Attention is paid <strong>to</strong> each <strong>child</strong>’s academic and social progress. Respect is shown for teachers by students and for students by teachers. INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTSGIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM AND YEAR 7 EXTENSION CLASSCandidates for 7C, an extension class for gifted and talented students, will sit for a test provided andgraded by the Australian Council of Educational Research <strong>in</strong> May, and places will be offered on the basisof these results (this criterion may change). Teachers of the extension class <strong>are</strong> hand picked and tra<strong>in</strong>ed<strong>in</strong> gifted and talented education strategies. Application <strong>to</strong> sit for the test must be made <strong>to</strong> the school.The extension stream cont<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the later years of secondary school with specific classes forEnglish/Humanities, Mathematics and Science.THE LEARNING PASSPORTOur merit system is based on six key learn<strong>in</strong>g modes: critical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g; creative th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g; self-management;<strong>in</strong>terpersonal skills; <strong>in</strong>formation skills and communication. LITERACY PROGRAMS<strong>Cronulla</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> has implemented several major programs <strong>to</strong> develop student literacy. All students<strong>in</strong> Year 7 participate <strong>in</strong> these programs <strong>in</strong> English classes, small group withdrawal and <strong>in</strong> other classesacross the curriculum. The improvement <strong>in</strong> literacy levels is demonstrated by the above state averageperformance of our students at the NAPLAN, the <strong>School</strong> Certificate and <strong>High</strong>er <strong>School</strong> Certificate, afact recognised by <strong>Cronulla</strong> <strong>High</strong>’s nom<strong>in</strong>ation as one of the 25 most effective schools <strong>in</strong> NSW.THE SPALDING READING METHOD PROGRAMThe Spald<strong>in</strong>g Program is a <strong>to</strong>tal language arts program <strong>in</strong> which listen<strong>in</strong>g, speak<strong>in</strong>g, spell<strong>in</strong>g, read<strong>in</strong>g andwrit<strong>in</strong>g skills <strong>are</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>to</strong> teach students <strong>to</strong> become <strong>in</strong>dependent and accomplished learners andusers of the English language.The Spald<strong>in</strong>g Program is based on a simple, structured method of spell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>struction. Students learn <strong>to</strong>say, write and read 70 sounds that represent English speech. This multi sensory approach promotesaccurate pronunciation, decod<strong>in</strong>g and spell<strong>in</strong>g of an extensive vocabulary list that teaches students therules and concepts of the written language.Students <strong>are</strong> taught the basics of sentence and paragraph construction and <strong>are</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>to</strong> styles ofnarrative and <strong>in</strong>formative writ<strong>in</strong>g. They <strong>are</strong> also taught the <strong>to</strong>ols for effective comprehension and <strong>are</strong>encouraged <strong>to</strong> model good literature.As a result of the program, students demonstrate significant improvement <strong>in</strong> their spell<strong>in</strong>g and read<strong>in</strong>glevels, especially where the program is supported at home.TEXT TYPESFor students <strong>to</strong> be literate they must also be able <strong>to</strong> write appropriately for a range of differentpurposes <strong>in</strong> all subjects. The functional model of language teaches the types of writ<strong>in</strong>g or text types thatstudents need <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> learn successfully. These text types <strong>are</strong> subject specific eg a report <strong>in</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ryor science, a narrative <strong>in</strong> English, and must be taught with<strong>in</strong> the context of that subject.All Year 7 and 8 students learn <strong>to</strong> read, analyse and write a range of text types across the curriculum.Clear understand<strong>in</strong>g of the purpose and structure of text types has dramatically improved the standardof students’ writ<strong>in</strong>g and their performance <strong>in</strong> public exam<strong>in</strong>ations. AND SELF MANAGEMENTThe D.E.A.R. read<strong>in</strong>g program addresses the need for students <strong>to</strong> become self-reliant and responsiblelearners. The purpose of the program is <strong>to</strong> teach our students <strong>to</strong> value read<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>to</strong> provide a quiet,focused time when they can read and <strong>to</strong> encourage the recognition of the importance of read<strong>in</strong>g.D.E.A.R. operates <strong>in</strong> the 10-m<strong>in</strong>ute roll-call period every day except for Thursdays. All students <strong>are</strong>responsible for provid<strong>in</strong>g their own read<strong>in</strong>g material (a fiction or non-fiction book or an appropriatemagaz<strong>in</strong>e). Teachers moni<strong>to</strong>r each student’s organisation skills and their read<strong>in</strong>g progress. One of thestrengths of the program is that it highlights the importance of read<strong>in</strong>g. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the D.E.A.R. period, Year7 and Year 8 students participate <strong>in</strong> a literacy program called “Read <strong>to</strong> Succeed”. HOMEWORK CENTREThe school library is open before school on Tuesday and Wednesday morn<strong>in</strong>gs from 8.00am forstudents <strong>to</strong> do homework and research assignments. Both the librarian and the support teacher learn<strong>in</strong>g<strong>are</strong> available <strong>to</strong> assist students <strong>in</strong>dividually.PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM - THE TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOLOur older students take very seriously their role of welcom<strong>in</strong>g new students <strong>to</strong> the school. Ourstudents learn how <strong>to</strong> support each other <strong>in</strong> a car<strong>in</strong>g and friendly environment, so that new arrivals canfeel accepted and secure <strong>in</strong> their new school. Our older students also develop skills such as decisionmak<strong>in</strong>g,assertiveness and leadership.Year 11 leaders <strong>are</strong> specifically tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> communication and group dynamics through the Peer SupportProgram. EDUCATIONAL RESOURCESCOMPUTER RESOURCES<strong>Cronulla</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> leads the way <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g computer technology <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g programs. Theschool has four well-equipped computer rooms all of which <strong>are</strong> set up with current bus<strong>in</strong>ess andvarious consumer softw<strong>are</strong> packages such as MS W<strong>in</strong>dows and MS Office. We have also recently<strong>in</strong>stalled wireless technology throughout the school. Under the Federal Government’s DigitalEducation Revolution, all Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 students have been given their own lap<strong>to</strong>p.All computer workstations have concurrent Internet access. SPORT<strong>Cronulla</strong> <strong>High</strong> has a long and proud tradition <strong>in</strong> sport. The school has provided several Australianrepresentatives <strong>in</strong> water polo, <strong>to</strong>uch football and rugby league as well as state and nationalrepresentatives <strong>in</strong> athletics, swimm<strong>in</strong>g, softball and other sports.<strong>Cronulla</strong> <strong>High</strong> competes <strong>in</strong> the Port Hack<strong>in</strong>g Zone <strong>in</strong> grade competition each Thursday and has <strong>are</strong>markable success record <strong>in</strong> this competition. SCHOOL ORGANISATION<strong>Cronulla</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> runs on a 10-day cycle (Week A and Week B) with each day broken <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> 6 x 50 m<strong>in</strong>uteperiods.
