<strong>Lawton</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> <strong>Activities</strong> <strong>at</strong> a <strong>glance</strong>1. Alliance for a Healthier Gener<strong>at</strong>ion – All of the <strong>Lawton</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> signed up to be involved inthis program. The program is going strong in many schools. We have two schools th<strong>at</strong> met the criteria forN<strong>at</strong>ional Recognition and will travel to New York City this summer to an awards ceremony. Help isneeded in the H.S. for youth to be on the School Wellness Councils. Focus of the AHG is on 8 areas:1) Policy/Systems 2) School Meals3) Physical Educ<strong>at</strong>ion 4) Physical Activity5) School Employee Wellness 6) Health Educ<strong>at</strong>ion7) Competitive Foods and Beverages 8) Before and/or After School Programs2. Polar Heart R<strong>at</strong>e Monitors – 10 schools Heart R<strong>at</strong>e Monitors. The HRM gives feedback on howlong a student is staying in the target heart r<strong>at</strong>e zone to help ensure the students are exercising <strong>at</strong> theirindividual paces.<strong>Schools</strong> Involved:Carriage HillsClevelandSwinneyGeronimo RoadPark LaneSullivan VillageWilsonTomlinson MiddleEisenhower MiddleCentral MiddleNew Wii Equipment has been provided for the schools to give them a boost toward a different kind offitness activity.3. Tri-Fit Assessment machines are being used as a PRE and POST assessment by Elem. <strong>Schools</strong> and aPRE and POST assessment each semester for our middle schools. (4 th year for Elementary and 3rd yearfor all Middle <strong>Schools</strong>).The above schools will be using the Tri-Fit plus MacArthur Middle.4. FitnessGram fitness testing is taking place in all of the Elem. <strong>Schools</strong> and Middle <strong>Schools</strong>. We havebeen very fortun<strong>at</strong>e to have the OSU Extension provided our schools with the FitnessGram AssessmentManuals for all 26 Elem. <strong>Schools</strong>.5. CATCH KID’S Program- This program was implemented in 2009-10 in the After School ExtendedDay programs. This will be a 3 year project. We have 12 CATCH schools and 12 non CATCH schools.We are collecting d<strong>at</strong>a to determine if the extra 30 minute program will make a difference in the BMI’s ofchildren. Extended Day schools are using the CATCH Nutrition <strong>Activities</strong> which is once or twice aweek. They are also doing an Activity for fitness daily from the CATCH curriculum.All the 3 rd , 4 th and 5 th grade students’ are given a Pre and Post written assessment on Nutrition andPhysical Activity each year. Non Extended Day <strong>Schools</strong> have a m<strong>at</strong>ching group of students th<strong>at</strong> take thePre and Post test too.6. Safe Routes to School- Three of our elementary schools Whittier, Swinney and Hugh Bish are doingthis program.7. YMCA 6 th hour PE Coach Melvin Hoskins is the <strong>LPS</strong> teacher in charge. Many students takeadvantage of this H.S. program. Fitness Assessment is done by the YMCA staff as a PRE and POSTassessment. Physical fitness classes in spinning, weight lifting, zumba, Pil<strong>at</strong>es, Yoga,8. Food Services (school breakfast and lunch)- They made healthy changes in our schools this year-Recently dessert was taken off the menu. Farm to schools will begin when the farmers have the foodsupply for us again. F<strong>at</strong>-free milks, and f<strong>at</strong>-free salad dressing have been provided.


9. <strong>Lawton</strong> Food 4 Kids- Continues in the 26 elementary schools. Approxim<strong>at</strong>ely 500 students arebeing serviced.10. Comanche County Memorial Hospital- All 4 th grade students received their own pedometer andthe students th<strong>at</strong> maintained 10,000 steps every day for the 6 weeks will go to the YMCA for a fun day ofactivity and food.11. Archery in the <strong>Schools</strong>- Ten teachers certified and teaching in 3 rd -8 th grades.12. USTA (Tennis) - Training was given to 13 teachers in November. USTA don<strong>at</strong>ed one standard andnet and much needed equipment to our district to get Tennis started in our district.13. 24/7 School District – <strong>Lawton</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> adopted the 24/7 tobacco free policy in November2010.14. Alliance for a Healthier Gener<strong>at</strong>ion- Our third <strong>Lawton</strong> school, Swinney, received the Bronze medalfor making changes in their schools toward a healthier gener<strong>at</strong>ion of children and workplace for schoolpersonnel. Cleveland Elem. and Wilson Elem. received this recognition in 2009-10. Our Goal is to get10 schools during the 2011-12 school year. Health Educ<strong>at</strong>ion was incorpor<strong>at</strong>ed back into the curriculumfor this award to be achieved. They teachers had to make up their own health curriculum and scope andsequence. Many school facilities are involved in fitness activities for their faculty in a before or afterschool program.15. Learn and Serve Grant- Central Middle School and MacArthur Middle School are recipients of a“Learn and Serve” grant. This grant was written with the intentions of providing students with theopportunity to volunteer their services to organiz<strong>at</strong>ions th<strong>at</strong> promote health and wellness.Central Middle School worked with staff from CCMH and the “Spirit of Survival” mar<strong>at</strong>hon marking thedistance for the race and writing encouraging slogans on the running p<strong>at</strong>h. They also worked on crowdcontrol on the event day. They will be providing the special needs students in their school with a “NOLIMITS” softball game in the spring of 2011.MacArthur Middle School is also working with CCMH implementing a program called “Eight to LIVEby”. The kick off for this program will be a health fair for the parents and students in Jan. 2011. Thirtystudents are on the planning committee for the school. These student leaders will be trained in givingservice to their community. They will provide painted parking spaces for community businesses toencourage walking a longer distance to the building.16. LIVE – 8 Healthy Habits to LIVE by- Presented by CCMH to MacArthur Middle School duringthe spring of 2011. All school initi<strong>at</strong>ive will be expanded to other Middle <strong>Schools</strong> and all Elementary andHigh <strong>Schools</strong> can use the inform<strong>at</strong>ion in handouts for Health Fairs, Parent Teacher Meetings or otherschool activities.17. District Wellness Committee- Chairman of this committeeOTHER HEALTH RELATED ACTITIVIES in the Community1. Spirit of Survival Kid’s Mar<strong>at</strong>hon’s and Adult Mar<strong>at</strong>hon’s are <strong>at</strong>tended by many elementarystudents. Middle <strong>Schools</strong> Students are involved as volunteers or are particip<strong>at</strong>ing in the event.2. YMCA YHealthy Kids Day, - “My School’s the Best” Walk-a-thon was on April 17, 2011.3. Southwestern Medical Center “Family Fun Day” will be scheduled on a S<strong>at</strong>urday <strong>at</strong> the SWMC11:00-3:00.4. Young RunHer’s- A running program focused on any girl th<strong>at</strong> wants to run. It is a city running clubwith monthly meetings on topic rel<strong>at</strong>ing to health and running. Southwest Tobacco Free Oklahoma Coalition – Member of this Coalition and meet monthly.
