Established in 1994, CEH is a mult idisciplinary, environmental research organisat ion wit h some 600 staf and well-equipped laboratories and fi eld facilities at nine sites t hroughout t he Unit ed Kingdom. CEH's mission is to "advance t he science of ecology, environmental microbiology and hydrology t hrough high quality and internationally recognised research leading to bett er understanding and quant ifi cat ion of the physical, chemical and biological processes relating to land and freshwat er and living organisms wit hin t hese environments". The Biological Records Cent re is operated by CEH, based at CEH Monks Wood. BRC is joint ly funded by CEH and t he Joint Nature Conservation Committ ee (www.jncc.gov.uk), t he latter act ing on behalf of the statutory nat ure conservation agencies in England, Scotland,Wales and Nort hern Ireland. CEH and JNCC support BRC as an important component of t he developing National Biodiversity Network. BRC seeks to help nat uralists and research biologists to co-ordinate t heir eff ort s in studying the occurrence of plant s and animals in Britain and Ireland, and to make t he results of these st udies available to others.
