A Message From The Pastor1 Corinthians 12:4-7 “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them ineveryone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”A couple weeks ago I had a meeting at a church in Ben Avon near Pittsburgh. When I walked through the doorthe first thing I saw was a mountain of backpacks. I thought that the church must be having Bible School thisweek. However, I learned later that they were backpacks full of school supplies that had been purchased bythe members of that church to be delivered to young people in the Wilkinsburg area that cannot afford newbackpacks for the beginning of the school year. The 1 Corinthians passage tells us we each have gifts and talents. There must have been 30-40 backpackson that pile which means 30-40 students will enter school on the first day with some tools they might need tonourish their individual gifts. Could that equipped backpack and the note of encouragement found inside bethe catalyst to spawn a young author, or poet, or artist, or mathematician, or English teacher, or pastor, ornurse, or doctor? The possibilities are endless. One life can touch so many lives without knowing it!We may think our gifts and talents are minimal, but when shared and enhanced by the Spirit of God they canmanifest into glorious things beyond our imagination. Whatever your God given gift and talent, share it! TheSpirit will guide it! Many will be blessed!Pastor LindaWorship Schedule and Scriptures for September 2008The Heritage - 9 a.m.; The Villas - 10 a.m.; The Ridgewood - 11 a.m.September 7, 2008 Seventeenth Sunday After PentecostScriptures: Exodus 12:1-14; Romans 13:8-14; Matthew 18:15-20Pastor Glenn Sadler will lead all three worship services.September 14, 2008 Eighteenth Sunday After PentecostScriptures: Exodus 14:19-31; Romans 14:1-12; Matthew 18:21-35Pastor Glenn Sadler will lead the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. worship services.Pastor Linda Miller-Pretz will lead the 10:00 a.m. worship service. The St. Leaving a Legacy - Points to consider in planning an estateHow: Gift planning offers a number of options. One is a bequest through a will or living trust. Another isthrough a gift that reserves lifetime income for the donor or a family member. This option offers some taxbenefits today for a gift that the charity may not realize until sometime in the future. Immediate cash or gifts ofproperty may also suit a donor’s plans. Donors need to consider what is the best option in their situations tomake a truly meaningful contribution while maintaining financial security and gaining the maximum tax rewards. What: Tax treatments may vary based on the type of gift that one gives. For instance, if highly appreciatedsecurities, owned for one-year or more, are used to make a gift, the donor may deduct the original cost, alongwith any “profit” or appreciation in the stock’s value. When gifting a stock, the donor also avoids the capitalgains tax that would normally be charged. Mutual funds & other types of property can offer similar tax benefits. When: Some donors make gifts at year-end to seek a tax deduction. Others time charitable contributions torecognize a significant event in their lives or the lives of others. In some cases a very profitable business yearor other sudden increase in income may trigger a significant gift. A practical time to consider a meaningfulcontribution is in conjunction with planning an estate. This may be done through one’s will, a living trust orthrough the designation of a beneficiary on an insurance policy or retirement account.Events that may trigger the thought of a significant gift may include: Selling investments at a profit, making oramending a will or establishing a living trust, maturing of low-interest CDs, or bonds, naming or updatingbeneficiaries of pension plans or life insurance. Before proceeding with these and similar activities, it isadvisable to consult a financial advisor.
