Competitiveness and unemploymentindicators place the EU behind its main global rivals. Moreover, the crisis has put in doubt the overallpolitical architecture and economic governance of the Union. With millions of citizens unemployed,to amend inequalities and sustain a democratic and social Europe have become issues of legitimacyfor the European political elite and for the whole project of united Europe.
