The Editor:Welcome to TKD TALK <strong>2000</strong>,I guess by now you are well into your training programmes, new members haveenrolled and some members have moved on. If this is the case I hope that theFoundation will have taught you well about preserving a bond that will always bethe guiding light in all <strong>of</strong> your goals for the year <strong>2000</strong>.A funny thing happened to me while at the World Camp. One day I was just one <strong>of</strong>eighty-odd coloured belts who had registered to learn more and to meet some <strong>of</strong>the TKD members from throughout the country, and the next I was organising theMaori welcome for Master and Mrs Wheatley. Funnier still was when MarkBanicevich dropped the role <strong>of</strong> editor for the TKD TALK -in my lap. [Thank you MrBanicevich for your nomination and also thank you Hayden Breese and KirstenLivingstone for your support.] Thirdly I was requested by Mr McPhail to interviewMaster Wheatley on video. [How he knew I did this sort <strong>of</strong> thing puzzles me !!]However Mr James Rimmer has the recording, and one day we might be fortunateenough to read the transcript in TKD TALK.Without giving too much away I can say that Master Wheatley was extremelyimpressed with the standard <strong>of</strong> those members who attended the World Camp.Wishing you all the best and keep up the good work.Mike StaffordI believe that, regardless <strong>of</strong> size - how small or how big,- if it’s informative and is related to ITFNZ it should beprinted. (Aka: The Epic Saga)IT ALL STARTEDIn June 1998, a team from <strong>New</strong> Zealand travelled to Hawaii for a Senior Dangrading, among them Mr Evan Davidson and Mr James Rimmer. Over there, thesetwo great legends <strong>of</strong> ITFNZ met Master Robert Wheatley. Mr Rimmer suggestedto Mr Davidson, “Zeus, I have a great idea. Let’s organise a World Camp in <strong>New</strong>Zealand.” So they decided to invite this awesome Master over to <strong>New</strong> Zealand asthe guest instructor at our World Camp.PREPARATIONCamp planning soon got underway, with interest shown from such countries asArgentina, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Mongolia and Ghana, all <strong>of</strong> which requiredvisas to get to <strong>New</strong> Zealand. Unfortunately people have a great tendency to leavethings to the last minute. Which was the case with this World Camp, as theorganisers soon found out. Closing dates for applications were approaching fastwith numbers attending still <strong>do</strong>wn. Two weeks before the original date theorganiser’s letterbox nearly fell over due to the weight <strong>of</strong> the mail.CHALLENGINGMeanwhile Mr D was having lots <strong>of</strong> fun e-mailing, phoning and faxing hundreds <strong>of</strong><strong>of</strong>ficial invitations and explanations to India, Pakistan and Nepal, and their relatedNZ Embassies, ending up in a major paper war. Three weeks before the camp wasdue to commence, the Indians had their visas refused. The explanation given wasthat they didn’t have a genuine reason for coming (!) or sufficient sponsorship. MrD began to panic - what if Nepal and Pakistan were also refused? More grey hairsappeared. Then around a week later he rang the NZ Embassy in <strong>New</strong> Delhi onlyto be told that the Nepalese team had also been refused. Mr D got mad. Then hehad lots <strong>of</strong> fun e-mailing, phoning and faxing the Immigration Minister’s <strong>of</strong>fice tocomplain! Anyway, to make a long story short, the Pakistan group eventually gotvisas accepted - two days before the camp started.Then the USA had its worst snowstorm in 72 years and Master Wheatley’s planegot stranded in Los Angeles (Mr McPhail’s comment? “This camp is <strong>do</strong>omed!”).Fortunately, Master Wheatley was able to arrive in <strong>New</strong> Zealand on Friday morning,to the relief <strong>of</strong> everyone. Unfortunately, the Pakistanis, who were meant to arrivein the afternoon, never appeared.4


“THE <strong>CAMP</strong>” NGARUAWAHIA Friday evening:Lots <strong>of</strong> keen and excited people turned up at the Christian Youth Camp inNgaruawahia, ready for five days <strong>of</strong> hard training and pain. After everyone hadfinally registered and figured out which room they were in, we got ourselves allpsyched up for the <strong>of</strong>ficial Maori Welcome for Master and Mrs Wheatley, organisedby Mike Stafford TKD Avondale. This involved learning to perform the “Powhiri”- not a good idea for people like myself! Ten rehearsals later we just about had itright. Apart from sitting outside in the freezing wind, it all went smoothly andMaster Wheatley was very honoured with the welcome and Maori challenge. Later,and away from prying eyes, the challenger gifted Master Wheatley with a carvedMaori flute.Supper was held at 9pm in the dining room and was an excellent opportunity tocatch up with old friends, if we hadn’t already spotted them earlier. Around 10.30,we were supposedly tucked up in our nice cosy beds and asleep. The only problembeing that it’s rather hard to sleep when you share a room with a snorer, a marathonsleep-talker and someone who had fleas in their sleeping bag! (We think).Saturday: Some idiot wakes everyone up at 6am - hang on, that’s the time we’remeant to get up! Mr D was obviously still feeling some leftover stress, because hetook it out on us during the army-style warm-up. After this, breakfast was definitelywelcome! Then Mr D announced he had written a list <strong>of</strong> people for ‘fatigues’ - oneperson thought fatigues meant extra training!Mr Davidson’s Pack Run5


At lunch, Mr D gave us another update on the Pakistani situation; apparently thepolice had put a tail on them (loud cheers) and found out where they were staying.The drama continued.Our afternoon session was breakfalling andreleasing (or in my case, how not to breakfall!).The coloured belts had Master Wheatley for<strong>do</strong>dging/close quarter combat and got a bit <strong>of</strong> ashock when he told them: “No one leaves the <strong>do</strong>jangtill there’s blood on the floor.” Luckily for themhe was just kidding! After dinner, Mr John Havill,our physiotherapist from Te Awamutu, gave alecture on injury prevention (some smart-alec said“Why didn’t we have this lecture earlier in thecamp?”) and gave some valuable tips, as well asmanaging to entertain everyone with his keen wit.After that Mrs Gummer took everyone who couldstill walk for yoga, and we learned the hard waythat night that if we weren’t at supper by 9pm, wewould miss out!Tuesday: (Waitomo Adventure Day). At 10 to 6,Mr Breese rudely awakened the whole campringing the bell like a lunatic, then proceeded toMr Niven “tosses” Mr McPhail inthe Weapons Self Defence class!go round all the <strong>do</strong>rms shouting: “Get up, you lazy maggots!” and shining his torchinto people’s faces. Needless to say, he wasn’t very popular. His excuse was thatthe seniors had got annoyed by people being late to warm-ups. Today everyonewas on time - except the seniors! After suitable punishment (that’s right, everyoneelse got punished for the seniors’ lateness!) we finally completed the four-way tug<strong>of</strong>war - our team lost - and went back to our rooms to get ready for the trip toWaitomo.At Waitomo, we split up intogroups for our activities, taking awalk up the hill to the nearest pubwhile waiting for some <strong>of</strong> the lateractivities to start. Fortunately,Mr Brown had found someone tojoin him in the Haggas HonkingHoles (<strong>do</strong>n’t ask!), but we werestill taking bets as to whether ornot they would make it out alive!I’d decided to try horse trekkingfor the second time and reallyenjoyed it (apart from a very sorebutt for the next two days). Niven got stuck on a horse with a flatulence problem that had a bad habit <strong>of</strong> droppinglittle “presents” every ten minutes or so! Most <strong>of</strong> the seniors, including MasterWheatley, did blackwater rafting and afterwards he said it was better thanDisneyland (score one to us).Once we got backto camp, we werefree to relax for therest <strong>of</strong> the day. Ouronly other“session” was‘Questions andAnswers’ withseniors and MasterWheatley in theBush Chapel. Thisactually ended upbeing one <strong>of</strong> the(many) highlights<strong>of</strong> the camp. Afterlearning aboutQuestion & Answer SessionMaster Wheatley’sbackground, thehistory <strong>of</strong> ITFNZ, the latest update on the Pakistanis and other assorted topics,we all joined Master Wheatley on the guitar in a sing-a-long, which ended upcontinuing all the way back to the dining-room and late into the night. We justwanted to make sure the rest <strong>of</strong> Ngaruawahia was awake….Wednesday:The final day (boo hoo!). Mrs Gummer organised a team <strong>of</strong> ladies to get revenge onMr Breese. They lay in wait in the bushes and ambushed him with water-bombswhile he was on his way to wake us up. Go Mrs Gummer! Of course, there wassome excess water-bombs left over, so after a group discussion, we decided to ‘honour’Mr D during his warm-up. Which we did. The warm-up this morning involvedgetting wet (a Zeus tradition for those few who <strong>do</strong>n’t know!). Fortunately, he couldn’tfind any ice-cold rivers that were clean enough to swim in, so we used the poolinstead!Our last session <strong>of</strong> the day was free-sparring and plyometrics, after which we played“Ultimate Frisbee”. Mrs Livingstone got a little over-excited and crashed into thecorrugated-iron fence - <strong>of</strong> course with such team spirit in our team, we won! MasterWheatley had obviously decided that the 3 rd Dans and above hadn’t worked hardenough, because he made them <strong>do</strong> all the patterns, from number one right up tonumber 24. They were still going at lunchtime! Good on you, Sir!9


After lunch, we had presentations, with gifts for Master Wheatley and his wifeMala. Then everyone said goodbye to all their new and old friends and headedhome.SUMMARYAll in all, it was an excellent, well-run camp and I’d just like to thank everyonewho attended (Palmerston Nth and <strong>New</strong> Plymouth clubs had the biggest turn-out)and made it work. Thanks to the organisers, Mr Davidson and Mr Rimmer, and <strong>of</strong>course Master Wheatley and Mala, who gave up their time to come all the way to<strong>New</strong> Zealand and inspire us with their wis<strong>do</strong>m and awesome personalities. MasterWheatley wanted to know how much I charged for deleting negative comments,but <strong>of</strong> course there weren’t any! All comments I’ve heard regarding the camp werepositive and everyone who went felt it was absolutely worth it and didn’t want it toend. President’s CornerThank you Messrs Evan Davidson and James Rimmer and your team for runningthe World Camp <strong>2000</strong> at Ngaruawahia. Those who attended enjoyed the friendlyatmosphere and the varied programme. Thank you also to Master Wheatley forhis outstanding contribution to the success <strong>of</strong> the Camp.Thank you Mr Paul McPhail and Mrs Sue Breen for producing an imaginative andinnovative event calendar by pr<strong>of</strong>iling our senior Black Belts. Every TKD familyshould have one as a “collector’s item.” Enquire with your instructor for copies <strong>of</strong>this fantastic souvenir.The next kup grading will be conducted by Regional Examiners. The Executivesupports this innovation from the Grading Sub-committee. I hope you will form arapport with the Regional Examiners.I have written a few salient points on the Strategic Marketing Management Reportfor your information. Talk to your instructor or Regional Director if you have goodideas on how we can make ITFNZ more dynamic.STRATEGIC MARKETING MANAGEMENT REPORTSome salient points from the conclusions and recommendations.Situation Analysis: There are many sports organisations and martial arts groupsin NZ. There is a low knowledge <strong>of</strong> martial arts organisations in NZ.Organisation Analysis: ITFNZ lacks direction. Must raise the pr<strong>of</strong>ile <strong>of</strong> ITFNZ.Needs to spread influence into areas we presently <strong>do</strong> not have representation.Give more recognition to “outstanding” instructors and students. Get parents <strong>of</strong>students involved. Provide more expertise in funding procurement.Structure and Communication: Appoint more <strong>of</strong>fice bearers to lighten the work<strong>of</strong> existing <strong>of</strong>ficials. Empowering <strong>of</strong>fice bearers. Appoint more assistant instructorsand train them to run new branches.Form alliances with like-minded organisations.Participation Motivations: Insufficient role models – particularly female ones.Some <strong>of</strong> the motivation factors are: social approval, camaraderie, skill development,fitness, competition and self-defence knowledge.11


ITFNZ Branding: More publicity on the meaning <strong>of</strong> the logo. Need to use regionalbrand e.g. “<strong>Taekwon</strong> Do Manawatu”, “<strong>Taekwon</strong> Do Wellington”.Make use <strong>of</strong> slogan such as: “disciplined body, focused mind, pure spirit” inpromotional materials.Promoting ITFNZ <strong>Taekwon</strong> Do: ITFNZ to mount a campaign using regionalTV, posters, radios and direct marketing.Tournaments: Charge an entry fee. Provide comfortable seating and environmentsuch as seating positions and clear viewing. Use “boxing” type announcements.Consider Tournament as an entertainment event.Seek active sponsorship. Invite participants from other <strong>Taekwon</strong> Do organisations.After reading the above, if you have good ideas to enhance anything please ring todiscuss them with your Regional Director or if you are interested in finding outmore about them please borrow the report from your Regional Director.Norman NgPresidentSNIPPETS from November Executive Committee Meeting· We are looking at a new ITFNZ formal uniform for the new millennium.· We are compiling a list <strong>of</strong> ITFNZ policies.· Mr Brett Kraiger <strong>of</strong> Wellington is now the Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Tournament Subcommittee.· The Universal Grant Scheme and the Gold Point Scheme are now ready forimplementation.· <strong>New</strong> branch at Otago University is starting this term.· Because we sent a team to the World Championship this year, there will be asubstantial deficit for 1999.· The organising region <strong>of</strong> the National tournament will retain all the pr<strong>of</strong>itmade on catering and the other pr<strong>of</strong>it/loss will be retained/borne by ITFNZ.12


From Mr Lowe...TKD is the one common thread that holds us all together. Other than that we are some1500 individuals, all with different interests outside <strong>of</strong> TKD, different hopes andaspirations, different cultures and upbringings. However, to a large number <strong>of</strong> otherpeople, Alcohol plays some part in their lives.[Part 1] Wine, Women and Song is an informative and light-hearted look at some <strong>of</strong>the lesser known effects <strong>of</strong> alcohol on the body.[Part 2] The Walk <strong>of</strong> Life outlines the benefits <strong>of</strong> walking as another activity optionon those days <strong>of</strong>f. Sport science is continually providing answers to some <strong>of</strong> the questionsthat we are interested in that relate to training. Warming-up for activity is one sucharea <strong>of</strong> interest.[Part 3] Skip the Warm-Up <strong>of</strong>fers an interesting how and why angle to the warmingupdebate.WINE WOMEN AND SONGLike it or not alcohol is a widely accepted part <strong>of</strong> our society. Last year Kiwis drankabout 6.8 litres <strong>of</strong> pure alcohol each. That translates into about 140 litres <strong>of</strong> beer. Youcan’t picture that? Then how about half a bath-full, or 14 paint buckets <strong>of</strong> it? Not abeer drinker, then how about five and a half buckets <strong>of</strong> table wine, four buckets <strong>of</strong>sherry, or two buckets <strong>of</strong> rum? If teetotallers and children are removed from the equationthen that means there are adults who are drinking much more than that. Pretty scaryeh?By comparison Kiwis drank more than Americans (6.6 litres) but less than British(7.2) and Australians (7.8). Top <strong>of</strong> the chart were the French who drank 12.1 litres <strong>of</strong>pure alcohol per head.People like to drink because in moderation alcohol releases our inhibitions and relaxesus; it brings out the joke telling, song singing. Drink more than we should and it canpunish us in many other ways.Alcohol affects us in different ways depending on factors such as speed <strong>of</strong> drinking,body weight, presence <strong>of</strong> food in the stomach, drinking history, body chemistry, type <strong>of</strong>beverage, social context and mood. It is a drug that affects the whole body but mostlythe central nervous system.Alcohol has some well-known short-term effects. It is <strong>of</strong>ten thought <strong>of</strong> as a stimulantthat makes people more lively and uninhibited. In small quantities it slightly increasesheart rate, increases blood flow to arms, legs and skin, lowers blood pressure, stimulatesappetite, increases gastric secretions and many other effects.13


Drinking excessive amounts <strong>of</strong> alcohol over long periods <strong>of</strong> time can lead to alcoholismand cause problems with parts <strong>of</strong> the gut and stomach. It is linked to cancer, especiallywhen combined with smoking and can be a cause <strong>of</strong> malnutrition. It can be verydamaging to major organs such as the heart, brain, and liver. In its most serious formthis type <strong>of</strong> damage can lead to death. While moderate amounts <strong>of</strong> alcohol (two standarddrinks a day for men and one for women) can give some protection from coronaryheart.What is excessive drinking? The amount <strong>of</strong> alcohol in a drink is measured in terms <strong>of</strong>a unit called the “standard drink”. A standard drink contains 10 grams <strong>of</strong> alcohol.Here’s how many standard drinks there are in some servings:Number <strong>of</strong> standard drinks in some alcoholic beveragesAmount and type <strong>of</strong> alcoholic drinkNumber <strong>of</strong> standard drinks1 can or stubbie <strong>of</strong> beer at 5% 1.51 nip <strong>of</strong> spirits (whiskey, gin, vodka) 11 glass <strong>of</strong> fortified wine (sherry, port) 11 glass <strong>of</strong> table wine 11 bottle <strong>of</strong> fortified wine (sherry, port) 11.51 pint or handle <strong>of</strong> beer 21 jug <strong>of</strong> beer 41 bottle <strong>of</strong> table wine 7.51 bottle <strong>of</strong> spirits (whiskey, gin, vodka) 25In <strong>New</strong> Zealand, based on research <strong>do</strong>ne here and overseas, there are some guidelinesthat recommend upper limits for safe drinking. For men it is recommended that theydrink no more than 21 standard drinks per week, with a maximum <strong>of</strong> six in any onesitting. So that means no more than 14 cans <strong>of</strong> beer a week with a maximum <strong>of</strong> fourcans in a sitting. For women the limits are lower with a maximum <strong>of</strong> 14 standarddrinks (14 glasses <strong>of</strong> table wine say) per week and no more than four in one sitting.If you drink more than what is recommended in these guidelines then you drink toomuch. All the men’s problems as listed can occur if you drink more than five standarddrinks per session, two or more times per week. However, given that there isconsiderable variation in the way that alcohol affects individuals, then correspondinglynot everyone will suffer from the same health problems, even if their drinking habitsare the same.Binge and long term excessive drinking can also weaken bones in men. Bone formingcells are prevented from <strong>do</strong>ing their job and calcium, a mineral that helps to hardenbone, is excreted into the urine.As if to add insult to injury, drink more than about 50 handles <strong>of</strong> beer a week for a longtime and men risk becoming more feminine. So the story goes.Now it’s time for women readers to stop laughing. While men seem to think that14


drinking alcohol makes them more <strong>of</strong> a man when in fact it <strong>do</strong>esn’t, However withwomen, science can say the opposite.Many <strong>of</strong> alcohol’s effects on women are also the result <strong>of</strong> it playing around with theproportions <strong>of</strong> oestrogen and testosterone. Yes women too have testosterone. Excessivedrinking especially in alcoholics, can increase the concentration <strong>of</strong> testosterone in theblood and make skin look old, increase waist to hip ratios, make the voice deeper, makethem more aggressive and may increase body hair. Moderate consumption <strong>of</strong> alcoholcan lead to delayed or a lack <strong>of</strong> ovulation and spontaneous abortion, while chronicheavy drinking can stop menstruation. It is difficult to prove a specific effect <strong>of</strong> alcoholon all women as their bodies come under the influence <strong>of</strong> different hormones at differentstages <strong>of</strong> their menstrual cycle.So the next time you decide to have an all night binge with the boys, or with the girlsfor that matter, spare a thought for what you might be <strong>do</strong>ing to your body.THE WALK OF LIFEHands up all the couch potatoes who <strong>do</strong>n’t <strong>do</strong> any exercise in between training sessions<strong>do</strong>wn at the club? The Hillary Commission TV advert tells us that we should be <strong>do</strong>ingsomething active for 30 minutes a day if we are to stay in good shape. If you train onlytwice a week then there’s lots <strong>of</strong> time for you to be <strong>do</strong>ing something else. Thoughtabout walking? Did you go out and <strong>do</strong> it or did you lie <strong>do</strong>wn until the feeling passed?You may have long suspected that walking is good for you so here is some evidence thatit really can get rid <strong>of</strong> those Christmas and <strong>New</strong> Year excesses.Walking <strong>of</strong> any sort, but long walks especially, are good for helping to remove dangerouschemicals from our blood and improve physical fitness. These were the conclusions <strong>of</strong>a study conducted by a team <strong>of</strong> researchers led by Steve Bird, from the department <strong>of</strong>sport and exercise science at Canterbury Christ Church University College in Kent.The study was reported in <strong>New</strong> Scientist (8 January <strong>2000</strong>) magazine.Bird put a group <strong>of</strong> 56 normally inactive people through a programme <strong>of</strong> 18 weeks <strong>of</strong>daily walking. The group was divided into four sub-groups. A long-walking group didwalks <strong>of</strong> between 20 to 40 minutes every day. The “intermediate walkers” did twowalks a day <strong>of</strong> between 10 to 15 minutes. The short walking group did three walks aday <strong>of</strong> 5 to 10 minutes. The last group was the control and did what couch potatoes like<strong>do</strong>ing, as usual.The health and fitness <strong>of</strong> each group was measured at the beginning and end <strong>of</strong> the 18- week period. Bird found that the concentrations <strong>of</strong> “bad fats” in all the walkers hadreduced by the end <strong>of</strong> the study, but the long walkers’ drop was more than twice thereduction in intermediate walkers and five times that in short walkers. Theconcentration <strong>of</strong> these fats stayed the same in the couch potatoes. Long walkers alsoshowed an increase in the concentration <strong>of</strong> “good fats” that help to keep arteriesunblocked and working properly. Clogged arteries contribute toward coronary heartdisease and stroke.15


Tests <strong>of</strong> fitness showed less <strong>of</strong> a distinction between the walking groups. Measurements<strong>of</strong> reductions in heart rate and blood lactate, a chemical that causes fatigue in muscles,were less clear cut but all three walking groups were a lot fitter than the control group.So the message is clear, daily walks can help extend your life. If long walks are notalways possible on your <strong>of</strong>f days in between training, then try leaving your car somedistance from your place <strong>of</strong> work and walking the rest <strong>of</strong> the way. How about walkingduring your lunchtime? And the same goes for school kids. Get Mum to drop you <strong>of</strong>ffurther away from school rather than at the gate. Putting your feet up in front <strong>of</strong> theTV with a bag <strong>of</strong> chips sucks – try the walk <strong>of</strong> life.Skip the Warm UpDon’t bother warming up before training because it won’t stop you from getting injured.So said a news article that made the headlines just before Christmas. The news raiseda few eyebrows and so some explanation was required.The discovery was announced as a result <strong>of</strong> a scientific study conducted by an Armyphysiotherapist. Rod Pope and colleagues, while working out <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Sydneyand Charles Sturt University, conducted a year long study <strong>of</strong> more than 2600 armyrecruits. The group was divided into two, with one group stretching particular legmuscles before exercise while the other did not stretch. The researchers found thatthere was no difference in the injury rates between the two groups.Unfortunately we were not told what type <strong>of</strong> stretching was <strong>do</strong>ne in the trial. Assumingthat the stretching was static then the results probably make sense. Static stretchingis the type where a limb is kept still while the muscle is slowly taken through its fullrange <strong>of</strong> motion. Static stretching can be harmful, as some evidence suggests thatstatic stretching <strong>do</strong>ne before dynamic exercise like <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do movements, can actuallyincrease the chance <strong>of</strong> injury. This is because static stretching relaxes and cools <strong>do</strong>wnmuscles and makes them less responsive to stimulation. This is the complete opposite<strong>of</strong> what we are trying to achieve by <strong>do</strong>ing a warm up, which is preventing injury andpreparing the body for activity.Pope and his colleagues are now telling the army to not bother with stretching.Personally I would qualify that and say not to bother with static stretching during thewarm up, unless someone was chronically tight in a particular muscle. A popular andsafer approach these days is to warm up with dynamic stretching like arm swings andleg swinging. As long as it is <strong>do</strong>ne gently at first, dynamic stretching is better becauseit warms up the muscles with movements that are similar to proper <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Domovements. The correct place for static stretching is during the cool <strong>do</strong>wn phase at theend <strong>of</strong> training, where excited muscles are calmed, stretched and waste productsremoved.Pope’s study was reported <strong>New</strong>Scientist magazine (18 December 1999). Theinvestigation has been accepted for publication in a scientific journal, which meansthat the findings are not to be sneezed at.Mike Lowe16

Thanks to all those who participatedand contributed on the day. It helped make the events run smoothly.Having other members whom we hadn’t seenbefore was great as it took us out <strong>of</strong> ourcomfort zone, and pushed us that little bitfurther than we were used to being pushed.There was a good standard <strong>of</strong> patterns.Sometimes the smallest thing such as thecorrect height for a kick, being the differencebetween winning and not.The sparring was eventful, with a great fightbetween Mr Ian Hayward and Mr MarkTrotter setting the standard <strong>of</strong> the day.The specialist events were a lot <strong>of</strong> fun, withthe flying sidekick competition being my pick<strong>of</strong> the day, with Derek Oldridge <strong>do</strong>ingTaranaki proud.18

Fund-raising the Tae-Bo wayAfter seeing the Billy Blanks advertisements on TV, I thought’ “I can<strong>do</strong> that”.We found out who would be interested, and decided to give it a go.Basically, we found some music that would be suitable for warm upsetc., and put <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do moves to the music.We charge $3 per class. There is an option <strong>of</strong> a $20 concession cardfor 10 classes.A basic programme starts <strong>of</strong>f with a light warm up, rising kicks toget started, then building up the tempo with blocking techniques,kicks, knees etc.As the whole idea was to <strong>do</strong> this for the public, we keep to fairly basictechniques. We have used it in a TKD class situation and used moreadvanced techniques.We warm <strong>do</strong>wn with a stretch, then demonstrate one or two techniquesthat we have used that evening, to show its application. i.e.:wedging block – They then know what they are <strong>do</strong>ing, and generallyperform the techniques better for understanding.It’s a great way to get fit, flexible, have fun and make some moneyfor your club.Kirsten Livingstone<strong>New</strong> Plymouth East Instructor21


Auckland has a go at <strong>Taekwon</strong>-DoLast year, the Auckland Have-A-Go Day was held just a week before Christmas,which kept many <strong>of</strong> the usual punters away. Despite this, about 80 ITFNZ studentsturned out for the early morning combined training session preceding the day.Many students stayed back to help out as punters from around Auckland had a goat kicking pads or breaking boards. We joked and messed around – Have-a-go daysare also a great opportunity to try out new techniques, or hound senior studentsfor the answers to those tricky questions.For the first time in the last three years we were given the prime lunch time spotfor our demonstration. The Auckland Demonstration Team took advantage <strong>of</strong> thegreat black belt turnout to invite former members <strong>of</strong> the team and other seniors toparticipate. This meant that our current repertoire <strong>of</strong> breaks and items wascomplemented with old favourites such as Mr Andrew Niven and Mr Francis Fong’sself defence skit, – which they quickly recalled and rehearsed after more than ayear and a half’s absence!By early afternoon we were all feeling very lethargic. Fortunately, Mr Arthur Atutahiarrived. His enthusiasm motivated us to get back on our feet. Mr Atutahi soon hadanother training session going for over a <strong>do</strong>zen students and punters.The day wrapped up successfully, with many <strong>of</strong> us crossing the <strong>do</strong>main to enjoy MrJames Rimmer’s performance at “Christmas in the Park”, along with thousands <strong>of</strong>other Aucklanders.The Auckland Have A Go Day is held in the <strong>do</strong>main every December. The AucklandDemonstration Team and other ITFNZ students also participate in Have A GoDays at the Manukau Velodrome, Long Bay Reserve and Orewa Beach in lateFebruary and early March.The Auckland Demonstration Team is currently in need <strong>of</strong> new members. Trialswill be held soon after the Auckland North and Counties Manukau RegionalTournaments. The team is open to all grades. Regional Reports...WAI/BOP/TARANAKIA big thank you to Mr. Davidson and Mr. Rimmer and their team <strong>of</strong> helpers forputting on a fantastic World Camp. Even though there was a lack <strong>of</strong> overseasparticipants I believe that everyone had a great time and enjoyed the presence <strong>of</strong>Master Wheatley.On behalf <strong>of</strong> the Wai/BOP/Taranaki region I would like to thank all the ITFNZstudents who attended the camp and made it so successful.As you can tell from the name our region is quite spread out and it has recentlyspread even further with the opening <strong>of</strong> our newest club, Stratford <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do(South Taranaki), under Instructor Mr Ian Hayward, I Dan. Many Auckland peoplewill know Mr Hayward as he was very active in your region for a long time andwas the instructor <strong>of</strong> the Hillsborough club.The membership within our region is steadily growing and none more so than inTauranga were Mr. Rimmer has been averaging classes around the 40 students.On one particular night he had a class <strong>of</strong> 62 students. Unheard <strong>of</strong> in my time at theTauranga club. Here in Taranaki our student membership is pretty healthy. The<strong>New</strong> Plymouth East club (Instructor Mrs. Kirsten Livingstone) is the largest clubwith around 30 students. The <strong>New</strong> Plymouth Club closed <strong>do</strong>wn at the end <strong>of</strong> 1999and has been replaced by the Westown TKD club.Planned events for this year:• 16 April: Refs & Judges seminar. It gives us a chance to spend a bit <strong>of</strong> time together andget to know each other.We have changed the format <strong>of</strong> our Regionals slightly to include sparring,destruction & theory test for all grades. This was a brain wave <strong>of</strong> Mr. Rimmer’s and is awarded to the club whichdisplays the tenets <strong>of</strong> TKD and, <strong>of</strong> course, those other facets <strong>of</strong> a good martialartist.Over the course <strong>of</strong> this year we shall be bringing you instructor pr<strong>of</strong>iles from withinour region and we are starting <strong>of</strong>f with Mr. Rimmer in the next issue. [Happy birthday Nathan]Three colour belt gradings, one with Mr Paul McPhail, and we are honoured tohave two <strong>of</strong> the gradings taken by Mr Graham Patterson.Umpires course in Christchurch on the 15/4/<strong>2000</strong>.Regionals are to also be hosted by Christchurch some time in May or June.South Island will have a strong team to go to Wellington for the Nationals in July.Dunedin are to host the Techniques and Instructors courses on the 30/9/<strong>2000</strong> and1/10/<strong>2000</strong>.The regional camp still has to have a date and venue organised, but we like toleave that one to later in the year.The last event <strong>of</strong> the year will be the Black Belt grading in Greymouth on 2nd and3rd <strong>of</strong> December.Financially the eight clubs have an equal split <strong>of</strong> the promotional money for thetwelve month period.24

WELLINGTONWell, all <strong>of</strong> the clubs in the region are back into full swing now following the <strong>New</strong>Years break.One <strong>of</strong> the features <strong>of</strong> the year (already) was the World Camp in Ngaruawahia, awell-organised and carefully thought-out event. A thank you goes to MessrsDavidson and Rimmer and their band <strong>of</strong> assistants for running the camp. I canfully recommend participation at such events in the future to everyone.The first grading round for the year will soon be upon us, so that will be starting tooccupy the minds <strong>of</strong> the majority <strong>of</strong> students in the region. A novelty will be ournew Regional Examiner, Mr Davidson, who I am sure will bring his own flavour tothe event. I wish the best <strong>of</strong> luck to all involved.Not far beyond that - the Wellington Regional Tournament is also due, beingorganised this year by Brooklyn club’s Emma Ashman. This is everyone’sopportunity to try out for the team to represent Wellington at the NationalTournament, so I encourage everyone to be involved.The annual Wellington Region Winter Camp is booked for June at Camp Akatarawain the Akatarawa Valley - well known for it’s morning frosts and freezing river (it’sall good!).As most <strong>of</strong> you will already be aware, the Epsom National Tournament will be heldin Wellington this year in July. It will be a lot <strong>of</strong> hard work to top the efforts <strong>of</strong> lastyear’s tournament, but we will see what we can <strong>do</strong>!The last quarter <strong>of</strong> the year will see our annual Junior Tournament, a well-supportedevent for tournament novice white to green stripes.So, with these and other events coming up there should be enough to keep everyonemotivated.I look forward to seeing you all in Wellington in July and thank you in advance foryour support with this year’s Nationals.26


COUNTIES MANUKAUCounties Manukau had a very full year last year and has a lot <strong>of</strong> activities plannedfor this year. A large number <strong>of</strong> these are combined activities with are closeneighbours, Auckland North.We finished 1999 with an Auckland North / Counties Manukau combined trainingthat coincided with the Eta Have-a-Go-Day in the Auckland Domain and beganthe year with the Freshup Have-a-Go-Day in Manukau, followed our first EpsonUnder 18 Tournament. We have three <strong>of</strong> these tournaments scheduled this yearand they are complemented by the two planned Adult Tournaments.CM have members trialling for the Junior World Champs in Korea this year. Theirtraining has been under way since early in the new year.The Auckland Demonstration Team has been very busy this year with fourdemonstrations in February, further ones in March and some already organisedfor later in the year. The greater percentage <strong>of</strong> team members are drawn from theCounties Manukau Region.We are looking forward to the National Tournament in Wellington and plan toretain the rather large trophy we currently have on display.Please feel free to enter any <strong>of</strong> the planned tournaments (dates are in the <strong>2000</strong>calendar). NG4‘th Dan, President <strong>of</strong> ITFNZ, NZ Martial ArtsHall <strong>of</strong> FameAt age 61, Mr N.Y.Ng came out <strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong> Doretirement to take up the Presidency <strong>of</strong> ITFNZ.While there are many in the martial art scene,who strive for higher rank this 4 th Dan BlackBelt is more interested in unity and betterment<strong>of</strong> all martial art in general, and <strong>Taekwon</strong> Do inparticular. He was never concerned aboutachieving a higher rank.Born in Taishan, China, he became a <strong>New</strong>Zealander in 1960 when he was an engineeringstudent at the University <strong>of</strong> Canterbury. Aftergaining registration as a pr<strong>of</strong>essional engineer, he took up a lecturing post at theUniversity <strong>of</strong> Malaya in Kuala Lumpur.In 1966, he joined Master Low Koon Lin’s <strong>Taekwon</strong> Do class in Petaling Jaya.After three and half years training, he was awarded 1 st Dan Black Belt byGrandmaster Nam Tae Hi who was, at the time, General Choi Hong Hi’s righthand man, Chief Instructor for Singapore and Malayasia, and President <strong>of</strong> Asia<strong>Taekwon</strong> Do <strong>Federation</strong>.In 1970 Mr Ng returned to <strong>New</strong> Zealand to start a career in the electricity industryin Palmerston North. He started the Palmerston North <strong>Taekwon</strong> <strong>do</strong> Academy. Aftermore than 30 years, the Academy still maintains its numerical strength as one <strong>of</strong>the foremost branch within <strong>International</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong> Do Foundation <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> Zealand(ITFNZ).The Levin branch he started in 1974 is still flourishing. Many <strong>of</strong> his students havebecome instructors, starting clubs in many parts <strong>of</strong> the country.During the early 1970’s <strong>Taekwon</strong> Do was unheard <strong>of</strong>f and he expended a great deal<strong>of</strong> energy promoting it. He gave numerous demonstrations and advertisedextensively all over Manawatu and as far afield as Hawkes Bay. He liaised withkarate groups and assisted in refereeing in multiple style karate tournaments atthe Highland Games in Hastings.28


During the last 30 years, he has been a successful instructor actively fosteringrelations with other martial arts groups, maintaining a high standard <strong>of</strong> teachingand discipline and always instilling in his students the importance <strong>of</strong> the “Tenets<strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong> Do” – Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control and In<strong>do</strong>mitableSpirit.During this period, he notched up a number <strong>of</strong> pioneering endeavours, whichcontinue to be used by ITFNZ.· In the mid 1970’s, he made contact with a Korean instructor from Sydney andwas instrumental in getting ITF clubs to affiliate with the Australianorganisation. In 1989, he was also among one <strong>of</strong> the most senior instructorswho supported dis-affiliation from the same organisation.· A founding member <strong>of</strong> ITFNZ, which was formed in March 1981 to run andpromote ITF <strong>Taekwon</strong> <strong>do</strong> in <strong>New</strong> Zealand. He was the Foundation’s firstTreasurer. This organisation continues to gather strength in student numbers,improving standards, updating teaching methods and promoting excellence in<strong>Taekwon</strong> Do throughout <strong>New</strong> Zealand.· He believes that students should have the opportunity to gauge their in<strong>do</strong>mitablespirit, competitiveness and the application <strong>of</strong> techniques. He initiated localand regional <strong>Taekwon</strong> tournaments in the latter part <strong>of</strong> 1970’s culminating inorganising the first National ITFNZ <strong>Taekwon</strong> Do Tournament, in PalmerstonNorth, in 1981.He was the organiser <strong>of</strong> the first Oceania Training Camp held at MasseyUniversity in 1978, thus setting the standards for subsequent National andWorld Camps. It was the first occasion <strong>Taekwon</strong> Do hit the TV <strong>New</strong>s. FROM THE <strong>WORLD</strong> <strong>CAMP</strong>Why <strong>do</strong> we say “<strong>Taekwon</strong>” when we bow?Someone asked this at the World Camp question-and-answer session. Although itbrought out some interesting trivia, nobody really had the answer.By coincidence, General Choi himself answered the question in an interview with<strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do Times (Vol 20 No 1, January <strong>2000</strong>).When our art was developing into maturity it was known by many names, includingTang Soo, Kong Soo and Kwon Bub. An advisory committee was established tounify the art under a single name. On 11 April 1955, the committee accepted thename submitted by General Choi: “<strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do”. To spread the new name throughexisting schools (many <strong>of</strong> which were in the military), General Choi ordered<strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do soldiers to say “<strong>Taekwon</strong>” when they bowed to each other.This has been the <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do tradition ever since, although the practice was lostin <strong>New</strong> Zealand until a few years ago.Your instructor has a copy <strong>of</strong> the January <strong>2000</strong> issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>Taekwon</strong>-Do Times.
