Dear Friends,
It has been a very exciting and busy year for
everyone at United Cerebral Palsy of Central
Maryland (UCP-CM). We are especially proud of
the steps we have taken toward reaching our goal
of supporting people with disabilities at the highest
possible level of quality so that they can fulfill their
hopes and dreams and live as independently as
possible.
Our physical facilities have received major
facelifts including both renovations and new
construction. We worked hard to ensure our
existing residential homes received all necessary
renovations and repairs, and we opened a new
residential duplex in Hagerstown by renovating
our former day program center building on Salem
Avenue. Thanks to a contribution from a very
generous donor, our two Baltimore County day
2 0 0 8
A n n u a l R e p o r t
program centers each created and equipped
a sensory stimulation room to help individuals
with severe disabilities better interact with their
environments. And of course, the opening of the
new Delrey School in Lansdowne was one of our
most significant accomplishments during the
past year.
From selling our property in Owings Mills to
finding a new location to leasing and designing
the space and overseeing construction, the new
Delrey School has been a very exciting project.
Our new school is accessible to all, has the latest
technology including a computer lab, spacious
classrooms and therapy rooms, a special sensory
integration therapy room, a daycare center, and
a fully accessible playground. Our expanded
facilities now allow us to serve even more children
with cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities.
In addition to physical renovations, improved
staff training has been a major focus this year.
We now have a revised comprehensive, week-
long orientation program for new staff, and we
enhanced our ongoing training programs for
existing staff to ensure all certifications were
kept up to date. We also hired a full-time human
resources recruiter to help us find the most
qualified staff available and reduce staff turnover.
We are also pleased to announce that UCP-
CM has been able to weather the current
economic downturn thanks to a number of
new initiatives this year that have resulted in
cost savings and cost efficiencies. We brought
our Central Region transportation service in
house, and this has not only been cost effective,
but has allowed us to transport those we
serve to many additional places, from doctors’
appointments to recreational activities. With
improved management, we have been able to
reduce overtime as well as realize cost savings
throughout the organization by restructuring both
services and staffing.
Our fundraising efforts have also been successful.
We were the grateful recipient of several major
foundation grants, as well as many generous
contributions from individuals and corporations
that helped us accomplish the initiatives we have
described. We launched the Independence
Society to recognize those donors who
contributed more than $1,000 last year, with
the first annual donor recognition reception at
Linwoods Restaurant in Owings Mills. We also
used the opportunity to reinstitute our Samuel A.
Tucker Memorial Can Do Award to recognize an
individual we support who has shown remarkable
perseverance in achieving his/her goals despite
the challenges of his/her disability. We were
honored to present the award to David Soden,
a participant in our residential program.
None of this progress would have been
possible without the guidance and leadership
of a dedicated Board of Directors, the financial
support of our many generous donors, and the
dedication and hard work of a committed staff.
We thank all of you for everything you do for
UCP-CM. And to those we support and their
families, we appreciate your confidence in us
and continually look for new ways to improve
and expand the services we provide to you.
We go forth with a positive attitude, renewed
energy, and a strong organization dedicated to
advancing the independence, productivity, and
full citizenship of people with cerebral palsy and
other disabilities.
Sincerely,
Becky has found a home. For the last several
years Becky, who is 27 years old, was living
in temporary respite care housing. Since July
2008, Becky and two other women have made
a home in the newly renovated UCP duplex in
Hagerstown. Becky helped decorate her room in
lavender colors with a colorful quilt and stuffed
cat on her bed. She feels independent and likes
the fact she has privacy when she wants it and
people to be with when she wants company.
Along with her apartment mates she cooks, does
laundry, cleans and has “family” to interact with.
Becky especially enjoys cooking and says grilled
cheese sandwiches are one of her specialties.
The ladies share meal time along with the
house manager. During the day, Becky goes to
UCP’s Day Program in Hagerstown where she
participates in many of the activities, including
the College for Living, where she takes finance
and computer courses. She also enjoys taking
2 0 0 8
trips with the other women from her home. House
manager Christy Esworthy explains that Becky
now feels she has taken control over her life. She
has choices about what she wants to do and that
is a very good feeling. With the support she gets
from Christy and the other UCP staff, Becky can
function at a much higher level.
Annamarie Poole, vice president of operations
for the Western Region, says “The goal of UCP’s
residential facilities is to make a home for people
so they can experience life and be a part of the
community.”
When Marcel returns each day from UCP’s
Adult Day Program in Arbutus, he enjoys time
by himself listening to his music and watching
TV in his newly decorated room at his home in
Randallstown. Marcel lives in a UCP home, where
he and two other individuals have benefited
from UCP’s recent upgrades to the homes in
the Central Region. Marcel has his own TV and
radio in his room, and now he has new lamps,
bed sheets, covers and curtains to go with them.
His room has been freshly painted, and he has
new carpet as well. And to make him feel even
better, Marcel got new clothes to go with his new
surroundings.
The upgrades were coordinated in each home
by the respective UCP house manager in
consultation with the individuals in each home,
who were involved in selecting their new décor.
When Marcel’s house manager, Marcus Cherry,
first came to the home in Randallstown, he
definitely thought some sprucing up was needed
to make the home a brighter, more cheerful and
comfortable place to live and a more pleasing
environment in which to work. He was very
grateful to UCP for their support in providing
the funding to do some redecorating. “It’s all
about giving our residents the best quality of life
possible and the environment in which they live is
an important part of this effort,” says Marcus.
“We also bought new tables, a TV stand, curtains
and pictures for the walls for the house’s common
areas. It really looks great, and our residents have
noticed the difference.”
Cristal lives independently in the Hagerstown
community and participates in the Adult Day
Program’s College for Living. She enjoys learning
new things and taking classes in sign language,
money management, and English. Cristal has
made many good friends at The College for Living
and especially likes how much the staff and
teachers care about the individuals. She explains
that they are always there to lend a helping hand.
With the help of UCP’s supported employment
services, Cristal has been a valued employee
at several businesses in the community. For 14
years, she worked at the Red Lobster doing such
tasks as rolling napkins for table set ups. She
worked at Roy Rogers for two years and currently
works one day a week at Big Lots, where she
prices items for sale. She has enjoyed all her jobs
and meeting new people.
Cristal also works one evening a week for UCP
as part of the cleaning crew for the Adult Day
Program facility. This is a coveted position, and
Cristal is one of UCP’s star workers.
She is truly an example of how UCP can help a
person with disabilities live independently, enjoy
a good quality of life, and be a contributing
member of the community.
The room is quiet and peaceful with low lights
and soothing music from relaxation CDs.
Calming images project on a TV monitor and
aromatherapy provides wonderful smells in the
air. There are moon bounce mattresses on the
floor, wedges to lean on, fiber optics, and rotating
light balls. All of this and more can be found in
the Sensory Stimulation Room at the UCP Adult
Day Program Center in Essex. Shaliea and Tina,
participants in UCP’s Medical Day Care program,
say that this is their favorite room in the center.
Shaliea especially likes holding the rope lights
and seeing them change colors. She enjoys
being in the “love shack,” which is like a fiber
optic waterfall. She laughs as she makes faces
and kisses herself in the mirrors in the room.
One of her favorite activities is getting out of
her wheelchair and lying on the moon bounce
mattress, where she can roll and scoot around.
Tina also enjoys the freedom from her wheelchair
when she uses the wedges and moon bounce.
She tells us she is more comfortable being
able to move around, stretch her muscles, and
reposition herself. She likes to feel the movement
of the moon bounce. Tina also enjoys holding the
vibrating light tube and especially likes when it
massages her neck. She tells us the whole room
makes her feel good.
There are now Sensory Stimulation Rooms at all
of UCP’s five Adult Day Program Centers, thanks
to a very generous donation from the Orokawa
Foundation that funded the setup of rooms at
the Essex and Sulphur Spring Centers this year.
Now all program participants, especially those
with profound disabilities, have the opportunity
to feel the pleasure of being involved with their
environment and can experience the impact it
has on their minds and bodies.
A resident in a UCP home in Ellicott City since
2001, Tim is always out and about. At age 41, Tim
loves to go to the movies, especially to watch his
favorites – horror movies. He also enjoys taking
excursions to Baltimore, the Eastern Shore and
beyond. When Tim speaks of his adventures, a
grin fills his face.
“When I sit around, sometimes I feel down,
but when I go out, I feel so much better. Last
summer I went into Baltimore for Artscape and an
Orioles game. In the fall, we went to the Maryland
State Fair, which was really fun,” says Tim.
Thanks to recent changes in UCP’s Central
Region’s transportation services, Tim also was
able to travel to West Virginia for Christmas.
With Tim’s house manager, Will, at the wheel of
a newly donated lift-equipped van designated
specifically for residential use, Tim had the
opportunity to visit with out-of-state relatives for
2 0 0 8
the holiday. “It was the best time,” exclaims Tim.
“I watched my 5-year-old nephew play.”
According to Will, whenever he can get the use
of a bus or van, he is taking the residents out.
He never wants Tim and the other residents to
feel stuck in the house. Will and Tim are already
planning their upcoming trip in the spring to a
semi-pro wrestling match.
Many of the individuals at UCP are as pleased as
Tim that UCP has brought its Central Regions’s
transportation services in house and they no
longer have to rely on an outside vendor. Driver
Tremar Thomas tells us now that UCP handles
its own transportation, things are more organized
and reliable.
“The individuals we transport are very grateful
that UCP provides this service, and whenever
I have the opportunity to take them out, I do
so,” says Tremar. Tremar never minds going
the extra mile for the individuals at UCP, as he
demonstrated when he took an individual to the
Eastern Shore to spend Christmas with his family.
Tremar even took a whole group of individuals
to New York to board their ship for a Caribbean
cruise. Tremar sees the transportation service as
a positive indicator of UCP’s growth.
Sutton was born 9 ½ weeks before her due date,
weighing just two pounds. In 2006 at age three,
she came to the UCP Delrey School on a feeding
tube, unable to walk or support her weight, crying
a great deal, and having a hard time adjusting
to new people, places or things. She was just
starting to talk.
Today, Sutton is 5 ½ years old. She is a
happy child with a whole new attitude. She has
developed social skills and interacts with her
schoolmates and teachers. Sutton has even
been dubbed “the mayor” of Delrey. Her mother,
Ali, says, “With the help of Delrey’s Sensory
Integration Therapy program and Delrey’s caring
staff, Sutton now can function in everyday life
situations. She accepts new things and can
handle transitions. It is wonderful to see.”
With the help of Delrey’s therapeutic feeding
program, Sutton is no longer on a feeding tube
and eats solid food. This past October she
started to walk without a walker or any other aids.
This was truly a great moment for Sutton and her
family and attributed to Delrey’s physical therapy
program.
Academically, Sutton is ahead of many of her
classmates, and the Delrey staff customizes her
academic program to be sure she is continually
challenged. The staff will write a story, for
example, that she can read to her class. She
goes to an older math class as she has an
aptitude with numbers.
Sutton loves the new Delrey School building
that opened last year with its bright colors and
spacious rooms. She especially likes the Sensory
Integration Therapy Room. Sutton found the
transition to the new building an easy one and
can frequently be seen playing on the new
accessible playground, walking the halls, and
enjoying herself at school.
N e w T e c h n o l o g y P u t s A S m i l e O n C i e r r a ’ s F a c e
When Cierra enrolled at UCP Delrey School in
2005, her ability to communicate was limited.
Her multiple disabilities restricted her ability to
walk and talk, and, at the time, her only form of
communication was a simple, low-tech device
affixed to her wheelchair. “It was apparent
very early on that this was not enough,” said
Patti Kurek, a speech therapist at Delrey, “She
had so much more that she wanted to say, so
much more she wanted to express.” Kurek was
determined to find a new voice for Cierra.
Kurek collaborated with Angela Strauch, the
director of UCP of Central Maryland’s No
Boundaries Assistive Technology Center, as well
as the Baltimore County Public School System
(BCPSS) to find the right device for Cierra.
“Cierra has a hard time keeping her head still,
so we needed a piece of equipment that would
be flexible in where it accepts her responses,”
said Kurek. After a thorough assessment using
2 0 0 8
A n n u a l R e p o r t
equipment recently donated to Delrey by Verizon
Maryland, the team identified an augmentative
communication device that was perfect for Cierra’s
needs, giving her the ability to communicate
in a life-like voice and have control over a fully
functioning computer using just her eyes.
Thanks to UCP’s perseverance and BCPSS’s
generous funding of the device, Cierra has a
new voice and a bright future. “The eyegaze
system has been a plus for Cierra’s future and
her communication,” said Kurek. “She’s amazing
with it.” According to Kurek, the device helps
Cierra communicate much clearer and faster. She
uses her device in class to respond to teachers’
questions, and she even uses it in her free time
to play games, such as Yahtzee. But what makes
this 11-year-old girl most excited about her new
communication device is the ability to e-mail
messages to her friends.
“It’s been a wonderful collaborative effort, and
Cierra is lucky to have such an amazing team on
her side,” said Kurek. “Cierra now has a glint in
her eye and a beautiful smile. It’s great to know
that we helped her take her abilities to the next
level.”
