Don’t givethe caller your computer access codes and don’t provideyour credit card information. The virus scam has grown to epidemic proportionsin Canada, now accounting for between 70 and 80 percent of frauds reported daily to the CAFC. “We begannoticing virus scam calls in March 2010. Since then, they’ve become an increasing proportion of our calls. Now, they’re the scam we deal with most often,” saidRCMP Sgt. Paul Proulx of the CAFC.This dramatic increase means the scam is working– more and more Canadians are being targeted by thevirus scam. Proulx warns, "If a scammer is able to log onto your computer then he has access to all the personalinformation you have stored there, including your bankinginformation.”Here’s a typical scenario: a caller, often claiming towork for Microsoft or another reputable software company, will cold-call you and ask if your computer is runningslowly or not working as it should. He will thenoffer to repair your computer via internet access, whichcan involve either software installation or the callergaining remote control of your computer after you’vegranted him access. Payment for the software or the repairservice is handled via your credit card with chargestypically ranging from $35 to $470 per call.Allowing a third party to download software or re-(Continued on page 12)Maria’s Tailoring& AlterationsMon. to Wed. 11 to 6, Thurs & Fri. 11 to 7:30, Sat 11 to 4:30Alterations • Reflective Tape for Coveralls • Formal WearFormalDresses forLadies &ChildrenIT'S TIME TO GETYOUR WINTERJACKETS REPAIREDZippers, Tears,Buttons, ClaspsMaria's fixes them allHem Pants - $ 9 .00Maria’s sells: BridalHeadpieces & Veils,Bridesmaid &Flower GirlDresses and Evening Gowns.Midtown Mall, Downtown ♦ (780) 706-7092'Mmmmm...toasty'Gift Card20$20EveryFridayDraw For$20 Gift Card& Oil KingsTicketsCatering, Eat-In& Delivery3732 - Kepler Street St. - 780-778-4414

Toothpaste, mouthwash and dental rinses are justsome of the ways to use fluoride properly if you chooseto. The fluoride in dental products is pharmaceutical gradewhile the stuff in the tap is industrial grade. My issue hasand always will be the CONSUMPTION of industrialgrade fluorosilicic acid through water fluoridation. Thereis no need to swallow fluoride for it to have positive effecton your teeth. If Health Canada agrees that the mainbenefit from fluoride comes from direct contact with theteeth then my saying so shouldn’t offend anyone becauseour country’s health body says so themselves. All of the information that I have provided fromthe beginning has been truthful and backed by science. The only time I used the words “in my opinion” was lastmonth when I spoke about the fluoridation info night andhow it went. Other than that, EVERY piece of informationI have dispensed to you has been fact and not simply“how I feel” or “what I think.” I can back everything I sayand would gladly do so if asked. I will provide a websiteat the end of this article as well as my contact email. On October 11th, our town council voted against removingthe fluoride from our water by a vote of 4-2. Byvoting to keep the fluoridation they have taken the responsibilityfor it and that is quite significant. I know thereare children in Whitecourt with dental fluorosis, which isa discolouring of the teeth due to fluoride overexposure(Continued on page 11)

Having discoloured teeth canbe hurtful if a child is teased for it by their peers and couldcause low self-esteem or even depression. The dental repairsfor this are considered cosmetic and are usually notcovered by insurance.Did you know that the practice of fluoridation couldbe considered illegal? Back in 1957 our Supreme Courtruled that when added to water, fluoride is a “compulsorypreventative medication.” This ruling has NEVER beencontested by anyone including our Canadian government. It could be argued municipalities do not have the authorityto add a chemical substance to the town water supplyfor medicinal purposes as stated by our Food and DrugAct and as ruled by our Supreme Court.Since the start of this year 19 communities have votedto end fluoridation, 5 of which were in Canada, includingSlave Lake. There are more places right here in Albertawith citizens fighting to join that list including Red Deer,Edmonton, Edson and Hinton. In the October 19th edition of the Whitecourt Star,Councillor Hodgson said that he bases his decisions onscience, not legalities. Councillor Chartrand, who madethe motion to end Whitecourt’s fluoridation, stated “ifwe have one citizen of this community that has a thyroidproblem and drinking the fluoride water exacerbates thecondition, that cannot be fixed, that is serious.” I believeour councillors have love for this community and I knowthat harming the health of one of us is the last thing theywant to do but the odds of it happening or having alreadyhappened are high. There are many parts of the body that can be harmedby ingesting fluoride including your brain, thyroid, kidneysand bones. Some people are less able to filter fluorideand could be suffering dearly without knowing it. Healthyindividuals excrete roughly 50% of the fluoride consumedevery day, but those who are unhealthy excrete much lessand the rest accumulates within the body. Are we to believethat accumulating that much fluoride overtime doesnothing to the body? Cancer, specifically osteosarcoma, has been linked to fluoride consumption in young boysand there are currently lawsuits underway in the UnitedStates concerning children who have been affected. For those who are worried that our teeth will fallout, fear not. The World Health Organization has compiledinformation concerning countries with and withoutfluoridation to see who has more cavities. Of the 4 countriessurveyed with fluoridation and the 14 without it, allhad nearly the same decline in cavities with several nonfluoridatedcountries having an even better decline thenwe do. OUR TEETH WILL NOT FALL OUT if we endour fluoridation but they will definitely fall out if we stopbrushing our teeth.LOSE YOURSELFDAY SPA~ 780-778-4883 ~On Site Massage Therapist, Hair Stylist,Estheticians & Gel Nail Tech• Gel Nails• Infrared Sauna• Ear Piercing• Spray Tan• Waxing• Eminence Facial• Aqua Massage• Spa Manicure• Day Packages• Spa Pedicure~ Whitecourt’s Largest Day Spa ~Givethe Gift ofRelaxationto yourLoved OnesThere are more countries that DO NOT fluoridatethen there are those that do. That gives us concrete proofthat fluoridation is not necessary because the overall ratesare going down with or without it. These countries areutilizing different products or methods and are havingthe same success we are WITHOUT jeopardizing theirpeople’s health or rights. Your computer canalso be converted to a bot-net, which means criminalscan use it without your knowledge or participation. Ironically, 1969was the year a junior militaryofficer called Gaddafioverthrew the Libyanmonarchy in a bloodlessrevolution.Today, a similar widespreadprotest dynamiccould be occurring. Indeed, the current change movementsmight turn out tohave a more dramatic effecton power elite policies thanthe protests of the 1960s. Alot will depend on the reactionof those in power. The financial situationis the current spark behindmuch of the unrest. Muchof the Arab Spring waslargely driven by a crumblingeconomy, with foodprices and unemploymentrising dramatically in someArab countries and elsewhere. To be sure, westerninvolvement also had a lotto do with the extent of theprotests in some Arab countries. This is particularlytrue where armed attacksby rebel groups occurred. In the U.S., protestshave sprung up nationwidein support of the OccupyWall Street movement.Greece has perhaps takenthe lead in massive protestsagainst the financialpolicies of the day. Unfortunatelythere has been lossof life in this country duringthe events. Still the levelof public support is quitehigh. In a survey publishedin June 2011 by Public Issueon behalf of the GreekTV channel Skai, 95% ofpeople asked said they hadpositive impressions aboutthe movement.Three years after thefact, Icelanders are stillmarching outside their parliamentbuildings demandingan end to financial policiesthat penalize innocentpeople and reward banksengaged in questionableactivities. In fact, the OccupyWall Street movementis giving more impetusto ongoing protestsaround the world. The Irishprotests against the financialsystem have been givennew life by the OccupyDame Street movement, focusing on that country’sfinancial district. In Canada, the Occupy movementis also spreading across thecountry. One of the main criticismsof the new protests isthat there is little cohesionbetween the concerns ofvarious protesting groups. For example, in the 1960’sprotests, there were specificgoals shared, such asending the Vietnam War orensuring civil rights for all. However, in the modernday protests, correcting anunjust financial system isindeed a clear overarchinggoal for the various protest. It could also be consideredthat the variety in the concernsof the protest groupsbeyond their push to changefinancial policy is indicativeof the democratic natureof the movement. It is far too early to tellif the growing discontentand level of activism willhave a significant effectthis time around. This also means thatworkers in the small business sector earn the same wagesas those in big corporations, have the same skills andtraining, and are just as productive."[Emphasis added.]The Landesbanks function as "universal banks" operatingin all sectors of the financial services market. Allare controlled by state governments and operate as centraladministrators for the municipally-owned savingsbanks, or Sparkassen, in their area. The Sparkassen were instituted in Germany in thelate 18th century as nonprofit organizations to aid thepoor. The intent was to help people with low incomessave small sums of money, and to support business startups. The first savings bank was set up by academicsand philanthropically-minded merchants in Hamburgin 1778, and the first savings bank with a local governmentguarantor was founded in Goettingen in 1801. Themunicipal savings banks were so effective and popularthat they spread rapidly, increasing from 630 in 1850 to2,834 in 1903. Today the savings banks operate a networkof over 15,600 branches and offices and employover 250,000 people, and they have a strong record ofinvesting wisely in local businesses.Targeted for PrivatizationThe reputation and standing of the German publicbanks were challenged, however, when they emergedas competitors in international markets. Peter Dormanwrites:"[T]he EU doesn’t like the landesbanken. They denouncethe explicit and implicit public subsidies thatstate ownership entails, saying they violate the rules ofcompetition policy. For over a decade they have foughtto have the system privatized. In the end, the dispute issimply ideological: if you think that public ownershipshould only be an exception, narrowly crafted to addressspecific market failures, you want to see the landesbankenput on the auction block. If you think an economyshould be organized to meet socially defined needs, youwould want a large part of capital allocation to be responsiveto public input, and you’d fight to keep thelandesbanken the way they are." (There is a movementafoot in the US to promote public banking.)The vicissitudes of German banking in the last decadewere traced in a July 2011 article by Ralph Niemeyer,editor-in-chief of EUchronicle, titled “Commission’sDirty Task: WESTLB Devoured by Private Banks.”He notes that after 1999, the major private banks leftthe path of sustainable traditional banking to gamblein collateralized debt obligations, credit default swaps, and derivatives. Private German banks accumulated anestimated €600 billion in toxic assets through their investmentbanking branches, for which German taxpayerswound up providing guarantees. Deutsche Bank AGwas feeding its record profits almost exclusively throughits investment banking division, which made a fortunetrading credit default swaps on Greek state obligations. When this investment turned sour, the German governmenthad to bail out the financial institution into whichDeutsche Bank AG dumped these toxic assets. While the large private banks were betting on thecasinos of the financial markets, lending to businessesand the “real” economy was left to the public Sparkassen, which were more efficient in serving average citizensand local business because they were not stockcompanies that had to satisfy shareholders’ hunger forever-larger dividends. Today the market share of privatebanks in Germany is only 28.4%, and Deutsche BankAG dominates the segment. But with its 7% marketshare, it is still well behind the public banks owned bymunicipalities and communities.Neimeyer says the private banks wanted to break upthe market dominance of the public banks to get a biggerpiece of the pie themselves, and they used the EuropeanCommission to do it. The Commission had been lobbiedsince the early 1990s by German private banks and byDeutsche Bank AG in particular to attack the German(Continued on page 22)LicensedCVIPFacilityComplete scaffold and access solutionsCell: 780-779-7773Phone: 780-778-651924 HR SERVICEEmail: don.kuzyk@skywaycanada.caScaffold • Shoring • Swing StageHeavy Duty Parts & Service780.706.2252 • 24 HR ON CALL4004-41st Ave (Old Whitecourt Transport)

But while they “lost billionsin the Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank and LehmanBrothers Ponzi scheme,” Niemeyer says the extentto which they became involved in highly speculativetransactions was “laughable in comparison with thedamage done by private banks, for whom taxpayers arenow providing guarantees.”It was the public banks and Sparkassen that suppliedthe real economy with liquidity, and that steppedin for the private banks when they withdrew to bet inthe financial casino; but it was on the failings of theLandesbanken and Sparkassen that the media focusedtheir attention. The real motive, says Niemeyer, was thatthe large private banks wanted the public banks’ marketshare themselves:"In order to win back this important market share, ithas become a prerogative to destroy public banking inGermany completely. This unpopular move could nevercome from the German government itself, so that’s whythe [European] Commission is being employed for thisdirty job."The Price of SuccessThe German public banks were brought down byknocking their public legs out from under them. Previously, they had enjoyed state guarantees that allowedthem to acquire and lend funds at substantially betterrates than private banks were able to do. But in 2001, thesSeltecComputers778-4501 #6 3702 37 Ave.• Computer Sales & Service• PC & Notebook Repair• On-site Servicing• Network Consulting• Domain Hosting• Wireless High Speed InternetOur Shop is A+ Certified!European Commission ruled to strip the Landesbanksof their explicit state credit guarantees, forcing them tocompete on the same terms as private banks. And todaythe European Banking Authority is refusing to count thebanks’ implicit state guarantees in their “stress tests” forbanking solvency. The upshot is that the German public banks are beingstripped of what has made them stable, secure, andable to lend at low interest rates: they have had the fullfaith and credit of the government and the public behindthem. By eliminating the profit motive, focusing on thepublic interest, and relying on government guarantees, the German public banks were able to turn bank creditinto the sort of public utility described by Prof. Hudson. The example of Germany shows that even successis no guarantee in the face of a relentless onslaught ofpropaganda by large privately-owned banks interestedonly in making money for their CEOs, wealthiest clientsand shareholders. But peering behind the propaganda, the public banking model that helped underwrite Germany’seconomic success might be the fast track to aU.S. banking system that serves Main Street rather thanWall Street.Ellen Brown is an attorney and president of the PublicBanking Institute, http://PublicBankingInstitute.org.In Web of Debt, her latest of eleven books, she showshow a private cartel has usurped the power to createmoney from the people themselves, and how we the peoplecan get it back. The version posted was, in fact, nearly identical to one that has been circulating since atleast the mid-1960s.In 2003 the legend was made into a song and recordedby Brad Paisley. As to whether there could be any truth to the legend'spremise, insurance policies are generally writtenso that deliberate actions on the part of the policyholderscannot trigger payouts. Furthermore, destroying yourown property isn't arson, as long as the act isn't intendedto defraud anyone. If a court had already ruled that theinsurance company was required to pay, then obviouslyno fraud was committed, and thus the burning could notbe considered arson. When you receive a story reported to be true, and especially if you are asked to forward the story,a simple search with keywords from the e-mail, alongwith the word 'hoax', will help confi rm or repudiate theauthenticity of the event.• Interior FinishingCallTrevor403-302-8654Email: victorycarpentryab@gmail.comcarpentryayab@aicom"No JobIs TooSmall"
