Across theaisle from us were two young men (and I meanyoung men, not so–called young adults).Well, in fact, I suppose it would be difficult tocall them ‘adults’ either really in view of theirbehaviour.You’ll probably remember the furore a fewyears ago when a young woman was taken tocourt because she was travelling with her feeton the seats. She had the advantage of beingpretty – and polite.These two didn’t just have their feet on theseats, they appeared to be treating an entirebay of seating as a kind of bedroom. Or moreaccurately the edge of a Roman sauna.So why didn’t I have the courage to saysomething?Well, firstly they were indeed far larger (and agood deal younger) than I.More importantly, I had Tina with me.If I had challenged them and they’d politelyapologised and sat in a more conventionalmanner, I’d have felt I’d done my civic duty.If, on the other hand, they had beenaggressive and raised their voicesthreateningly, I’m reasonably certain Tinawould have decided these were indeed not nicepeople (a bit like skateboarders or squirrels)who posed a danger to me.She would, in all probability, have shownsome hostility towards them.And if they had responded likewise, in allprobability it would have been me in court andnot them, and Tina in the doghouse.Frankly, the risk wasn’t worth it.But we are told our trains are now equippedwith CCTV, just to curb incidents like this.If they are, it doesn’t – obviously.As you may remember, I am personallyagainst the uncontrolled proliferation of CCTVspying devices. But, like so many things, it doeshave its uses.It is fair enough within shops to fightshoplifting.It may well help in certain outdoor areaswhere trouble can reasonably be expected.And yes, of course, I’m glad it’s there when ithelps police catch a serious criminal.But because something is done with the bestintentions doesn’t mean that it should becomeomnipresent.And frankly it still doesn’t wash with me that“if you have done nothing wrong, there’snothing to worry about.”I’m doing nothing wrong when I completemy morning ablutions at home – but Iwouldn’t want a camera recording the sceneeither.Or why should me scrabbling after looseshopping if my bag burst in the city provideamusement for some civilian camera operativein his bunker somewhere?On the other side of the coin, too manycameras probably mean that no–one is actuallywatching most of the screens most of the time –a bit like road speed cameras that are ofteninoperative.Certainly they rarely if ever stop a crime beingcommitted.They didn’t on the train and they don’t in citycentres either.A camera may record a mugging orbag–snatch. The Champion • Wednesday 31 July 2013CMBAVisit us @ www.ChampNews.com • 21Scheme to help charitiesSefton CVS staff will be helping to raise money for goodcauses throughout the boroughReport by David RavenA MAJOR new initiative in Sefton will make it easier for localresidents and businesses to support good causes in the borough.Sefton 4 Good is being co–ordinated by Sefton CVS and isbased on a similar scheme which is already operatingsuccessfully in Tameside.CVS bosses say Sefton 4 Good aims to increase charitablegiving across the area, and to provide a better way forindividuals and companies to donate their time, skills, resourcesand money to local organisations.It will do this by being a strong,’umbrella’ brand which will bevigorously promoted to attract donations to charities andvoluntary and community groups throughout the borough.Some of these donations will support specific projectshighlighted by these organisations. General donations will gointo a central fund which will be redistributed to local goodcauses in the form of grants. A key element in Sefton 4 Good’spromotional activities will be its website which will be used tolink charities to potential donors. Although individuals are verywelcome to support Sefton 4 Good, the initiative willparticularly target the business community. Companies will beencouraged to donate time by supporting employeevolunteering, or skills by providing pro bono business expertiseor mentoring.They will also be asked to provide resources in the form ofmaterials and equipment, or money via payroll giving,sponsored activities or tax–efficient donations.In return for this involvement with Sefton 4 Good, businesseswill be able to raise their profile in the borough, show they arecommunity minded, increase the morale of their staff andprovide a way for employees to learn new skills.CVS Sefton 4 Good co–ordinator, Sam Smith, said: “Seftonresidents are well known for being generous but we want toencourage them to give local instead.”Firefightersin summerbarbecuewarningReport by Ollie CowanFIRE officers are urging people in Sefton totake care when using barbecues and as thewarm weather continues.Between July 4 and July 11 this year therewere 42 deliberate fires across the borough.During the same time last year there weresix.As part of work to protect Sefton’scoastlines from deliberate fires, firefightersand Advocates are currently working withother partners as part of OperationBeachsafe.The operation, which runs until Septemberand involves a variety of partners, is aimedat tackling crime, anti–social behaviour andfires along the beaches, National Trust areasand sites of special scientific interest.Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service groupmanager Rob Pritchard, district managerfor Sefton, said: “The long awaited goodweather is something we will all enjoy, butwe would ask that people take simple stepsto stay safe.“We would ask that parents talk to theirchildren to warn them of the dangers ofgrass fires which can spread rapidly in thesedry conditions.”ConvictionsHe added: “We investigate every fire weare called to and pass information to thepolice. This had led to a number of peoplebeing convicted for arson in recent years,including this year in Merseyside.“When the barbecue comes out fromhibernation only use specific lighter fueland blocks and be mindful about fences,trees and bushes, don’t use petrol or whitespirit – whilst you may char the burgers thegarden shed is more challenging to dealwith.“Finally, kids naturally are drawn to areasof open water when the weather gets hot.“We are working with our partners inschools, Safer Communities, the Police andthe council to reduce the risk of drowningand the tragic consequences we have seen inprevious years where young people havelost their lives when swimming in water.“Please tell your children to head off to thelocal pool rather than taking a dip in openwater.
