A visitor’s guideWelcome to <strong>Papworth</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong><strong>Critical</strong> <strong>Care</strong> <strong>Area</strong>This leaflet will give youinformation about <strong>Critical</strong><strong>Care</strong> (CCA), to help makethe experience less stressful.<strong>The</strong> staff in CCA are alwaysavailable to answer yourquestions and provide youwith as much information aspossible.<strong>Papworth</strong> <strong>Hospital</strong> providesspecialised heart andlung services, known ascardiothoracic services.CCA is one area of the hospitalwhere patients are admitted ifthey require intensive therapyor care.<strong>The</strong> unit has 32 beds including5 side rooms. One nurse usuallycares for only one patient on<strong>Critical</strong> <strong>Care</strong> except on someoccasions when the level ofcare required by patientsallows for one nurse to carefor two patients at the sametime.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Critical</strong> <strong>Care</strong> team consistsof nurses, doctors and alliedhealth professionals suchas health care assistants,physiotherapists, dietitians,pharmacists, technical staff,ward clerks and housekeepers.<strong>The</strong>se all contribute to thecare and support of critically illpatients.<strong>Critical</strong> <strong>Care</strong> is led by twomatrons with a team ofexperienced sisters (criticalcare practitioners). <strong>The</strong>y areresponsible for ensuring thehighest standard of care isdelivered and are alwaysavailable to answer anyquestions. A consultant inanaesthesia and intensive careleads the team on a daily basis.1
