The jiggerwas used for patrollingthe track and carried toolsand equipment for trackmaintenance. It was poweredwith a single pistonflywheel motor, was beltdriven and could reach aspeed of 40 miles per hourwith a tail wind. Some of the tools usedfor track maintenanceconsisted of shovels, picks, spike pullers, crowbars, jacks, railgauge, spike hammers, switchbroom, spikes, railbolts, tie and rail tongs, bolt wrenches and a set ofhand wrenches. Before a patrol couldbe made, a line up wasobtained from the dispatcherat the local railstation that listed alltrains and their arrival inthe immediate area. Whenpatrolling tracks, the foremanoperated the jiggerand two men sat up front, one on either side watchingfor loose joint bolts, displaced anchors, loosespikes and made note ofthe general condition ofthe track bed and rails.Deteriorated ties were dugout on the ends, spikeswere pulled out, jacksraised the rails, tie tongspulled out the tie, the newtie was put in place andtamped, the distance betweenthe rails was gaugedand the tie was spiked. In winter, the frost wouldheave an area of track andwooden shims were usedto level it. The new coordinator was with the coachingstaff last season and took the role of defensive linecoach midway through the season. Also on the coachingfront, Kavis Reed was named the team’s running back’scoach and special teams coordinator. Reed previouslyspent two seasons in Toronto with the defensive backsand defensive coordinator. The Riders also brought informer Winnipeg Bluebomber offensive line coach. BobWylie’s line gave up the fewest amount of quarterbacksacks in the CFL for the past two seasons.Meanwhile, the club has also made some signings, one being to wide receiver Jason Clermont. Clermontwho played for the B.C. Lions was released and pickedup by Saskatchewan. Clermont is a Regina native. Alsobeing signed was quarterback Darian Durant who hasbeen placed at the top of the depth chart heading intocamp.Offensive lineman Jeremy O’Day is remaining withthe club for one year and an option; linebacker RenauldWilliams and defensive backs Lance Frazier and LeronMitchell also inked deals.Long time Rider, offensive lineman Gene Makowskyre-signed a one-year plus an option deal with the club. And linebacker Sean Lucas, a potential free agent, signedon for his fourth year with the club. The team also got asecond-round pick while giving up a fifth-round pick.Saskatchewan has not signed receiver D.J. Flick andreleased Matt Dominguez. However, the team may comeup with a different offer for Dominguez to keep him ingreen and white.Meanwhile, the CFL released the 2009 schedule andthe green and white will have preseason games June 17in Edmonton and June 23 when Calgary visits Regina. The Riders’ regular season will see them play at MosaicStadium one Friday, five Saturdays, and three Sundays. The green and white will also host the Winnipeg BlueBombers in the traditional Labour Day Classic, Sunday,Sept. 6.Here is the complete schedule:Friday, July 3 B.C. at Sask.Saturday, July 11 Sask. at TorontoSaturday, July 18 Montreal at Sask.Saturday, July 25 Edmonton at Sask.Saturday, Aug. 1 Sask. at CalgaryFriday, Aug. 7 Sask. at B.C.Sunday, Aug. 16 Hamilton at Sask.Friday, Aug. 21 Sask. at MontrealSunday, Sept. 6 Winnipeg at Sask.Sunday, Sept. 13 Sask. at WinnipegSunday, Sept. 20 Edmonton at Sask.Saturday, Sept. 26 Sask. at EdmontonFriday, Oct. 2 Sask. at B.C.Saturday, Oct. 10 Toronto at Sask.Saturday, Oct. 17 Sask. at CalgarySaturday, Oct. 24 B.C. at Sask.Saturday, Oct. 31 Sask. at HamiltonSaturday, Nov. 7 Calgary at Sask.A smashing good timeA crowded gym at Winston High School was the homeof junior badminton action. Lynne reports Jacob is doing agood job of keeping her up all night but then sleeps allday. On the weekend we noticed activity at the VillagePerk and the Horizon Resort Store. Personally, I hope a satisfactorysolution can be found and we will at least be ableto get our mail in the village. The other day someone remarked they could notunderstand my love of history, maintaining all it wasa bunch of dates and wars. I never thought of historyin that way. To me it is a fascinating story of people‘slives, the development andchanges brought aboutby new inventions, techniquesof doing things andever changing intellectualconcepts and ideas. THE WATROUS MANITOU MONDAY, APRIL 6, 2009 • 17formation aside. Then last night I recalled it again and Ibegan browsing in my favourite book Prairie Reflectionsand discovered a treasure trove of interesting familyhistory. To trace the story I will briefly recap the storiesof the Evensons, Hultgreens and Beavers’ families.Evensons - p. 522. Edwin Evenson was born in Norwayin 1855 and emigrated in 1875. He was a farm labourerin Iowa, U.S.A. and homesteaded near Grafton, N.D. in1880. In 1904 they moved to Santa Rosa, Calif. for healthreasons, but the climate did not agree with Edwin and in1906 he and oldest son Robert came to Saskatchewan andthey decided to homestead on the south shore of LittleManitou Lake. The rest of the family, with the exceptionof their oldest married daughter Johanna Hultgreen, came in 1907.Hultgreens - p. 609. Gustaf Hultgreen born in Swedenin 1870 and emigrated in 1888 and homesteaded in thestate of Washington. He got gold rush fever and in 1895sold his interests and made his way up to the Skagway, across the mountains up to Mile Creek, Yukon toprospect for gold. (the bigKlondike Gold Rush wasin 1896). How successfulhe was is hard for me toevaluate but he acquireda quarter share in a mineat No. 6 Bonanza Creek. Hespent about 10 years in theYukon with only one tripto Sweden in between. In1906 he left the Yukon andwent to California wherehe met Johanna Evensonand married her that sameyear. They went to visit herfamily in Canada in 1907and decided to stay. Theirfirst daughter, Hazel, wasborn in 1908. Gustaf musthave made a (?) small fortuneas a miner because henot only took out a homesteadin the Freshwaterdistrict but also went intopartnership to establish alumberyard in Watrous. In 1912 he bought one ofthe first cars in the area, a1912 McLaughlin from theGrest Brothers. He builtsubstantial buildings onhis homestead. An incidentrecorded in his storyis about when he and hiswife came home one day tofind his house ransacked,WINTERSAVINGSTRACTORS‘03 JD 7320 W/FEL‘73 JD 4630SEEDING‘04 SeedHawk 6012 w/1910 cart‘00 SeedHawk 4012 w/cart‘97 Concorde 5410 w/cartJD 777 Air Cart 160 bu.HAYING‘00 JD 566 R.B.‘92 JD 5352- JD 567 R.B.COMBINES3- JD 9860’s 2- JD 9870’s2- JD 9610’s 2- JD 9660 STS’s3- JD 9600’s 4- JD 9760’s‘03 JD 9650 STS ‘98 CIH 2388PLATFORMS‘04 Honey Bee 36’ Draper‘94 JD 930 Flex‘84 JD 230 P/U ReelSWATHERS‘07 MacDon 2940 30’‘98 MF 220 30’‘97 Premier 1900 30’PTOJD 4895 30’CIH 730 30’ PTOMISCELLANEOUS‘04 Brandt Bale Processorw/grain tank ................... $14,900‘03 Highline 7000HD Processor....... $9,900‘01 Brandt Bale Processor .............. $9,900Brandt 15 X 85 Conveyor ................ $9,900Wawinga 510 Grain Vac ................. $2,900Bourgault 750 Grain Cart ............. $27,900Brandt 774 Grain Cart ................. $31,900WINTER HOURSMonday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:30 pmSaturday & SundayCLOSED09042MF012009FUSIONSELLDOWNprairieford.ca‡the hired man bound and gagged and missing was hispouch of gold nuggets and a gold ring. To digress fromthe historical aspect I was intrigued by a little nuggetof info. Gustaf enjoyed swimming across Lake Manitouand claimed that he survived the 1918 flu epidemic becausehe swallowed so much of the good healing ManitouLake water. The flu hit his family quite hard; in facta 5-year-old son died at that time.Beavers - p. 433. Bute Beavers came to Canada in 1926from the U.S.A. (The Beavers’ family were third generationAmericans of Irish descent.) Bute worked on hisuncle’s farm in the Bladworth area and there he met thelocal country school teacher by the name of Hazel Hultgreen.(see above) and they were married in 1933.Does not this make for interesting history? 24 • MONDAY, APRIL 6, 2009 THE WATROUS MANITOUFrom page 4: NOT TOO LATE, NEVER TOO LATE?Obviously, I’d left out a huge part ofthe story, and it made me wonder why.How was it that my son thought Easterexisted for no other reason than toreceive and eat chocolate bunnies?Without delving into great theologicaldebate or even, for that matter, worrying about people’s personalbeliefs concerning the existence ofGod and of Jesus’ resurrection, thesituation begged the question: howmuch will our children really learnunless we sit down and educate themourselves about important issues? ForI don’t think I’m a bad parent; I don’tbelieve I’m neglecting my child’s moraleducation. Yet somehow I allowed himto reach the age of 14 without teachinghim something that, in my opinion, isan important thing to know. And if I had not mentioned anythingin his lifetime about Jesus’ crucifixionand resurrection, what othercritical items have I just let slip by?The list of topics that I began to considergrew long in my mind. Sure, we’vetold him never to do drugs, but havewe said, “Never do crystal meth/LSD/crack. This is what it looks like. This iswhat else it’s called. This is what it will09042PE00do to you.” No, we really haven’t. We’vesaid, “Don’t drink and drive,” but havewe explained what drinking does to yourvision and reflexes and mental acuity?Probably not. We’ve told him not to lie, cheat or steal, but have we described theconsequences of those actions in such away as he would understand that takingthose actions is detrimental to his characterand future? Well . . .I think we hope our children will modelthemselves as much if not more on whatthey see us do and how they see us actthan what they hear - or don’t hear - ussay. But some beliefs don’t always makethemselves apparent, and as we all know -after all, we’ve been there before - kids canbe less than attentive to their surroundingsand to their parents in particular.Thinking about all this makes merealize it takes more than just hope toraise a well-educated, understanding, thoughtful young adult. If I want my sonto learn about the things I feel are importantin life, it’s up to me to expose him tothose ideas. Me. Not the television or hisfriends, not necessarily even school orchurch or the workplace. It starts at home, and I can only hope 14 is not too late tostart. In October 2008, The Government of Saskatchewanestablished the Uranium Development Partnership (UDP),with representatives from the University of Saskatchewan,University of Regina, urban and rural municipalities, business, labour, First Nations, the environmentalcommunity and Canada’s nuclear industry. The UDP’s mandate was to research, examine and exploreSaskatchewan’s vast uranium resource and provide itsfindings and recommendations to government.
