HIGH FREQUENCY AND HIGH POTENTIAL CURRENTS 361movable particles around the button. In this case it is also ascertained, that the filament in the small globe 5 is less deterioratedwhen maintained a certain length of time at incandescence. Thisis a necessary consequence of the fact that the gas in the smallbulb becomes strongly heated and therefore a very good conductor, and less work is then performed on the button, since thebombardment becomes less intense as the conductivity of the gasincreases. In this construction, of course, the small bulb becomesvery hot and when it reaches an elevated temperature the convectionand radiation on the outside increase. On another occasionI have shown bulbs in which this drawback was largelyavoided. In these instances a very small bulb, containing a re-and the space be-fractory button, was mounted in a large globeFIG. 193. FIG. 194.tween the walls of both was highly exhausted. The outer largeglobe remained comparatively cool in such constructions. Whenthe large globe was on the pump and the vacuum between thewalls maintained permanent by the continuous action of thepump, the outer globe would remain quite cold, while the buttonin the small bulb was kept at incandescence. But when the sealwas made, and the button in the small bulb maintained incandescentsome length of time, the large globe too would becomewarmed. From this I conjecturethat if vacuous space (as Prof.Dewar finds) cannot convey heat, it is so merely in virtue of ourrapid motion through space or, generally speaking, by the moti nof the medium relativelyto us, for a permanent condition could
