Greetings,
As Mayor of the City and County of Denver, it is my pleasure to
welcome the world-renowned CowParade to the Mile High City.
While CowParade has been produced in more than 25 cities around
the world, Denver’s CowParade refl ects the energy and excitement
of the Mile High City. From our landmarks to our hometown sports
teams to our local “moovers” and shakers, each cow captures a
different aspect of Denver’s history and culture.
Not only do we have the opportunity to enjoy these colorful
fi berglass bovines while they graze our streets as public art, the
cows’ impact will be felt long after they leave. Through the public
auction after the conclusion of the public display, CowParade has
the potential to raise approximately $500,000 for dozens of local
charitable organizations including Denver’s Road Home, our 10year
plan to end homelessness, and CowParde nonprofi t partners
such as The Children’s Museum of Denver, The Denver Zoo , the
Cherry Creek Arts Festival and the Denver Foundation’s Eagle Fund.
We hope you enjoy the “udderly” unique partnership among our
local artists, nonprofi t organizations and business community.
Sincerely,
John W. Hickenlooper
Mayor of the City and County of Denver
Welcome to the friendly cows of Denver.
On behalf of all our employees in the Colorado region, United
Airlines is proud to be the title sponsor of CowParade Denver
2006. We encourage you to invite your friends and family to
see this one-of-a-kind public art event. Artists from throughout
our Front Range have let their spirits soar in the creation of
world-class works of art. This is a must-see event!
We believe that supporting culture and the arts enriches
the lives of everyone in a community. That is why United is
sponsoring 15 cows in the herd. We also are honored to
support the local charitable organizations which are the direct
benefi ciaries of CowParade. Our support of CowParade has a
single goal: to make the world a better place for our customers
and employees to live, work, travel and do business.
Sincerely,
HOLY HEIFER,
IT’S A COWPARADE!
What you need to know about
CowParade Denver 2006
Howdy pardners, cowboys and cowgirls.
Welcome to CowParade Denver 2006!
If you’re in the know, then you’re way ahead of the herd. Stash
these quick facts in your hip pockets – or overalls – and hoof it
on out to CowParade Denver 2006. It’s the world’s original and
largest public art display of life-sized fi berglass cows transformed
into colorful and whimsical works of art. You’ll be transfi xed by
these moo-velous bovine beauties.
What is CowParade Denver?
The parade of cows features approximately 100 heifers painted
by local artists and sponsored by local businesses. This public
art event is free and this is the fi rst and only appearance in
Denver. It will turn our streets into a forum for public art, creativity
and innovation. You’ll discover a variety of artistic styles from
brightly painted cows, to cows covered in mosaic tiles, to cows
transformed into unusual and fun designs.
CowParade has made historic stops in such “rural” communities
as Paris, London, Florence, Barcelona, Zurich, Prague, Tokyo,
Sydney, Moscow (no pun intended), Mexico City, New York,
Chicago and Houston – all “cow towns,” to be sure.
Where can you view these beautiful bovines?
The cows can be seen grazing in various “pastures” throughout
metro Denver. Stroll the streets at your leisure to stop, admire,
contemplate and giggle at these great creations.
“Pasture hosts” include Downtown Denver with special “watering
holes” on 16th Street Mall, Larimer Square, Tabor Center, Writer
Square and Denver Pavilions. Other herds can be seen throughout
the Cherry Creek North Shopping District, Cherry Creek Shopping
Center and in the Stapleton community. Please refer to the
enclosed map for de-”tails.”
When can you see these cows?
Cows can be seen grazing throughout Denver from
July 21 through October 18. More than one million
“cow-afi cionados,” as well as real and urban cowboys
and cowgirls, are expected to see these eclectic
works of art.
But, wait...there is moo-re!
At the conclusion of CowParade Denver 2006, live and online
auctions are held to sell the cows. You, too, can own a cow! The
auctions benefi t such local charities as The Children’s Museum of
Denver, Cherry Creek Arts Festival, The Denver Zoo, and the
Eagle Fund of the Denver Foundation. Please see related story
for more details.
What’s moo-re, each cow sponsor will designate a nonprofi t of its
choice to receive a portion of the auction proceeds.
A primary purpose of CowParade Denver 2006 is to raise moo-la,
and lots of it, for well-deserving charities. The goal is $500,000.
All proceeds will go to support the charities.
What is the history of this herd hoopla?
The fi rst CowParade was held in Zurich in 1998 and it attracted
more than one million visitors from throughout Europe. The
exhibit moo-ved to Chicago in 1999, where 300 cows grazed the
pastures of the Windy City. That parade attracted more than two
million visitors, contributed $250 million to the city’s economy, and
raised more than $3 million for local nonprofi ts. More than 400
cows were herded to New York in 2000 with similar results. In the
last fi ve years, CowParade has appeared in more than 25 cities
worldwide.
CowParade Denver 2006 is organized and managed by
CowParade Holdings, LLC and produced locally by Creative
Strategies Group, the region’s leading sponsorship and event
marketing agency specializing in festivals and special events.
CowParade Denver 2006 is presented by United Airlines,
sponsored by Forest City Stapleton in association with the
Colorado Beef Council and supported by Macy’s.
COWPARADE
GRAZING GUIDE
Larimer Arts Association for
the Cows in Schools program
Larimer Arts Association (LAA) was selected to conduct this year’s
“Cows in Schools” program as part of its fourth installation of the
internationally award-winning Project LEAD (LARIMER presents
EMERGING ARTISTS of DENVER). More than 400 middle school
students in Denver Public Schools (DPS) collaborated on the creation
cows to be showcased in an unprecedented way – suspended from
the wire system over Larimer Square. This is the fi rst “fl ying cow”
display ever undertaken in the history of CowParade.
What is Project LEAD?
Project LEAD gives young artists the experience of showing their
art in downtown public venues and to be recognized for their
emerging talents. The
Larimer Arts Association,
in conjunction with Denver
Public Schools, annually
commissions art projects
for public display, and
provides arts programs
with art supplies and
expertise for curricula to
augment funding shortfalls
and provide direction in
new mediums.
Participation
Fifteen art classes from 12 Denver Public Schools and one DPS
“superintendent team” headed by Michael Bennett transformed the
cows, known as “mini-moos” – as each one is one-third the size of
the cows in CowParade, weighing in at 30 pounds and measuring
four feet long by three feet high – into incredible works of art. Work
on the mini-moo collection began in February with students from
across all quadrants of the DPS district:
• Lake Middle School
• Skinner Middle School
• Centennial K-8
• Greenlee K-8
• Kaiser K-6
• Denver School
of the Arts (3 cows)
• Bruce Randolph Middle
School
• Kunsmiller Middle School
• Kepner Middle School
• Place Middle School
• Slavens K-8
• Grant Middle School
• Superintendent team headed
by Michael Bennett
Educational Outcomes
Under the guidance of Michael Rieger, art director for LAA, owner of
Lapis Gallery and recipient of numerous awards for arts education,
each participating team carefully created each mini-moo’s identity
– giving each a name, identity and personal story. Each class was
required to articulate
its theme and provide
written accounts of
why they selected it,
what they learned from
the project, and other
accounts to enhance the
educational landscape of
the program.
16 17
18
Issue and
Community Impact
Many middle and high
schools’ arts programs
and materials have been
drastically reduced to
address DPS budget
shortfalls. Through
other programming such
as Project LEAD, LAA
is poised to offer arts
options to those schools
that lack such resources.
It is the core belief of LAA that exposure to the arts aids in many
other areas of education and a child’s growth. Its initiatives were
developed with the knowledge that a well-rounded education is the
cornerstone for success and will improve the quality of life for those
in the community.
