BiographiesRaj Jain Raj Jain graduated from A.P.S. University (B.E., 1972), the IndianInstitute of Science (M.E., 1974), and Harvard University (Ph.D., 1978) .Joining <strong>Digital</strong> in 1978, he worked on performance modeling of VAXclustersystems, and Ethernet and other DNA protocols. During a one-year sabbaticalat M.I.T., Raj taught a graduate course on modeling techniques. As a consultingengineer, he is now engaged in performance modeling for distributedsystems and networking architectures. A member of ACM and senior memberof IEEE, Raj has written over 15 papers on performane analyses and is writinga textbook on performance analysis techniques.Mark F. Kempf Mark Kempf is currently involved in planning <strong>Digital</strong>'snext generation of interconnect products. A consulting engineer, he was theproject manager for advanced development of the LANBridge 1 00 andDECserver 100. Coming to <strong>Digital</strong> in 1979, Mark worked on software for aDECnet front end and one of <strong>Digital</strong>'s first implementations of Ethernet. Earlier,he worked at Standard Oil of Indiana on real-time process control systems.Mark earned a B.S. degree from Northwestern University in 1972. Heholds three patents, including one in bridge technology.Alan J. Kirby As the manager of the Communications and Distributed SystemsAdvanced Development Group, Alan Kirby has managed and participatedin the development of products such as the DECserver 1 00 and theLANBridge 1 00. Before joining <strong>Digital</strong> in 1981, Alan was the manager of networkdevelopment at National CSS, Inc., where he helped to design a largescalepacket switching network. He received a B.S. degree (1974) in computerscience from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and an M.S. degree(1979) at the Polytechnic Institute of New York. Alan is a member of theIEEE.James A. Krycka A principal software engineer, Jim Krycka is a supervisorin the VMS Development Group and project leader of the VMS Batch/Print facility. Joining <strong>Digital</strong> in 1972 . as a software specialist, he providedtechnical support for PDP-1 1 and PDP-8 systems. In the VMS group, Jimdesigned and implemented the remote file access portion of the DECnet­VAX software. He also helped to design the data access protocol and represented<strong>Digital</strong> on the ANSI committee working on ISO networking standards.Jim earned a B.S. degree (1970) in computer science from Michigan StateUniversity.Nan cy R. La Pelle As a software engineering manager, Nancy La Pelleoversees the development of management software for network products.She chaired the task force to specify preliminary network managementrequirements for DNA Phase V. Joining <strong>Digital</strong> in 1977 as a senior softwareengineer, Nancy later worked in Software Services and Customer ServicesSystems Engineering. Earlier, she performed systems analysis and programmingfor several companies. She earned a B.A. degree ( 1966) in French fromthe University of Pennsylvania and an M.A. degree ( 1968) in linguistics fromCornell University and studied for a Ph.D.· degree at M.I.T.4
