INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTSGIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM AND YEAR 7 EXTENSION CLASSCandidates for 7C, an extension class for gifted and talented students, will sit for a test provided andgraded by the Australian Council of Educational Research <strong>in</strong> May, and places will be offered on the basisof these results (this criterion may change). Teachers of the extension class <strong>are</strong> hand picked and tra<strong>in</strong>ed<strong>in</strong> gifted and talented education strategies. Application <strong>to</strong> sit for the test must be made <strong>to</strong> the school.The extension stream cont<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the later years of secondary school with specific classes forEnglish/Humanities, Mathematics and Science.THE LEARNING PASSPORTOur merit system is based on six key learn<strong>in</strong>g modes: critical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g; creative th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g; self-management;<strong>in</strong>terpersonal skills; <strong>in</strong>formation skills and communication. Students <strong>are</strong> rewarded for their achievements <strong>in</strong>all learn<strong>in</strong>g modes, and they can reach bronze, silver and gold levels through their efforts. The award ofa gold medal <strong>in</strong>cludes a $100 cheque from the P&C <strong>in</strong> recognition of long and outstand<strong>in</strong>g achievement.RECOGNISING ACHIEVEMENTAcademic, sport<strong>in</strong>g, cultural and community achievements <strong>are</strong> recognised and rewarded at <strong>Cronulla</strong><strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> with a range of prizes and awards over and above the Learn<strong>in</strong>g Passport. TheTAFE Taster Program creates a vital l<strong>in</strong>k between secondary education and the work force.Students <strong>in</strong> year 9 and 10 <strong>are</strong> given the opportunity <strong>to</strong> ga<strong>in</strong> ‘hands on’ experience <strong>in</strong> a variety of trade<strong>are</strong>as. The <strong>are</strong>as offered <strong>are</strong> <strong>in</strong> plumb<strong>in</strong>g, au<strong>to</strong>motive, electrical, clerical, hairdress<strong>in</strong>g, market<strong>in</strong>g andaccount<strong>in</strong>g, hospitality and <strong>to</strong>urism, outdoor recreation and fitness <strong>in</strong>struction. The program offersstudents an opportunity <strong>to</strong> learn about their own suitability for a particular trade or profession, andcome <strong>to</strong> appreciate the relevance of secondary education <strong>in</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g them pursue their c<strong>are</strong>er paths.Additionally, if students <strong>are</strong> <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> pursu<strong>in</strong>g a build<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>are</strong>er, they <strong>are</strong> encouraged <strong>to</strong> participate<strong>in</strong> an Occupational Health and Safety Course. This program is dependant on government fund<strong>in</strong>g.Other positive outcomes for students <strong>in</strong>clude improved co-operative team build<strong>in</strong>g, communication,problem-solv<strong>in</strong>g and decision mak<strong>in</strong>g skills as well as learn<strong>in</strong>g appropriate conduct <strong>in</strong> a range of socialsituations.
