man FREQUENCY AND HIGH POTENTIAL CURRENTS. 287more turns in the primary, for we arrive at the conclusion thatthe best way is to work with one single turn though we mustsometimes depart from this rule and we must get along withwhatever inductive effect we can obtain with one turn. But beforeone has long experimented with the extreme frequencies requiredto set up in a small bulb an electromotive force of severalthousands of volts, one realizes the great importance of electrostaticeffects, and these effects grow relatively to the electro-dynamicin significanceas the frequencyis increased.Kow, if anything is desirable in this case, it is to increase thefrequency, and this would make it still worse for the electrodynamiceffects. On the other hand, it is easy to exalt the electrostaticaction as far as one likes by taking more turns on thesecondary, or combining self-induction and capacity to raise thepotential. It should also be remembered that, in reducing thethe current to the smallest value and increasing the potential, the electric impulses of high frequency can be more easily transmittedthrough a conductor. These and similar thoughts determined me todevote more attention to the electrostatic phenomena, and to endeavor to producepotentials as high as possible, and alternating as fast asthey could be made to alternate. I then found that I could excitevacuum tubes at considerable distance from a conductorconnected to a properly constructed coil, and that I could, byconverting the oscillatory current of a conductor to a higher potential, establish electrostatic alternating fields which actedthrough the whole extent of the room, lighting up a tube nomatter where it was held in space. I thought I recognized thatI had made a step in advance, and I have persevered in this line ;but I wish to say that I share with all lovers of science and progressthe one and only desire to reach a result of utility to menin any direction to which thought or experiment may lead me.I think that this departure is the right one, for I cannot see, from the observation of the phenomena which manifest themselvesas the frequency is increased, what there would remain toact between two circuits conveying, for instance, impulses ofseveral hundred millions per second, except electrostatic forces.Even with such trifling frequencies the energy would be practicallyall potential, and my conviction has grown strong that, to whateverkind of motion light may be due, it is produced by tremendouselectrostatic stresses vibrating with extreme rapidity.
