Allianz Global Assistancewelcomes you to Australia!We understand that maintaining your health is an importantpart of making your stay in Australia as safe and enjoyableas possible.Allianz Global Assistance is here to assist and provideservices and information that make it easy to understandand use the health cover which is available to you, whilststudying in Australia.What is <strong>OSHC</strong>?<strong>Overseas</strong> <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Cover</strong> (<strong>OSHC</strong>) is health insurance forinternational students which provides cover for the costs of:• Out of hospital medical treatment• In hospital medical treatment• Prescription medicines• Surgically implanted prostheses• Emergency ambulance transportThe Department of <strong>Health</strong> and Ageing (DHA) regulates<strong>OSHC</strong> and <strong>OSHC</strong> providers.Why is <strong>OSHC</strong> important?<strong>Student</strong> Visa requirementThe Australian Government through the Department ofImmigration and Citizenship requires all holders of a <strong>Student</strong>Visa to maintain <strong>OSHC</strong> during their entire stay in Australia.Section one:<strong>OSHC</strong> Essentials policyWho is eligible for <strong>OSHC</strong>?<strong>Overseas</strong> students are eligible for <strong>OSHC</strong>. You are an overseasstudent if you are:(a) a person who is the holder of a <strong>Student</strong> Visa; or(b) a person whoiiiiiiis an applicant for a <strong>Student</strong> Visa; andis the holder of a Bridging Visa; andwas, immediately before being granted theBridging Visa, the holder of a <strong>Student</strong> Visa.Single or Family <strong>Cover</strong>Your Certificate of Insurance will show which cover and policyyou have selected. Your cover may be either:• Single – covering only the overseas student; or• Dual family – covering the overseas student, and either oneadult spouse or recognised de facto partner or one or morechildren or step-children under the age of 18 years who arenot married; or• Multi family – covering the overseas student and morethan one dependant, which can only include one adultspouse or recognised de facto partner and one or moredependant children.Maintaining <strong>OSHC</strong> is a mandatory conditionAccording to <strong>Student</strong> Visa condition 8501, overseas studentswho do not maintain their <strong>OSHC</strong> are at risk of having theirvisa cancelled.Medical treatment can be expensive<strong>Overseas</strong> students are not eligible for Medicare (the publichealth insurance system for Australian Residents). Withoutaccess to Medicare, overseas students may have difficultypaying for medical treatment. In most cases, hospital treatmentwill cost more than $800 per day.2 3
