulsive power in certain situations and enable a sportierstyle of driving. Airbags. In a BMW, all safety features complement each other perfectly.Six airbags are installed for precise protection – driver and front passengerairbags, continuous head airbags in the front and rear, as well as sideairbags integrated in the front seat backrests. Run at tyres. Reinforced side walls prevent the tyres from completelycollapsing or loosening from the rim if the air pressure drops (standardwith all " light alloy wheels and larger). Run at indicator minimises the risks associated with tyre defects. The system detects air pressure changes in the tyres and then warns thedriver by activating a light. Servotronic adjusts the steering power to suit the current speed. Itensures steering transmission that is direct, precise and won’t tire youout. In addition, Servotronic makes your drive more comfortable byreducing the effort required to turn the wheel and providing maximummanoeuvrability while parking.36 37 Chassis and safety Standard equipment Optional equipment

TESTED INGREEN HELL.BMW trials and tunes every model on theNürburgring, and the BMW i Coupé hashad to prove its athletic mettle here too.BMW test pilots completed this worldrenownedracing circuit in approximatelyeight and a half minutes. The track hurtlespast red and white side-bumpers, races aroundsteep carousels and winds through fl curves. The Nürburgring is an exceptional track and pilotsthoroughly relish its ever-changing attractions, even though they also fear its unpredictablemoods. That is why Jackie Stewart coined thename ‘Green Hell’. The unique emotion of theNürburgring is echoed in every BMW, to be feltby every driver. Every year BMW’s engineersdedicate weeks to the track, putting the carsthrough their paces and tuning their responses. It’snot about setting records, but about consistentlyfast laps – sometimes right up to the limit. A keyelement of the Nordschleife circuits is endurancetesting, and no track or test facility is as wellsuited as the Nürburgring. Just one circuit of theNürburgring with its ups and downs, wildlyindividual loops, variety of road surfaces, andfast and slow sections has the same effect onthe vehicle as a whole day of everyday driving.Everything BMW test pilots experiencedon these Nordschleife sprints has beenincorporated into the BMW SeriesCoupé. In its reliability and even more in itssuperior driving dynamics. Agility, as well asthe engine output, is what this is all about. The eet and forceful i Coupé easily outpacessupposedly more powerful sports cars on theloops and hairpins of the Nordschleife. Thesecompetitors are held back by their excessweight, overburdened front axles or lack ofgrip on the drive wheels. What they lack infact is the perfectly balanced design of theBMW i Coupé.The rear wheels, driven by BMW TwinPowerTurbo technology and the electronicallycontrolled rear axle differential locking functioncleanly transfer the whole of the engine’spower onto the asphalt. Accelerating out of thenarrow, slanted coils at the Nürburgring, theBMW Series Coupé never loses an inch oftraction. The optional double clutch transmissionmakes for faster and sportier gear shifts thanany other system. Disciples of dynamism willthrill to the lightning-fast roar during fastdownshifting. The unique design of the BMW SeriesCoupé places the engine partly behindthe front axle under the stretched bonnet. This is how our engineers achieved perfectweight distribution between the two axles. In thecompact coupé, cornering is fast but controlled. On the Nürburgring drivers were quick to praisethe neutral, sensitive and accurate steering thatresults when the front wheels aren’t engaged inthe transfer of propulsive force.Experience just a few laps as driven by a BMWtest pilot and you’ll rapidly become aware of whatdriving dynamism truly means, and of just whathas gone into the sporty concept behind thiseager coupé. The BMW Series Coupé is anatural on the Nordschleife. And you’ll know it atevery bend you take.
