C E N T R AL I Z E D I N I T I AT I V E SCONTEXTTo reinforce the local recruitment and retention initiatives undertaken by fire departments, aseries of centralized initiatives are also recommended. These are intended to address issuesthat: are Alberta-wide in scope; require capacity beyond the resources of any single firedepartment; or which by their nature make sense to coordinate at a provincial level.The centralized initiatives recognize that local fire departments have limited time and resources,which are predominantly dedicated to running the department and responding to fire calls.Ideally, the centralized initiatives should be coordinated by a provincial body. The Alberta FireChiefs‟ Association is uniquely positioned to undertake these initiatives as it is a provincial-levelorganization with the mandate and connections to successfully implement them.Centralized activities are intended to complement local initiatives, not replace or substitutethem. The idea is that the centralized initiatives act as a broad blanket covering the entireprovince in areas common to all departments; while local initiatives are taken by local firedepartments at the community level based on the unique circumstances and opportunities ineach community.OBJECTIVESBuild a consistent image for volunteer firefighting in Alberta that is positive and engagingand supports recruitment;Facilitate intra-Alberta volunteer firefighter retention;Undertake provincial public relations that promote a positive and realistic image ofvolunteer firefighting;Broaden awareness of volunteer firefighting among target audiences, especially nontraditionalfirefighter demographics;Enhance relationships with the Albertan government and other provincial stakeholders.RECOMMENDED INITIATIVES1. Develop a brand for volunteer firefighting that can be used in a provincial campaign.There is much room to improve levels of awareness in all Albertan communities about theopportunity of volunteer firefighting. Many younger people may not have been asked toconsider volunteer firefighting. Others may not realize such an opportunity exists.
