May 2013I was truly astounded when I finally managed to get aninterview from Arlene Phillips in this month’s magazine. She is apersonal favourite of mine and someone who, I believe, alwaysmanages to keep her integrity intact, even though she is now inso many popular programmes as a judge of various dancingtalents. Incidentally, I have to thank Claire Butterworth whoknows no fear (and is far better than I will ever be at facebook)and managed to get her PR interested.I hoped I would manage to get Arlene to talk about how hard it had been to be a woman NOT inher twenties or thirties and still be seen on TV but she would not, predictably perhaps, go downthat road. To be fair, she only granted me a chat because of Midnight Tango the show she isbacking and which is now on the road. But I still managed to get some interesting replies and youcan read them all in these pages. One of the things that did surprise me however is her candid admission that she knew little aboutLine dance, although she recognised its influence in getting some very good dancers in showslike Strictly. I was surprised because as a dancer I thought someone like Arlene Phillips would benaturally curious of a new genre or at least a style that she didn’t know much about. Especiallywhen she seems so aware of the talent that comes out from our hobby.Again, is the thought here that Line dance is an “easy” style, something uninteresting in asmuch that from the outside it still is cowboys and cowgirls incessantly twirling to Billy Ray Cyrruswithout any form of talent or grace? I don’t know and she would not reply any further. But the factis that if someone as influential as she is, recognises the worth of Line dance and yet remainsunconcerned or uninterested about it, what can you do about it?Nothing is the answer. I feel that, for years, Line dancers have done everything possible to showthe world the difference between clichés and reality. If all their words, demos, letters, emails etcstill bear no fruit then why bother further? To spend all this energy shouting in a black hole ofindifference has become unimportant for me now. I am old enough not to have to prove myself toanyone. If worldwide dance celebrities KNOW the talent Line dance can bring out, then the ignorance ofthe genre is down to them, not you or me. You can take a horse to water …. It is ultimately theirloss. So my advice is very simple. Leave the world to itself and understand that opinions andparadigms don’t get changed that quick, sometimes never….the only thing for sure is what theyactually say in Strictly…KEEP DANCING!scan mewww.linedancermagazine.comwww.linedancermagazine.com May 2013 • 3

We all woreyellow and there was a raffle ineach class, raising money for MarieCurie Cancer Care. But there weresome problems with the DaffodilDance this year (and last year too).Because there were two dancesand numerous different tracksof music that could be used, some peoplewere disenchanted and not as enthusiasticas I would have hoped. For the easierdance, Blankety Blank, there were at leastthree different tracks of music. One track,Mexicoma – no tag, another track – 4-counttag, third track had a 16-count tag. Andsimilar with Mexicoma. Danced to Mexicoma,no tag; danced to Your Captain Tonight a4-count tag is needed. We were dancing twodifferent dances to the same track of music. Also some dancers had previously done adifferent dance to Mexicoma. In fact, if you doan internet search there are a few dances bythis name. All very confusing for the dancers.I thought the idea of the Daffodil Dance wasto engage everyone. For all the dancers to beinvolved. In my experience it isn’t happening. We want to support this excellent cause. Wehave had class members and family whohave benefited from the work that MarieCurie do. But in its present form the DaffodilDance isn’t working. What’s wrong with onedance, one piece of music? A dance thatis fun to do, and not too difficult, so that asmany people as possible can join in and beon the dance floor at the same time. Thereare several choreographers who could fill thisbrief. Few names in the world ofdance can make headlines.Arlene Phillips is one ofthem, she has becomea household name in theUK. Although already avery well known fi gure indance circles, she becamea public personality after‘Strictly Come Dancing’as one of the show’s mostoutspoken judges. She isnow backing two of Strictly’sgreatest stars Vincentand Flavia in a new show,‘Midnight Tango’ which isnow on the road. She spoketo Laurent about her careerand the new show.BEST OFBRITISHwww.linedancermagazine.com May 2013 • 17

Laurent Saletto: First of all, thank youfor chatting to me. Let us go back tothe start if you don’t mind Arlene. Whatis your background before you becamea choreographer? Was dance alwayswhere it’s at for you?Arlene Phillips: Pretty much… I studiedthen taught dance in Manchester. It allstarted with ballet, which was my fi rst loveand I continued as a teenager studyingmany other genres. In my early twenties Ifound American jazz.LS: How did your big break comeabout?AP: It all really started for me when Icreated the dance group Hot Gossipfrom the very best students in my classof rock jazz, a new style of dance createdby Molly Molloy at the Dance Centre inLondon.LS: I remember Hot Gossip verywell... What were those years like?AP: The Hot Gossip years wereincredible. Being given a day in a studioto record a dance number with whateverset and costumes and props your mindcould invent was a luxury that I think onlyHot Gossip ever experienced. The waythe Hot Gossip numbers were shot andedited had never been seen before onBritish television and changed the waythings were done forever more.LS: You are internationally known formajor works, from choreographingmovies to videos, to huge stage shows. What do you actually prefer to do?AP: As you would expect me to say, dance is my passion. I fall in love witheverything I agree to do. For me it is allabout creating and choreographingdance and I love all mediums.LS: So, is there such a thing as atypical day in Arlene’s life?AP: There’s no day in my life that’s atypical day. I wake up one morning andI’m tap dancing with my assistants ateight am, the next day I am surroundedby dancers in the Lambazouk style. I amnever bored!LS: Fast track to ‘Strictly’. Did youhave any idea how big this show wouldbecome?AP: I knew by the third show of the fi rstseries that this show would get into thehearts of the nation. Audiences love theglamour, the glitz, the hard work, thegood AND bad celebrities and of coursethe professional dancers.LS: I personally love your style onTV. You say what you mean and unlikemany other judges, you are consistentin your opinions. How important is itto ‘play the game’ as a TV judge ratherthan be brutally honest?AP: As far as TV judging goes, I’malways someone that’s honest, directand speaks from the heart, no matterwhat my heart is saying. However, to bea TV judge, often means you have to bean entertainer and whatever that means, you have to give the performance that theproducers want.LS: I guess that is the difficulty. Butas I say I always loved your sense ofreality. Whereas some ‘play for thegallery’ I never feel that with you. Now,you are also the producer of MidnightTango with two of the hottest starsof Strictly. Why did you decide onthose two dancers and that show inparticular?18 • May 2013 www.linedancermagazine.com

BESTOFBRITISHAP: Adam Spiegel the producer ofMidnight Tango wanted to do a showwith Vincent and Flavia, two dancersI fell in love with when I fi rst saw themdoing Strictly Dance Fever. He came tome and asked if I would be willing to coproducethe show with him as I knewhis stars but also Argentine Tango. Hefelt sure I could engage audiences andreach the general public. We createdthe show from scratch with the additionof Karen Bruce, the director of the show.LS: How did you come up with theconcept of Midnight Tango? Was ita team effort or Flavia and Vincent’sidea?AP: The show is choreographed byVincent and Flavia but ultimately theconcept was talked through with Adamand Karen.LS: Why did you want to producethat particular show as opposed tothe many others I am guessing are onoffer for you?AP: Actually, Midnight Tango wasthe fi rst live show I have been asked toproduce. There have been many offerssince then but I want to wait for what Ithink will be a sure fi re hit before I go onto produce another show.LS: The show is now on tournationally in the UK, is that animportant thing to do?AP: So many shows are produced inLondon, it’s important to take shows toeveryone. It certainly isn’t just Londonthat loves Vincent and Flavia. Wewanted to reach the whole nation andgoing on the road is the best way to dothat!LS: Any exciting plans for the future?AP: Of course! I’m currently travellingbetween the UK and the US workingon the Wizard of Oz as well as We WillRock You. So plenty of things to do!LS: I wanted to ask one lastquestion….What do you think orknow of todays’ Line dance scene?AP: I don’t know an awful lot aboutLine dancing. However, I do love Linedance moves and I also love the talentof some of the dancers that incorporateso many of the genres into their Linedancing. I fi nd it really exciting.Midnight Tango starring StrictlyCome Dancing’s Vincent and Flaviais now on tour. For details seewww.midnighttango.co.ukwww.linedancermagazine.com May 2013 • 19

Linedancer Magazineis an internationalpublication and as suchit is good to hear fromchoreographers all overthe world.Ruben Luna is fromthe USA and gives histhoughts on what Linedance means to himand the world at large.20 • May 2013 www.linedancermagazine.com

“My name is Ruben Luna and I am fromCalifornia, USA. I was fortunate enoughto grow up in Southern California wherethe weather is probably 70-75 degreesall year round. So as a child as you canimagine we took advantage of beingoutdoors a lot and as a youth I was ableto play lots of sports, I tried them all.“When I was at college I took my firstmodern dance class. That was myfirst exposure to dance and little did Iknow I would still be dancing now. Afterleaving school I moved to New York fora period of time, I travelled a lot, I gotto see most of the east coast, drovethrough Canada and I found my wayhome about eight years later. I startedworking in marketing and advertising. This is when I met my wife, Susanna, of17 years.Ruben’s love of Line dancing beganseveral years ago thanks to his wife.“If it wasn’t for Susanna I would not bedancing today. She had a couple offriends who were dancing in their garagewith a private instructor, there were twocouples and they kept boasting howmuch fun they were having, dancing, socialising, enjoying the music, exercising. So of course she got allmotivated and she wanted to go, sheasked me and I said ‘NO WAY’. I thinkbecause of my preconceived notion ofLine dance and country, although I dolike country music I couldn’t listen tocountry with every song.“She kept asking me for about threeweeks but I still wouldn’t go until I finallysaid, ‘Okay I will go just one time and ifI don’t like it please don’t ask me again,I will show my support to you by goingthis once.’ The first dance we learntwas Black Velvet, I picked it up quiteeasy and the instructor was pleasedwith me, the next challenging dancewas Crabbucket by Gerard Murphy andI couldn’t believe I got it. I loved themusic and I thought it was the coolestdance ever and most of all, this is FUN.Of course I couldn’t tell my wife that.On the way home she asked me whatI thought and I said, ‘yeh it was okay’.”Well it only took that one time to getRuben hooked. He went from notwanting to dance to dancing four tofive times a week. “What I love aboutLine dancing, well there are a coupleof things really. The fact that you areable to travel, meet up with people thathave similar likes, dance addicts youcould call them, the fact that you candance and talk about dance. The socialand creative aspect of it, those are thethings I enjoy about Line dancing.“About a year after I started dancing Idiscovered there were competitions notonly for dancing but for choreographingas well which I thought was interesting. My instructors at the time were Dougand Jackie Miranda and I asked themif they thought I would be capable tochoreograph a dance, they said yes,we’ll help you and support you, so Idecided to give it a go.“I still have ambitions that I would loveto achieve. I would love to travel to moreparts of the world that I have not yetvisited, I’ve never been to Australia, Asiaand if Line dancing can take me there Ithink that would be great. I think I wouldlike to try, one day in the future, to holdan event. As a business owner I see allthe hard work that goes in to it and seeall the folks who make it a successfulevent. I would like to do it one time justto show to myself that I can do it and doit right, I think that would be one thingthat I would still like to do.“To sum up Line dance I think I wouldhave to say, freedom of expressionthrough body movement and music. Ona lighter note, I guess I would say, a badday of Line dance sure beats a goodday at the office any day.”Watch out for Ruben’s full videointerview out soon in onLinedancerWeekly.www.linedancermagazine.com May 2013 • 21

A BLOOMINGGreat WeekendFortunately, by the time I began myjourney with UCWDC IntermediateFemale Silver Line Dance WorldChampion Cathy Martinez, the roadswere clear. Our destination was to thepicturesque small town of Zuiddijk afew kilometers North of Amsterdam. What a surprise on arriving at the hotelRijpereilanden where the event wastaking place. The hotel buildings aresurrounded by canals, beside which, isa huge collection of vintage vehicles –cars, buses, rail wagons etc.The director of the event Michel Platjewelcomed us warmly, Michel, a giant ofa man at 6’ 7”, has directed The TulipChallenge for fi ve years together with hispartner Anita. One by one familiar facesstarted to arrive, comprising of judges,Brigitte Zerah, Ann Cummingham, LouisVan Hatten, Roy Hoeben, Audrey Gendreand Jeremie Tridon, competitors frommany European Countries, Mr. scorerBruno Vastel and everyone’s’ favouriteDJ, Tommy Weafer. This original hotel held more surprisesin that the ballroom is in renaissancestyle, complete with a minstrels’ gallery,a huge <strong>wall</strong> painting in the style ofRembrandt, dainty chairs and a lovelysprung fl oor. That was the setting forthe competitions and open dancing. The competitions began with originalchoreography, teams, and Rising Starand Superstar imposed dances.Original Choreography is a divisionwhere anyone may enter dances theyhave created. Two dances stood outfor me, a Rock ‘n’ Roll ‘Jailhouse Rock, presented in exuberant fashion by aLithuanian troupe Linedance LT. ThreeFrench ladies presented their 50’s stylenumber ‘Ladies Boogie’ dressed inauthentic costumes. Cathy presentedher phrased two-step dance Madyn’Bang which featured music sung inFrench by a French Canadian singer! The youngsters let loose in Renegade. Here, dancers have an hour to producea dance to previously unknown music. It calls for endurance, originality andtechnical transitions through the variousstyles of modern Line dance, as well asshowmanship. After the awards for the aforementionedcompetitions, open dancing with Tommyfi nished the evening while the judgingand competition staff relaxed in the bararea, shooting the breeze. It was herethat I learnt more about the excitingdevelopment that has the Countrycompetitive world buzzing, the inclusion, for the fi rst time, of our dance form intothe prestigious World Dance Games inTaiwan in September. These Games arethe dance equivalent of the Olympicsand are organised by the World DanceSport Federation. The representatingbody for the UK is the UKcldsf under thedirection of Steve and Yvonne Dunn. While competition continued onSaturday with Line dance and pro-am,workshops by leading choreographerssuch as Darren Bailey, Matt Oakley whoalso EmCd, and Roy Habisubroto werebeing held in a separate room.Watching the competition I cannothelp but be struck by how much thedance technique and performance hasadvanced over the years. The beautyof these competitions is that they are24 • May 2013 www.linedancermagazine.com

In this winter of discontent it was more like snowdrops than tulipson the drive up to the Dutch UCWDC event The Tulip Challenge. Two days before setting out by car from Paris the whole of theNorth of France was paralyzed by a heavy snow fall unusual for theseason. But Maureen Jessop made it and here is her report!open to all ages of dancer, all shapes,it makes no difference to the quality oftheir dancing. Young ladies such asRising Star (under 18) Mallaurie Gysels(Belgium) stuns us with her agility, graceand sparkle shown in her solo medleyas a cinema usherette dancing to filmtheme music in a 50’s style uniform. Atthe other end of the age scale we haveCrown (over 40) contendent JackyRazafiniaina (Madagascar) making hisdebut in this category as a Mexicanimmigrant seeking the AmericanDream. The theme of the Saturday eveningparty was Men in Black and PinkLadies! A star-studded troupe ofdancers including former and actualSuperstar stars, Raymond Sarlemijn,Roy Hadisubroto, Roy Hoeben, JeremieTridon, Jon DE Knights, Darren Bailey,Matt Oakley, Audrey, and a line-up ofPink ladies treated us to a show on theMen in Black films, bringing the housedown. I got a big surprise when an oldfriend and former pillar of the Dutchdance events Hub Haanen and his wifecame to say hello. It had been manyyears since we had last met, so we had alot to catch up on.This is an important feature of theseevents; we meet up with old friends andmake new ones. This is something thatMichel holds dear. He wants his event toremain a small friendly, family type event, assuring that everyone has a good timein the extraordinary setting as is thishotel and at an affordable price. Thisyear he added a surprise; a tattooist whoactually tattooed the daring there at theevent. Tattoos are becoming more andmore popular among the dancers andan incredible display in body art couldbe seen. After a Saturday evening of opendancing and socializing, until the earlyhours for many, Sunday proceededwith more pro-am and the solo medleysof the Super, including UK’s own JonDE Knights, Rising and Crown starsbefore the moment the competitorshad been awaiting – the results. Toomany to mention but I was glad to seemany friends getting first and secondplaces…All that was eventually left for us todo was to pack our bags, say our fondfarewells, and head off to spend a couplehours in Amsterdam before the snowfreereturn to France. A great weekendand one that I for one cannot wait to goback to.Full results:www.tulipchallenge.comFor further information on theWorld DanceSport Games:www.UKcldsf.comwww.linedancermagazine.com May 2013 • 25

Making theLine dance in France haswell and truly exploded. The hobby is omnipresentin townships, small villagesand everything in between. But some clubs andassociations are not justcontent to meet and learnthe dance of the day, farfrom it. Franck Boucheraudand Ulrich Bernard are twoguys who started out with aclear defined idea and havefollowed suit year on year.We have already met Country Clubroute 45, a French dance club inthe regions of Orleans in these verypages. Franck and Ulrich are behindthe success story of the club. Startingout as a simple idea to fill a void in thelocal market, both organizers alwayswanted to represent the best not just inCountry but in Line dance altogether.Franck says: “We just wanted to shareour passion with other dancers and notjust seem to be elitist.”Franck’s statement is obviously truewhen you meet some of the dancers ofthe club. Each year, a group comes tothe CBA and have done so on quite a fewoccasions now. Some of the membersalso performed during the Gala night in2011 and brought the house down. In ashow, where excellence is the commondenominator, Country Club Route 45not only proved their worth but also thatthey could hold their own as any otherdance group from any part of the world. Both Franck and Ulrich are pioneers ina way as they constantly strive to bringthe very best that Line dance has to offerto the club and its members. Each year,a special day event is held, the Country& Line dance Day, and each year, theguest choreographers and instructorsare true International names. The accentis always on being a “step ahead” andFranck and Ulrich pride themselves inintroducing many new faces and stylesof Line dance to France. In a way,Country Club Route 45 can boast ofbeing a groundbreaker in as much asdancers meet and get to dance wellahead of their time choreographies in26 • May 2013 www.linedancermagazine.com

DifferenceFrance during the event. In the past, Maggie Gallagher, RobbieMcGowan Hickie, Craig Bennett, IvonneVerhagen have made the headlines, often when relative unknowns still inFrance. This year, faithful to that desireof giving something new and excitingto the dancers, Alison and Peter werethe guests. The event as one wouldexpect was a great success and thechoreographers themselves could notbe more delighted with the amazingorganization that is the Country & Linedance day. They said: “We have just returnedfrom a fantastic Line dance weekendin Gidy, France, organised by CountryClub Route 45. Many thanks to FranckBoucheraud and their entire team whoput on a terrific event.”With three different levels of workshops(Intermediate, Improver, and Beginner)organised in three sessions throughoutthe afternoon, there was something foreverybody.Dances taught included Our Generationand Where The Wind Blows for theIntermediates, Come Crawl With Me andStarting Something for the Improvers, and LDF and Whispering Your Name forthe Beginners. Again an eclectic choicesure to please everybody.Alison and Peter add: “The levelof the dancers was so good that wewere able to add an additional dancein the Improver section - Hard To BeA Lady, and in the Beginner section (achallenge!) - Bread On The Table. After adelicious home cooked buffet dinner bythe dancers in attendance we dancedall night long. Dancing continued untilaround four am.”One of the things that everyone alwayscomments on is the friendliness of thegroup. The day in 2013 was no different.“Peter and I cannot thank all thedancers who came out for the day andjoined not only in the workshops butduring the evening reviews and socialdancing enough. You made us feel sowelcome. Looking forward to being withyou all again, hopefully in the not toodistant future!”It seems that Country Club Route45 is not just a place where fun anddancing go hand in hand but also wherequality and consistence are importanttoo. Franck reckons that next year willbe even better…. Something to lookforward to for dancers and guest!www.linedancermagazine.com May 2013 • 27

the fun of a boot campMaureen and Grrowler’s Boot Camp events arelegendary in the UK and it is not too diffi cult tounderstand why. Fun of course and plenty of itbut also fantastic guests and workshops makethis event one not to be missed by many dancefans. Here is John’s report. Our most recent BootCamp was held at the CairnHotel in North Yorkshire atthe beginning of March. We always try to havemagic names invited asguests and this year wasno different with AdrianChurm, Ryan King andlegendary Rob Fowler. These guys really madethe difference and taughtamazingly good dances. Ihave to say that normally Icome away from an eventonly wanting to teach acouple from the selectionon offer, but this year alll thedances taught are worthy ofa place in the dance charts. Iknow I sound biased as it wasmy own event but those whoknow me well know I am, ifanything, an honest guy.Maureen and I support theLine Dance Foundation aswe believe it to be a greatcause and it was great tosee Cathy Hodgson, whowas also in attendance onthe Friday evening, prior togoing to the LDF event inManchester the followingday. She taught the dancewritten for the Line Dance Foundation -“LDF (Let’s Dance Forever)” by Alisonand Peter, and it went down very well.As is the “norm” for our Boot Campweekends, Friday evening is PyjamaNight. Saturday evening’s theme was“Professions” and our workshops areCombat Fatigues. I realise it soundsas though we don’t like wearingproper clothes but it does make fora really fun-tastic event and thoughfancy dress is purely optional, thelarge majority of attendees take partwhole heartedly. We always have a great parade onSaturday evening and this year, thejudges were our guest choreographers. The winners were Dave and NicoleStamp - dressed as a US motorcyclepoliceman and a female offi cer, withsecond prize going to Dawn Garsides -dressed as a french maid.On Saturday we had a surprise visitfrom Johnny 2 Step – I have to reportthat he is still as crazy as ever. Thisfact really came to light during ourchoreographers’ special performanceof “It’s A Beast” a spectacle thoroughlyenjoyed by the crowd. HoweverAdrian’s “Dancing Duck” is an imagethat I will carry with me for a long timeto come. You had to be there, thoughsome probably would argue with me.28 • May 2013 www.linedancermagazine.com

Alot of scarves were purchased at theevent, with the surplus going for saleat the LDF function in Manchester(Cathy Hodgson took them with herand more or less sold out fairly fast!)Incidentally, our class in Hull hasgiven Maureen a new name becauseof the amount of knitting she does. Ican see you all wonder what it is…Madame “Grrowler” Defarge, becauseshe sits and knits while the classgoes through it’s paces learning newdances. I am not so sure the dancersin our midst are that Dickensianthough… We are quite a modern littlegroup. For us both our Boot Camp is awonderful yearly treat where we seepeople on our own turf as it wereand we can only thank our guestchoreographers for all their hard workas well as our gratitude for the fun andthe spirit of all those who came fromfar and wide. Our next “Boot Camp” weekend willbe in Scarborough, North Yorkshire,28 Feb - 02 Mar 2014 and this onepromises to be a lot of fun too…Till thenLUV & XXX’sfrom Maureen and GrrrROB FOWLER“Not Enough” (Rob & LianneFowler)40 Count, 4 Wall, Beg.Music : “Not Enough” by Queen Lafi tah& Dolly Parton“Driven” (Rob Fowler)84 Count, 2 Wall. Clearly indicating anew artistic lease of life,’the minutes’ is arguably Alison’s mostcreatively- brimming album ever. It has subtle parallels to hersynthpop past, but is also bang up-to-date, taking in elementsof high-end pop smashes, R&B, modern club sounds andelectronic experimentation.www.linedancermagazine.com May 2013 • 31

MAGNETIZEDMAGNETIZEDAnd the answer is a resounding yes.Cast your minds back to 1987. Thesong Shattered Dreams was the firstrelease from the band and it was goingto be a phenomenal hit all around theglobe, even making it in the USA, afeat near impossible even today. Manyan established singer has tried andfailed but for this young UK pop bandto make it so big was quite amazing.Songs like Turn Back The Clock, I Don’tWant To Be A Hero and Heart Of Goldswiftly followed, eventually spawningIt has been anincredible 25 yearssince JHJ madeMAGNETIZEDIt is worth noting that as fortune wouldhave it, the band is now produced byheadlines as beingJohn Wooler the very person whosigned them to Virgin Records wayone of the most fondlyback in 1986. Magnetized is widelyanticipated as one of the top albums ofremembered and2013 and it is not difficult to hear why.successful band ofthe release of the album “Turn Back Magnetized took two years toThe Clock” which became a double complete and in my opinion, it is athe late Eighties. Theirnew album is calledMAGNETIZED andLaurent asks “Was itworth the wait?”platinum selling more than four millioncopies worldwide.Clark Datchler and Mike Nocito wereJohnny Hates Jazz and are still together25 years later. As many Eighties revivalbands they could just be content tosing their old hits, but they wantedmore. And so, in 2013, the two menare now releasing this follow up albumwhich will please all their long standingfans as well as introducing a freshand contemporary sound, though stillunmistakably a Johnny Hates Jazzsound to a legion of new listeners.great collection of songs, all boastingof the same catchy melodies that madethe band so famous 25 years ago aswell as some really nice lyrics. Theband has grown up and it does feelas though the songs are more aboutJohnny Hates Jazz’s own journey withtexts about missing opportunities, reflective thoughts about materialismand sadness at the end of someone’s<strong>32</strong> • May 2013 www.linedancermagazine.com

life. It’s all in there and is powerful, beautifully produced and engaging. But make no mistake, this is not asuccession of maudling tunes froma couple of yesterday superstars.Johnny Hates Jazz were always agreat pop group and have remainedas such. Pop is a very difficult marketto flourish in but Magnetized is a greatcollection of songs that you will findyourself humming to and rememberingfor a long time to come.25 years ago, the album Turn BackThe Clock was an album definingan era, sung by two young guyswho had the world at their feet andplenty of experiences to come. Today,Magnetized is the natural follow up,full of Eighties vibes, yet of today’sflavour. We may have had to waita quarter of a century but it is quitewonderful to once again, get back tothe unmistakable sound of JohnnyHates Jazz.www.linedancermagazine.com May 2013 • 33

Prayers, speeches, singing and dancing fi lledthe ballroom with laughter and cheers.Soon after, about 120 participants fromIndonesia, Malaysia, Australia, TheNetherlands, China and Singaporearrived at the ballroom awaiting Ria andJulia who taught three of their danceseach, specially choreographed for thisevent. This year was the firstCountry to Country festivalheld over two days inthe O2 Arena in Londonbringing some of thebiggest names in CountryMusic all under one roof.Claire Butterworth andSteve Rutter tell us allabout it.The weekend began for us at five ammaking the four and a half hour journeydown to London. Upon arrival we couldsee streams of Stetsons, like a miniNashville; we knew for sure we wereheading in the right direction! Withinthe Arena were lots of stands sellingmerchandise from the artists both bigand small, food from all over the world,a great deal of western wear and evenGem-in-I selling all their sparkles. The arena was the main attraction ofcourse but there were also some smallerstages which showcased country artistsfrom all over the world including JillJohnson from the USA and a duo fromScotland who we think we’ll be seeinga lot more of on the Line dance circuitcalled Raintown. They are, at the time ofwriting this feature, supporting BrantleyGilbert’s tour.We also met Ags Connoly, an artist verykeen to get involved with the Line dancecommunity. We also chatted to TheGood Intentions who are a Blue GrassBand from Liverpool. To us these artistscaptured the audience’s imaginationand created a superb atmosphere whilewe waited in anticipation for the big actsto come on the main stage.Supporting big names is never easybut we were really impressed by theseguys. So to the main event. The first act on themain stage was Grammy award winningKristian Bush from the duo Sugarland. He was followed by Little Big Town, agroup that is a firm favourite for us both.We made our way up to the mainarena and found our seats, theatmosphere was just amazing. Theone thing that struck our attention wasthe age range there. The majority ofthe crowd were young, showing thatCountry music is still very much alivein the UK today. With this in mind, this could be thetime when we finally should be able topromote country music within our dancescene far more than we do and attractyounger elements as well as keeping thefans happy.52 • May 2013 www.linedancermagazine.com

Vince Gill was up next. The legendarysinger performed a range of songs fromthe start of his career to the material hehas recorded in the more recent years. Then it was finally time to see the maneverybody had been waiting for. TimMcGraw.By this time the Arena was packed, Timhad everyone on their feet covering songsold and new, we couldn’t have asked fora better finale for the first night. This wasamazing and certainly for us both, themost Country of country events we everhave gone to in the United Kingdom.Sunday was another day with otherterrific acts from the USA. We weredelighted to catch the newest inducteeto the Grand Ole Opry, Darius Ruckerwho was excellent as well as LeannRimes who stunned her audiencewith her acapella version of AmazingGrace. The arena became so silentyou could have heard a pin drop, itwas truly amazing, a moment in timeno one there would ever forget andin our opinion the performance of theweekend. We were able to also see BrantleyGilbert, who has a rocky edge to hismusic, and just to finish what had beenthe most amazing weekend for countrymusic the fabulous Carrie Underwoodwho was simply incredible. This isone artist everyone who loves Countryshould see live once in their lives. Shehas an amazing international futureahead of her, and reminded us both ofa young Dolly Parton.Carrie’s performance was very specialfor Steve when she performed one ofher biggest hits “Before He Cheats”which Steve co-choreographed thedance “Before They Cheat” to, alongwith Glynn Holt. This was a spectacular weekend andwe would highly recommend any countrymusic lover to go and experience whatthey have to offer.Next year’s Country 2 Country festivalwill be the 15-16 March 2014. Trying new formats is a very hard thing to do when you create an event.Big Dave was recently invited to an Orlando “Experience” not to be missed. Here is his report…Diane and Sandy run this great eventand I’m so proud that they include me astheir DJ and co-host along with Pauline. We had a lovely crowd with us this yearand we really did have a fun transatlanticdance party.Pauline and I have enjoyed a ‘Busman’sHoliday’ to help with this new event inthe States for three years now. This yearwas the best ever as The Experiencecontinues to grow, develop and getestablished on the US event circuit. The guests were illustrious this year:Ria, Craig, Simon, Guyton, Shaz, Dan,Debbie and Joey and they all did anawesome job dancing, socialising andteaching some great new dances, all setto a fun ‘Movies’ theme. In the States most events are bigmulti-room affairs with three to fourroom options for workshops and socialdancing as well as theatre style seatingaround the dance fl oors. Diane andSandy have successfully organised avice-versa, taking a Brit style event tothe USA, a one room event with tablesaround the dance fl oor. Now in the USA,that is quite new and I can report that itseems to be working well, with around200 dancers joining us this year. From a DJ point of view, I love workingthrough a pre-published list of the teamsclassic dances over the weekend andeach night showcase the evenings hostsfor a half hour slot around midnight –The dancers particularly liked the screenshowing the up-coming dances andmade good use of the request slips eachevening. We don’t do a formal ‘show’ at theExperience, but thanks to the Movietheme, there was a lot of laughs withdressing up as famous stars and judgingtables on the Saturday evening! Afterthat, like every evening, we danced thenight away until the early hours, slippingin lots of fun bits along the way like theChoreographer Music/Dance Bingo, aquiz and our Dancer Oscars. Everyoneenjoyed their hot dog, popcorn andnachos movie treat at midnight too.The Experience had attracted a greatdiverse crowd asking for Improverthrough to Advanced dances, as wellas a good mix of country and pop too, something for everyone. One of my personal highlights is anight in a big local Country Club calledCowboys, where we have around 150dancers, both at the event and manylocals just with us for the night. I getto DJ for the night and this year Ria,Simon and Craig each taught a newdance. That is always a great start to agreat weekend. On Sunday evening we round it alloff with an informal chill down night ata local bowling alley for around 50 ofthe dancers still in town, this year ourchamps were Rona Kaye from New Yorkand our very own Craig Bennett. Thenwe danced some more in the alley bar, where I got to DJ again. The team then chilled out at a cool postevent party at Diane’s, a lovely fi nish toa fabulous weekend with good dancingfriends. And guess what? It is all set to beeven bigger and better next year with anincredible line-up. See what you think:Niels Poulsen, Rachael McEnaney, DeeMusk, Maria Maag, Guyton Mundy,Simon Ward - and our regular MC JoeyWarren who will be our ‘ringmaster’for the ‘Circus’ theme, hopefully “thegreatest show on earth”… What anExperience this will be! If you are freeon the weekend of 13th-16th February2014, you could do far worse than havea weekend in Orlando!56 • May 2013 www.linedancermagazine.com

...Jill Babinecwww.linedancermagazine.comA nice easy beginner from John Robinson. Of course it hassome wiggles in it or it wouldn’t be a Robinson dance! Singer-songwriter,Brad Paisley, has beenworking at his homestudio on his newalbum ‘Wheelhouse’and he’s alsoproducing by himselffor the very first time.80 • May 2013 www.linedancermagazine.com

WheelhouseBrad describes his newalbum as, “the sound of anold farmhouse. It is the soundof creaky old fl oorboards, screendoors and immutable songwritingminds opening. We only had one rulewith this record, to throw out the rules. When we began I hung a sign abovethe door that said, ‘This place on earth, this moment in time, has never beenrecorded before and will never happenagain.’“Whatever we do here,” Paisley saysin the studio’s piano room, “whateverends up coming out of here on analbum, must end up eventually being inmy wheelhouse. Because I’ve done it.”Much of what ended up among the17 tracks on Wheelhouse was a resultof Paisley’s dedication to challenge. He’d never been his own producer, never commissioned a studio, neverrecorded an album without fallingback on some of Nashville’s studiomusicians and never tackled some ofthe diffi cult themes that are present inthe album. Certainly not in the way thathe approached them on Wheelhouse.“Every song was meant to incorporatesomething new for me and to takesome sort of twist you don’t expect,”Paisley explains. “Whether that bethe lyric or the loop or the guest, or adifferent format like rap, or getting acomedian like Eric Idle, it needed tospin your head around somewhere. It’slike my dog when you say his namefollowed by a command he doesn’tunderstand. He’s like, “Huh?” Andhe turns his head a little sideways. That’s what I wanted every songto do, in one way or another.”Paisley did that in a big way with thealbum’s fi rst song and lead single,‘Southern Comfort Zone’, whichincorporated a bevy of unpredictableelements – the voice of his latefriend, Andy Griffi th, pieces of theSouthern folk standard ‘Dixieland’and the Brentwood BaptistChurch Choir. All of that waspaired with Paisley’s familiarvoice and stunning guitarshredding while he challenges listenersto get out of their own comfort zonesby seeing as much of the world aspossible. “I wrote a bunch of songsthat aren’t comfortable,” he says. “Andthat was the point really, for them to bevocally, musically, lyrically, thematicallyuncomfortable, or at least new enoughto me that I think I had to stretch.”He did that in the song writingprocess, writing to a pre-existing loopfor the fi rst time when he penned ‘BeatThat Summer’, the album’s secondsingle, with frequent collaborator ChrisDuBois and in-demand songwriterLuke Laird. Paisley took another freshapproach in sampling a classic countrysong, incorporating Roger Miller’s‘Dang Me’ in ‘Outstanding In OurField’. And Paisley challenged himselfyet again by threading Monty Pythonicon Eric Idle into the tongue-in-cheekmarital commentary of ‘Harvey Bodine’,the story of a henpecked husband whofi nds new life by dying. You want morechallenges? How about incorporatingrap for the fi rst time with the recitationsof AAA singer/songwriter Mat Kearney,Grand Ole Opry member CharlieDaniels and iconic rapper LL Cool J?But the biggest challenges mighthave come in Paisley’s songwriting. The wit and thoughtfulness that havealways been part of his work continuein Wheelhouse but he pushes them tonew extremes. “What kind of an artistam I if I let the fear of consequencesfor art be take away my willingnessto speak about what I believe in?” heasks rhetorically. “I couldn’t look myselfin the eye in the mirror if I was willingto just say, ‘I think it’s important andpeople need to hear it, but that scaresme because I don’t know what that’ll doto my career, so I just won’t put it onthere.’ I couldn’t do that.”As he experienced a creative rebirthon Wheelhouse, he began to ponder:When does one truly start living? Herealised one experiences life most inthe midst of personal challenge. “Thisalbum may not be for everyone but Ihope it is for you.”www.linedancermagazine.com May 2013 • 81

This month our Last Line goes to Michele Godard fromFrance. Her friends know Michele is a straight lady who tells itlike it is…. So here’s what she thinks about a universal subjectwhen it comes to Line dance…A few years ago, I used to go very often to country music and rock concerts in manyFrench regional festivals. Then in 1998/99 I first saw a group from Paris dance whileCountry music was being played. I loved what I saw and looked for a nearby club so asto join there and then.At that time there was little chance of finding a club but I was lucky. I found a group andthat was that. I have danced since then what the French call “danse Country” (ie: Linedance to Country music).I was also very lucky to be involved when all clubs danced similar dances, dances thatwere not so difficult. We used to travel quite a bit, making friends through France. For methose were the best days and I feel quite nostalgic about them sometimes.Like everywhere else in Europe, Line dance in France has gone mad, very quickly Countrydance clubs have sprouted everywhere, in the smallest of villages, but what kind of animage have we actually given out then? Anyone who knew three dances gave a class. Some clubs opened without instructors. It was too fast, too much and not enough quality. It is all very puzzling for certain. And all that in the name of Country!I do love listening to Country but love and have always loved any style of dance. I love asong, I love to dance. In France we used to say that we danced “country” but why say that when most dancersdance to pop music? Today there are tensions between purists who argue Country versuswhat the French call “Line” here, ie: pop. A thought comes to mind. If clubs clearly statedwhat kind of music they prefer would that not calm things down a bit?I see many socials advertised asking for ‘Western dress if possible’, yet the program ofthat evening will comprise of a great number of pop based dances so why ask for peopleto dress up? Is this done by ignorance or to provoke? Surely people should dress asthey like…Because of this chasm, there is a new style coming over here, the Catalan Country Style. This style is for the dancers who have made the choice to dance ONLY that style. Thosedances are purely Country. I admire and respect that.In my classes, I try to teach my dancers every dance genre, Country and Pop. My style ofteaching is clear and precise and in all my years only one person left wanting to do onlycountry style dancing. So I think the French like to say they are Country but a few knowCountry music well, if at all. Country is a culture we have no real understanding of. Manydon’t speak English, how would they understand what is being sung? The first CBA I attended, five years ago in Blackpool really opened my eyes. I saw all thosedancers dancing different styles and genres and asked myself: “Why are we not allowedto dance certain choreographies? Who says?”What dancers want is to relax, to have fun and forget their troubles for a while. I havenoticed people love to dance to songs they have heard on the radio. These dances don’tstay around very long, no more than the song does… Quite the opposite with country, asone can dance to something quite old and no one can moan “Oooh! That’s ancient”…Country music is almost without time constraints. But who cares if you are having fun?The fact is that right now we have less and less dancers joining classes and clubs and Iwould like to see MY hobby not disappear completely because of those unimportant littlewars that, as mature people, we should not be engaging in.
