2011 University of Toledo Spring Football OutlookTalented Rockets Highly Motivated toBuild On Last Year’s AchievementsToledo, OH - There was lots to like about Toledo’s2010 season. A few examples:• The Rockets won eight games, including seven ofeight Mid-American Conference contests and a nonconferencevictory over Purdue.• The Rockets improved by three wins over 2009,and by five victories over their win total in 2008.• The Rockets earned their first bowl berth since2005.And yet, UT Head Coach Tim Beckman and histeam ended the season feeling only partially satisfied.A late-season loss at Northern Illinois cost Toledo achance to play in the MAC Championship Game, whilea last-second defeat to FIU in the Little Caesars PizzaBowl left the Rockets feeling like they have somethingto prove in 2011.“We learned a lot from the loss in the bowl game andalso from our loss to Northern Illinois,” said Beckman, now entering his third season as Toledo’s head coach. “Wewere so close to achieving our goal of being in the MACChampionship Game, and then so close to achieving ourgoal of winning a bowl game.“We know we were successful last year by winningeight football games. There’s not many teams that woneight games in the regular season last year. That’s agreat accomplishment, but the bottom line is we werenot in the MAC Championship Game and we didn’t winthe bowl game. These players understand that they’veaccomplished something, but at the same time they havenot accomplished all their goals.”Besides being highly motivated, the Rockets are alsodeep, talented and experienced. All but four starters returnfrom last season’s 8-5 squad, including All-America widereceiver/kickoff returner Eric Page and four other All-MAC players. The Rockets’ offense features two 1000-yard rushers, two accomlished quarterbacks and a pair oftackles who are entering their fourth season together asstarters. The defense returns nine starters, including twoAll-MAC players and at least three others who arguablydeserved all-league recognition. True, there are questionsabout the kicking game, but in the big scheme that seemslike a minor quibble.Despite all this, Beckman knows that a lot of hard workJunior Eric Page caught 99 passes in 2010 and was the onlyplayer in the FBS to score three touchdowns on kickoffs.-continued next pageandmany unanswered questions stand between his Rocketsand an appearance in the 2011 MAC title game at Detroit’sFord Field in December. Some of those questions might be answered duringspring practice, some during training camp next August. And then next fall, the Rockets will have the chance toprove that last season’s disappointments merely set thestage for this year’s success.

The following is an overview ofthe Rockets as they head into 2011spring practice:OffenseThere is an old football adagethat says if you have two quarterbacks, you really don’t have one.Tim Beckman doesn’t buy it.You see, Beckman has twoquarterbacks. Two good quarterbacks, junior Austin Dantinand sophomore Terrance Owens.Dantin won the starting job lastyear, led the Rockets to big winsover Purdue, Western Michiganand Ohio, then went down with aseason-ending shoulder injury. Instepped Owens, a big-armed leftywho led the Midnight Blue andGold to wins in three of their finalfour regular-season games.2011 Toledo Spring OutlookSenior Adonis Thomas rushed for 1,098yards and led the MAC with 6.3 yardsper carry.Beckman won’t yet commit to a starting quarterback.Instead, just as he did a year ago, he will let the two playerscompete for the job throughout the spring and summer. It’s possible that both players will play a big role on nextyear’s team. And as for those who still think having twogood quarterbacks is a problem, Beckman respectfullydisagrees.“I don’t think that’s true in today’s game,” said Beckman.“Guys get injured. More teams are playing multiplequarterbacks. We have two quarterbacks who have provedthey can win football games. That’s a strength for thisteam.”Beckman said that Dantin, now 100 percent healed fromhis injury, may have the edge in experience and footwork.Owens, on the other hand, showed a knack for connectingon deep passes, and was a pretty nifty runner himself.Their numbers were remarkably similar last year. Dantincompleted 66.1 percent of his passes for 1,254 yardsand seven touchdowns. Owens threw for 1,244 yards and13 scores while completing 59.5 percent. Dantin rushedfor more yards (292 to 143) but Owens had more yardsper carry (3.8 to 2.8).The running back position is also loaded with talent, but the front-runner at that position is clearly established.Senior Adonis Thomas gained 1,098yards, leading the league with an averageof 6.3 yards per carry. A secondteamAll-MAC pick, Thomas seemedto get better with every game last year, gaining at least 130 yards in three ofhis last four games. Some observers feltthat by the end of the season, Thomasmay have been the best running backin the league.Pushing Thomas for playing timewill be sophomore David Fluellenand senior Morgan Williams. Fluellenlooked good as a freshman, averaging5.9 yards per carry in limited action.Williams was utilized more as a receiverin 2010 (20 receptions), but didrush for over 1,000 yards as a freshmanin 2008. Come next August, anothername could enter the picture, as well.Josh Haden, a transfer who gained479 yards at Boston College in 2008,will join the Rockets stable of runningbacks this fall. All of this has Beckman and his staff contemplatinghow to make the most of Toledo’s bounty ofquality backs.“We’ve got proven tailbacks who are all very, verygood players,” said Beckman. “We have to get two runningbacks on the football field at the same time more often nextyear.”At wide receiver, Beckman’s challenge will be to finda complement (or two) to All-American Eric Page. Page, ajunior, caught 99 passes and hauled in eight TD receptionsin 2010. However, the next highest reception total at widereceiver was 18 by Kenny Stafford. Clearly, someonemust step forward this fall. Beckman is confident that willhappen.“We have a lot of young guys who are continuing toget better,” sadi Beckman. “We have Bernard Reedy, JamesGreen and Julian Bellinger who all got some experiencelast year. Cassius McDowell didn’t play last year becauseof a knee injury. He’ll be back as a redshirt freshman thisfall. And we have some incoming receivers who couldhelp us right away. Cordale Scott sat out last year aftertransferring from Illinois. He’s a bigger receiver. But rightnow our receivers are Eric Page, Kenny Stafford and TimCortazzo, with Bernard Reedy not far behind because he’s

2011 Toledo Spring Outlookthe fastest player on our football team.”Toledo’s offensive line is senior-heavy, led by twofour-year starters at tackle, Mike VanDerMeulen and JohnMorookian, as well as returning left guard PhillipkeithManley. Sophomore Zac Kerin looks to be the leadingcandidate thus far for the center position vacated by fourstarterKevin Kowalski. The right guard spot is open, too, with junior A.J. Lindemann penciled in as a possiblesolution there. Others in the mix for playing time includea trio of redshirt freshmen: Josh Hendershot, Erik Carlsonand Greg Mancz.DefenseNo phase of Toledo’s game improved more than itsdefense. The Rockets went from allowing 37.7 points pergame in 2009 to 28.5 last year. Forcedturnovers increased from 21 two yearsago to 34 last year. Beckman is countingon his defense to improve even more thisfall. And he may have the personnel tomake that happen. The Rockets return accomplishedplayer in all areas of the defense. Upfront, junior All-MAC defensive endT.J. Fatinikun is joined by senior defensivetackles Malcolm Riley and JohnnieRoberts. At inside linebacker, juniorDan Molls, another All-MAC selection, was second in the league in tackles ayear ago. At outside linebacker, seniorIsaiah Ballard is a solid All-MAC candidate. In the secondary, Toledo returnsfour starters, including sixth-year seniorDesmond Marrow, one of the leaders oflast year’s resurgence.Fatinikun, Riley and Roberts madeup three-fourths of a Toledo defensiveline that combined for 14 sacks and 32 tackles for loss in2010. Fatinikun put up the biggest numbers (51 tackles,13.0 TFL, four forced fumbles), but Riley was also a bigfactor (44 tackles, 10.0 TFL, 5.5 sacks).Beckman has a solid list of candidates to fill the onevacant spot at defensive end, including Riley, who hasthe athletic ability to play either end or tackle. Some ofthe other names battling for the defensive end positionare sophomores Christian Smith, Ben Pike and JayroneJunior linebacker Dan Mollswas second in the MAC with143 tackles in 2010.Elliott; junior Hank Keighley, who played tight end in2010; and senior Damien McIntosh.Players battling for a spot in the rotation at tackleinclude senior Jonathan Lamb, sophomore Elijah Jones, juniors Danny Farr and Phil Lewis, and redshirt freshmanZac Rosenbauer.Additionally, Beckman does not rule out playing atrue freshman or two next fall. So all in all, there is thepotential for a defense that could go two deep across theline, a luxury UT hasn’t had since its great defense of2000.The Rockets do have a hole to fill at inside linebacker.Archie Donald led the Rockets in tackles in each of the lastthree seasons, the first player in UT history to do so. ButDonald’s partner, junior Dan Molls, returns and could bea leader of the defense. Molls was consistently excellentin 2010, ranking second in the league intackles behind Donald with 143. Beckmanhas the spring and summer practiceseasons to determine who will be liningup next to Molls.“Danny Molls is an old-time player,”said Beckman. “Doesn’t say a word outthere, but he loves the game, loves studyingthe game, doing everything he can to makehis team better.“But we need to replace ArchieDonald, who led us in tackles for threestraight years. It’s going to be a war, agreat competition. We’ve got some playersthat nobody knows much about. We’vegot a transfer in from Oklahoma State,(sophomore) Jordan Barnes. We’ve got(senior) Terrell Anderson, (junior) RobertBell, (redshirt freshman) Ray Bush and(redshirt freshman) Dawalyn Harper. Wecould also move (senior) Bobo Ranciferinside if we have to. He’s big enough to play inside.”If Rancifer does not move to inside linebacker, he willbattle senior Isaiah Ballard for playing time at the star(outside linebacker) position. A year ago, Ballard steppedin at the star position for Barry Church, now with the DallasCowboys. Ballard was solid, making 83 tackles and pickingoff two passes.-continued next page-

2011 Toledo Spring Outlook-continued from previous page-It’s good news, bad news in Toledo’s secondary. Thegood news is the return of senior cornerback DesmondMarrow, who was granted a sixth year of eligibility by theNCAA due to missing two seasons to injury. The bad newsis the possible loss of junior safety Jermaine Robinson, whowill miss spring ball as he works to recover from off-seasonsurgery on his Achilles tendon.Marrow, a big corner at 6-3, 204 pounds, is a safe betto secure one of the starting spots. After nearly two yearsoff due to injury, Marrow came back to make 72 tacklesand share the team lead with three interceptions in 2010.The other corner position could be a battle betweenlast year’s starter, senior Taikwon Paige, or the starterfrom 2009, junior Byron Best. Also in consideration arefreshman grayshirts Keith Suggs and John James, as wellas a talented corps of true freshmen joining the team nextsummer. If Robinson isn’t back in the lineup by next fall, seniorDiauntae Morrow (40 tackles, two interceptions in 2010)may have to step in and be the starting srong safety. At freesafety, senior Mark Singer (73 tackles, two interceptions)is a two-year starter. Sophomore Ross Madison and seniorAnthony Washington will also be battling for playing timein the secondary.Special TeamsSpecial teams both helped and hurt the Rockets’ causein 2010. The kickoff return team, led by All-American EricPage, was one of the most productive in the country. Pageaveraged 31.1 yards per return (third in the country) andwas the only player in the FBS to return three kickoffsfor touchdowns.Other areas need some work, however. The puntcoverage team was last in the MAC (31.7 net average). The punt return team ranked 11th in the MAC, averagingjust 4.3 yards per return. On kickoffs, Toledo averagedjust 58.0 yards per kick, meaning on average the Rockets’opponents received the kickoff on their 22-yard line. UTalso was 12th in the league in field-goal percentage (6-of-14 field goals made). But help is on the way.“We have a freshman placekicker, J.D. Detmer, comingin next year. We’re very excited about him,” said Beckman.“Unfortunately, both of our returning kickers for this spring,Ryan Casano and Andrew Elchert, are injured right nowand can’t kick. So (senior punter) Bill Claus and (redshirtfreshman) Clay Simpkins will battle for the kicking job forus this spring. Claus and (sophomore) Vince Penza willbattle at the punting position for next fall.”Beckman indicated that Page will continue toreturn kickoffs and punts, though there will be room forcompetition at both positions.ScheduleThe Rockets’ 2011 slate includes two games againsttop-10 teams from 2010, five teams that made bowl gameslast year and one school that made the Football ChampionshipSeries (FCS) playoffs. The first five games in the Rockets’ schedule willbe especially challenging. UT opens up its season at theGlass Bowl on Thursday, Sept. 1 against New Hampshire,a team that went 8-5 and made it to the secondround of the FCS playoffs. The opener is followed byback-to-back games against top-10 teams from 2010: atNo. 5 Ohio State on Sept. 10 and a home game vs. No. 7Boise State on Sept 17. UT then hits the road for gamesat Syracuse (8-5 in 2010) and Temple (8-4).“We play a tough schedule, but that’s nothing new,”said head coach Tim Beckman. “All of our first five opponentswon at least eight games in 2010. New Hampshirewas an FCS playoff team, and the next three allwent to bowl games. The fifth team, Temple, won eightgames and should have been in a bowl game. Ohio Stateand Boise State are teams that probably will be in thetop 10 in the national rankings when we play them. Ourplayers are excited for the challenge. They understandthat the most important game of the season is the nextgame. Right now that’s New Hampshire on Sept. 1.”The Boise State (12-1 in 2010) game could featurethe highest ranked team ever to play in the Glass Bowl.Going into this season, the highest ranked opponent wasNo. 9 Pittsburgh in 2003, a team the Rockets defeated,35-31, behind the heroics of current NFL players BruceGradkowski and Lance Moore.Toledo’s four Mid-American Conference homegames are against Eastern Michigan (Homecoming onOct. 8), defending MAC champion Miami (Oct. 22), defendingMAC West champion Northern Illinois (Nov. 1)and Western Michigan (Nov. 8). The MAC road contestsare at Temple (Oct. 1), Bowling Green (Oct. 15), CentralMichigan (Nov. 18) and Ball State (Nov. 25).

HIS OWN PAGE IN THE RECORDBOOKIn just two seasons, Eric Page hasmade quite an impact on the Toledorecord book.Page’s 99 receptions last seasonranks second all-time behind LanceMoore’s 103 catches in 2004, while his1,105 receiving yards ranks fifth. He isin sixth place in school history in careerreceptions (181) and fourth in pass receptionyardage (2,264 yards).Among kickoff returners, Pageranks first in both career (28.9) andseason average (31.1 in 2010).LIKE HORNUNG, PAGE DOES ITALLEric Page was on the “Watch List”for the Paul Hornung Award as the nation’smost versatile player last season, and it’s no wonder.Page, who stands just 5-10, 180pounds, was seventh in the nation inreceptions (7.6/game), and 22nd in thecountry in receiving yards (85.0/game).He led the MAC and was third in thecountry in kickoff returns (31.1 avg.),and led the league and was 12th in thenation in all-purpse yards (156.5). Pagealso returns punts and can throw the ballif needed. A quarterback in high school,Page was 3-of-4 with three TD throwson trick plays.Page was a Hornung “Player of theWeek” for his performance in a 42-31win over CMU on Nov. 26. He scoredfive touchdowns that day, two by reception, two by kickoff returns and one bypassing.LOOKING GOOD, ADONISAdonis Thomas started his juniorseason as a backup and ended it as asecond-team All-MAC selection. Hisstats suggest he may have been worthyof first-team status.Thomas moved into the No. 1 spot atrunning back in the second game of theseason, but it took him awhile to makea major impact. Fourteenof the Rockets’ new players are ranked aseither three-star or four-star recruits.UT ASSISTANT COACHES NAMEDTOP RECRUITERSSigning the top recruiting class inthe Mid-American Conference in backto-backyears has not gone unnoticed asToledo assistant coaches Matt Campbelland Jason Candle have received accoladesfo their recruiting prowess.Campbell was named a “top recruiter”by Rivals.com. Q & A With Tim BeckmanWhat do you think of yourteam as you enter the springpractice season?Beckman: I think this team iseager. We’ve had exceptionalwinter workouts. They’vebeen very spirited, veryaggressive, very competitive. Most workouts have a lullsomewhere. Not this winter. Not at all. The word for thespring is something we alwaystalk about: competition.Do you have a sense thatthis team has something toprove after the (34-32) lossto FIU in the Little CaesarsPizza Bowl?Beckman: We learned a lotfrom the loss in the bowlgame and also our loss toNorthern Illinois. We wereso close to achieving ourgoal of being in the MACChampionship Game, and then so close to achieving ourgoal of winning a bowl game. I think the attitude in ouroff-season workouts has something to do with those twolosses. How do you use those losses as motivation?Beckman: I don’t think you have to. It’s just there. They know they were successful last year by winningeight football games. There’s not many teams that woneight games in the regular season last year. That’s agreat accomplishment, but the bottom line is we werenot in the MAC Championship Game and we didn’t winthe bowl game. These players understand that they’veaccomplished something, but at the same time they havenot accomplished all their goals. What do you see as the team’s strengths and possibleareas of concern?Beckman: We have a lot ofguys coming back with playingexperience, which wasn’t thecase the two previous years. There are a lot of guys whoare in their second or thirdyear in this system. Not justplaying football, playing inthis system. There’s a bigdifference. I still think weare not where we need to be,though. We didn’t reach allour goals last year. We have toget better as a football team.Special teams play is an areawe have got to strive to getbetter. The kicking game wasour biggest Achilles heal lastyear. Offensively, we haveto throw the ball better andcontinue to run the ball theway we ran it toward the endof the season. Defensively,we stopped the run very well, but we didn’t stop the passwell enough. We’ve talked before about how you organize yourteam into eight teams that compete with each otherin the spring. Have you changed anything for thisspring?Beckman: That’s still the same. The competitions arestill the same. Something we’ve added are leadershiplunches. We sit down with certain players and talkabout what leadership means to them. We’ve also addedsome media interview practice sessions for the players. One thing about a winning football team is that as youget more notoriety, you’re asked to do more things. Sowe’re working with our players, helping them learn howto be more comfortable speaking in front of audiences, whether it’s the media or whoever it is. We’re still doingour Friday community service in February. We’ve uppedthe minimum hours of community service from two tothree for each player. It’s all part of our philosophy ofdeveloping young men, not just football players.

Q & A With Tim BeckmanA big change from your first year and part of yoursecond year has been the addition of the FettermanTraining Center. What is your perspective on theimportance of an indoor facility now that you’ve beenusing it for a year?Beckman: This is the time of year that having an indoorfacility is so big, when you are fine-tuning your skills inthe off-season. We’ve also gone to a morning workoutschedule, with everything happening from 6:00 to 11:00in the morning. Well, the weather is usually quite a bitcolder in the morning in March and April, so I think wewill be practicing in Fetterman more this year than lastyear. So I find it hard to see how anyone in the northernpart of the country can survive without an indoor facility. And I think ours is as good as any in the country. How are the players enjoying getting up earlyand working out in the morning instead of theafternoon?Beckman: Well, we did a few early workouts last yearso it’s not completely new. But I think they’ve enjoyed itmore. They know that by 10 or 11 o’clock we’re eatingbrunch together and then they are done with football forthe day and they can focus on academics. Now let’s talk about what to expect on the field thisspring. You had two quarterbacks who had successat the position last year, Austin Dantin and TerranceOwens. Who is going to be the starting quarterbacknext fall?Beckman: That’s going to be an interesting situation. We will list them both at No. 1 on our depth chart andlet them compete for the position. Austin Dantin wasour starting quarterback when he got hurt and I don’tbelieve players should lose their positions because ofan injury. Now, Terrance Owens had a remarkable fivegames at the end of the season, so he definitely has theopportunity to be our starter. There’s going to be a lotof competition at quarterback, no doubt about it. We’veactually got four guys who are capable of playing thatposition. (Junior) David Pasquale has the capabilities ofbeing a good quarterback. Nobody knows about (redshirtfreshman) Dwight Macon, but he has the capability ofbeing a good quarterback. Depth-wise, we’re probablyas good as we’ve ever been at quarterback. We mayplay different quarterbacks for different situations andin different packages. You see more and more of thataround the country.Terrance finished the season so strongly that somefans may have forgotten how successful Austin wasearlier in the season.Beckman: Austin won seven football games for us overtwo seasons. He played very well for us last year. He hadan outstanding game against Purdue. He really was theMVP of that game. What do you think of the theory that if you have twoquarterbacks, then you really don’t even have one?Beckman: I don’t think that’s true in today’s game. Guysget injured. More teams are playing multiple quarterbacks. We have two quarterbacks who have proved they can winfootball games. That’s a strength for this team.Does having two quarterbacks make it harder foropposing defenses to prepare their game plan?Beckman: I think so because they are two different kindsof quarterbacks. Terrance is more of an arm guy whileAustin is more of leg guy. They are both winners andmanage the offense well. Austin has had a little bit of anexperience advantage because he played as freshman, but T.O. gained a lot of experience last year. They arevery close in terms of overall ability. We’ll just have tosee how they do in the 15 spring practices and then againin August.Austin missed the second half of the season due to ashoulder injury? Is he 100 percent?Beckman: Yes. Austin maybe could have played in thebowl game if we needed him, but we did not want to rushhim back in until we felt he was fully recovered.Sticking with the offense, you have three experiencedrunning backs, including senior Adonis Thomas, whowas arguably the best running back in the league by

the end of the season. You also havesophomore David Fluellen, whowas effective last year, and seniorMorgan Williams, who gained1,000 yards as a freshman. How doyou see the running back positionshaping up?Beckman: We’ve got three proventailbacks who are all very, very goodplayers. Winter workouts for all threeof them have been spectacular. I don’tthink anyone has beaten Adonis is anyof the competitions this winter. Speeddrills, change of direction, wrestling, anything. Morganhas had to go twice in most of the competitions becausehis team doesn’t have enough guys due to injuries. He has shown incredible durability. And Flu has beenoutstanding, too. We have three very capable backs. Wehave to get two running backs on the football field at thesame time more often next year.Adonis had a breakout year in 2010. What makes himso good?Beckman: Adonis is durable, he’s got good speed, he canrun north and south and he can make people miss. He’sa great open-field runner. But what separates him a littlebit from our other two backs is his hands. He’s really agreat receiver.Q & A With Tim BeckmanHow about at the right guardspot vacated by Nate Cole?Beckman: (Redshirt freshman)Greg Mancz, (junior) A.J.Linderman and (redshirtfreshman) Josh Hendershotare all names you might notbe familiar with but will becompeting for positions on theoffensive line. A.J. Lindemanhas had as good an off-seasonas anyone. Right now it lookslike A.J and Greg Mancz will bebattling at that right guard spot this spring. The other three offensive line spots will be mannedby experienced seniors. So overall, would you say theoffensive line will be a strength for the team?Beckman: Yes, I think so. Both of our tackles, MikeVanDerMeulen and John Morookian, are four-yearstarters. Not many teams can say they’ve had the samestarters at the tackle sports for four consecutive years. And Phillip Manley stepped in as a starter at left guardlast year and did a nice job for us.At receiver the conversation has to begin and endwith All-American Eric Page. How important is heto this team? You had a solid offensive line last year but you arelosing two seniors from that crew, most notably centerKevin Kowalski. Do you have someone penciled in atcenter?Beckman: Right now it’s (sophomore) Zac Kerin.(Redshirt freshman) Jeff Myers and (sophomore) ErikCarlson can also play center for us. So we’ve got threeguys who are capable of playing that position. Center isan important position because he’s calling everythingfor the rest of the line. You’ve got to be a student of thegame to play center. You’ve got to understand the game. That’s what Kevin gave us, and that’s what Zac will haveto do for us.Beckman: He’s as important to this team as anybodyon our roster. He’s had two great years, but he can stillimprove his game. He can be a better blocker, for example. But he understands the game as well as anybody I’ve everbeen around. He’s always aware of what coverages teamsare playing, how they are trying to cover him, that sort ofthing. That’s why he’s so good. He knows how to attackdefenses. Eric is not a loud leader; he doesn’t say much. But he leads by example. He works as hard as anybody. He dominates our individual workout drills. And he hasn’tlet the attention he’s received go to his head. He reallydoesn’t like all the attention focused on himself. He’s ateam player all the way. All the individual awards he’sreceived, he’s put in our team trophy case.

Q & A With Tim BeckmanEric had 99 receptions last year and your next highestwide receiver had 18. What can you do to get morebalance at receiver?Beckman: Well, we have a lot of young guys who arecontinuing to get better. We were so young at that positionlast year, other than Kenny Stafford and Tim Cortazzo, but they hadn’t played a whole lot. We have BernardReedy, James Green and Julian Bellinger who all got someexperience last year. Cassius McDowell didn’t play lastyear because of knee injury. He’ll be back as a redshirtfreshman this fall. And we have some incoming receiverswho could help us right away. Cordale Scott sat out lastyear after transferring from Illinois. He’s a bigger receiver. But right now our receivers are Eric Page, Kenny Staffordand Tim Cortazzo, with Bernard Reedy not far behindbecause he’s the fastest player on our football team.Could some of that balance in the passing game comefrom the tight end spot?Beckman: We’ve got some players at tight end who couldhelp us. Danny Noble is a senior who caught 18 passeslast year. He’s a capable player, very athletic. We needa big year from him. He needs to improve as a blocker. He’s backed up by another senior, Jerome Jones. We’vealso got (redshirt freshman) Gerard Atkins and (incomingjunior college transfer) Colby Kratch, so we’ll have a lotof competition there. Now to the defense. Let’s start with the defensive line. You’re losing a couple of guys but overall you arelooking strong there.Beckman: We do have depth. Inside, we have twoseniors, Malcolm Riley and Johnie Roberts. Malcolm’sa leader. He really came into his own last year. Jon Lambis another senior who is good enough to play so that wecould kick Malcolm out to a defensive end if we have to.And (sophomore) Elijah Jones will be backing up Johnie.Elijah is one of the strongest players on our team, andhe runs well. He’s getting better all the time. And thenwe have (junior) Danny Farr, (junior college transfer)Phil Lewis and (redshirt freshmen) Zac Rosenbauer. Sowe’ve got some depth at tackle that we’ve never hadbefore. At defensive end, we’ve got an All-MAC playerin (junior) T.J. Fatinikun. T.J. is a very active footballplayer with great instincts as a pass rusher. He’s backedup by (sophomore) Jayrone Elliott and (senior) DamienMcIntosh. At the other side, we’re losing Alex Johnsonand Doug Westbrook. We have to find a replacementthere. (Sophomore) Christian Smith will be competingfor that spot. (Junior) Hank Keighley, who has beenplaying tight end, will move back to defensive end thisspring. (Sophomore) Ben Pike is another player we’ll belooking at.How are you set at inside linebacker?Beckman: We’ve got an All-MAC player in (junior)Danny Molls at one linebacker spot. He’s an old-timeplayer. Doesn’t say a word out there, but he loves thegame, loves studying the game, doing everything he canto make his team better. But we need to replace ArchieDonald, who led us in tackles for three straight years. It’s going to be a war, a great competition. We’ve gotsome players that nobody knows much about. We’ve gota transfer in from Oklahoma State, (sophomore) JordanBarnes. We’ve got (senior) Terrell Anderson, (junior)Robert Bell, (redshirt freshman) Ray Bush and (redshirtfreshman) Dawalyn Harper. We could also move BoboRancifer inside if we have to. He’s big enough to playinside. In addition to Rancifer, you also have Isaiah Ballardreturning at your star (outside linebacker) position. That’s got to be a plus.Beckman: Isaiah Ballard is a big key for us. When heplayed up to his potential last year, he was as good asanybody in our conference. He’s got to play with greatfocus and passion every time he steps out on the field. Now to the secondary. You’ve got to be thrilled thatsenior cornerback Desmond Marrow was granted anextra year of eligibility by the NCAA.Beckman: He’s our best recruit (laughs). Desmond is agreat kid who has been very successful for us. It’s greatto have him back. He brings us leadership. Consideringthe injury he had (knee injury in 2008, sat out all of 2009)he had a great year, an unexpected year. Now we expect

igger and better things from him.How are your other cornerbacks looking?Beckman: We have more quality depth than at anytime since I’ve been here. (Senior) Taikwon Paige is thereturning starter, though he has been in and out of winterworkouts due to some nagging injuries. (Junior) ByronBest had as good a winter workout season as anybody. We’ve got some new players and some grayshirts thatcould be factors in the competition. Keith Suggs andJohn James are two players who can run and have hadoutstanding winters. And we have some freshmen comingin that might compete for playing time.At safety, junior strong safety Jermaine Robinsonsuffered an Achilles tendon injury in the bowl game. What’s his status?Q & A With Tim Beckmanreturned punts without much success last year. Howcome?Beckman: We’ve got to give Eric more room tomaneuver. He barely touched the ball and then he hadtacklers on him. Punt return is different from kickoffreturn. The tacklers are on you so much quicker. We justhave to get better. Is there any thought of lessening Eric’s load and takinghim off punt returns?Beckman: No. He wants to play special teams. He wantsto be out there. He would be crushed if we took him out. We’ve got to let him do what he does. You have a veteran team, and that’s a good thingconsidering your schedule.Beckman: Jermaine had off-season surgery, and isworking at rehabilitating his injury. He will not play thisspring, but he’s working hard and will try to get backon the field in August. So it’s important for our othersafeties to step up. Mark Singer is a senior and a returningstarter at free safety. He’s been a very good player forus. (Senior) Diauntae Morrow gained a lot of experiencebacking up Jermaine last year after transferring fromIowa. (Sophomore) Ross Madison has had great winterworkouts. And (senior) Anthony Washington is back forus, as well. You’ve mentioned that special teams is an area ofconcern. How are you addressing those concerns?Beckman: We have a freshman placekicker, J.D. Detmer, coming in next year. We’re very excited about him.Unfortunately, for this spring both of our kickers, RyanCasano and Andrew Elchert, are injured right now andcan’t kick. So (Senior punter) Bill Claus and (redshirtfreshman) Clay Simpkins will do the kicking for us thisspring. Claus and (sophomore) Vince Penza will battleat the punting position for next fall. You can’t argue with the success of your kickoffreturns last year. Eric Page averaged over 31 yardsa return and scored three touchdowns. But he alsoBeckman: We play a tough schedule, but that’s nothingnew. All of our first five opponents won at least eightgames in 2010. New Hampshire was an FCS playoff team, and the next three all went to bowl games. The fifth team,Temple, won eight games and should have been in a bowlgame. Ohio State and Boise State are teams that probablywill be in the top 10 in the national rankings when weplay them. So it’s a tough schedule, but our players areexcited for the challenge. How do you prepare your team for such a toughschedule?Beckman: Each week in the off-season, we focus on oneteam. Starting in January, we spend one week on eachopponent. We study them, we review (last year’s) game,we put up their depth chart in the locker room and so on.Then in the spring, each Friday we review one quarterof last year’s game with that team down south (BowlingGreen). We want to make sure that game stands out, firstand foremost. And then in August, we get into our regularpreparation routine when the most important game of theseason is the next game. And that is New Hampshire onSept. 1.

Head Coach Tim BeckmanThe Rockets’ Leader Was Born to CoachFootball is not a way of life for Tim Beckman. It ishis life.Practically since the day he was born, Beckman haseither been playing or coaching football. As the son ofa football coach, Beckman received an early educationin all aspects of the sport. He never seriously consideredanything other than coaching as his chosen profession.Beckman, 46, likes to say he has 46 years ofcoaching experience. It’s an exaggeration, but not bymuch. His father, Dave Beckman, coached on the high school, collegiateand professional levels for years. As aresult, Beckman was exposed to someof the best coaches in the country onall levels.“I’ve been around football andfootball coaches all my life,” saidBeckman. “I was born with a football. My dad coached high school ball andup to college ball and the pros, so I’vehad a chance to see it all.”Beckman played college footballTim Beckman (left) poses with hisfather, Dave, and younger brotherTed on the practice field at the Universityof Evansville.at the University of Findlay under Dick Strahm, thenbegan his climb up the coaching ladder with a graduateassistant’s position under Pat Dye at Auburn in 1988.Since then, Beckman has worked with many greatcoaches, including Urban Meyer, Jim Tressel and MikeGundy.“I’m blessed that I’ve been able to learn fromcoaches like these,” said Beckman. “I just love football. Ilove being around it. It’s an important part of my life.”Following the “Plan” to SuccessNow entering his third season asthe head coach at UT, Beckman hastaken many elements of what he haslearned over the years to create hisown coaching ethos he likes to call“The Plan.” That plan appears to be onschedule, if not ahead of it, as Beckmanled his Rockets to an 8-5 record in 2010and a berth in the Little Caesars PizzaBowl at Ford Field in Detroit.“We’ve talked about it since the

Head Coach Tim Beckmanday we arrived here two years ago,” said Beckman. “Ourplayers have bought into the plan, done all the right thingson the field and off. Now you are seeing the results.”Inheriting a team that finished 3-9 in 2008, Beckmanled the Rockets to a 5-7 finish in his rookie campaign, aseason that had the excitement of a 54-38 victory overColorado, but the disappointment of losing four-yearstarting quarterback Aaron Opelt to injury.Coming into 2010, Beckman’s squad lost numerouskey senior starters, including NFL players Barry Church(Dallas) and Stephen Williams (Arizona), and lackedexperience in many key areas. Nevertheless, the Rocketssurprised many observers by winning eight games (7-1in Mid-American Conference play), UT’s first winningseason and bowl berth since 2005.The future looks even brighter. Beckman’s last tworecruiting classes were ranked No. 1 in the Mid-AmericanConference by numerous recruiting services. And the2011 Rocket squad returns 18 starters from a year agoand looks primed for another MAC title run.Beckman Becomes a RocketBeckman became the 25th head football coach inUT history in December of 2008 and immediately begantransforming the program. He instilled a new enthusiasmand intensity that inspired players and Rocket fans alike. The Rockets improved by two wins and in most importantstatistical categories over the previous season. But moreimportantly, Beckman laid a solid foundation that putsToledo in the position to be a dominant program in theMid-American Conference for years to come.Beckman’s first task as head coach was tosimultaneously assemble a coaching staff and a recruitingclass. Within days of his hire, he had a core of coachestogether and out on the road in an all-out effort to sign atop-notch group of recruits. Starting with just two verbalcommitments from the fall, Beckman and his staff added16 more recruits to give the Rockets a very respectablerecruiting class of 18 signees. Many of the players fromthat first recruiting class make up the core of the Rockets’current starting lineup.Beckman’s other challenge was to begin to changethe attitude and habits of the current Rockets. He startedby instilling firm expectations for his players, whether inoff-season training, in the class room or in the community. For example, Beckman requires his players to sit in thefirst two rows in their classes. He also requires playersto make personal contact with each of their instructorsoutside of the class room at least once at the beginningof the semester. Beckman also began a program ofcommunity service in which the Rockets are involvedin volunteer activities on Fridays during the off-season.As part of his plan to increase competitiveness andteam-building, Beckman broke his squad up into eight“teams,” making them compete in everything during theoff-season—in the weight room, in the classroom, duringdrills, even during fun social activities. The first-placeteam was rewarded each week, while the eighth-placeteam had to run drills at 4:00 a.m.“It’s constant competition,” said Beckman said ofhis off-season philosophy. “Peer pressure comes into play.Players aren’t happy if they lose because their teammateBeckman is known for his passion for the game and hiscompetitive nature. “We will compete in everything wedo,” he said.

was late for class.”Beckman’s efforts to change the mentality of theprogram paid immediate dividends in the class room.In his first semester overseeing the program, the team’scombined semester GPA rose from 2.370 to 2.922, anaverage increase of more than half a grade per player.UT’s team GPA has stayed in the 2.9 range ever since. Also, the team’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) rose to a934, the highest in the program’s history and the first timeabove the NCAA’s “cut point” of 925. Likewise, UT’sAPR has stayed above925 in every year sinceBeckman’s arrival.2009: Laying theFoundation for theFutureBeckman’s firstseason as head coach sawthe Rockets improve bytwo wins and decisivelydefeat a Big 12 school.More importantly, perhaps, was the unquestionablefeeling among the teamand its fans that theRockets were back on thepath to success.Despite losing four-year starting quarterback AaronOpelt to injury midway through the season, the Rocketsimproved from three wins in 2008 to five wins in 2009,the third-best improvement in the MAC. Toledo’sbiggest victory was a nationally televised 54-38 win overColorado in the Glass Bowl. The Rockets also defeateddefending MAC champion Ball State, as well as NorthernIllinois, a team that earned a berth in the InternationalBowl. The foundation for Toledo’s future was furthersolidified by two developments. First, on Signing Dayin February, both Rivals.com and Scout.com rankedToledo’s 2010 recruiting class as No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference.Just three days later, the Fetterman Training Centerofficially opened, giving the Rockets one of the finestindoor facilities in the country.“When you walk in here the first thing you have toHead Coach Tim Beckmansay is, ‘Wow.’ I’ve seen a lot of indoor facilities in mylife, but this is one of the best,” said Beckman. “Whenwe bring our recruits into this building, it tells them thatthis University is committed to our athletic programs, and has a vision for excellence.”2010: The Rockets Go BowlingTo the casual observer, the Rockets faced arebuilding year in 2010. UT lost 11 senior starters from2009, including a four-year starter at quarterback, an All-MAC running back and twoAll-MAC players currentlyin the NFL.But Beckman and histeam never saw it that way.Even though the Rocketswere young and were facinga treacherous schedule,Beckman felt his team wouldthrive in Year Two of histenure as UT’s leader. And thrive they did, going8-5 and earning the team’sfirst bowl bid since 2005. TheBeckman speaking at the 2010 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl eight victories represented aKickoff Luncheon.three-win improvement over2009, and a five-win increasefrom 2008’s 3-9 season, the year before Beckman arrivedin Toledo. The Rockets also went 7-1 in league play, comingup one win short of a MAC West Division title. Of UT’sfive losses, four came to teams playing in bowl games.Toledo’s achievement is even more impressive whenone considers the challenge of the Rockets’ schedule, especially at the start of the season. Some pundits lookedat the slate and wondered if Toledo might start the season0-6. The first six games consisted of non-conferencebattles with Arizona, Purdue, Boise State and Wyoming,as well as conference road contests at Ohio and WesternMichigan. But following a season-opening loss to Arizona, theRockets won back-to-back MAC road games at Ohioand Western Michigan, followed by a convincing 31-20victory at Purdue, a feat that sealed Toledo’s status as ateam to be reckoned with. And though the Rockets werethen humbled by losses at home to Wyoming and at Boise

State, they bounced right back with three consecutiveleague victories over Kent State, Ball State and EasternMichigan. The wins over Kent State and Ball State werenotable for their comebacks. Toledo trailed the GoldenFlashes at halftime, 21-7, before storming back to a34-21 triumph, and recovered from a 17-0 deficit to theCardinals to win, 31-24.The 42-7 victory overEastern Michigan came witha price, however, the lossof Dantin for the season. However, redshirt freshmanquarterback Terrance Owensstepped in and led Toledo tovictories over EMU, BowlingGreen and in the regularseasonfinale against CentralMichigan. Owens finished theseason with his best game, throwing for 304 yards andthree TDs in a 42-31 win overCMU. But the biggest storyof that game was sophomoreEric Page, who accountedfor five touchdowns—twoby receiving, two on kickoffreturns and one passing.Toledo was rewarded for its outstanding seasonwith an invtiation to play Florida International in theLittle Caesars Pizza Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit. TheRockets held a 24-7 lead in the third quarter before fallingbehind, 31-24. A last-minute touchdown by Owens anda two-point conversion put UT up, 32-31, with just overa minute to play. Unfortunately, FIU connected on a34-yard field goal with no time on the clock to claim a34-32 victory.21 Years of Experience as an AssistantBefore becoming UT’s head coach, Beckman had21 years of experience as an assistant coach, mostly withwinning teams. He has been a part of teams that made thetop 25 in each of his final seven seasons as an assistant.Beckman served as the defensive coordinator atOklahoma State (2007-08); the cornerbacks coach atOhio State (2005-06); the defensive coordinator/assistanthead coach at Bowling Green (1998-2004); the defensivecoordinator at Elon (1996-97); the secondary coach/Head Coach Tim Beckmanrecruiting coordinator at Western Carolina (1990-95);and as a graduate assistant at Auburn (1988-89).Beckman’s two seasons as the defensive coordinatorat Oklahoma State were highly successful considering theultra-competitive nature of the Big 12. During Beckman’stime in Stillwater, the Cowboys posted a 16-10 record, including a 9-4 mark in 2008. Oklahoma State ranked ashigh as No. 6 in the BCSrankings and No. 7 in theAP poll last season, withthree of its losses coming toteams that were ranked inthe top three in the countrywhen they faced OSU (#1Texas, #2 Texas Tech and#3 Oklahoma). In four ofthe Cowboys’ victories,Beckman’s defense heldopponents to 14 points orfewer. In 2007, the Cowboyswent 7-6, including a 49-33win over Indiana in theInsight Bowl in Tempe,AZ.At Ohio State, Beckmanmentored the Buckeyecornerbacks. In 2006, OhioState ended the year No. 12nationally in total defense, allowing just 280.5 yards pergame. The Buckeyes were fifth in the country in scoringdefense, yielding only 12.8 points per game, and AntonioSmith was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award as thenation’s top defensive back.In 2005, Beckman helped coach an Ohio Statedefense that ranked No. 1 in the nation against the run andfifth in total defense. The Buckeyes finished fourth in bothmajor polls. During his stay at Ohio State, the Buckeyeswere 22-3 with appearances in the 2006 Fiesta Bowl andthe 2007 BCS Championship game. Along the way hecoached six All-Big Ten defensive backs. His final gameas a coach with Ohio State was the 2007 BCS NationalChampionship Game vs. Florida, where Beckman facedhis former boss from his days at Bowling Green, UrbanMeyer. At Bowling Green, Beckman was a three-timenominee for the Frank Broyles Award, presented annuallyto the nation’s top assistant coach. He was a finalist inBeckman asks his team to volunteer their time to communityservice every Friday in February. “I think it’simportant for our players to get out in the communityand give of themselves a little bit,” he said. “It’s beenan awesome experience for them.”

2001 when the Falcons led the Mid-American Conferencein total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense, turnovers gained and scoring margin. The CollegeFootball News named him one of the country’s topdefensive coordinators. During his stay at Bowling Green, the Falcons won two bowl games, a MAC division titleand finished ranked in the national polls three times.Head Coach Tim BeckmanPlaying Days and Coaching OriginsBeckman began his coaching career in 1988 as agraduate assistant at Auburn, where he earned his master’sdegree in education.
