Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard is a food pantry with a mission is to provide healthful, wholesome
food to people in need, as well as nutrition and gardening education. MHC offers services in ways
that build community while enhancing the dignity, respect, and self-care of all involved.
We envision a community in which everyone has equal access to nutritious food, waste is minimized,
and all members are healthy, self-sufficient, and empowered to reach their full potential.

2009 was the busiest year on record for MHC’s Food
Pantry program. On average 1,900 clients shopped at MHC
every week selecting a total of 98,465 bags of healthy groceries
throughout the year. With a 14% increase in client services we
often saw long lines during food pantry open hours.

2009 at Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard
Nationwide demand for food assistance was at a 14-year high during 2009, and the daily line of patrons waiting to use MHC’s Food
Pantry showed the need was real in our own community. A recent study done by the USDA showed that over 49 million Americans
are food insecure. This means families skipped meals or cut portions at some point during the year, or they were eating cheaper or
less varied foods, relying on government aid like food stamps, or visiting food pantries and soup kitchens. A record 36 million people
are now enrolled in the food stamp program – up 40% from just two years ago.
The fact that Monroe County has the highest poverty rate in the state means that there are thousands of households struggling with
hunger right here in our community. Unemployment, under-employment, rising food prices, and lack of affordable health care are
just some of the forces at play which push many into the hard reality of asking for help. While for some hunger means a lack of food,
for others it is often a lack of access to the right foods. With limited resources many households forgo the whole fresh foods that fuel
the health, growth, and energy of our communities. That’s why MHC always stocks the healthiest foods available, why we grow our
own fresh organic produce, and why we teach patrons how to prepare healthy meals on a budget.
During 2009, thousands of households relied on us to help make ends meet when times were hard. Last year, MHC served 14%
more people than in 2008, providing 98,465 bags of healthy groceries to clients. We redistributed a total of 960,000 pounds of food.
Clearly, the demand for food assistance is rising steadily for those in need.
MHC has provided 519,943 bags of groceries to our patrons since 1998

MHC is the largest agency partner of Hoosier Hills Food Bank, redistributing 30% of all of their food in 2009.
This increase in demand tested our ability to meet the needs of our patrons but we met the challenges the year dealt us with
resolve and determination.
In the Food Pantry: After seven years of having just two staff we added a Food Pantry Coordinator position, to help meet growing
demand for program services. We also purchased a new delivery van with the assistance of Jack Hopkins Social Service Fund, Curry
Auto Center and Mediaworks. Our new box truck can haul more than twice as much as our old vehicle – allowing us to stock significantly
more food on our pantry shelves each day.
MHC’s garden and nutrition programs offered 30 classes to our clients, dozens of hands-on volunteer opportunities in the gardens,
partnered with three youth programs to offer regular gardening classes and handed out over 5,100 plants and 1500 recipes to our
clients. With a small staff these successes are largely due to the hard work of our dedicated volunteers – over 90% of whom are also
food pantry patrons. We ended the year with our volunteers logging over 10,000 hours to power our programs! And lastly, Mother
Hubbard’s Cupboard received the “Best of the Best” Indiana Achievement Award in 2009 from the Sycamore Foundation. This prestigious
award recognized MHC for programmatic innovation, adaptability and impact.
We couldn’t have made it through 2009 without you, and the support from our partner agencies, businesses and community
members, the hard work of our dedicated staff, board and volunteers. Your generous support purchased food, stocked shelves, and
provided nutrition education and garden classes. So, thank you.
We currently serve more patrons than we ever dreamed possible out of our tiny 900 square foot space. We are already bursting at the
seams. To better meet the steadily growing demand, we foresee the need to find a larger space in the near future. During 2009 we
were able to establish a reserve which we hope will seed expansion into a new facility. We need your support more than ever as we
look to the future.

MHC’s Fiscal Policy is to maintain a three month
operating reserve. Additionally, MHC is growing a reserve for
future facility expansion to meet the needs of growing client
demand and programs.

of community members and civic
groups who believe in our mission and

In-kind donations: We are able to maximize
our services and minimize our cost
due to generous in-kind donations of food,
rent, supplies, and labor.
Grants: We also received grant funding
from government agencies as well as public
and private foundations, in support of operational
expenses, program expansion, and
developing new initiatives.
Special Events: MHC hosts a variety of
fundraising events to support our programs.
Every year community members and
donors have a great time at our music
benefits, the Harvest Breakfast, Hub Ride
for the Hungry, Share the Harvest Auction,
Hunger and Homelessness Awareness
Week, Homeward Bound and dining
benefits.
MHC Expenses 2009
The Hoosier Hills Food Bank provides over
99% of our food free or for a small shared
maintenance fee of $0.14 per pound. MHC
is the largest client of the HHFB, distributing
30% of the food bank’s food annually.
Perry Township provides our pantry facility
on an in-kind basis. In 2006, our facility was
expanded and renovated by Perry Township.
MHC’s three staff worked with a committed
crew of 140 volunteers to power our programs.

patrons and community members to give
back by helping out. In 2009 our volunteers
contributed over 10,000 hours to make our
programs successful!

MHC Program Highlights from 2009
Food Pantry Program
MHC’s food pantry is unique as it operates with a client choice model; our clients receive a bag for each person in
their household, filling those bags with items they choose from our pantry shelves. This model empowers clients
during challenging times in their lives, and it reduces waste as clients choose food they will eat. MHC’s food
pantry has a simple sign-in process, runs on the honor system, and is available to anyone who meets our
guidelines.
MHC’s food pantry served an average of 1,900 patrons each week, for a total of 98,465 bags of healthy
groceries distributed to people in need. 2009 was MHC’s busiest year to date, meeting a 14% increase in
demand for services.
The Food Pantry distributed 960,000 pounds of rescued food, an increase of 25% over 2008. This food had a
retail value of over $1.7 million, offering our clients a significant savings and making good use of food that
would have been wasted were it not for our local food rescue system.
MHC was the largest food distributor of the Hoosier Hills Food Bank, redistributing 30% of HHFB’s rescued
food product in 2009.
The Food Pantry was powered by a crew of 140 regular volunteers who collectively contributed over 190 hours
each week, or more than 10,000 hours during the year. 90% of our volunteers are also patrons.

MHC Program Highlights from 2009
Garden and Nutrition Programs
MHC’s education programs increase client well-being by sharing information about
gardening and healthy eating. Through these programs staff create hands-on learning opportunities,
printed resources and in-pantry demonstrations for our clients. MHC offers
classes such as canning, sprouting, fermenting, vegetarian cooking, bread baking, wild foraging,
healthy eating on a budget, and more. During MHC’s busy open hours volunteers
and staff prepare sample dishes, encouraging clients to try whole foods; and professionals
provide in-pantry health information.
MHC expanded the Community Gardening and Nutrition Education Programs to
meet the interest of our clients. These programs offered 30 classes, numerous printed
resources and weekly volunteer opportunities in the gardens.
MHC gardeners distributed over 5,100 plant starts and 500 packets of seeds to our
clients to grow their own backyard gardens, increasing self-reliance among community
members by passing on the life skills of organic gardening. .
MHC is a partner agency in the Plant-a-Row for the Hungry campaign, working to grow
food for those who need it most, while also advocating that other backyard gardeners
plant an extra row and donate the harvest.
MHC runs youth gardening programs in partnership with three youth agencies
(Crestmont Boys and Girls Club, Girls Inc and The Banneker Community Center).
MHC gardened with over 60 youth during the summer, teaching about compost, seed
starting, harvesting, healthy eating and more!
MHC gardeners cultivated 2,970 pounds of organic produce at 3 community garden
sites: Harmony School, Banneker Green Thumbs Garden, and Crestmont Gardens.

MHC’s new van can haul twice as much food as our
old van and helps keep the pantry fully stocked. This
van will continue to be an incredible resource for MHC
for years to come and was made possible through the
Jack Hopkins Social Service Fund, Curry Buick and
Mediaworks.

purchase new wire shelves for the Food Pantry,
dramatically increasing our shelf space.

MHC received support from Bloomington Bicycle
Club for two bike trailers to provide emission-free
transport for our garden harvests to the pantry and to
deliver groceries to home-bound clients. Trailers were
purchased locally from Bloomington Pedal Power.

In the summer of 2009 MHC lost a great leader. Libby Yarnelle was
MHC’s Director from 2003-2007 and worked so hard to make the
Cupboard what it is today. We remember her often. We celebrate all
that she created for MHC and inspired in the community, and most
of all we miss her.
