projectsAlcohol In<strong>for</strong>mation ProjectThe Alcohol In<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>for</strong> At-Risk Groups Project, funded by theVictorian Department of <strong>Health</strong>, spread culturally-appropriate healthpromotion messages among members of Arabic, Polish, Spanish, Sudaneseand Vietnamese-speaking communities. Working together with Turning PointAlcohol and Drug Agency, MCWH promoted and delivered small groupalcohol education sessions across the five language communities and assistedin the development and translation of the community language brochures,Cheers? Alcohol and Your Family, on the basis of extensive consultation withthe communities.Using the brochures as an educational tool, 31 education sessions wereconducted with 520 participants. Following feedback from the community,alcohol in<strong>for</strong>mation was incorporated into existing health education modulesabout ‘healthy living’, an approach which enabled open discussion aboutalcohol within the cultural contexts and avoiding the stigma usually associatedwith alcohol use.For more in<strong>for</strong>mation and the Cheers? brochures visit:http://www.mcwh.com.au/healthprom/alcoholproject.phpMCWH Bilingual <strong>Health</strong> Educators, Project Workers,and Alcohol In<strong>for</strong>mation Project Advisory GroupRisky Drinking ProjectFunded by the Victorian Department of <strong>Health</strong>, and conducted inpartnership with Turning Point Alcohol and Drug <strong>Centre</strong>, and theNorthern Division of GPs, the Risky Drinking Project conducts researchand community engagement and education on the topic of alcohol useamong selected immigrant and refugee communities over three years.MCWH is implementing the community engagement and educationcomponent of the project, encouraging people from the selectedcommunities to see their local GPs about alcohol-related issues.16
