Women in <strong>Engineering</strong>Women in <strong>Engineering</strong>Ryerson’s Women in <strong>Engineering</strong> (<strong>WIE</strong>) is an award-winningprogram <strong>of</strong>fering engineering career information to high school<strong>and</strong> university women. We promote a friendly <strong>and</strong> supportiveenvironment for women pursuing engineering studies.The program was founded in 1989 with committee membersrepresenting staff, faculty <strong>and</strong> students from the University’sFaculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong> <strong>and</strong> other departments. In 1991, <strong>WIE</strong>created the high-school-oriented Discover <strong>Engineering</strong> SummerCamp with the support <strong>of</strong> industry partners. The program hassince exp<strong>and</strong>ed with events for girls <strong>and</strong> women from primaryschool to university.An open resourceThe <strong>WIE</strong> Office is headquarters for all Discover <strong>Engineering</strong>programs <strong>and</strong> is an excellent resource for high school <strong>and</strong> universitystudents, as well as high school teachers <strong>and</strong> guidancecounsellors. A full-time coordinator hosts regular drop-in hours,<strong>and</strong> can provide students with academic, career <strong>and</strong> personalcounselling <strong>and</strong> referrals. The <strong>WIE</strong> coordinator is also the contactfor teachers <strong>and</strong> guidance counsellors who would like tolearn more about our programs or book visits to their schools.<strong>WIE</strong> publishes articles <strong>and</strong> presents at conferences around theworld. Discover <strong>Engineering</strong>A career to discoverDiscover <strong>Engineering</strong> was founded in 1991 as a summer camp. It now includesvisits to high schools, a career conference at Ryerson University, <strong>and</strong> a programfor Girl Guides. Most <strong>of</strong> the programs are at no cost to the participants.Discover <strong>Engineering</strong> Summer CampDiscover <strong>Engineering</strong> Summer Camp is a week-long day campthat brings the science <strong>of</strong> engineering to high school women.Camp counsellors are female undergraduate engineeringstudents who guide participants in sessions led by Ryersonfaculty, staff <strong>and</strong> alumni.Discover <strong>Engineering</strong> Career ConferenceThis one-day conference is held for women in grades 10, 11or 12, along with parents, teachers <strong>and</strong> guidance counsellors.Participants attend panels <strong>and</strong> workshops focused on careers inengineering <strong>and</strong> meet with women working in engineeringrelatedcareers.Discover <strong>Engineering</strong> High School WorkshopsThese 70-minute workshops are <strong>of</strong>fered to co-ed classes but areled by female faculty, staff, <strong>and</strong> engineering students. Discussionscover the way engineering applies to our daily lives, as well as opportunitiesin the field. There are h<strong>and</strong>s-on activities, too, followedby question-<strong>and</strong>-answer sessions.Discover <strong>Engineering</strong> Girl Guides ConferenceThis conference is a half-day event for Girl Guides, ages nineto 12. The Guides learn about different types <strong>of</strong> engineering<strong>and</strong> how engineered devices have improved the way we live.They try h<strong>and</strong>s-on activities, <strong>and</strong> earn an <strong>Engineering</strong> badge fortheir day’s work.
