Gleim had beenaway from his duties since 2007, when his slightly enlargedheart eventually required him to receive a transplant. After a period of time during which Gleim’s heartpounded more rapidly than usual, and following severaltests and surgeries, many medications, lots of waitingand even having to be revived, Gleim would finally gethis new heart Aug. 16, 2008. That date was over two yearssince his ‘red letter day’ when he was in his backyardtrimming branches and could feel his heart poundingout of his chest and could not breathe. The uneasy feelinghappened to Gleim three times in an hour that day, something he had never experienced before.Gleim stayed in Edmonton for three months after histransplant, going to physiotherapy and occupationaltherapy. After the three months, Gleim and wife Cherylmoved back home and began to get his life back to whereit once was.r Anniversa yYear 1 Pizza’s Our elebrating CFor the month of February, receive aFREE caesar salad when you orderany XL pizza!!Eat-in or take-out!• 946-2314 •212 1st Ave. W., Watrous10021SS02Saskatoon Regional Health AuthorityMeeting Schedule forFebruary – June, 2010The members of Saskatoon Regional Health Authoritywill be meeting on the following datesFebruary 10, 2010March 10, 2010April 21, 2010May 12, 2010June 9, 2010Members of the public are welcome to attend.Contact the Authority Office at 306-655-3330 ortoll free at 1-866-230-6966 for further informationand the meeting location.Fast forward to the beginning of the 2009-‘10 schoolyear when the principal took the reins and has beenback in the saddle ever since.Particularly remarkable for someone who receiveda new heart just under a year and a half ago, “I rarelythink about the fact that I had a heart transplant. Honestly,I will go for days without thinking about it.”Gleim said one of the things he achieved in the fallduring the first portion of his return was officiatingall the home football games, something he previouslyenjoyed doing. “In the first game I was a bit tentative butby the second, third and the home playoff game it felthow it used to feel.”Because the nerves were severed where his old heartwas, it takes a bit of warming up for Gleim’s heart to recognizehe is doing extracurricular activity. The refereesaid he would jog up and down the sidelines to get hismuscles ready for the game.“It is something I have to remind myself. I cannot gofrom a dead stop to a fast run without doing any warmupsbefore that.”Gleim also wants to curl again and get back onto thehard court to officiate basketball, although basketballcould be a challenge with all the stops and starts involved. As for school itself, the principal is not as involved inextracurricular activities as he was before and “by theend of the day, I am more tired, but I feel better. We havea good staff and that has helped a lot.“We have such a good staff and students here. Thatmade the transition back to school way easier than Icould have hoped for.”However, in November as the H1N1 virus spreadthrough the country and even into local communities,Gleim said that was probably the scariest time sincehis transplant. Several students were out of school withthe flu, and he picked up a virus from somewhere thattook him a month to get rid of because of his suppressedimmune system.
