COMPOUND BOW TERMINOLOGY3

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ARCHERYSAFETYPlease read the following safety information.Disregarding these rules may cause seriousinjury to yourself or property.1. NEVER “DRY FIRE” YOUR BOW. Dry firemeans to draw and release the bowstring withoutan arrow. Firing a bow without an arrow toabsorb the energy can cause severe damage toyour bow and possible injury to the shooter orothers nearby.2. NEVER EXPOSE YOUR BOW TOEXTREME HEAT OR PROLONGEDEXTREME DAMP. Excessive heat, such ascould be experienced on a sunny day inside aclosed vehicle, could cause limb failure.Prolonged storage in a hot dry attic or dampbasement could also be damaging.3. CAREFULLY INSPECT YOUR BOWBEFORE EACH USE. Carefully note the conditionof the bowstring, limbs and riser beforeyou shoot. Frayed bowstrings should bereplaced. Damaged or suspect limbs should bereported to your local dealer for inspection orreplacement.4

4. BE SURE OF YOUR BACKSTOP. Make surethat the backstop you use is large enough tocatch a stray arrow and that it is thick enoughthat the arrow cannot completely penetrate it.Make sure that it is positioned in a safe directionaway from dwellings and other people.5. BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET. Make surethat there are no persons, livestock, buildings orother objects behind or near your target. Beabsolutely sure of your target in low light conditions.6. INSPECT ALL ARROWS. Before shooting, inspect your arrows for defects. Discardcracked or dented shafts. Replace damaged orloose fletching and nocks.7. ALWAYS BE SAFE. Never shoot straight up.Be careful around strings and cables whenusing broadheads. Cutting strings and cablescan cause serious damage to your bow and possibleinjury to you or others. Children must besupervised by an adult.8. READ AND HEED ALL WARNINGS. HoytUSA cannot be held responsible for injuries sufferedor caused by misuse, unsafe or improperarrow and bow combinations. Hoyt USA can-5

not be held responsible for injuries sustainedwhen using an altered or modified Hoyt USAbow.WARNINGThis bow is a deadly weapon.Always abide by all saftey advisements.Children should be supervised by an adult.COMPOUND BOW MAINTENANCEYour bow is a mechanical device and as such, issubject to wear and need of periodic inspection, adjustment and service. Hoyt USA recommendsthat you take your bow to an authorizedpro shop at least once a year for a yearly professionalmaintenance and inspection. Areas to beinspected are axles, spacers, lubrication of axlebushings, e-clips, strings, cables, limbs andriser. The following information provides helpfulinstruction on the proper care and maintenanceof your new Hoyt bow. Keep this manual as ahandy guide for future reference.STRINGS AND CABLESApply a light coat of bowstring wax to yourbow’s cables and string on a regular basis.Hoyt USA suggests once every two weeks duringpeak use. Use a high quality bowstring6

wax available at your local Hoyt Pro Shop. This will keep your bow’s string and cables ingood condition. To assure best results replace FastFlight stringand cables when wear is evident or every twoyears under normal use conditions. Insist thatHoyt USA string and cables be used on yourbow. Beware of lesser quality string and cablesas they may alter the performance of your bowor cause damage to it.ECCENTRIC LUBRICATIONA light, spot lubrication of the axles where theypass through the eccentric should be done on aregular basis (1,500- 2,000 shots). In adversehunting conditions where dirt, dust or moistureare encountered, lubrication may be done on adaily basis. Hoyt USA recommends you use asilicone or Teflon based lubrication or any otherquality grease available at your local Hoyt USAPro Shop. It is not recommended that you use“Penetrating Oils” such as WD-40, EZ-#7, FastBreak, etc.BOW PRESS USENever allow your bow to be put into a bowpress unless it is operated by a knowledgeablebow technician. Always use a “Double Pull”bow press. (See fig 1) Hoyt USA recommends7

fig 1 (An Example of a Double Pull Bow Press)that all necessary adjustments requiring the useof a bow press be done by an authorized HoytUSA Pro Shop.Never use a single pull bow press. (See fig 2)fig 2 (An Example of a Single Pull Bow Press)8

COMPOUND BOW SETUPREST SELECTIONThere are two basic types of arrow rests “ShootThrough” and “Shoot Around” (See fig 3)Shoot through rests are designed for releaseshooters as arrows shot using a release bendvertically. Shoot around rests are designed forfinger shooters as arrows shot by fingers bendhorizontally. Hoyt USA recommends that youseek the advice of a qualified Pro Shop for theproper rest selection for your style of shooting.fig 3 Shoot ThroughShoot AroundNOCK SET INSTALLATIONA nock point is a reference on the string thatmarks the exact location for you to nock yourarrow. The arrow’s nock is positioned underthe nock set. To install the nock set at the properposition begin by slipping the nock set onthe string. Then using your rest as a reference,9

position the nock set just above level. A fingershooter should initially position the nock set atapproximately 3/8” above level. The releaseshooter should begin at approximately 1/4”above level. (See fig 4) Once the nock set is atthe desired location use a special set of nockingpliers to crimp the nock set into place. NEVERshoot a bow without a nock set or with a nockset that has not been properly crimped. Forproper installation Hoyt USA recommends thatthis be done by a qualified Pro Shop.fig 4CABLE GUARD INSTALLATIONSome Hoyt USA bows use a high or low mountstyle cable guard bar that is mounted directly tothe side of the riser by two 10-24 screws. (Seefig 5)Some models use an adjustable cable guard barthat is inserted into a bushing in the riser. Thistype of cable guard bar is installed by insertingthe bar into the bushing and securing it withtwo small set screws. (See fig 6)10

fig 5 (Examples of High and Low Direct Mounts)fig 6 (Example of Adjustable Cable Guard Bar)Note: Hoyt USA recommends that the positionof adjustable cable guard bars be set at the twoo’clock position. (See fig 7)Cable GuardGlideTwo O’ClockPositionfig 711

Warning! On some shorter axle to axle modelsadjustable cable guard bars can be off-set toomuch causing the cable to track off the cam. This can cause damage to the bow or personalinjury. To prevent this from happening NEVERSET THE BAR AT THE THREE O’ CLOCKPOSISTION.CABLE GUARD INSTALLATION (TWOCAM MODELS)Hoyt USA uses a specially designed cable glidethat has off-set cable slots. To correctly installthe glide on two cam model bows make surethat when the cables are inserted into the glidethe shorter slot is closer to the grip and thelonger slot is closer to the end of the cableguard bar. (See fig 8)Note: On bows with high mount bars installationmay be opposite of above.CABLE GLIDE INSTALLATION (SINGLECAM MODELS)On single cam models install the glide oppositefrom the two cam method so that the longerslot is closer to the grip and the shorter slot iscloser to the end of the cable guard bar. (See fig8)This will ensure that contact is minimizedbetween cables at the point where they cross.12

One CamInstallationTwo CamInstallationfig 8 (One Cam and Two Cam Glide Installation)The glide is then inserted over the cable guardbar so that the cables are on the inside of thebar.Note: If you have trouble pulling the cablesback far enough to get the glide over the end ofthe cable guard bar you will need to use a bowpress. Hoyt USA recommends that this be doneby a qualified Pro Shop as a bow press may berequired.TILLER ADJUSTMENTTiller is the difference in actual distancebetween the upper limb to the string and lowerlimb to the string measured from the base ofthe limbs (where the limb and riser meet) at a90 degree angle. (See fig 9)Single cam models must be measured from areference line from axle to axle. (See fig 10)13

fig 9 (Two Cam Tiller)fig 10 (One Cam Tiller)The main function of tiller is to allow the archerto more easily and comfortably aim during thedraw and release of the shot. Most bows willshoot best with an even tiller which means thedistance from the string to the limb is the sameon top and bottom. Tiller adjustments aremade by adjusting either limb weight adjustmentbolt (see next page). Example: Too muchtiller on the bottom limb, decrease the weighton the top limb or increase the weight on the14

ottom. Hoyt USA recommends that you initiallyset tiller equal top and bottom.CENTERSHOTCentershot is the alignment of the arrow in thepower path of the string. This is accomplishedby moving the arrow rest left or right.Release shooters should line the arrow up withthe power path of the string. (See fig 11) Fingershooters should position the arrow so that thetip is just to the outside of the power path ofthe string. (See fig 11)Centershot is critical in how accurate a bowwill perform. These are initial centershot settings, for proper alignment Hoyt USA recommendsthis be done by a qualified Pro Shop.fig 11 Release SettingFingers SettingFLETCH CLEARANCEFletch clearance is the ability of your vanes orfletches to pass cleanly by or through your15

arrow rest without impacting the rest so severelythat the arrows flight path is disrupted. It isnecessary that you have adequate vane clearanceto achieve proper arrow flight. (See fig 12)fig 12 Incorrect CorrectDRAW WEIGHT ADJUSTMENTWeight adjustments can easily be made by turningthe weight adjustment bolt clockwise toincrease weight or counter clockwise todecrease weight. Note: Always turn the topand bottom adjustment bolts in equal amounts. Some Hoyt USA model bows are equippedwith a Dual Locking Pocket system. Beforedraw weight adjustments are made on thesemodels you must first loosen the LockingPocket screws located on the side of the pocket.(See fig 13)When adjustments are completed retighten theLocking Pocket screws.16

fig 13DRAW LENGTH ADJUSTMENTAll Hoyt USA compound bows are adjustablein draw length. There are three different typesof draw length adjustment1. Slot Adjustments- String is moved from oneslot in the cam to another to change drawlength.2. Peg Adjustments- String is moved from onepeg to another to change draw length.Hoyt USA recommends that slot and peg drawlength changes be made by a qualified ProShop as a bow press is necessary.3. InnerCam Adjustments- InnerCam moduleis moved to a different position on the cam tochange draw length.Bows equipped with InnerCams can generallybe adjusted without the use of a bow press. To17

adjust draw length use a standard allen key toloosen the Fastening screw. (See fig 14) Thenusing the same allen key remove the DrawLength screw. (See fig 14) Rotating the modulein the (+) direction will lengthen the draw.Rotating the module in the (-) will shorten thedraw.Once the module is in the desired locationretighten the Draw Length screw first and thenthe Fastening screw.Note: You must make the same adjustments tothe top and bottom InnerCam modules or thebow cannot be properly tuned.Finer adjustments can be made by twisting thestring and cables. Special care must be takenwhen twisting string and cables as they can betwisted in the wrong direction. Hoyt USA recommendsthat these adjustments be made by aqualified Pro Shop.Draw LengthScrewFasteningScrewInner-camfig 1418

Note: A compound bow is a complete interdependentsystem. Changing draw length mayeffect the bow’s draw weight. Your bow mayloose peak weight that may not be completelyrecoverable.TUNINGTo tune your bow have on hand three fletchedarrows and three bare shafts, all identical andstraight. From about 15 to 20 yards shoot yourfletched arrows, making any necessary sightadjustments to hit the target at the same spoteach time. Once you have sighted in, shoot thethree bare shafts and note where the group ofbare shafts are compared to the fletched arrows. If the bare shafts are grouping below thefletched arrows lower the nocking point. (Seefig 17) If the bare shafts are grouping above, move the nock point up. (See fig 18) Be sure toonly move in small increments ( never morethan 1/16” at a time). Each time the nockingpoint is moved it will affect your sight setting,so you will have to re set your sights after eachmove. Continue to make adjustments untilboth groups are relatively close together. If the bare shafts hit to the right of the fletchedarrows decrease bow weight, check for vane19

clearance or check arrow spine stiffness (weak).(See fig 15) If the bare shafts group to the left, increase bow weight, check for vane clearanceor check arrow spine stiffness (stiff). (See fig 16)Some adjustments can be made by slightlymoving the arrow rest to the left or right.Note: Left handed shooters need to reversethese instructions for left and right results.Hoyt USA recommends that you work closelywith your local Pro Shop when tuning yourbow to ensure best results.fig 15 fig 16fig 17 fig 1820

TUNING WITH BROADHEADSMost archers discover that they must makeslight tuning adjustments when switching frompractice points to broadheads. (Even at thesame weight) Broadheads create a dramaticaerodynamic change in arrow flight. For thisreason slight adjustments may need to be madein nocking point height, rest position or bowweight to achieve perfect broadhead flight.HOYT USA COMPOUND BOW WARRANTYHoyt USA compound bows are warranted tothe original retail purchaser against defects inmaterials and workmanship for a period ofthree full years from date of purchase.
