Dear Community of St. Ursula Academy, 

W 

ith great honor and humility, I introduce myself as the third 

president of St. Ursula Academy. It is an exciting yet challenging 

time for Catholic schools, and my goal is to ensure that St. Ursula 

Academy is the caliber of school that others aspire to be. 

I intend to bring to this presidency the experience and tools needed to be an informed and effective leader. As you 

may already know from reading press releases or communications from St. Ursula, I am a proud 1977 SUA grad. I 

have a corporate background in managing finances, merchandising, and human resources as well as implementing 

strategic plans and managing the business affairs of both St. Ursula Academy and The Ursulines of Cincinnati. I 

have also had the privilege of co-chairing St. Gertrude’s parish capital campaign and strategic planning process, 

and serving in a leadership role in The Seven Hills School’s annual fund drives. I am blessed with a wonderful 

husband, Mac, two daughters, Hannah and Madison, proud SUA alums, who attend OSU and UD respectively. Our 

son, Charlie, is a freshman at UD, and Henry is a junior at Indian Hill High School. 

My qualifications are only important insofar as they allow me to use them to benefit the school I love. My first 

sixty days have been ones of learning, laying foundations, and implementing new initiatives. I have begun to 

acquaint myself with the staff, the students, and the strategic plan. Together with my enthusiastic and talented 

team, we have identified great opportunities in the areas of 21st century learning strategies, advancement, finance 

management, and marketing. 

The single most important goal for the staff and leadership of St. Ursula Academy is to provide a safe and nurturing 

environment that celebrates each young woman’s abilities and embraces her spirit. I find teenagers to be bright, 

refreshingly imperfect, and full of energy. At St. Ursula Academy, we thrive on this excitement and welcome the 

enthusiasm that comes from talented young women. Each day we will look to our mission, vision, and core values 

as we make decisions and act to make St. Ursula the Catholic school we want our daughters to attend. We will 

honor all the Ursuline sisters, faculty, staff and students who lighted our way and will take St. Ursula Academy 

confidently into the future.

In conjunction with the publication of The Academy 

Alum in spring 2004, the SUA magazine has 

featured students, alumnae and topics that focus 

on the four roles that a graduate is ready to play in 

the world at graduation: thinker, leader, nurturer 

and prophet. In this issue, the feature article 

on page 2 celebrates Incoming President Lelia 

Keefe Kramer ’77 and her goals and dreams for 

the future of St. Ursula Academy. She is a living 

example of an Academy Alum. 

The students are first critical thinkers challenged by 

an academically rigorous curriculum balanced with 

enriching co-curricular activities. They demonstrate 

the qualities of leader, nurturer and prophet by 

contributing to the family spirit in our school, 

showing a commitment to Christian service and 

a deep sense of responsibility to our community. 

They learn and show respect for differences and 

diversity and are living examples of the power of 

hard work and tenacity. 

The Academy Alum will become a part of St. Ursula’s 

archival tools as a model for alums as they measure 

their success after graduation and into their future.

Introducing St. Ursula Academy President 


t. Ursula Academy welcomed its third president, Lelia Keefe Kramer ’77 in 

S June. With just a few months under her belt, she is already making an impact. 

Building on more than 100 years of tradition and excellence, she is working to 

move St. Ursula forward, ensuring a St. Ursula education is possible for as many 

talented young women as possible. 

The search committee set the bar high when they developed the criteria for the 

new President. The chair of St. Ursula Academy’s Board of Trustees said Lelia 

moved right to the top of the list because she had the right combination of 

leadership skills and commitment to the mission. 

“We pursued a strong leader who would passionately and energetically embrace the 

mission of our beloved school,” said Board Chair Mary Kay Pastura Hauser ’68. 

“Without question, we have found such an individual in Lelia. She has a strategic 

vision for the school. Above all, she is a leader who will defi nitely follow in the 

footsteps of Saint Angela Merici by cultivating the “Vine” and working with her team 

to develop the next generation of young women of faith, integrity and courage.” 

The Path to President 

Lelia said it is clear that all of her life experiences, beginning with her years as a 

student, have led her to and prepared her for her new role as President of SUA. 

“God has had you on this path to be President all of your life, and you weren’t 

aware of it until now,” said Kramer’s husband Mac. 

Lelia and her twin sister, Ruthie, were both very involved in life at SUA as students 

and made the most of their high school years at SUA. Lelia said she felt right at 

home at SUA wanting to stay after school each day, where she found 

many ways to get involved. She was a spirit leader for the school 

as one of the student cheerleaders for the volleyball and basketball 

games. She was also front and center on stage after alumna, Kathy 

Backherms ’73, who is now SUA’s Music Director, wrote a play about 

twins, a role that was perfect for Lelia and sister Ruthie.

“When Lelia mentioned her interest in the presidency at SUA, I was thrilled to 

death,” said Ruthie Keefe ’77. “Knowing what I know of Lelia, I thought of the 

wonderful and exciting things she would bring to St. Ursula Academy. Our 

fondest memories stem from SUA: the friendships we developed, the life-long 

lessons bestowed upon us from the teachers and nuns. We truly were 

encouraged to be strong young women.” 

During her time as a student at SUA, Lelia also served the community as a tutor 

for students at neighboring St. Francis de Sales. 

“I fi rst met Lelia over 30 years ago when I was principal of St. Francis DeSales 

and she was an energetic Saint Ursula girl coming faithfully to tutor DeSales 

students,” said Sister Mary Jerome Buchert ’63, O.S.U. “Lelia brightened 

the school halls with her characteristic warmth, good humor, generosity and 

enthusiasm for the task at hand.” 

It was during these years when the seeds of the Ursuline values were planted and 

took fi rm root. Some of the educators who infl uenced Lelia during her student years 

at SUA include Jinny Berten, Senora Aruzza, Rita Pawlus and Judy Wimberg ’58. 

Lelia was a success in the professional world where she fi ne tuned her skills in 

management, retail fi nance, and strategic planning. During her years as Divisional 

Vice President at Lazarus Department Stores, she managed hundreds of millions 

in inventory and helped grow her division. As her family grew, Lelia became the 

business manager for the Ursulines of Cincinnati, where she managed expenses 

and planned for the long-time fi nancial security of the Sisters. During these years, 

she gained a rich knowledge and appreciation of the Ursuline heritage.

St. Angela and her company challenged each of us to make a difference, whether 

big or small. To honor St. Angela’s legacy, Lelia has arranged for each student and

“The Sisters have all inspired us to have faith,” said Kramer. “They were such 

forward thinkers. They really embraced change and planned ahead for the 

betterment of the order and that’s not always easy.” 

She believes it’s important to be good stewards of every dollar and that we 

manage our finances appropriately to best benefit our students and the school. 

“In 2003, when I became General Minister of the Ursulines of Cincinnati, Lelia was 

serving as our business manager,” said Sister Mary Jerome. “By then she was 

Lelia Keefe Kramer, wife, mother of four, community volunteer, and a woman who 

had had a distinguished corporate career. I was privileged to work closely with her 

for the last eight years. The same qualities that endeared her to me as a tutor at 

DeSales were still evident. In addition, she had become a woman able to make the 

difficult decisions, act collaboratively and think strategically. She may not always 

agree with you, but she will listen, hear you, and act out of mutual respect.” 

Big Plans for SUA 

Lelia Keefe Kramer has several goals for St. Ursula Academy and has already 

made progress in her work to reach them. 

Lelia sees the need for additional financial assistance to help more deserving 

young women attend St. Ursula. She also wants to make tuition less of a burden 

for parents. As a result, her first order of business was to create the St. Ursula 

Leadership Alliance, or SULA. SULA is a team of inspired alumnae and past 

parents who have committed to raise money over several years that will afford 

more young women the opportunity to attend St. Ursula Academy, which provides 

bright opportunities to future women scholars and leaders. 

“It was wonderful to see how many of our alumnae and past parents stepped 

forward to support this important initiative,” said Kramer. “This group realizes how 

special this place is and how it shaped who they and their daughters are. They 

really want to pay it forward.” 

Another of her goals is to encourage our St. Ursula community to recognize the 

differences we all have, whether faculty, staff, students, parents and volunteers 

and supporters and to embrace the diversity we have in our school culture. As a 

parent, she has learned to appreciate the differences in the ways the kids learn. 

She believes it’s important that educators partner with parents and communicate 

and collaborate to educate our students. 

“There really is no more valuable job than that of teaching a student, said Kramer. 

“ I see it in the culture here and love the way the faculty and staff truly live the 

mission each and every day.” 

Family is very important to Lelia and is at the heart of who she is and all she 

does. “I am so grateful to my mom and dad for allowing me to attend St. Ursula 

Academy. I learned life skills and lessons that still serve me today. And I am 

so grateful to my husband, Mac, who helps me reach my dreams and to my 4 

beautiful children, Hannah, Madison, Charlie and Henry who are supportive to me 

in everything I do.” 

“Lelia will bring her strongest attitude to her new role, kindness, said Lelia’s twin 

sister Ruthie Keefe ’77. “She will be kind to the young students, teachers, staff 

and parents. Angela Merici would be proud and so am I.” 

“Assuming the presidency of St. Ursula Academy is both a great honor and 

daunting responsibility, for Lelia, the honor is not about ego but about the 

opportunity to serve the young 

women we are educating and an

Meet the School Leadership Team Members 

with New or Expanded Roles at SUA! 

Craig Maliborski: 

Principal 

Craig Maliborski moves into the role 

of St. Ursula Academy Principal for the 

2011-2012 school year. 

After serving one year at St. Ursula as 

assistant principal, Maliborski has already 

established himself as a strong, visionary 

leader at St. Ursula Academy and has a 

strong commitment to the mission, vision 

and core values of the Academy. He also 

has demonstrated an understanding and 

commitment to the traditions of St. Ursula Academy that students have enjoyed 

since the school was started in 1910. With three future Bulldogs of his own, he 

has a vested interest in keeping St. Ursula an education leader in our region. 

“I am excited and humbled to be principal of St. Ursula Academy,” said Craig 

Maliborski, incoming St. Ursula Academy principal. “As part of the leadership 

team, I look forward to continuing my work with the outstanding faculty and staff 

as we prepare young women for leadership in the 21st century.” 

Maliborski has deep experience with Catholic education, strong academics, 

discipline, and student life policies. He holds a Masters degree in the Art of 

Teaching Mathematics and is a National Board Certified teacher. Prior to coming 

to St. Ursula, he held leadership and teaching positions at St. Xavier High School 

here in Cincinnati and St. Louis University High School in St. Louis, MO. 

He lives on the west side with his wife Amy, a physical therapist, and three 

daughters Emma, Grace and Charlotte. 

Mary Ann Meyer: 

Assistant Principal 

Mary Ann Meyer joins the St. Ursula staff as assistant 

principal for the 2011-2012 school year. A National 

Board Certified teacher, Meyer comes to St. Ursula from 

St. Xavier High School where she was an art educator 

for nearly 30 years. 

During her years as a Catholic educator, Meyer has held 

several leadership positions in addition to her teaching 

responsibilities. Among her strengths are curriculum study and improvement and 

program management and coordination, which make her a good fit for the position. 

“St. Ursula Academy has a strong reputation of excellence and I’m ready to get 

started in helping to form young, female leaders,” said Mary Ann Meyer, new 

assistant principal at St. Ursula Academy. 

Meyer is anxious to work as a team with newly appointed principal Craig Maliborski 

to promote the mission and vision of St. Ursula Academic, carrying on the tradition 

of academic excellence in a nurturing and creative environment. Unafraid of new 

things, Meyer is also looking forward to working with young women for the first time. 

Judy Sandquist: 

Vice President of 

Advancement 

Judy Sandquist is taking the lead in 

St. Ursula’s Advancement department. She 

was named Vice President of Advancement 

at St. Ursula, a role formerly held for 16 

years by Cynthia Khoo-Robinson. 

Sandquist came to St. Ursula Academy 

in 2006 from the Sisters of St. Joseph where she served as the Director of 

Development before being named Executive Director of Development and was 

responsible for three out of state development offices as well as the Cincinnati 

office. Judy served as the Major and Planned Giving Director before assuming 

the leadership role of the Victorian Christmas/Masquerade Ball and all affiliated 

fundraising events and activities. 

She has an extensive background in development and is 

highly qualified to move our advancement efforts forward as 

VP of Advancement. 

“I am excited to be part of the new team and look forward 

to building upon an already strong foundation,” said Judy 

Sandquist, Vice President of Advancement. “I look forward 

to working with the St. Ursula and the Greater Cincinnati 

community to create even stronger support for our current 

and future students.” 

She lives with her husband, Bill, Assistant Principal at St. X. 

She has three adult children and two grandchildren.

Team up for Turf: Time to Play!

hen students returned to school the 

week of August 16th, they were 

welcomed with an awesome sight - a 

beautiful new turf athletic field where a grass 

field once stood. The best news, while the old 

grass field was reserved exclusively for select 

varsity athletic games, this new field will be 

accessible to all students for gym classes, 

practices, activities, and more! 

St. Ursula raised the funds needed to convert 

its former grass field to turf through a targeted campaign called “Team up for 

Turf”. Crews from the Motz Group broke ground Wednesday, April 27th on the 

northwest side of SUA’s campus in East Walnut Hills. Several key donors and 

project leaders each took a shovel in the ceremonial groundbreaking that was 

moved indoors due to the poor weather conditions. 

The turf field surface replaced the current grass field that is home to SUA’s 

nationally ranked soccer team, state championship Field Hockey Team the 

Lacrosse team and St. Ursula athletic events. The new turf provides a state-ofthe-art 

surface for many purposes.

“This is new field has many benefits,” said Athletic Director Mike Sipes. “It will 

be all-purpose, all-weather, safe, durable and affordable to maintain. The new 

field’s rapid drainage and durable soft carpet provide a safe, consistent surface, 

ready most any time, most any use for practices, games, physical education 

classes, other school and community events.” 

Located at Schottzie Stadium, the new field is called Buenger Field. Come see it 

the next time you visit the SUA campus!

St. Ursula Leadership Alliance (SULA) 

t. Ursula Academy continues to be the first high school choice for many 

S young women across Greater Cincinnati. But despite their strong desire 

to become part of the SUA community, more and more young women require 

financial aid to make their dream of attending St. Ursula come true. 

Helping more of these young women attend St. Ursula Academy by providing a 

greater level financial assistance is the goal of a new initiative just launched at St. 

Ursula Academy. Created by St. Ursula President Lelia Keefe Kramer ’77, The 

St. Ursula Leadership Alliance, or SULA, is a group of alumnae and friends 

of St. Ursula who have volunteered to help raise additional scholarship dollars

Center at St. Ursula Academy 

atalie Bradley ’09 was a senior at St. Ursula Academy when she was 

diagnosed with leukemia. The disease took her life on November 20, 2009. 

To honor her memory, on March 19, 2011, Natalie’s parents Steven and Rita 

Bradley and brother TJ joined SUA as they turned a yearlong project into reality 

with the opening and dedication of the new Natalie Bradley Music Technology 

Center in Schott Hall. 

“Music technology is the future 

of music, and in the Natalie 

Bradley Music Technology Center, 

we now have the tools to guide 

our students into music-making 

for the 21st century!” said St. 

Ursula Academy Music Director

each year. The extra financial assistance will make it possible for St. Ursula to 

provide more educational opportunities to talented future scholars and leaders. 

The funds raised through SULA will be in addition to the money raised through 

the Annual Fund, which helps offset the gap between tuition and the actual cost 

of educating a student at St. Ursula.

The new Center features stations complete with 10 iMac computers and 10 

Axiom 61 keyboard controllers that were specifically chosen because they come 

with drum pad triggers, and these keyboards are designed to interact with the 

music software on the computers. 

The iMacs are loaded with software for ear-training and learning music theory 

and they also come with the GarageBand software that enables students to write 

their own songs. 

“Having all of this wonderful 

equipment has made it possible 

for us to establish a new track of 

coursework in Music Technology 

here at SUA, and beginning next 

year, we will have a two-term Music 

Theory and Song-writing Course 

as well as new classes in “Digital 

Keyboard/Piano,” and “Music 

Technology,” said Backherms.

SUA BALL presents 

ave the date now for St. Ursula Academy’s annual auction 

S event, the SUA Ball (formerly called Victorian Christmas and 

Masquerade Ball). The theme this year is “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” The 

event will again feature hundreds of fabulous items in an oral and 

live auction with dinner, music and dancing. 

This annual event raises money to help provide scholarships and 

financial assistance to many students who qualify. Last year, the 

event raised a net total of $234,000. Since its inception 30 years 

ago it has raised well over $3.3 million dollars. 

Rose Stertz: SUA Director of Special Events 

St. Ursula welcomes Rose Stertz back to the team as Director 

of Special events for SUA, including the SUA Ball. She is working 

closely with Mark and Casey ’77 Thomas Guilfoyle, parents of 

Katie ’13 who will chair this year’s SUA Ball. They are already hard 

at work making plans and working with many committees. As you 

can imagine, it takes many volunteers to put on this amazing event

There are other facets to this event during the course of the year including an Online 

Auction, a Grand Raffle and a Tuition Raffle, which is held in the spring and offers a 

free year of tuition. Jim and Meg Ryan, parents of Caroline ’13 and Catherine 

’15 are the winners of the 2011-2012 St. Ursula tuition raffle. They will receive free 

tuition for one year for one of their daughters, a value of $11,300! Their winning ticket 

was selected on May 20, 2011. Proceeds from the annual tuition raffle were added 

to the profits from the Masquerade Ball event to help the General Fund and provide 

scholarships and financial assistance to students who qualify.

T 

he 2010 – 2011 school year was one of significant transition for 

St. Ursula Academy. In November, 2010 the Centennial year came to a 

close with an inspirational Mass at the Cathedral followed by a joyous celebration 

at the school including a fireworks display. Officially we have now transitioned 

to the next century of educating young women of faith, integrity and courage. 

Judith Wimberg ’58, St. Ursula’s President of 14 years, ended her successful 

tenure at the end of the school year. On behalf of our St. Ursula family, I want 

to sincerely thank Judy for her dedicated service to our beloved school. Her 

many contributions have left a lasting impact on the school for generations to 

come. I also want to recognize Judy O’Donnell, the Principal, who left at the end 

of the school year, for her loyal service to St. Ursula Academy. We have now 

transitioned to a new Administrative Team. Lelia Keefe Kramer ’77 assumed the 

role of President and Craig Maliborski the role of Principal in July, 2011. Mary 

Ann Meyer has joined St. Ursula as the new Assistant Principal. With a strong 

leadership team in place, we look forward to maintaining our rich heritage of 

educating young women in accordance with the Ursuline values and tradition. 

Although much of our time this past year was spent on the transition and 

finding the best individuals to fill the vacancies, we did make great progress in 

some other key areas. I want to personally thank the administration, staff and 

faculty for their efforts in keeping us on track with the strategic plan initiatives. 

A marketing study was completed in May. We are currently applying the study 

results to competitively position St. Ursula in the marketplace from an Admissions 

perspective. The faculty has embraced the 21st century learning practices and 

they continue to pursue innovative and best practice methods to ensure that we 

maintain the highest academic standards in providing an education to young 

women in the Cincinnati area. And of course, our very generous benefactors 

have made it possible to install a new artificial turf field for the sports complex. 

Let’s hope the new field will be a lucky charm and be the site of numerous wins 

for the BULLDOGS. 

A number of gifted individuals departed the Board of

Team Up for Turf 

Below is a list of individuals and

A special thanks to all who made 

our Field of Dreams come true. The 

Team Up for Turf project was a huge 

success! our new turf field replaced 

a grass field that required substantial 

maintenance and could only be used 

for limited home games. The new 

turf is all-purpose, all-weather, safe, 

durable and affordable. The new field’s 

rapid drainage and durable soft carpet 

provide a safe, consistent surface, 

ready most any time, most any use for 

practices, games, physical education 

classes, other school and community 

events. it will now be accessible to all 

students instead of a few. 

The new field, called Buenger Field, 

is home to SUA’s nationally ranked 

Soccer team, state championship Field 

Hockey Team the Lacrosse team and 

St. Ursula athletic events.

message 

Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends of SUA: 

“Why did you choose St. Ursula Academy?” 

T 

his question is asked of many people, including incoming freshmen, 

current students, alumnae and staff. Having ended my first year, I have 

been asked this question repeatedly. I suspect that others who have been asked 

this question have had a similar experience as me: The reasons why we continue 

to choose St. Ursula are different from the reasons that attracted us to the 

community in the first place. 

Like many middle school students, I was initially drawn to St. Ursula for various 

reasons: a superior academic program spanning 100 years, a strong Catholic 

formational program, the juxtaposition of historical buildings with state-of-theart 

facilities and outdoor classrooms that are only found at the school’s East 

Walnut Hills campus. Equally important, though, I had many occasions where I 

interacted with intelligent, strong and caring “St. Ursula” women—and I wanted 

my daughters to have the same experiences in high school that helped form 

these women. 

Having ended my first year as assistant principal, and at the beginning of my 

tenure as principal, the experiences that I have had here reinforce the reasons 

that initially intrigued me about St. Ursula. The college preparatory curriculum, 

including new courses this year, continue to prepare our young women for 

universities and beyond. Our formational programming, including service, 

diversity, guidance and spiritual opportunities, provide students with experiences 

and asks them to reflect on those experiences. As so many have done before, 

students continue to walk down the beautifully tiled floor of Chapel Hall, 

sometimes taking a short break in the stillness of the Chapel. Currrent students 

can also be found utilizing wonderful new facilities, including the Keller Student 

Center, Natalie Bradley Music Technology Lab and Buenger Field at Schottzie 

Stadium. Lastly, after seeing our students, in particular our seniors, interact 

with each other and their community, I am more excited than ever to witness my 

daughters’ growth into St. Ursula women. 

With all of that said, my current answer to “Why did you choose St. Ursula?” is 

much different. Now, I would respond with how the people who run the programs 

and utilize the spaces have affected me. By witnessing teachers and staff live the 

directives of St. Angela—“Be kind and compassionate”—“Persevere faithfully and 

joyfully in the work begun”—“Have love and charity and then do what you wish”—I 

have become more aware of my interactions with not only student and colleagues, 

but with my family and friends. Compassion, concern and understanding are 

part of the relationships among students, teachers and staff that are inherently 

“Ursuline”. The interactions that our students have with mission-driven staff in the 

Academy Alum program, on retreats and in the upcoming advisory sessions, will 

strengthen the relationships that the students have with each other, with adults 

and with God. With many new members joining our experienced faculty this year, a 

year-long orientation program is being developed to provide them with the support 

and knowledge that they need to live the Ursuline charism. 

The mascot of my alma mater (St. Louis University) is the Billiken. I have always 

taken comfort in the knowledge that the Billiken represents “things as they should 

be.” In many ways, whether ultimately I chose St. Ursula or St. Ursula chose 

me, I take comfort in the fact that this is where I belong. I am proud to serve our 

students and staff in a vocation that strives to help others feel the same.

Academics - Leading the way 

St. Ursula Students Team up with 

NASA for Research Project 

NASA is harnessing the brainpower of St. Ursula Academy students to help advance 

their efforts in education and technology. 

Mr. Doug Porter, a teacher in St. Ursula Academy’s science department, is also 

a NASA-trained educator. He has been working with NASA on testing LunarSim 

educational software, which would allow students to design a simulated Lunar Base 

on the moon. NASA has asked St. Ursula Academy to participate in a limited beta 

test to see what students think of the software. NASA is seeking design ideas for 

improving the software and to see how intuitive and engaging it is to use. They are 

also looking for any flaws or glitches in the software. 

Mr. Porter sent the results of the initial testing to NASA. They may ask the students 

to do additional testing on changes made based on their feedback. The NASA project 

manager is also very interested in St. Ursula’s well established one-to-one tablet 

PC program. Tablets are growing more popular so they want to make sure their 

program works well on them. 

Eventually this program will be released nationally. It will first go to museums for 

hands-on interactive displays and then to classrooms throughout the country.

FINE ARTS 

SUA’s McKenzie Fagin ’11 of Loveland showed this year that she can design 

with the best. Miss Fagin won a prestigious National Gold Medal for outstanding 

design through the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. 

Miss Fagin received a Gold Medal in the Design category for her entry, Shoelace 

Alphabet. The design was first chosen as a Gold Key Winner at the regional 

level from among 185,000 entries. From there it chosen to be part of an elite 

group of winners at the national level as a Gold Medal Winner. 

“I loved working on this project. The most challenging of the shoelace letters was 

the ’Q” and it’s the one I am most proud of,” said McKenzie Fagin, Gold Medal 

Award winner. 

To celebrate her achievement, McKenzie and her St. Ursula Academy design 

instructor, Alison Probst, traveled to New York at the end of May to participate 

in the National Celebration and to accept the Gold Medal award at Carnegie Hall. 

The St. Ursula Academy Vocal Ensemble (SUAVE) was awarded with the 

Overall Choral Award for scoring the highest of all high school choral ensembles 

in all divisions in the “Music Showcase Festivals” Cedar Point Competition in 

Sandusky, Ohio on May 14, 2011. Under the direction of Music Director

DIVERSITY 

Celebrating our differences and diversity is one of our core values at St. Ursula 

Academy. Several events are scheduled during the school year to help students 

and our school community learn about and appreciate the differences in our 

American culture and in other cultures.

a variety of vendors. Guests were 

treated to many fashions as well as

of 2012. 

COMMUNITY SERVICE 

The majority of SUA students participate in some kind of community service during 

the year. Whether contributing to the fall Canned Food Drive, volunteering at area 

partner charities, or contributing to weekly mission collections, SUA students are 

making a real difference.

SUA WALK 

The students “stepped up”, literally, to support this year’s annual SUA 

Walk, which helps fill the gap between the cost of their tuition and 

what it actually costs to educate a student each year. The gap is 

more than $1,300 per student. The students can make an investment 

in their education while having a great time walking through our 

gorgeous surrounding neighborhoods of Eden Park and Mt. Adams. 

Some of the sights along the way were the Krohn Conservatory, the 

Cincinnati Art Museum and Holy Cross - Immaculata Church. This 

year, more than $30,000 was raised by the SUA walk.

St. Ursula Academy Facilities Manager Earns Prestigious 

Certified Facility Manager Credentials 

St. Ursula Academy’s Director of Facilities, Kathleen Armstrong, has earned the 

prestigious Certified Facility Manager (CFM) credential. The CFM certification is the 

most prestigious and sought-after credential in facility management. 

St. Ursula Academy (SUA) sits on a full campus that covers nearly 10 acres with 

several buildings. Managing a facility of this size requires a high level of skill and 

experience, which Armstrong possesses. 

The competency-based certification process to earn the CFM requires a high level 

of facility management experience, skill and education. Certification is granted to 

those who are able to pass a comprehensive exam covering all FM core domain 

areas, including operations and maintenance, real estate, finance, planning and 

project management, quality assurance and innovation, technology, communication, 

leadership and management. 

Pursuing this certification is a sign SUA’s ongoing commitment to continuing 

education among its staff and to keeping its facilities maintained and safe for the 

staff and students.

he weather didn’t cooperate, but that didn’t keep anyone from enjoying this year’s Senior 

Tea. 160 seniors adorned in hats and gloves greeted their guests in traditional style, then 

enjoyed the celebration in the Harold C. Schott Gymnasium and Convocation Center. The day was 

especially nostalgic for some alumnae mothers who reminisced as they shared the Senior Tea 

experience with their graduating daughters. 

Occasionally, despite great care, one of the ceramic tea cups used during the Senior Tea is 

broken. Some of the teacups belonged to the Sisters. Others were donated over the years. 

The tea organizers saved pieces over the years, and this year, a creative mother and daughter 

came up with a special way to give the teacup pieces some new life. Stephanie Harty and her 

daughter Anna Harty ’12, created two ceramic gifts for the Masquerade Ball using the pieces 

from the broken teacups. 

All of the pieces had beautiful and unique patterns. When combined for a picture frame and a 

decorative sculpture of a bulldog, the end result was beautiful! We thank them for giving new life 

to an important part of St. Ursula history.

St. Ursula Academy Legacy: 

Pay it Forward 

ay It Forward – what an interesting concept! The premise is one that 

P because you have been a beneficiary of a kind deed or act, then you do the 

same for another person. What a wonderful idea for helping our students at St. 

Ursula. Leaving a legacy can assist you in doing just that – Pay it Forward. You 

can help many students by making a planned gift to SUA. Financial aid is one 

of our greatest needs and so very worthy. As one student who receives financial 

aid says: Something that this grant does for me academically is it gives me the 

motivation that I need to excel when it comes to my grades. Whenever I feel as 

if there is no hope left for me anymore, I think about this scholarship and that if I 

was able to earn this, I can achieve anything. 

Below are some ways in which you can make a lasting gift and help future 

students attend St. Ursula Academy. Please think of them when making your 

estate plans. You can make a difference! 

Bequest 

A bequest is made when a donor provides in a will or living trust for the transfer 

of a specific amount, a specific asset, or a portion of the remainder of an estate. 

Assets may be cash, stocks, bonds, mutual fund shares, real estate or personal 

property. Bequests benefiting St. Ursula Academy avoid estate taxes. 

Life Insurance 

To make a life insurance gift, a donor names St. Ursula Academy as owner 

and beneficiary of a new or existing life insurance policy. Donors are entitled to 

income-tax deductions for new policy premiums or the cash value of an 

existing policy. 

Charitable Gift Annuity 

A donor may create a charitable gift annuity by transferring assets such as cash, 

stocks, bonds and mutual fund shares to St. Ursula Academy in exchange for a 

fixed, lifetime income. Payments can begin immediately or at a specified future 

date. Income received by the donor may be partially tax-fee. Donors are entitled 

to income-tax deductions based upon the value of gifts and payment terms, and 

they avoid estate taxes. This gift type is appealing to older donors seeking a 

guaranteed, fixed lifetime income. 

Retirement Assets 

Gifts from a retirement plan or IRA are made by naming St. Ursula Academy as a 

beneficiary after a donor’s and /or spouse’s lifetime. Gifts of retirement funds avoid 

estate and income taxes that would otherwise be paid if assets were distributed 

directly to family. 

Charitable Remainder Trust 

To establish one of several types of trust commitments, a donor transfers cash, 

securities or real estate to a trust. A fixed or variable income is pad to the donor 

and/or other beneficiary for life or for a specified term of years. Donors are entitled 

to income-tax deductions based upon the value of gifts and trust terms. Such gifts 

avoid capital gains and estate taxes. Commitments of this type appeal to donors 

who wish to contribute to St. Ursula and continue to receive income from investment 

of the gift assets. 

Charitable Lead Trust 


To establish this type of gift commitment, a donor transfers cash, stocks, bonds 

or income-producing real estate to a trust. For the term of the trust, income from 

these assets benefits St. Ursula. Thereafter, the trust principal is typically returned 

to the donor or passed to the donor’s family. Lead trusts enable donors to pass 

assets to family at significantly reduced value for gifts and estate-tax purposes and 

also can enable donors to reduce taxable income during the trust term.
