Pile Testing77Pile Testing EquipmentWith the continuing requirement to buildlarge structures on poor ground, the needfor Civil Engineering companies toimprove pile testing techniques hasbecome even more necessary.To compliment these techniques andimprove site safety, Arbil’s “Applied Forceand Measurement” department hasdeveloped a lightweight, self containedinstrument display system.This system utilises strain gauged, highintegrity, low profile load cells (eithersingle or multiple units) for accurate loadmeasurement and a range of low voltagelinear displacement transducers tomeasure vertical and/or horizontalmovement at the pile head.Operator SafetyOne of the many benefits that the systemprovides is operator safety, as it eliminatesthe need for an operator to take readingsfrom analogue dial gauges or loadcolumns from under temporaryKentledge ® or highly stressed reactionframes during the test cycle.Readings can also be taken remotely fromthe dedicated readout unit which can berun from its own internal rechargeablebatteries from any 12v DC power supplyor via its 240v AC recharging unit.Data DisplayThe three digital displays are energised viaa single on/off switch. These displays giveinformation on the following:Each individual transducer in turnTotal load (usually given in kN)Automatic average displacement(usually given in 0.01mm)While the system is ideal for maintainedand cyclic tests and has auto-off batterysaving features, this can be disabled togive a constant display when carrying outconstant rate penetration or uplift tests.Conventional load column units andanalogue dial gauges are also availablewhere load measurement can be carriedout in a safe manner.Applied ForceUtilising hydraulic cylinders from Arbil’sextensive range, heavy duty rubber protectedhoses and the choice of hand and poweredpumps; loads can easily be applied andmaintained from a remote monitoringposition.Of particular use are the compressed airdriven pumps which incorporate an autoholdfacility to ensure accurate loadmaintenance during lengthy “hold” periodswithin a given loading cycle.Monitoring DevicesA complete range of load application andmonitoring devices are available from10kN load pressure plate bearing testing to10,000kN per cylinder pile tests.Test and CalibrationArbil’s “Applied Force and Measurement”engineers are fully trained to calibrate andproof test all equipment before shipment tosite, with all certificates traceable to theNational Physical Laboratory and UKAS.A self-contained Tangye ® hydraulic jack completewith calibrated gauge for small plate bearing ormini pile tests.LOAD MEASUREMENT AND TESTINGwww.arbil.co.uk • 0845 600 4049
