one I enjoyed most was in 1990, when a score ofus Tarheelers, driving more than a dozen BMWs,headed to Columbus, OH. Most of the cars wereE30 M3s, but two were orange (Inka, I believe)2002tiis driven, respectively, by the late PeteMcHenry and the Jensens. Our convoy caused abit of a stir en route. Listening to our CB radios(yes, we still had them), we heard one baffledtrucker talk about this foreign-car convoy thatlooked like a “gray snake with an orange head andtail”, zipping like “bats out of hell” through theWest Virginia mountains; and how Smokey waslooking for us but couldn’t catch up. The trooperwas probably still looking when we headed home,at a more sedate pace, a week later. That 1990 Fest was also the scene of a few disastersfor our group. During the TSD rally, one ofour guys managed to puncture the oil pan of hisFiver when he launched the car across a railroadtrack a mite too quickly and came down hard ona rock on the other side. And another driver wasforced to sit out the driver school at the Mid-Ohiotrack after a way-too-enthusiastic spin down agravel road landed him in a ditch with a crumpledfender. But with all the tools and talent in ourgroup, both cars got fixed, enough so to make thedrive home. Like I said, there was safety in numbers. These days, it seems the only convoys – uh,caravans are organized by folks going to Vintage. Iwonder why.To return to the matter at hand – Monterey– I have to admit that those Oktoberfest organizersare getting smarter. Like for instance, they’vescheduled all of the show-and-brag stuff – youknow: the concours and clean car contests – atthe start of the week. In the past, those eventswere often stuck toward the end, sometimes evenjust before the Farewell Banquet. This invariablygave the toothbrush and Q-Tip crowd conniptionsas they had to deal with the grime accumulatedin the driving events. But their other option waseven worse – forget about the rallies and theschool, which is why I never signed up for theconcours. Monterey’s Fest eliminates this concernquite nicely. And early birds arriving a fewdays before the start can feast their eyes on moreautomotive eye candy – at the Legends of the Autobahnshow hosted by a local country club; andthe Festorics event at Laguna Seca. But you knewall that. I only mention it because it’s the kind ofbonus I never got to enjoy at any of the O’festsI’ve attended. Boo hoo!Speaking of Laguna Seca, the driver school isbound to be a hoot: Four days of learning to ne-* Not a Tarheel BMW CCA sponsored eventTARHEEL CHAPTER 2013Jul 20 *Bimmerfest East Ripken Stadium, Aberdeen, MD Web: bimmerfesteast.comJul 27 Ben Long Fresco Trail Drive Andy Barbee andybmwcca@carolina.rr.comAug 19-24 *44nd Annual BMW CCA Oktoberfest Monterey, CA Jackie Bechek 864-250-0022 Web: www.bmwcca.orgAug 29-Sep 1 *ZFest 2013 BMW Performance Center David Weeks Web: www.zscca.orgSep 6-8 *Peachtree Spring HPDS Road Atlanta Braselton Lee Enslin Web: peachtreebmwcca.orgSep 7-8 *THSCC HPDS VIR Full Course THSCC Web: thscc.comSep 19-22 *Charlotte Food Lion Autofair Charlotte Motor SpeedwayWeb: charlotte-autofair.comSep 27-29 *Heacock Gold Cup Historic Races and Car Show Kerrigan Smith Web: virnow.comSep 27-29 *National Capital HPDS Summit Point National Capital Web: nccbmwcca.orgOct 2-5 *American Le Mans Series VIR Web:www.americanlemans.com / www.VIRnow.comOct 5 BMW ///M Club Day BMW Performance Center Stephen Dean stephendean@nc.rr.comOct 18-19 * 18th Annual EURO Autofestival Linda Barber euroregistration@hotmail.comOct 26-27 Street Survival Raleigh NC Police Training Facility Denis Kingberg 919-247-4876 dkingberg@nc.rr.comOct 26 *SCCA Charge of the Headlight Brigade - VIR Web: ncrscca.com4 TARHEEL CHAPTER FOOTNOTES http://www.tarheelbmwcca.org
gotiate the Cork Screw for Goodness sake! NeedI say more? Actually, schools happen to be oneFest aspect that has gotten better and better overthe years; must be those super tracks that havesprouted all over the country. As for the tours andrallies, the record is more mixed. I envy the folkswho’ll be looking for checkpoints in the countrysidearound Monterey and Carmel. It’s pretty, and hilly, with vineyards and big time agriculturaloperations – and lots of nice two-lanes. But that’squite unlike a couple of Fest rallies I’ve been on inrecent years; the way they had me cruise througha lot of sprawling suburbs made me feel I was ona real estate tour! And by the way, a word of cautionabout O’fest rallies: Avoid getting placed inthe top class – Prepared, Class A, Expert or whateverthe label may be. It’s the one with the reallyserious contestants, which almost invariablyleads to protests and heated arguments over supposedlydimwit instructions, allegedly invisiblecheckpoints and what have you. The colorful languageemployed on such occasions by the likes ofthe late ‘Hormone’ Fischer still rings in my ears.As far as the raffle goes, all I can say is: Youpay your money and you take your chances. Withall those absentees buying block of tickets, theodds aren’t great. In forty years, this chapter hashad only a few winners of the big prize, maybethree or four, including one who I recall wasn’t atO’fest – and thought it was a crank call when wephoned him with the good news! Like I said, it’sup to you and Lady Luck.Let’s see; what have I overlooked? Oh, yeah;Oktoberfest hotels tend to get booked solid prettyearly. It’s happened to me the last two times; Ihad to look far afield for vacancies, which wasn’tfun; and I understand it has happened again thisyear, as both the main hotel and the overflowhostelry were out of rooms by mid-May. So, ifyou’re thinking of attending a future Oktoberfest, the word is: Book REAL early, like three months inadvance, and even that may be cutting it close. Ofcourse, that wouldn’t be much of a problem if ourchapter were to host another Oktoberfest in, say,2015.
