ENGINEERING BULLETIN“Right <strong>Co</strong>mbination” reduces pump vibrationIf you’re reading this information, itis likely that at some time you’ve beeninvolved in specifying, installing, orproviding solutions designed to reducevibration in mechanical piping systems.Mechanical room pumps,chillers, cooling towers, fans, and boilersgenerate vibration and noise.Sound, or noise, is the result of a vibrationin an elastic medium. Even in thebest designed systems, there is no feasibleway to avoid all noise and vibration...they are simply inherent in theprocess. A pump, for example, deliversa continuous stream of pulses to thefluid as the impeller blades pass thecutoff in their housing.Referring to the 1995 ASHRAEApplications Handbook (Chapter 43 -Sound & Vibration <strong>Co</strong>ntrol, pg.43.34/.39/.40)... All piping systemshave mechanical vibration generatedby the equipment which is transmittedby the pipe wall and the water column.<strong>Flex</strong>ible pipe connectors (1) providepiping flexibility to permit isolatorsto function properly, (2) protectequipment from strain (stress) due tomisalignment, and (3) attenuate noiseand vibration transmission along thepiping. All flexible connectors requireend restraint to counteract the pressurethrust. Metal hose is constructedwith a corrugated inner core andbraided cover that helps attain a pressurerating and provides endrestraints that eliminate the need forsupplemental control assemblies.Although there are numerous proposalsfor resolving vibration problemsinherent to mechanical pipingsystems, each having its own merits,the following proposal will specificallyaddress an efficient and cost-effectivesolution using braided metal pumpconnectors.
