Welcome to Berkeley County 

It’s an exciting time to live and work in Berkeley County. We continue to experience signifi cant growth 

and the future of our county looks brighter than ever. Berkeley County offers a unique blend of business 

opportunities and cultural experiences, making the area a popular relocation destination for companies 

and individuals alike. Google is coming to Mt. Holly, DuPont chose Berkeley County over a number of 

international locations to build their new Kevlar® facility, and more and more businesses and industries are 

considering making Berkeley County their home. 

Berkeley County, part of the “Emerging New South”, is rapidly becoming a preferred vacation destination 

for tourists from all around the country. While tourism numbers in many areas across the United States are 

decreasing, Berkeley County continues to experience a signifi cant increase. This increase is attributed to 

our economically priced accommodations, rich culture and history and overall family friendly-environment. 

From our world-class rivers and lakes, to popular attractions such as Mepkin Abbey, Cypress Gardens 

and Old Santee Canal Park, Berkeley County offers numerous activities and adventures for groups and 

individuals of all ages. In fact, travel magazines from all over the country have been featuring Berkeley 

County as a preferred travel destination. 

From tourism to business development, the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce works hard to ensure the 

economic stability of our area. The Berkeley Chamber Board of Directors represents the working core of 

the Chamber, and is committed to meeting ambitious goals. The board is elected by the membership and is 

made up of volunteers offering their time and energy to implement programs which benefi t the community.

Getting There 

Two Interstate Highways (I-26 and I-526) and three Federal Highways (Hwy 52, 

Hwy 17A and Hwy 176) run directly through Berkeley County. South Carolina’s 

largest county, conveniently located minutes from Downtown 

Charleston, 1 1 /2 hours from Myrtle Beach and Hilton 

Head and two hours from Savannah, Georgia, 

is only miles from the Charleston International 

Airport and the infamous Port of Charleston. 

BCD RTMA Tri-County Link (RTMA) 

RTMA provides public transportation to 

rural areas. RTMA also offers contract 

services to corporations wishing to 

provide transportation as a benefi t to 

their employees. 

RTMA is equipped to furnish curb-to-curb 

service for individuals with disabilities. The 

system serves the entire tri-county area 

(Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties) 

and links with Charleston’s metropolitan transportation 

system. 

Berkeley County Airport 

A private pilot’s paradise! Our airport staff pampers pilots and 

ensures they experience true southern hospitality. The Berkeley 

County airport remains open from 8:00am to dusk 364 days out of the 

year (closed Christmas Day). Private pilots, and even a few celebrities and 

dignitaries, from all over the world take advantage of the convenience and 

ease of the Berkeley County airport. 

Lakes, Canals, Rivers and Dams 

Our elaborate and extensive waterways make it easy to travel by boat from the South 

Carolina Midlands in Columbia all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. South Carolina’s two major 

lakes (Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion) are connected by a Diversion Canal. Lake Moultrie is 

connected by the Tailrace Canal via the Pinopolis Dam locks, an engineering marvel which allows 

travelers to experience the second largest water lock in the United States, lowering boats 75 feet 

from Lake Moultrie to the Tailrace Canal. The Tailrace Canal leads directly into the headwaters of 

the Cooper River and the Atlantic Ocean. As the Cooper River’s waters turn brackish, locals regularly 

report witnessing schools of dolphin jumping while freshwater alligators sun themselves along the banks!

Berkeley County immortalizes a lifestyle most people 

thought was lost long ago. Although the county continues to 

boom economically, our people have not forgotten the true 

meaning of “Southern Hospitality”.

Don’t be surprised if people you don’t know wave to you like 

you are an old friend. Here in Berkeley County, our locals 

consider everyone a “friend”. Front porches with rocking 

chairs, lemonade and freshly brewed sweet tea do still exist! 

Neighbors don’t just know each other, they become part of

a step back into time… a time when people cared for one

Rich Culture & History 

Late 1600’s Settlers 

English and French Huguenot planters settled in our areas in 

the late 1600’s. Our ancestor’s fi erce independence, strong 

self-suffi ciency and diligent agrarian work ethic defi ned our 

region and live on in our people even today. 

Wars 

Thirty-two of the 166 Revolutionary War battle sites in 

South Carolina are located in Berkeley County. Berkeley is 

also home of the legendary “Swamp Fox”, General Francis 

Marion. Marion is known for and credited with developing 

the fi rst guerilla war tactics. He kept the British searching 

the forest and swamps for his elusive militia. It’s well worth 

a visit to Bell Island Plantation, where Marion and his wife 

Mary Esther Videou are buried. Quenby Creek, also located 

in Berkeley County, was site of the bloodiest and fi nal battle 

of the Revolutionary War. 

Berkeley County was also very active in the Civil War. 

Many young men from our county actively fought and 

served for the Confederacy. In fact, the fi rst semisubmersible 

torpedo boat, CSS Little David, was built in 

Berkeley County. The technology of this ship helped pave 

the way for advent of modern-day nuclear submarines. 

Old war remnants and treasures, including muskets, knives 

and weaponry, can still be found buried here just beneath 

the earth’s surface. 

Historical Churches 

Berkeley County is rich in history, and legends. Churches date 

back to the 1700’s and have been immaculately maintained 

so locals and visitors can step back into time. 

The St. Stephen Episcopal Church, built in the early 1700’s, 

has been preserved in its original condition. The church 

features beautiful stained glass windows and original 

woodwork throughout. 

Strawberry Chapel’s holding tombs still stand. The church is 

also the real-life setting of the infamous story of “Little Miss 

Chicken”. As legend tells it, back in the 1700’s, a teacher 

tied a young girl to one of the tombstones overnight… 

(we don’t want to spoil it for you so you will have to visit to 

catch the rest of the story!) 

When viewing the St. James Church in Goose Creek, South 

Carolina, you will be transported to the time when ladies

wore flowing gowns and men wore long tails and vests. Other 

area churches afford visitors the opportunity to experience 

the “feeling” during the time when our nation was young 

and just becoming established. 

The Biggins Church ruins are also another spectacular site. 

The Berkeley Chamber of Commerce offers a “Historic 

Church Tour” for anyone interested. 

Lights…Camera…ACTION in Berkeley County! 

Berkeley County’s beautiful landscape has become home to 

many of today’s most popular television series and motion 

pictures. Stars such as Mel Gibson, Renée Zellweger, Jude 

Law, Heath Ledger, Natalie Portman, Ryan Gosling, Nicole 

Kidman, Patrick Swayze and Kirstie Alley have all spent time in 

beautiful Berkeley County. Some of the most notable include: 

The Patriot, Cold Mountain, The Notebook, Swamp Thing, 

and the popular NBC television miniseries, North and South.

If you’re looking for the “Southern Jewel” everyone is 

talking about, you’ve fi nally found it! Berkeley County, South 

Carolina, located just minutes from Downtown Charleston 

and 1.5 hours from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is cradled 

in what is quickly becoming known as the “emerging new 

south”. 

Known for its natural beauty, scenic landscape, rich culture 

and exciting history, Berkeley County is luring more and 

more visitors each year. However, if you choose to visit, 

we must warn you….most of those who “visit for pleasure” 

actually end up falling in love with Berkeley County forever! 

Countless visitors have been so enticed by what Berkeley 

County offers that many have made the transition from 

“visitor” to “permanent resident”, and are now calling this 

beautiful area their home!

Mepkin Abbey 

One of the major draws to Berkeley County is historic Mepkin 

Abbey. On the bluffs overlooking the scenic Cooper River, 

you’ll find the lovely and serene Mepkin Abbey, home to an 

active Trappist monastery. Amongst huge live oak trees, this 

monastery is located on the land formally owned by Henry 

Laurens, a President of the Second Continental Congress. 

Henry Laurens, a true political patriot, was held prisoner 

in the Tower of London and finally released after he was 

exchanged for the infamous British General, Lord Charles 

Cornwallis. Lord Cornwallis took siege of Charleston, cutting 

of trade from the port and chasing the elusive “Swamp Fox” 

General Francis Marion. The plantation was later owned 

by publisher and philanthropist Henry R. Luce and his wife 

Clare Booth Luce. Clare Luce commissioned famous architect 

Loutrell Briggs to create the magnificent Mepkin Gardens. 

In 1988, the gardens were renovated through the efforts 

of Nancy Bryan Luce, wife of Henry Luce III and for whom 

the gardens are named. Mepkin Abbey hosts several events 

throughout the year. One of the most popular, “Nativities 

from Around the World”, is held every November and features 

50 different nativities. Mepkin Abbey’s store features the 

work of local, regional, national and international monastic 

artisans. And, don’t forget to pick up their popular, not to 

mention delicious, homemade fruit cake during the holiday 

season. Groups can visit daily to tour the grounds, enjoy the 

gardens, attend an authentic trappist monk worship service 

and take in the breathtaking beauty of Mepkin Abbey.

Another true treasure of Berkeley County is Cypress Gardens. 

Cypress Gardens features boat rides on a black water 

swamp amidst blooming azaleas, camellias and other native 

flowers and flora featured in the gardens. Cypress Gardens 

has long been a draw for groups and visitors of all ages. 

Take a serene boat ride on the genuine black water swamp, 

and then visit the Butterfly House, the Reptile Center and 

aquarium. Students and adults alike enjoy a variety of 

unique educational programs. Garden clubs, bird watchers 

and nature enthusiasts also love to come and enjoy these 

wonderful natural gardens and explore the parks vast nature 

trails. With its peaceful demeanor and beautiful backdrop, 

Cypress Gardens has also become a favorite location for 

weddings. 

Old Santee Canal Park 

Enjoy enriched educational experiences at the Old Santee 

Canal Park, 195-acres located on the site of the first true 

canal in America. The park, which sits on the historic Stony 

Landing Plantation, was an important site for trade and 

transportation since colonial times. It served as an early 

trading post for Native Americans, and, the first semisubmersible 

torpedo boat, CSS Little David, was built on these 

grounds. You will also find a beautiful 19th century plantation 

house, four miles of boardwalk which takes visitors through 

deep woods and near the Old Santee Canal, and the Canal 

bed at Biggins Swamp. Our impressive 11,000 square foot 

Interpretive Center tells the story of the engineering feat 

required to dig a canal from the South Carolina’s midlands 

to the Cooper River back in the 1800’s. The Interpretive 

Center also houses cultural and natural history exhibits, an 

interactive computer, live snake aquarium, two theaters 

and more. 

Educational programs highlight a wide range of historical 

events which took place on or around Stony Landing 

Plantation, such as children’s life, archaeology and canal 

history. Environmental programs emphasize the vast diversity 

of plant and animal life found throughout the park, including 

insects, reptiles, trees and wetlands.

Palmetto Trail 

One of only 13 cross-state trails in the United States, the 

Palmetto Trail earned the distinction of becoming federally 

designated as a Millennium Legacy Trail. The Berkeley portion 

of the trail takes nature seekers and adventurers through the 

Lake Moultrie Passage, running along the perimeter of Lake 

Moultrie, and the Swamp Fox Passage, which crosses through 

the Francis Marion National Forest. 

The Berkeley Museum 

The 5600 exhibit Berkeley Museum, located in Old Santee 

Canal Park, traces the area’s history back 12,000 years. 

From the Native American residents of the Ice Age, to the 

famed “Swamp Fox” Francis Marion’s battles during the 

American Revolution, to the planters who settled the area, 

the Berkeley Museum provides an entertaining and lively 

perspective of Berkeley County’s rich and exciting history. 

Don’t miss the Annual Antique Tractor and Engine Show in 

September. This popular event features antique tractor 

and engine exhibits, tractor-pulling competitions, lawnmower 

pulling, farm-tools and equipment auction, and an 

encampment of Civil War reenactors. Specialists in the areas 

of blacksmithing, basket weaving, chair caning, furniture 

making as well as a grist mill operation are featured in the 

Crafts of The Lowcountry exhibit at the Berkeley Museum. 

Entertainment also plays an important part for the two-day 

event, with performances featuring bluegrass, gospel and 

beach music. 

Coastal Carolina Flea Market 

Experience one of the largest flea markets on the East Coast 

with over 1000 booths spreading across 47 acres. Open every 

weekend with free admission, don’t miss one of the greatest 

opportunities to discover new treasures and buy fresh 

local produce. Stop by the flea market’s own Weekends 

Restaurant, which features southern cooking.

Known for the natural beauty of its land and water, Berkeley 

County’s rivers, streams and lakes offer superior canoeing 

and kayaking adventures. Our infamous “Berkeley Blueways” 

feature 20 canoeing and kayaking trails. These water trails 

take visitors through pristine landscapes full of wildlife. 

During blooming season, wildfl owers rich with colors of the 

rainbow line the banks. Egrets, herons, eagles, fi sh, turtles 

and alligators make these waters home. Keep an eye out to 

catch a glimpse of animals such deer, otters, squirrels, fox 

and even bobcats along the banks. 

For the high-impact adventure seeker, Berkeley County offers 

world-class water skiing, jet skiing, sailing, wind surfi ng, and 

boating on Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion. Visit the Santee 

Cooper Locks on the Cooper River, an engineering marvel 

which allows visitors to experience the second largest water 

lock in the United States, which lowers boats 75 feet from 

Lake Moultrie to the Tailrace Canal and the Cooper River. The 

Cooper River is the only known location in South Carolina to 

offer an underwater history trail. On a calm day, scuba divers 

fl ock to see the extraordinary remains of a British War Ship. 

The Cooper River, once a plantation road to Charleston, has 

also served as a port since the 1700’s. 

Experience 250,000 acres of diverse plant and animal 

communities in the Francis Marion National Forest. Each 

year, visitors fl ock to the forest to catch a rare glimpse of 

the endangered red cockaded woodpecker, amongst other 

intriguing birds such as the bald eagle and blue heron. While 

in Francis Marion National Forest, be sure to enjoy the 

numerous biking, hiking and horse trails. 

For the hunting enthusiasts, Berkeley County proves to be 

one of the most desirable locations in the nation. Deer and 

quail are popular with the locals, and don’t miss one of our 

infamous “Dove Shoots”. 

The year-round average temperature in the area is 55 

degrees. Golfers take advantage of the opportunity to play 

their favorite sport all winter long, while outdoor enthusiasts 

enjoy their passion a full twelve months out of the year.

From Berkeley County’s humble beginnings, arts and culture 

have remained a mainstay in our diverse and growing area. 

From original plays, country music, art exhibits, festivals 

and storytellers, to classical pianists, jazz, bluegrass, and 

symphony orchestras, Berkeley County offers something for 

everyone. 

Gift shops throughout the county feature works from local 

artists. The Berkeley County Arts Guild is growing rapidly 

as new artists choose to make Berkeley County their new 

home. The Berkeley County arts community continues to 

rapidly emerge.

The Family Circle Cup has been a pioneer in women’s 

professional sports, creating benchmarks that directly 

infl uenced the popularity of women’s professional tennis 

since 1973. Rich in tradition, this Premier Sony Ericsson WTA 

Tour clay court event has been highlighted with a litany of 

outstanding accomplishments and a roster of past champions 

from the highest ranks of the sport including Chris Evert, 

Martina Navratilova, Tracy Austin, Steffi Graf, Gabriela 

Sabatini, Martina Hingis, Jennifer Capriati, Justine Henin, 

Venus Williams and Serena Williams. 

Every spring, Berkeley County and Daniel Island serves as a 

backdrop to one of the richest and most traditional events 

in women’s professional tennis. The Family Circle Cup is 

more than just a tennis tournament; it’s a festival with some 

world-class tennis thrown in. To honor and commemorate 

a very important milestone in its storied legacy, the Family 

Circle Cup executed a week-long celebration to mark its 35 th 

Anniversary during the April 12-20, 2008 event. As one of 

the hottest tickets in professional sports, this historic event 

featured a host of past champions headlined by Chris Evert 

and Martina Navratilova who returned to thank the fans for 

their unwavering support and to cheer on the stars of today 

as they compete for one of the most coveted trophies on the 

WTA Tour. 

In 2001, the Family Circle Cup made a bold move to secure 

its successful future. After 28 years in Hilton Head, the 

tournament moved to its new home, the Family Circle Tennis 

Center, located on picturesque Daniel Island in Berkeley 

County. This partnership between the State of South 

Carolina, City of Charleston, Berkeley County, and Family 

Circle magazine was the fi rst of its kind in women’s tennis. 

Family Circle magazine is the fi rst title sponsor to partner 

with city and county municipalities to build a tennis facility 

of this stature. 

Owned by the City of Charleston and operated by Meredith 

Corporation, the Family Circle Tennis Center was one of 

the fi rst structures completed on Daniel Island. Beginning 

construction at the turn of the millennium, this world class 

public tennis facility has been a valuable resource for our 

county’s inhabitants since opening in April of 2001. This $15 

million dollar state-of-the-art venue not only serves as home 

for one of the most exciting events on the WTA Tour, but 

also provides residents of greater Charleston access to one 

of the fi nest tennis facilities in the southeast. Immediately 

after opening its doors to our residents, the 32-acre site 

was awarded the one of the highest accolades given by the 

United States Tennis Association (USTA), naming the Tennis 

Center a “USTA Public Tennis Facility of the Year”. 

In the hard-hitting world of men’s professional tennis, the 

Davis Cup has been the pinnacle of international team tennis 

competition for the past 105 years. In the fall of 2004, when 

the United States Davis Cup team led by Andy Roddick and 

the Bryan brothers was in need of a top notch arena to host 

a semifi nal tie match versus Belarus on their home turf, the

USTA set out to find America’s best venue to be the site of 

this historic match. Upon awarding the Family Circle Tennis 

Center with this prestigious event, three days of sold-out 

record-setting attendance and thrilling on-court action 

ensued in Charleston. America advanced to the finals with a 

decisive victory won on the back of Roddick as he won both 

of his matches and fired a 155 MPH serve that stands today 

as the fastest on record. 

After a few years of continued growth and accelerated 

maturity, the Family Circle Tennis Center began to attract an 

increasingly brighter regional and national spotlight earning 

additional impressive awards. Exuding charm and southern 

hospitality in a state well versed in tennis excellence, the 

South Carolina Tennis Association bestowed its top honor of 

“2005 Facility of the Year” upon the Tennis Center for its 

comprehensive community-based programming options. 

On the heels of these major accolades, the Family Circle 

Tennis Center could have rested on its laurels, but this 

proactive entity continued to strive for excellence. In 

recognition of the eager implementation of a host of new 

USTA programming directives aimed at growing the game of 

tennis at a grass-roots level, as well as initiating a variety of 

forward-thinking programs of its own designed to introduce 

tennis to various special populations, the Tennis Center 

was recognized on a national level by the Tennis Industry 

Association (TIA) as a “Top 50 Tennis Welcome Center” in 

both 2006 and 2007. 

Over the last eight years, the Family Circle Tennis Center 

and the facility’s showcase event, the Family Circle Cup, 

have been recognized for their role in the growth of Daniel 

Island. In July of 2006 the Family Circle Cup was mentioned 

as a top amenity and major contributor to the outstanding 

quality of life on Daniel Island in the New York Times Real 

Estate editorial section. Boasting a growing portfolio of 

esteemed awards and major sporting events, it is no surprise 

that in 2005 and 2007 Where to Retire Magazine has noted 

the Family Circle Tennis Center as a major factor in their 

selection of Daniel Island as one of “America’s Top 100 Master 

Planned Communities”. 

With a proven record of excellence, and renowned for its 

flexibility in hosting a wide variety of events, the Family 

Circle Tennis Center caught the eye of the AVP pro beach 

volleyball tour when it was looking to add a new event to 

its 18-stop tour. The Family Circle Tennis Center jumped to 

the top of the list by possessing an intimate stadium, a well 

groomed and spacious layout able to accommodate world 

class courts, and a full service event management staff with 

proven capabilities of handling all aspects of a national event. 

The AVP Charleston Open was officially born in June of 2007. 

With strong community support from thousands of fans who 

enthusiastically came out to enjoy the action combined with 

the positive response from the top athletes and US Olympic 

champions who competed here, the inaugural tournament

According to an article in the Post & Courier (December 

7, 2007), South Carolina ranks the third highest state in 

the United States with the number of teachers achieving 

National Board certifi cation by the National Board for 

Professional Teaching Standards. 20% of South Carolina’s 

Nationally Board Certifi ed teachers work in Berkeley County. 

Berkeley County’s public education system demands high 

expectations of parents, students and staff, enlists strong 

community support and offers numerous programs to fully 

prepare students for life after high school. 

The Berkeley County School System educates approximately 

27,500 students at 38 pubic schools. Seventeen new construction 

and renovation projects, funded by the 1999 school 

bond referendum, were completed within the last year. This

high school is scheduled to open in Goose Creek 

in 2008.

South Carolina, and Berkeley County, have become a “hot 

spot” for business and industry. National companies such 

as Alcoa, Nucor Steel, DuPont, and Google (voted as the #1 

company to work for in the United States) all have expanded 

their operations into Berkeley County. According to the

Dan Davis, a native of Hemingway, South Carolina, grew up in Sumter, South Carolina. 

He received his B.A. in Political Science and M.A. in Public Administration from the 

University of South Carolina. Prior to being elected Berkeley County Supervisor, 

Davis served as the Planning Director for the Pee Dee Council of Governments and 

City Administrator for the cities of Belton, SC and Hanahan, SC. 

Davis maintains an open door policy and feels it’s important to listen to and address 

the needs of Berkeley County’s citizens. Davis remains active in the community and

Our Towns 

Moncks Corner 

This colonial trading post took its name from landowner 

Thomas Monk. The town, which dates back to 1738, lies 

on the southeast corner of what was once known as Mitton 

Plantation. In the early days, Moncks Corner had four 

taverns and six stores. Planters from all over would bring 

their crops to town, sell them for cash or exchange them 

for goods, dine at one of the taverns, then return home. 

In 1856, the Northeastern Railroad came to town, laying 

its tracks over portions of the former Mitton and Fairlawn 

Plantations. Five acres were set aside to build a 

depot, which still stands today, at the center of the “new” 

Moncks Corner. 

Today, Moncks Corner has a population of over 6,000. The 

town is the county seat of Berkeley County. The town houses 

the Berkeley County Administration building. Santee Cooper 

Power has built a state-of-the-art high rise offi ce complex, 

and two of the areas largest medical conglomerates have 

also built facilities in the area. The Moncks Corner Fire 

Department recently acquired a new, state-of-the-art fi re 

engine comparable to ones found in “big” cities. Citizens 

of Moncks Corner and nearby Pinopolis enjoy year-round 

activities including boating, swimming, water skiing, hunting 

and fi shing. 

Jamestown 

This historic French Huguenot settlement on the Santee River 

was founded in 1685, although the town was not offi cially 

incorporated until 1957. The French Huguenots, known to 

be peaceful and industrious people, served God faithfully. 

They sold indigo, rice, turpentine and pitch. The region 

surrounding Jamestown later became known as French 

Santee. Jamestown prides itself on the strong Huguenot 

infl uence, faith and valor which became a rich part of the 

area’s culture. 

Now home of the infamous Hell Hole Swamp Festival, 

Jamestown residents enjoy their quaint little town. 

St. Stephen 

This quiet town, located 15 miles north of Moncks Corner, 

has a population of approximately 1,825 residents. Major 

industries, such as Albany International, Georgia Pacifi c and 

Smith Enterprises, proudly call St. Stephen their home. 

One of the most popular and infamous sites in St. Stephen is 

the St. Stephen Episcopal Church, a National Historic Landmark, 

constructed between 1767 and 1769. Revenue from 

the prosperous indigo market funded the construction of this 

historic building, which replaced a small wooden frontier 

chapel. Visitors from around the world revel in the quality 

of its beautiful masonry. William Axson, a member of the 

Wambaw Lodge of Freemasons, and Supervisors A. Howard 

and Francis Villeponteaux, inscribed their signatures on the 

east wall above the chancel window. These signatures have 

been carefully preserved and can still be viewed today. Today, 

the church has an active congregation and still conducts 

weekly worship services. 

Bonneau 

The Town of Bonneau, best known for the Bonneau Ferry, 

is home to the site of Berkeley County’s fi rst high school. 

Back in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the town landscape 

included a railroad station, a livery stable, a blacksmith 

shop, a turpentine still, a sawmill, a school, a bank and two 

cotton gins. 

Now a small family community with a population of about 

425, Bonneau lies seven miles north of Moncks Corner. This

quiet community prides itself on its variety of churches 

and denominations. The area is surrounded by the Francis 

Marion National Forest and a portion of the SC Palmetto 

Trail. This trail has become a popular walking, biking and 

camping destination for both locals and nature enthusiasts 

from around the United States. 

Goose Creek 

This historic community prides itself on retaining its small 

town character. Founded in the late 1600’s, the early city of 

Goose Creek experienced many hardships. In fact, the city 

remained virtually undeveloped after the Civil War. Then, 

after World War II, the military recognized the benefit of 

investing in Goose Creek. As the U.S. Navy, Army and Air 

Force bases began to flourish, secondary industries began to 

relocate and expand into the area. 

Today, the 30,000 citizens of Goose Creek enjoy living 

in a small community but experiencing the benefits and 

resources of a larger metropolitan area. In 2000, the Census 

reported the median household income was $45,919, higher 

than the state and national averages. Approximately 18% of 

Goose Creek households report a median income of over 

$80,000. 

Our Towns 

Prospering industries, including DuPont, Alcoa and Google, 

have prompted a rise in the demand for housing. In 2004, the 

average price of a new home in Goose Creek was $185,800. 

Hanahan 

World War II fostered the birth of the City of Hanahan. When 

the war began, the influx of military personnel contributed to 

a significant housing shortage in the area. During this time, 

the U.S. Army acquired land around Yeamans Hall Road as an 

Army base. Barracks and a hospital were soon constructed. 

At the conclusion of WWII, the federal government auctioned 

off its land as surplus property, and locals embraced the 

opportunity to invest. 

The City of Hanahan incorporated in 1973. Over the past 

decade, revitalization efforts have changed the face of 

Hanahan. Currently experiencing a population boom, this 

city of 14,000 expects to more than double its number of 

residents in the next several years. Hanahan is conveniently 

located minutes away from the Port of Charleston, and the 

surrounding cities of North Charleston and Mount Pleasant.
