DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGYBAREILLY COLLEGE, BAREILLYThis is the age of Biotechnology. Biotechnology is the use ofliving systems and organisms to develop or make usefulproducts for human welfare, especially in agriculture, foodproduction, medicine and various industries.Keeping in viewthe importance of this branch of science,our most dynamicand learned Principal Dr. R. P. Singh decided to launch thisprogramme as vocational course at degree level under thescheme of the ‘Activation of Vocational Subjects’ byUniversity Grants Commission, New Delhi.The Department of Biotechnology was established in1996with a diploma programme, approved by M.J.P.Rohilkhand University Bareilly, founded under theleadership of Dr. S. K. Bhatnagar, the then Reader,Department of Botany in Bareilly college and now Prof. andHead, Cell Biology at S.V.B.PUniversity of Agriculture andTechnology, Meerut. Later on, the Diploma course wasupgraded to Postgraduate Diploma inProfessionalBiotechnology. Biotechnology at Bachelors’Degree level was started in 1998-99as one subject approvedby M.J.P.R.University, Bareilly.The department got permanent affiliation in 2008 under theable guidance of Dr.Kavindra Singh, Head. The curriculumincludes most of the advance and applied branches like GeneBiotechnology, Molecular Biology, R-DNA technology,Cytogenetics, Microbiology, Animal Biotechnology,

Instrumentation, Biochemistry, Immunology,Environmental Biotechnology and Tissue Culture. It aims atproducing the candidates of high expertise having potentialto cater the requirements of industries and institutions. Forthis purpose, the students are exposed to important practicalexercises in various disciplines of Biotechnology. Qualityeducation is provided to the students. Apart from regularteaching, experts from various fields are invited for guestlectures. Students regularly give power-point presentationsduring annual seminar series under the aegis ofKARYONBIOTECH ASSOCIATION.The department has well qualified faculty members,properly designed infrastructure and very well equippedlaboratory. Our students are well placed in researchinstitutes and various industries related to food products,pharmaceuticals, tissue culture, floriculture and biofertilizers.Some candidates have also gone to other countries forhigher studies after completion of their bachelor’s degreeprogramme.The proposal for M.Sc.
