Transition Planned for the Gardens NeighborhoodAfter much care and consideration, a change was proposed Monday, April 6 th , that would change theGardens from an area designated solely for residents with dementia to a general care unit.Prior to our move to The Villas in 2005, the former Health Center had a 48-resident neighborhood called 4 thSpecial Therapy. At that time, the unit cared for residents with early, middle and late-stage dementia. Ofcourse, the needs of the residents were very different between those with early-stage and those who werein the later-stages. So, our thought at the time was to create 2 units for the new building: a 24-bed unit forthose in the early stages known as The Meadows and a 42-bed unit for those in the middle-to-late stagesknown as The Gardens. This thus restricted 66 out of our 192 rooms for dementia care.In reality, we created a set of criteria that defined who could be admitted to each of these 2 units. When aroom became available, if we had no outside referrals who qualified based on the criteria, we then searchedin-house for residents eligible for residency there. The increasing challenge however, is that unless thereis a behavioral issue or health or safety concern, these residents and/or their families are reluctant to move. With this change, as vacancies arise within the Gardens neighborhood, new admissions coming to theGardens neighborhood may or may not have dementia. It will be open to all general admissions just as ourWillows, Springs and Orchards neighborhoods are. So, it will not be an abrupt change, but will be moresubtle changing over time. The most immediate change that you have likely noticed is that the Gardens neighborhood is no longer“locked” 24/7 beginning on Monday, April 13, 2009. Like all our other neighborhoods, it still is equipped withthe “Secure Care System” which means that any resident identified at risk for leaving the facility or wanderinginto unsafe areas would be fitted with a secure care anklet which would lock down or otherwise activatealarms on the doors that would alert staff if they approached any of the doors. The Meadows neighborhood will remain a locked unit, designated for residents in the early stages ofdementia. We have always been committed to serving residents who struggle with this disease and as aresult, do exhibit wandering or other potentially disruptive behavior or are at high risk of “elopement”. Wewant to continue to provide a location specific to their needs. In order to keep this neighborhood availablefor residents with these challenges, there will be a time when the interdisciplinary team will recommend thata resident no longer meets the criteria for residency on the Meadows. As such, the family will be notifiedwhen a room becomes available elsewhere in the facility. Previously, this move was usually exclusively tothe Gardens, but now will be to any neighborhood including Willows, Gardens, Springs or Orchards. Ofcourse, the possibility remains that residents on other units may see a progression of dementia and beginto exhibit behavioral or wandering challenges that necessitate a move to the Meadows.Again, we want our families and staff to understand that while we take every step to minimize residentmoves within the facility, we cannot eliminate them entirely. Managing residents with infections who haveisolation protocols continue to be of significant challenge to us. Also, moves may be required for behavioralreasons and/or due to health and safety reasons such as elopement risks as noted above. Less frequently, roommate conflicts necessitate moves. We try very hard to minimize the need for resident moves; however, there are simply some times that they cannot be avoided. We appreciate the understanding of our residents, families and staff when such moves are necessary. Please feel free to contact Tammy Lininger, Administrator, with any questions you may have related to this change.7

A Message from the PastorDear Friends of St. Paul’s:Scripture and tradition tells that what we sow we reap. My experience tells me that is really true! Someof us are planting gardens at this time of year. We expect that if we plant vegetable seeds the propervegetable plants will grow and they will produce the kinds of vegetables that we expect. The sameholds true for flowers. Last fall we planted a variety of bulbs. This spring there is evidence that ourexpectations are being met.I would like to suggest that this month we all make an extra effort to plant seeds of kindness, joy, love, patience, gratitude, helpfulness, friendliness and cheerfulness. If we do, I believe we will be rewardedbeyond our greatest expectations with a bountiful harvest. May our God bless you in your journey thisspring!Pastor GlennWorship Schedule and Scriptures for May 20099 a.m. The Heritage Fellowship Hall and Channel 36; 10 a.m. The Villas FrC and Channel 35;11a.m. The Ridgewood Harmony Hall. Leaving a Legacy - Points to consider in planning an estateLeaving a legacy is a way to continue to impact family, friends and favorite charities while assuring thatyour estate plan is complete. On May 10 we honor Mom for all that she means to us and all that she has done for us. Then on June 21it is Dad’s turn to be in the spotlight. One way to recognize parents, grandparents and others who havehad a significant impact on our lives is through a gift in honor or memory of them to St. Paul’s.While flowers brighten up a room, they soon wither and die and are gone. And most Dads aren’t disappointedif they don’t get another tie.Gifts made to St. Paul’s in memory or honor of someone are acknowledged to the honoree, or in the caseof a memorial gift, to whomever the donor requests. These gifts are used by St. Paul’s to assist residentswho are unable to afford the total cost of their care, or if so designated, to the donor’s choice. In this way,a gift given in honor or memory of Mom, Dad, or anther special person benefits two persons, the onerecognized and the resident who is helped.Additional information on gifts given in honor or memory of a loved one, as well as information on variousplanned giving opportunities, is available by contacting Bill Kirker in the Development Office in the KeiferBuilding, 724-588-9613, ext. 1349. Information is also available on other life income plans.St. Paul’s Annual Garage Sale And Car Wash - June 19, 2009St. Senior Corner: Memorial DayMemorial Day is a day of memories which brings upthe end of the month. It’s a day to honor our fallenheroes on the last Monday in May. First calledDecoration Day, it was observed on May 30 th , 1868to honor those who died in the American Civil War.Later, after WW1, the intent was to honor any and allAmericans who died fighting any war. It’s known asthe unofficial kick-off to summer, picnics, BBQ’s, etc.It is a special time to put “Old Man Winter” to sleep. It is not a day of division but about reconciliation, coming together to honor those who gave their all.In 1915, inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields”,Moina Michael replied with her own poem:We cherish too, the Poppy redThat grows on fields where valor led,It seems to signal to the skiesThat blood of heroes never dies. She was also 1 st to wear a red poppy and got theidea to sell them and used the collected money forwar orphaned children and widowed women. Shortlybefore Memorial Day, 1922, the VFW became thefirst veteran’s organization to nationally sell poppies.Hence the birth of the artificial poppies made bydisabled veterans continued on the tradition. In 1951 the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts ofSt. Louis placed flags on 150,000 graves atJefferson Barracks National Cemetery as a turn ofgood faith. This is a tradition that continues on today. To help re-educate and remind Americans of the truemeaning of Memorial Day, the “National Moment ofRemembrance” resolution was passed in Dec. 2000which asks that at 3 p.m. all Americans to informallyobserve in their own way a moment of remembranceand respect, pausing from whatever they are doingfor a moment of silence or listening to “Taps”. Let’sfly our flags, celebrate, never forget our fallen heroes. They are why we are free. Food for thought: Lifeisn’t fair but life IS good.
