The Indiana Gazette Indiana County’s Wanted, Monday, August 1, 2011 — 3Publication produces results for law enforcementBy CHAUNCEY ROSSchauncey@indianagazette.netThey came from everywhere.Neighbors. Acquaintances. Co-workers. Relatives.Even themselves.Tips came in from scores of area residents, whoresponded in December when The Indiana Gazette’s firstspecial fugitive section hit the streets, helping countydeputies and area police round up dozens of people whohad fallen off the legal system radar.Like the issue now in your hands, the first “IndianaCounty’s Wanted” section featured names and photos ofhundreds of people wanted on warrants issued from thelocal court system. They include criminal suspects who failed to show upfor scheduled hearings, some who missed an appointmentwith a probation officer, others who haven’t met theirobligations through the family court. The publication gave law enforcement officials an extraarm to reach the people who were supposed to have theirday in court.“It was better than we expected,” said Indiana CountySheriff Robert Fyock. The deputies in his office usually holdthe most bench warrants and other orders handed downby the judges and administrators in the county courthouse.Within a month, deputies had picked up more than 50people on outstanding warrants. Calls came in to the statepolice, Indiana Borough police and Blairsville Boroughpolice, tipping them off on where to find people who werewanted.Dozens more have been located since then. The first“Indiana County’s Wanted” list remains a work in progress.“There was an individual who called his family memberafter seeing his name on the list, and told him to get backhere and get this mess cleared up,” Fyock said. “The mancame back from California to face the court.”Others voluntarily turned themselves in when theylearned for the first time, because of “Indiana County’sWanted,” that they had a court obligation — many becausecourt papers had been sent to their former address, officials said. But some, Fyock said, had knowingly eluded theirobligation to the court and surrendered because theirnames had been widely published.Police departments count on the public to help clear thebacklog of open cases on the books.“IF THEY think they’re going to beat thesystem, they’re wrong. It may take time, but itwill catch up to you.”Robert Fyock,Indiana County Sheriff“I think when people see someone they know, theirname, what they’re wanted for, and then when they see apicture and the list of the charges, it tends to generate alittle more interest,” said Sgt. William Vojtek, of the IndianaBorough police.“We have a lot of warrants for people who visit Indiana, get in trouble, and leave or find a way to abscond throughthe system. This is another tool we can use to track themdown.”In their mission to get suspects into court, lawenforcement officers sometimes find people reluctant tohelp and take on the burden of showing up for courthearings to testify as witnesses. But there’s little if any of that in store for people whohelp officers locate the people listed in the publication.“There’s always a concern that they would have toappear in court,” Vojtek said. “But simply making a phonecall and saying where people are wanted doesn’t alwaysbind them that way.“And they always have the option of making ananonymous call.”This special section is peppered with contactinformation. You’ll find the phone numbers for eachagency listed right along with the names and photos of thepeople they want to find.“We need people to do this,” Fyock said. “If they canhelp get these people off the street and have these casestaken care of, it saves all kinds of taxpayer money.”When warrants are served, cases get back on track andmove through the system. Court workers save their timeand the courts cut expenses. And ultimately, according to the sheriff, those who arewanted will be held accountable — even if they changetheir address or phone number.“If there’s any concern that anyone has in dealing withlaw enforcement, they need to make sure they keep intouch with the court, or wherever their case may be,” Fyocksaid. “They need to contact the local district judge orprobation office.“And if they think they’re going to beat the system, they’re wrong. It may take time, but it will catch up toyou.”Go to indianagazette.com for continuousreporting throughout your day, withupdates on national, regionaland local news, including:See what yourfriends have tosay about what’shappening hereand in our world!Indiana County 911 Dispatcher LogCommunity ConnectionPolice/Fire/EMS/CourtsIndiana County NowPlus “Life in Indiana” –information & contacts for:School DistrictsHuman ServicesBoroughs & TownshipsCounty, State & Federal Officesin print daily.
